STUNNED. DISTURBED. SADDENED. These are but a few of the emotions stirred in the sports industry following Andre Agassi's confession to using crystal meth 12 years ago.

i can handle the truth Andre Agassi feels heat after disclosing his past. Founder/Publisher

Teresa@TennisViewMag.com

Agassi's recently released autobiography, OPEN, discloses that he used the illegal drug in 1997 during a slump in his career and while he was depressed and confused. Furthermore, during that time, he failed a drug test and lied to authorities to avoid a ban from the Tour. He convinced the International Tennis Federation that the crystal meth had entered his system "unwittingly" and after drinking a "spiked soda." Agassi was cleared of any wrong doing and continued to play without interruption. The ITF says Andre's confession confirms that a tough Anti-Doping Program is necessary. "The ITF is surprised and disappointed by the remarks made by Andre Agassi in his biography admitting substance abuse in 1997. Such comments in no way reflect the fact that the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme is currently regarded as one of the most rigorous and comprehensive anti-doping programmes in sport," reads a statement released from the ITF. Some sports fans say that Agassi's drug admission is ego-driven and an attempt to attract the spotlight. Others suggest that he has disclosed the truth to show disrespect to the ITF. And yet other theories claim that Andre is admitting to drug use now due to greed – he wants to sell books. I don't agree with any of these allegations. I don't know Andre, but my instinct tells me he is a high quality individual, in which integrity is paramount. He's demonstrated that he is a devoted husband and loving father. And he gives selflessly to charity through educating children of misfortune. He doesn’t just talk about improving the world he puts in the time. It is unfortunate that his tumultuous childhood led to irrational impulses and illegal drug use. He recognizes, however, that he made a dreadful – and embarrassing – mistake. Errors in judgement of this degree don’t make him less of a tennis icon. I believe we are privileged that he chose to share his experience, allowing us to know him, grow with him and learn from him. I would imagine that Andre struggled to keep his substance abuse a secret. Twelve years likely felt like eternity. In my opinion, full disclosure was difficult for Andre, but not as difficult as keeping the secret. The ITF and fans got duped 12 years ago. That can’t be changed. But perhaps some good can come from Andre’s admission. We might see more troubled players choosing to be honest and come clean. And certainly we would expect the ITF to restructure the Anti-Doping Program, making it more difficult for drug offenders to go unpunished. Sometimes honesty stuns, disturbs and saddens. But I’d rather hear it like it is and deal with reality than live in a make-believe bubble. I can handle the truth. T

Chocolate Premium chocolate manufacturer Lindt & Sprüngli is partnering with Swiss tennis champion Roger Federer in a long term deal to serve as the global brand ambassador for his favorite LINDT chocolate.

“I am Swiss by birth, and since my childhood, I have always been a great fan of LINDT chocolate. I am very excited to partner with the

global leader in premium chocolate and I enjoy their products and am very impressed with their plans for future growth.” For the first time in the company’s history dating back for more than 160 years, the chocolate company is linking its name to that of a celebrity. Officials say with Federer’s likeable and down to earth image, Federer is the ideal brand ambassador for Lindt & Sprüngli. He uniquely embodies the firm’s fundamental values of “Swissness,” “Premiumness,” “Quality” and “Passion.” The association of these important attributes with the names of LINDT and Federer symbolizes the perfect “match” between the number 1 in premium chocolate and the number 1 in the world of tennis. “We are naturally delighted to be able to name Roger Federer, an exceptional and wellknown Swiss icon, as our brand ambassador. Together with Roger Federer, we will become the foremost ambassadors for Swiss quality,” says Ernst Tanner, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Lindt & Sprüngli.

After a season-long battle for the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour No.1 ranking, Serena Williams ends 2009 the top ranked singles player in the world, replacing Russia’s Dinara Safina. This marks the fifth time in her career (third time in 2009) that Serena is World No.1.

"A smile is and has always been such an important part of my personality. Another reason to anticipate exciting tennis in 2010: Justine Henin’s return. The Belgian says she’ll participate in the Brisbane International, two weeks before her appearance at the Australian Open. Henin retired May 2008. “I left tired, exhausted and felt a deep need to prove that I can live differently than only through tennis. I wanted to be like everyone else - to live as an adult, not a child, but as a grown woman,” said Henin. “These past 15 months were difficult at times, but it was very rewarding. I learned new things, and discovered more things about myself. These moments gave me an opportunity to focus only on myself, and it helped me realize that I still had many things yet to achieve. I need to push the limits higher, and explore new challenges,” she continued. Despite having a No. 1 ranking when she retired, the 27-year-old does not have a protected ranking. She has been granted wild-card entries for the main draws at Brisbane and the Australian Open. Henin said her return is not a comeback but rather the beginning to a second tennis career. “The challenge today is not about understanding size limitations, but of raising dimensions. And I plan to do exactly that, I am ready to do things differently, I can give and share. I want to give anticipation and emotions,” said Henin.

A Lending Hand BLANCHE RODDICK WORKS BEHIND THE SCENES, generally preferring the spotlight remain on her celebrity son. For the sake of a good cause, however, she reaches for the megaphone.

“Some of us can give our time and some of us can give our resources. Even the smallest donation can impact a child in need.” Blanche is the chairman of the Andy Roddick Foundation. She oversees the day-to-day operations and ensures money is raised to help disadvantaged children. “When Andy decided to start the Foundation 10 years ago, I supported him. But at the same time, I felt it was his responsibility to see his idea come to fruition,” Blanche said. “He had to be willing to do the work. I believed in him and I wanted to help.” At 27, Andy is recognized globally for his generosity. Recently, he was presented the Heineken Star Award for achieving success both athletically and philanthropically. Past recipients include Andre Agassi, Patrick Rafter, and Roger Federer. Blanche says Andy’s kind-hearted nature and compassion were shaped through family values.

“Andy has a great sense of humor and a zest for life. But it’s his great moral character that is most admirable. Even though he’s living his dream he still finds the time to give back.” Since its 2001 inception, the Foundation has raised $10 million. In today’s soft economy, Blanche says the flow of donations would ordinarily decline. Rather than accept the norm, she answers the fundraising challenge with a plan. “As an organization, we’re working smarter and harder. Our fundraisers have become more creative, better organized, and our volunteers have dedicated more hours.” Andy is the top-ranked, American tennis player who has captured the hearts of fans. His determination and work ethic are evident both on the court and in his charity work. He enjoys a good rapport with the media and has countless influential friends. This tremendous combination is a recipe for Foundation success.

“Andy’s accomplishments in tennis have allowed us to meet people we would have never met. There are so many generous people, such as Andre Agassi, who continue to inspire Andy and enable us to help disadvantaged children,” his mom said. The upcoming 9th Annual Andy Roddick Charity Weekend is Andy’s signature affair: A Saturday-night auction, dinner and dance, followed by a tennis exhibition on Sunday to raise awareness for the cause and funds. Andy invites high-profile friends, such as Venus and Serena Williams, Bob and Mike Bryan, and Justin Gimblestob, to entertain guests and encourage donations. “My fondest memories involve meeting our recipients. Seeing the children smile is the most rewarding experience and worth our efforts,” Blanche said. T

How has your height impacted your technique on court? John: Obviously it helps with my serve – it’s my biggest weapon. It gives me a lot of leverage on my ground strokes, too. I feel with my forehand I can get my weight behind it. If I hit it solid, it's going to be a good shot. But my height kind of hurts my movement. I'm not going to be as quick as David Ferrer, for instance, who is a little rabbit out there. Movement is something that I can always improve on – getting down for low balls. In my case, I just got to stay strong and stay limber, and then that will help me a lot.

OFF THE COURT, STRANGERS QUESTION JOHN ISNER AND SAM QUERREY: How tall are you, are you two related, what basketball teams do you play for? On the court, discerning tennis fans recognize Isner and Querrey for their walloping serves and, of course, as two of the tallest dudes on tour. As Andy Roddick states, Isner and Querrey are somewhere between “Sasquatch tall” and “extremely tall.” As buddies, they share many similarities but nothing more obvious than their stature.

Staying low when volleying would be tough? John: Exactly. I have to work a lot on my leg strength. I think that's the No. 1 most important thing for me. If my legs aren't underneath me, then I'm not going to do anything. Were you torn between basketball and tennis, or was it always tennis? John: I was torn between both of those. When I was about 15 I had to give one up, because up until that point I was traveling with basketball and tennis. So I stuck with tennis. I felt like tennis would give me the best opportunity to get a scholarship to college. I kept up with it and got a scholarship. When did you get your growth spurt? John: It was my senior year in high school. I was about 17, 18. I grew like seven inches. Wow. John: Yeah, I didn't really expect it. I shot past both my brothers. I felt like every day I woke up and I was a little bit taller. Are you tired of height questions? John: I get them a lot. I get them a lot. What's your response? John: I just say tall. They ask me if I play basketball. Sometimes I say I play a weird sport like water polo, or I’ve even told them I’m a chess player before. I just like to see their reaction.

What do you say when people ask if you and John (Isner) play basketball? Sam: Sometimes we'll be sarcastic. Yeah, like he plays on the Heat. Sometimes I say I'm a horse jockey. John said he grew seven inches when he was 17. When was your spurt? Sam: I didn't really have a spurt. I was always the tallest kid in the class by an inch or two. Freshman year I was 6'3", sophomore year, 6'4", junior year, 6'5", senior year 6'6". How does your size come in handy? Sam: The pluses are obviously the serve. And I think John and I have pretty big forehands. We have a big wing span, so we can generate a lot of racquet head speed. If my arm is this long plus the racquet, I might have an extra foot on a David Ferrer who is a little shorter (9 inches). At the net, I can cover more ground. As far as disadvantages, you always hear movement, but I don't feel like my movement is an issue at all. I always felt fast. I feel like I have good footwork and I'm always in position. I feel like can scramble from the back. There's really no disadvantage for me.

ATP’s Growing Up Look back to the average height of a player now as opposed to 20 years ago. I was tall when I came on tour, and I think I'm extremely average now – not with charm, but with height. So it's going to be a big factor, especially for John, because he's like Sasquatch-tall as opposed to Sam, extremely tall. His (Isner) serve is being hit from angles that no one else sees. When returning his serve, it’s definitely an adjustment. But the thing that's going to help Sam is he actually moves really well. –Andy Roddick

Is there a difference in your mindset because you can rely on your serve? Sam: Sometimes if it's break point, I'll just think, alright, hit an ace. If it comes back, you're kind of like, oh, crap. Now you have to play a point you don't want to. But I don't really feel like I'm limited at all. Although if you watch TV or listen to the announcers, they act surprised when big guys can move well. What basketball player who's 6'5" or taller doesn't move well? People are bigger, stronger, and faster these days. People still seem, especially the commentators, surprised. Does that upset you? Sam: Yeah. Yeah, it does. Do you think you intimidate the shorter players? Sam: If I play the right way. If I impose myself and serve big and take some chances on the serve and come at him and kind of get in his face, tennis-speaking, I think I can make a statement.

Just one year after Andy Roddick turned pro in 2000 he formed the Andy Roddick Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children through education and economic opportunity. This year’s 9th Annual Andy Roddick Charity Weekend promises to raise donations for children in need. “Some of us can give our time and some of us can give our resources,” said Blanche Roddick, Andy’s mother and foundation director. “Even the smallest donation can help a child in need.”

Saturday night is packed with a silent and live auction, dinner, dancing and tennis celebrities. Guests such as Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Shahar Peer and Justin Gimelstob frequently attend Andy’s event and enjoy mingling with the crowd. Also in attendance will be Tennis View magazine publisher Teresa Thompson. Sunday festivities include Andy’s signature Free Kid’s Zone and a pro-celebrity tennis exhibition complete with singles and doubles entertainment.

Family Circle Cup (WTA)

April 10-18, 2010

February 12, 2010

Family Circle Cup Tennis Center, Daniel Island, Charleston, SC

St. Petersburg, Fla.

From an historical perspective, few tournaments compare to the Family Circle Cup. Initially sponsoring the event in 1973, Family Circle magazine holds the record in women's professional tennis as the longest running event sponsored by the same company. Since its inception, the Family Circle Cup has created several milestones and has influenced the popularity of women's professional tennis. In 1973, it was the first women's tennis event to offer $100,000 dollars in prize money. As the first Family Circle Cup champion, Rosie Casals received a check for $30,000, which was the largest prize money awarded to a woman that year. It was also the first women’s event to broadcast on network television, also occuring in 1973. Incidentally, today, the tournament receives four days of coverage on ESPN2, and is also broadcast to over 95 million homes in Europe. In 2001, the Family Circle Cup moved the South Carolina based tournament from Hilton Head to Charleston. This partnership between the City of Charleston and Family Circle magazine is the first of its kind in women's tennis.

The Family Circle Cup, one of twenty Premier Events on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, has a roster of past champions that include some of the biggest names in the history of women's tennis including Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf, Gabriela Sabatini, Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Venus Williams, Justine Henin, and Serena Williams. The event offers nine days of festivities combined with world-class tennis. It’s one of the hottest tickets in professional sports and is enjoyed by all ages.

s ith husband Brian Lynch and baby Jada Ellie in tow, former World No.1 Kim Clijsters returned to Tour in the spring of 2009. Her initial design was to ease into the schedule, adjust to competition, and start next year strong. She surprised everyone, including herself, when she was the last woman standing at the US Open. “It still seems so surreal that in my third tournament back I won my second Grand Slam, because it wasn't in the plan,” she said. “I just wanted to come here and get a feel for it all over again.” Since her return, Kim’s demeanor has been noticeably relaxed. “I think that she's just going out there and enjoying it. She doesn't have any pressure, because she already achieved what she wanted to. She has the family. She has everything,” Caroline Wozniacki, US Open finalist, said.

W

Preparing for the pro tour required considerable physical and mental training. Kim said she experienced many frustrating practice days. “Mentally I really had to just tell myself, ‘Okay, Kim, you're starting from zero here.’ This is not a little break that I had in between tournaments or anything. This is really kind of starting from zero and reteaching my body again and knowing how to work in tennis conditions. It was probably the hardest in the beginning. I had a few – no swearwords like Serena – but a lot of swearing going on.” Kim is the first unseeded wildcard to win the US Open and the first mother to win a major since Evonne Goolagong collected the Wimbledon title in 1980. As she looks to 2010, Kim will play a limited schedule of 13-16 tournaments with great focus on the Slams.

s his year, Melanie Oudin won two challengers tournaments, reached the Wimbledon Round of 16 for the first time as a qualifier and cracked a top 50 ranking on the WTA Tour. But it was her impressive showing at the US Open that captured the hearts of tennis fans around the world. She was the silent force of the tournament, defeating three seeded Russians on her way to the quarterfinals: the No. 4-seeded Elena Dementieva, the No. 29-seeded Maria Sharapova and the No. 13-seeded Nadia Petrova. The spirited teen from Georgia demonstrated composure and gritty determination on the world’s biggest stage and became the youngest American tennis player to play in the quarterfinals since Serena Williams in 1999. However, Melanie’s dream run came to a halt in the quarterfinals to eventual finalist, Caroline Wozniacki. “I did not expect to get to the quarterfinals coming into the tournament. It's a huge accomplish-

T

ment for me, and to do it at the US Open really means a lot… I've gained a lot of confidence through this tournament, and I think I can only get better,” Oudin said. Kim Clijsters praised Oudin for her accomplishments and is looking forward to seeing how the young star will handle the new pressure. “I think she's a smart girl. She's a sweet girl. I think she's going to do just fine. Obviously now with a few of the girls that have done well here in the Grand Slam, the expectations are starting to come up, and that's going to be interesting now to see how they're going to cope with that in the next few tournaments.” Standing just 5 feet 6 inches, Melanie says her idol is Justine Henin because Henin achieved greatness despite her small stature. Melanie admits to needing improvements to her game and says her 2009 results have inspired her to work harder.

s erena Williams is the youngest of five sisters. Personality experts say last born children tend to be creative, sociable and confident – as well as manipulative, spoiled and self-centered. True to definition, Serena admits to enjoying the spotlight and being the life of a party. She also recognizes there are consequences. “I'm like one of those girls on a reality show that has all the drama, and everyone in the house hates them because no matter what they do, like, drama follows them,” she said. Serena says she doesn’t want to attract drama, yet she’s grown familiar with it. “Every time you look around, it's like – I mean, there was an incident with Justine [Henin], and then there was another incident with Jennifer Capriatti. Always some drama.” Serena’s dustcloud of drama swirled in 2009, keeping the American tennis star in the spotlight of controversy. The year began in Australia where she drew attention for saying she had received bad calls. Similarly, at Roland Garros she called her third-round opponent, Maria Martinez-Sanchez a “cheater.” “I'm beginning to think it's me, because I do have a lot of drama. It's always something, whether it's my life with friends, with anybody. It's like I

S

have the most dramatic life. It's so ridiculous.” Then, unrelated to refereeing, Serena criticized the Tours’ ranking method for allowing a player [Dinara Safina] to reach No. 1 without having a Grand Slam title. Regardless of the system, and despite being ranked No. 2, Serena said she is the best player in the world. Keeping the buzz humming, Serena launched a line of fashion handbags in the spring and released an autobiographical book in the fall. The book promotion disappeared from the radar following her controversial semifinal’s match against Kim Clijsters. A linesperson called Serena for a foot fault on match point. Serena turned to the judge and erupted into an unprecedented, profanity-laced tirade. Tournament officials called her behavior “threatening.” The outburst cost Serena the match and $10,000. The incident is under investiation and further penalities may follow. Serena came under fire for not offering a timely and appropriate apology to the linesperson, the fans and the tournament. The long-term ramifications of Serena’s actions are yet to be told. The tennis community and fans continue to express divided feelings, but most people are united in opinion and agree that it’s fair to call Serena Willaims the “2009 Queen Drama.”

s ears of anguish. Tears of joy. Pain, rejection, anger. Multiple degrees of jubilation and fatigue. Roger Federer has endured it all in 2009. The year began with a crushing defeat to arch rival Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open. During the trophy presentation, Roger struggled to speak as tears streamed down his face. “It’s killing me,” he said. It was his third Grand Slam loss to Nadal out of the last four majors. Later, Federer’s aching back forced him to withdraw from Dubai and Davis Cup. Then, Darren Cahill refused his coaching offer. In March, boiling with anger and frustration over numerous errant forehands, Roger displayed a rare, emotional outburst, smashing his racquet during the semifinal match against Novak Djokovic at the Sony Ericsson Open. The beginning quarter of the year was harsh for the Swiss, yet the weeks that followed proved extraordinary. On a personal note, Roger married his pregnant girlfriend, Mirka, in April and kick-started a series of fantastic professional feats. He took the Madrid Open title, ending Nadal’s 33match winning streak on clay. Yet, he realized greater satisfaction at the French Open when Federer matched Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles and completed a Career Grand Slam. He also reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking from Nadal. Due to exhaustion, Federer took a break from the pre-Wimbledon tournament, Gerry Weber Open, but returned to London refreshed and in top form. He faced

T

Andy Roddick in the final and after 4 hours and 17 minutes, the “instant classic” match set a record for the most games played in a Grand Slam final at 77. Federer prevailed and became the new world Grand Slam record holder with 15 titles. Shortly after Wimbledon, Roger and Mirka became first-time parents to twin girls. Federer said it was the greatest day of his life. As the US Open approached, he said he had nothing to prove and winning additional titles would be bonus. Roger played with a sense of ease and calm as demonstrated during the semifinal match against Novak Djokovic. It was there that he said he hit the greatest shot of his life, a between-the-legs passing shot. The crowd roared with excitement. Djokovic starred in astonishment. Roger won that match, but the title, however, would go to Juan Martin Del Potro in a 5-set thriller. As the tennis season started to wind down, Federer played in Davis Cup. His victory over Simone Bolelli of Italy secured Switzerland’s qualification for the World Group. The 28-year-old said, "I was able to play very well. I have to go on holiday badly. I have a problem with my leg, I have a problem with my arm — everything is hurting. And I've got to do some baby-sitting." Roger Federer’s 2009 mega world record breaking success has changed the face of tennis history. Undoubtedly, the Swiss has experienced the “Finest Year” of any Touring professional.

s abrice Santoro entered the professional tour in 1989 – the same year the first version of the World Wide Web was launched, the Berlin wall collapsed, the medical field celebrated its first liver transplant, and Ivan Lendl was ranked No. 1 in the world. Santoro, who at 37 boasts one of the longest careers in tennis, is retiring at the end of this year. Fabrice is best known for his arsenal of trick shots that revolve around spin: backspin, sidespin, any spin but topspin. Pete Sampras lost to the Frenchman three out of their seven encounters and coined Santoro “The Magician.” “My game style was 20 years out of date when I arrived on tour,” Santoro said, explaining that his style emphasizes finesse over power. “He’s different,” Andy Murray said. “A bit of a throw back, but he’s always entertaining to watch.” The Frenchman stands 5 feet 10 inches and weighs 160 pounds. He has faced two generations of larger, stronger opponents. Consequently, he learned to rely on control and court smarts to beat his opponents. Roger Federer has faced Fabrice 11 times. “[Santoro’s] very talented in the way he hits the ball. He’s one of the greatest tacticians,” Federer

F

said of the Frenchman. “He’s limited because he hits with two-hands on both sides, but he manages to fumble his way through.” Santoro realized his best ranking, 17, in 2001. He has won more than 50 percent of his career matches, which include victories over champions Stefan Edberg, Lleyton Hewitt, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick and Roger Federer. Today, Santoro maintains a top 50 ranking. “He has every shot in the book. He volleys great, anticipates the game well,” Murray said. “He just doesn’t have as much power as maybe he would have liked. I’m sure if he did, he would have won Grand Slams.” Considering his current ranking success, fans urge Santoro to postpone retirement. “No, it is time to stop,” he responds. “The travel is too much and I want to spend time with my daughter.” Santoro is uncertain what will occupy his time when he retires. He is certain, however, that he will close this professinal chapter with the fondest of memories. “More importantly than wanting to be in the top 10 or top 20, I wanted to have fun as long as possible. I managed to get good performances for 20 years and that’s difficult. But that was my challenge. And that’s the beauty of my career.”

sk Champion Marat Safin about his 2007 climbing excursion of Tibetan mountain Cho Oyu and his eyes sparkle – the same sparkle he once had when he spoke of tennis. But after 10 years on tour, Marat’s passion for the sport has subsided. The Russian is in search of a new endeavor and will retire at the end of this season. Marat Safin was born in Moscow and began playing tennis at age six under the coaching of his mother, a former player once ranked as high as number five in the USSR. At age 14, with the sponsorship of a Swiss benefactor, his parents sent him to train in Spain. “They left me to find my life. You have to go by yourself to find out what you are in the world,” Marat said. Safin’s training prepared him well and when he turned pro in 1997 he experienced early success. However, at the turn of 2000, he struggled to win matches. When the ATP charged him a fine for tanking – not trying hard enough to win matches – Safin considered quitting the sport. Then, an unexpected victory over Pete Sampras at the 2000 US Open catapulted him to fame. “Even the transportation desk, they didn't know me until semifinal; I called everyday during two weeks and they didn't know me,” he admitted after the tournament. In November, Safin became world No. 1 and gained international stardom. Natural talent and athleticism helped Safin win big tournaments, but a series of injuries

A

from 2001 to 2007 kept his Grand Slam titles count to two. Tennis commentators have accused him of failing to realize his potential. Safin scoffs, “In the history of tennis, everybody's an underachiever. Everybody – every single person. Agassi should have been winning, I don't know, 15 Grand Slams. Sampras should have been winning 20 Grand Slams. Federer already should have 25.” Attractive, witty, passionate and personable, Safin is well liked. His infamous on-court rants, self-loathing torment and racquet smashing made him one of the most emotional and entertaining players in history. "I have to push myself sometimes when I'm losing. I have to break a racquet, whatever, just throw the ball out of the court. At the end it helps me… Today I break racquets, for tomorrow we die." Safin’s tournament accomplishments and popularity make him a prime candidate of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. If he were to be inducted, he would be the first-ever Russian. Regardless, Marat isn’t concerned with his legacy. “They can remember me how they want. I don’t care. I’m not really thinking about it all day,” he shrugged. After a career marked by highs and lows, Safin said he doesn’t have any regrets and he’s ready for change. “I will be doing something else in my life and hopefully I will be happy.” When asked if he will continue to climb mountains he said, “Yes, definitely.” -Tracey DeFrancesco

What’s your body’s greatest weakness? If you’re over 35, your bones and joints aren’t what they used to be. And exercising only on week-

ends puts them at great risk of injury. The good news is, you can reduce that risk by exercising at least

30 minutes every day. If necessary, you can split this into 10- or 15-minute segments. As always,

stretch and warm-up for several minutes before any exercise session, and wear appropriate shoes and safety gear. To learn more, call 1-800-824-BONES, visit www.aaos.org, or visit www.sportsmed.org.

TIDBITS

| STROKES & STRATEGY

Winter Training While most recreational players laze through winter break, consider kick-starting your New Year’s resolution today to improve your game. Come January, when your opponents hang their heads in defeat, you’ll beam with satisfaction. SHORT-TERM GOALS FOR QUICK RESULTS

The Four Awareness Points In every match, there are critical points that can determine whether a player wins or losses. At these critical points, I suggest reviewing what I call the “four awareness” points: self, opponent, court, and score. Over time, these points become both automatic and reactionary as players become more experienced in playing and competing.

st

1

SELF

Players have a favorite shot that they go to during a critical point. It could be a topspin forehand, slice backhand or drop shot, for example. When choosing which shot to hit on a critical point, choose the shot that comes most naturally and then execute it decisively. Mistakes are often made when a player changes their mind moments before executing the stroke.

2

nd

OPPONENT

When you (as First Awareness “Self”) decide on a shot at a critical point, you must consider your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. During the match (or ideally, during the warm-up) recognize the shots your opponent struggles with. On a critical point use the shot you feel most comfortable with, but also aim towards your opponent’s weakness.

rd

3

BY FERNANDO M. VELASCO USPTA P1

COURT

Once you decide on your most consistent shot and consider your opponent’s weakness, you need to take into account the court conditions. Factors such as the sun, wind, and court surface will make a difference on your shot selection. When in doubt, choose to either hit toward an opening on the court or directly at your opponent’s feet. Remember: hit to open spaces or shoe laces.

th

4

SCORE

When you decide on your shot, the placement, and recognize potential court challenges, good players consider the score. Players tend to be more aggressive when the score is in their favor, and be more conservative when tied or behind. For instance, when serving at 40-15, your serve should be powerful and assertive. In contrast, if the score is 15-40 your first serve should have moderate power with more emphasis on placement.

Develop Great Footwork AS A FORMER COLLEGIATE TENNIS PLAYER, I understand the significance of having great footwork. I also understand that great footwork can be difficult to achieve. But if you aim to hit better strokes and improve your level of play, footwork is principal. Fortunately, through proper training, every level of player has the potential to enhance their footwork.

>

Move More, Play Better The game of tennis revolves around footwork. Consequently, we often find the best players generally have the best footwork. If we were to categorize a player’s skill level into four categories – beginner, intermediate, advanced and tour players – we’d find each skill level usually represents a different level of footwork. For instance, a beginner would move their feet the least, usually taking four to six (4-6) steps between each ball strike; tour players move their feet the most, taking 12 or more steps between ball strikes. Next time you watch a match, regardless of their level, count the number of steps taken between ball strikes. As suggested, you’ll see a correlation between skill level and footwork. Beginner: 4-6 steps Intermediate: 6-8 steps Advanced: 10-12 steps Tour player: 12+ or more

A Learned Skill Tennis players who have participated in youth sports such as soccer and basketball have an advantage over their counterparts. These sports develop basic principles of footwork, agility and movement and require the same short, explosive steps as needed in tennis. It’s never too late to kick a soccer ball or play a pick-up game of basketball – they’ll help your tennis game at any age.

>

A Trained Skill Possessing outstanding mobility is a result of hard work. A player’s current level of mobility can be improved by learning the correct technique of the split step, shuffle, crossover, recovery steps, and other footwork-developing exercises. It’s important to build your level of mobility in progression, applying your new skills gradually to match play. If you work to develop better footwork, you will see your game improve as well. T

Footwork Drills

BY GINA CRAIG-MISENHELDER, CPT, USPTA CERTIFIED TENNIS PRO

Practice tennis-specific footwork drills to enhance your on-court movement. Practice tennis-specific footwork drills to enhance your oncourt movement. Drill Note: Practice drills at half speed until comfortable with the exercise, then pick up the pace to full speed. Perform 2-5 repetitions per set, 3 sets per drill, resting 30-90 seconds between sets.

LADDER

Single Run - 1 foot in

Base Drill: Single Run (One Foot In) Degree of Difficulty: Easy Instruction: Run through the ladder spaces allowing one foot to step in each square. Take short, quick steps on your toes imagining that the ground is blazing hot. Benefit: Teaches an athlete to move fast and controlled, while improving agility, speed, coordination and overall quickness. The drill requires quick small steps, which are the same requirements when preparing a shot in tennis.

Variation Drill: Double Run (Two Feet In) Degree of Difficulty: Moderate Instruction: Run through the ladder spaces having both feet land in each space, one foot at a time.

Double Run - 2 feet in

Variation Drill: Lateral shuffle Degree of Difficulty: Moderate Instruction: The ladder is to your side as you begin stepping with one foot at a time and landing both feet into each ladder square. Start with one side first (right foot) and then alternate to the other side (left foot).

Lateral Shuffle

SHUFFLE Base Drill: Suicide Run (Wind Sprints) Degree of Difficulty: Moderate Instruction: Start on the outside doubles sideline and sprint to the center line then return to the original line; sprint to the next furthest line in succession and then return to the original outside doubles’ sideline; continue the drill until you have touched all lines. Benefit: Teaches directional change in short explosive sprints. The drill requires similar movement as if you were moving between shots in a tennis match: side-to-side and back and forth.

Suicide run

Variation Drill: Face the net Degree of Difficulty: Moderate Instruction: Start on the baseline facing the net and sprint to the service line and back, then to the net and back.

Face the net.

Touch line with hand

Variation Drill: Touch line with hand. Degree of Difficulty: Moderate+ Instruction: Touch each line with your hand rather than your foot, bending with your knees, not at the waist.

CONE

Double Foot Hops

Base Drill: Double Foot Hops. Degree of Difficulty: Moderate+ Instruction: Place 12-15 cones in a line, each cone 2-3 feet apart. Hop over each cone with both feet landing softly on the balls of your feet. Swing arms to build momentum and keep shoulders parallel to the ground. Emphasis is on speed without sacrificing technique. Benefit: Cone hops are a plyometric drill, an exercise that trains muscles to reach maximal strength in the shortest time possible.

Variation Drill: Single foot hops Degree of Difficulty: Difficult Instruction: Use only one foot to hop the cones. After hopping one row with one foot, alternate to use the other foot on the return. Note: If you are not able to hop the cones with one foot due to limited strength, balance or coordination, practice hopping on one foot without the cones. After a couple of weeks, attempt jumping the cones again. Single Foot Hops

Variation Drill: Zigzag Degree of Difficulty: Moderate Instruction: Weave through the cones without crossing over your feet.

stepping stones: One step leads to another. After an achievement, there’s a tendency to believe that more accomplishments are possible. This positive cycle gains momentum and continues repeating itself. Greatness, therefore, is achieved through small “stepping stones” of achievements.

54 TENNISVIEWMAG.COM WINTER 2009-10

PERSONALIZE YOUR GOAL Your goals must be uttered with sincerity. Goals must be something you want rather than something you think you should attain. Know your reasons for having the goal.

TENNIS VIEW_WINTER 09:F09 11/2/09 5:25 AM Page 55

step I: goal-setting Striving for and attaining goals makes for a meaningful life. Without goals, we are susceptible to feeling emotionally, socially, spiritually, physically, and professionally unbalanced. Goal-setting creates drive and positively affects your personality and character. When asked: "What are your goals in life?” many people respond, "To be happy, healthy, and have plenty of money." As goals leading to actions, these goals are not adequate. They don't possess the key ingredients necessary to be effective, workable goals. To change your approach to goal-setting, acquaint yourself with the following rules.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS ARE EFFECTIVEL It's an automatic response to imagine the very object that you’re told not to think about. When you think a negative thought such as "I will not smoke today," your mind perceives it as "I will smoke today." You will think less about smoking if you phrased it differently: "I will breathe only clean air today."

PUSH BEYOND COMFORT A goal must be a challenge and motivate you to work harder. Set your goals beyond your reach so that you'll stretch beyond your comfort zone. The more you stretch, the more limber your goal achieving abilities will become.

WRITE IT DOWN – SEEING IS BELIEVING Turn a nebulous thought into a bona fide goal by writing the goal on paper. Written goals are more official and strengthen our commitment. The visual reminder continually reconfirms their importance.

BE PRECISE Be specific with goals to avoid the lack of commitment that comes from being vague. Rather than having a broad goal of losing weight, be more specific: "I will increase my cardiovascular workouts by 10 to 15 percent.” This statement defines the increase that you are striving for as well as the range of the desired increase. In addition, it is a flexible goal, which tend to be more realistic.

GET REAL What’s unrealistic today may be realistic tomorrow. For example, it was once believed that a four minute mile was the fastest a man could run. It was unrealistic to aspire to run faster until Dr. Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile in 1954. Since then, hundreds of runners have done the same. In any field, we don’t know the extent of our limits. How, then, do we define realistic? For our purposes, the best definition must come from your values. You must ask yourself: "What price am I willing to pay to accomplish this goal?" Weigh the payoffs and the sacrifices involved before coming to a conclusion. Setting a realistic goal is ultimately your decision.

step II: how

to achieve goals

Now that you understand the rules of goal-setting, apply your knowledge to your personal goals. Here’s an explanation of each area needed to complete your goals. DEFINE YOUR GOAL Your first task is to determine whether your goal meets all the requirements of the goal-setting rules. If it does, then write it as clearly as possible. W.I.I.F.M.—WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? Why do you want to achieve the goal? What payoff is motivating you?

EXAMINE OBSTACLES You must guard against negative assumptions and other self-defeating thoughts. Remember to be realistic and understand that an obstacle hinders you only if you allow it. Write down innovative ways of overcoming obstacles.

PLAN YOUR ACTION Carefully list the steps you will take which will bring you closer to your goal. The smaller the increments, the easier they will be to accomplish. There is a German proverb that says, "He who begins too much accomplishes little." As the American Dental Association is fond of saying, "Don't bite off more than you can chew."

PROJECT A TARGET DATE State your deadline range, such as: "between March 15 and April 1st." Think carefully about the amount of time you need. Too little time will increase the pressure and cause frustration. Too much time may reduce your drive and focus.

KNOW HOW YOU'LL MEASURE YOUR SUCCESS. As an element of “being specific,” goals should be described in terms of the final outcome of an activity rather than as the activity. Instead of saying "I will increase playing tennis in four to six months," you could say "I will increase playing tennis from 2 times per week to 3 within four to six months."

step III: visualization What you see is what you get Visualization is a tool to help attain goals. Olympic athletes have proven that visualization is even an effective substitute for real practice. When visualizing your goals, you live your accomplishments in your mind's eye. You will increase your chances of accomplishment if you are able to involve all of your five senses in this exercise. SIGHT Imagine seeing the court and noticing the color. Notice the lines and the net. See where your opponent is standing. Notice what she is wearing. Visualize the racquet in your hand. See the tennis balls and notice their color and even the fuzz. Continue to visualize elements associated with sight for several minutes.

SOUND What would you hear as you focus on the sounds of the court. People talking and walking on adjacent courts. Cars driving. Birds chirping. Hear your opponent walking on the court. Listen to the sounds of you bouncing the ball, the ball hitting the racquet, and the ball flying over the net. Imagine the sound of the ball moving past your opponent. SMELL Imagine the scent associated with tennis. The smell of fresh tennis balls out of the can. Plants and flowers. Your sweat. Sunscreen.

56 TENNISVIEWMAG.COM WINTER 2009-10

FEEL What would your tactile sensations be? Begin to focus on the sensations of the court. Notice the texture of the court. Recognize the tightness level of your feet in your shoes. Imagine the feel of the ball, the grip of the racquet. Visualize the power of the ball hitting the racquet and the feeling of running for the ball. Feel your heart rate increase with each return.

TASTE Visualize taste. The refreshing water or sports drink that quenches your thirst. Taste the sweat on your lips as you exert yourself to your limits. Take your time during this exercise. Enjoy the process. The greater you "visually" win this match, the more motivated you will be.

THE VISUALIZATION FILE To aid in your visualization exercise, start a file. This is an envelope or file where you put pictures, clippings, letters, and other reminders of what it will be like to succeed. Your file should also contain letters or awards that you have received. Anything that makes you feel good about yourself can be included in the file. The file should be used as a source of motivation and inspiration, especially if you begin to feel down or de-motivated. Everyone needs to be reminded of past accomplishments. Don’t rely on friends or family, be your own best friend.

COMPONENTS OF FITNESS

Prepare for success by covering the five components of fitness: muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and body composition (also known as percentage body fat). Each of these components has importance to your tennis fitness in varying degrees. You must address each element to achieve a well-rounded tennis fitness program.

component no.

MUSCULAR STRENGTH: Tennis is an impact game. Each time you contact the ball or come to a quick stop after a sprint, your body absorbs serious impact. To withstand this impact, tennis players need to be strong.

Consult with your physician before beginning any exercise program.

58 TENNISVIEWMAG.COM WINTER 2009-10

01

component no.

02

MUSCULAR ENDURANCE: During the course of a point, game, set, or match, players must exhibit strength over the duration of the match. This requires muscular endurance, which is the ability to repeatedly perform an exercise with little or no decline in strength.

component no.

03

CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS: Tennis is comprised of several short bursts or mini-sprints, with little rest. Incidentally, a tennis player can cover several miles over the course of a match. I call it “a marathon of sprints.” Unlike a true distance run, these short bursts of maximum effort require a different type of cardiovascular training to perform your best. While there is an important place for distance running in your program, also include interval training (short burst training with timed short rest periods that mimic your typical tennis point) in your program.

TENNIS VIEW_WINTER 09:F09 11/2/09 5:28 AM Page 59

As a New Year and a new tennis season approaches, tennis players set new goals. Improving your game and the enjoyment of the sport (ok, I really mean your winning percentage) are most players’ desired accomplishments for the upcoming season. To raise both your physical game and mental toughness on the court, you’ll need to raise your overall fitness specific to tennis. I have two recommendations: First, address the five components of fitness, and, second, set a quantifiable goal.

e fitness

BY LaRUE E. COOK, CPT

SET QUANTIFIABLE GOALS

component no.

04

FLEXIBILITY: The quick starts, stops, twists, and turns in tennis require flexibility. Having supple muscles will not only help your performance but also help reduce the risk of injury. Dynamic stretches before your match or practice and static stretching afterwards are keys to an effective flexibility program.

component no.

05

BODY COMPOSITION: This is the ratio of body fat to lean tissue in the body. The lean tissue (muscle) is what drives your body and gives you strength. This is also the metabolic tissue that burns calories in the body. Maintaining a healthy ratio of body fat to lean tissue is important not only to your tennis game but to your general health. A combination of strength training and a consistent cardiovascular training program will help you maintain a healthy composition.

Simply setting a goal to “be fit” is nebulous and undefined. Yet, as a personal trainer and sports conditioning specialist, this vagueness is what I often hear from my tennis-playing clients. The problem is that “getting fit” is not easily measurable because it’s difficult to judge when you have arrived at your goal. Goals must be quantifiable or proven to keep you on track and motivated. Just as you wouldn’t start a road trip without travel plans and knowing your destination, you wouldn’t pursue fitness goals without knowing what you want to accomplish, what steps will lead you to success, and what signs will validate your arrival or success. To help you set quantifiable goals, ask yourself two key questions: What are my current strengths and what are my current weaknesses? A good program will serve to improve your weaknesses, while not neglecting to maintain your strengths. Answering these questions will target your specific needs.

examples: Once you’ve answered your questions, you can measure your goals to ensure progress. For example, if your goal is “to improve upper body strength,” your first step would establish a “baseline” measure of your upper body strength. One option is to perform a one-minute push-up test to determine the number of push-ups you can accomplish in a specific amount of time. As you begin your strength training program, periodically retest yourself to gauge improvement. Similar baseline measurements can be established to help you reach goals for speed, agility, flexibility, and cardiovascular conditioning.

conclusion: Natural talent is not controllable – improving fitness is. Be the best tennis player possible through improving your condition and you will enjoy a new found confidence on court that will help you through long, grueling matches.

01 hydrate with water

Our bodies depend on water, a vital nutrient comprising more than 50% of our weight. Water keeps our metabolism in check, keeps our skin healthy, and keeps us feeling full. Strive for 5-8 cups of plain water every day plus 3-4 cups for each hour of exercise. Add a twist of lemon or lime for flavor and skin nutrition.

better 2010 is upon us, hence the craze to diet. Avoid the “quick-fix” diet plans and instead strive to commit to a lifestyle change involving better nutrition. As you consider the following tips, realize you need not aim for perfection. Instead, use the tips to guide you to a positive path to a healthier 2010 and beyond.

04 eat breakfast

Start each day with breakfast – studies show that breakfast eaters tend to be leaner than breakfast skippers. After breakfast, refuel with a snack every 3-4 hours and don’t forget to add a lean protein source. Protein helps stabilize blood sugars and keeps you more satisfied as opposed to when you only eat carbohydrates. Don’t fall into the diet trap of saving most of your calories for the last meal of the day. Eat breakfast!

03 get organized

Plan healthy meals and prepare them several days in advance. The convenience of prepared meals will reduce the likelihood of eating when you’re not hungry and/or eating unhealthy foods. Pre-wash and cut fruits and veggies, so you’ll grab a nutrient-packed snack, and slice and pre-bag individual portions of lean protein, like chicken or turkey, to be used for snacks, on a sandwich, or in a green, leafy salad. Pre-bagging foods helps us to maintain awareness of portion control.

Use the “Healthy Plate” as a guide for portion awareness. Fill half of your plate with antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies, one quarter with lean protein (about the size of your palm and the thickness of a deck of playing cards), and one quarter with a fistful of complex carbohydrates.

quality sleep

Medical studies show a link between insufficient sleep and overeating, not to mention irritability, mood swings, and more. Aim to get 7-9 hours of deep sleep each night. Quality sleep assists in the stimulation of the growth hormone, helping your body repair itself.

09 experiment

Expand your taste buds and try new foods to keep nutrition fun and exciting. For example, try one new fruit and vegetable each week. Eat seasonally and locally to help add variety to your meals plus save money at the checkout counter. Different stores carry different produce – shop around to help “spice up” your nutrition game plan.

2010

attitude lift BY PAUL J. MEYER

A POSITIVE OUTLOOK CAN ALTER THE OUTCOME.

Everything that happens to you in life is not by chance. Whether you’re tuned in or not, you’re constantly responding to a pre-programmed way of thinking. As you were growing up, you picked up certain approaches to evaluating the events of life; and that programming determines how you currently view life, and what steps you take or don’t take to deal with the opportunities and challenges that come your way. Over time and as a result of the people and experiences you encountered, your overall thinking pattern or attitude settled into one of two categories – either positive or negative.

four 01

EFFECTS OF ATTITUDE attitude attitude

ATTITUDE AFFECTS YOUR BELIEF ABOUT YOUR POTENTIAL FOR SUCCESS. The old saying that states, “if you think you can or if you think you can’t, you’re right,” applies here. If you have a negative attitude, you doubt your ability to achieve, while a positive attitude makes you willing and confident to take the steps and actions necessary for success.

02

ATTITUDE DETERMINES HOW YOU VIEW A CHALLENGE. If you see every challenge as a stumbling block and a threat, you have a negative attitude. On the other hand, if you view a challenge as a potential stepping stone to your goal, you have a positive mind set or attitude. A negative attitude will cause you to draw back and become defeated, while a positive attitude will allow you to keep moving undaunted, thereby increasing your chances of success.

03 attitude

04 attitude

ATTITUDE DETERMINES YOUR CONFIDENCE. A negative attitude convinces you that you can’t succeed –that you don’t have what it takes. Belief in your ownpotential is virtually non-existent. However, if you have apositive attitude, you can act in a pro-active way on your own behalf; and each time you do that, your confidence grows.

ATTITUDE AFFECTS HOW YOU VIEW OPPORTUNITY. When you respond to life with a negative attitude, you become blind to opportunity. It’s not that opportunity is unavailable; it’s that you simply don’t see it. By contrast, with a positive attitude, your “antenna” is always scanning the horizon for opportunity; and since opportunities are always around us, your biggest challenge will be to choose which one to entertain first.

As you can see, if you’re suffering from a negative thinking pattern or attitude, your life will continue to deliver disappointing results. You must take steps to change your programming, your attitude and thinking, so you can begin to experience success and satisfaction. It’s entirely possible to change your attitude by deliberately challenging old thought patterns and inserting new ones. The more often and consistently you do this, the sooner a new habit or thought will emerge. Eventually this new attitude will become entrenched and replace the old one that was keeping you stuck. Trials and Tribulations A Senior’s

Name: Wiiliam “Willie” Quest Age: 39 Resides: Ventura, California Profession: Public Defender Personal: Married, 3 sons Level: 5.0 - 5.5

First introduction to tennis: I can’t remember not playing tennis. I was about three years old when my mother would take me to the club with her. I’d hit against the backboard while she played and then she’d feed me buckets of balls after her match. Style of play: All-court. I like to come to the net, but I don’t have the power to dictate my game. Strongest weapons: Speed and the absence of a serious weakness. Greatest enjoyment of competition: Winning. However, as I get older, just being able to compete is enjoyable. After defeating an opponent I feel: Satisfaction. Greatest achievement: Being voted MVP in my senior year (1993) when I played tennis at Duke University. How pro tennis has changed in the last 20 years? The game is much bigger. I remember talking to Pete Sampras when he was new on tour and he said that the difference in the pros – as opposed to the juniors – was that the pros need at least one big shot (i.e., forehand, serve, etc.). Also, the guys today are bigger and stronger and it’s a lot more difficult for a smaller player without a huge weapon to compete.

Tennis Lament BY IRA SPECTOR

By passed clogs, wired up chest chicken wire stents, balloon veins attest. Food tracks stain the front of my clothes can’t bend well, a few numb toes.

Evolution of my game: Tennis used to be everything to me, but it’s not anymore. Now, I’m much more relaxed on the court. Current tennis goals: To rank as a national top five in the 40’s. How I will achieve my goal: I need to play several tournaments, including the Category 1 Nationals. I’ll enter The Babolat World Tennis Classic, for example, in Rancho Mirage, California in January. It’s the largest sanctioned USTA event in the country with almost 1000 participants. I hope my results will get me closer to my goal. I admire: Roger Federer. He plays the game the way it’s meant to be played – an all-court game and able to beat an opponent in many different manners. He also has the best forehand in the game. Significance of tennis: Tennis has had a profound effect on my life. Growing up, it defined who I was and how I viewed myself. Then, after college, I found that one of the main reasons I became a public defender was I found that winning a trial provided a similar “high” as winning a tennis match. Also the skills required in tennis – finding your opponent’s weakness, quick thinking, and confidence – translate well to being a successful trial attorney…and most jobs for that matter.

Pacemaker counts every darn beat, insulin pump spritzing each beat, sleep mask pushes air up my nose, bite guard at night, it helps I suppose. But come Monday morning, the new break of dawn tennis shoes appear, the grizzled years are gone. A young warrior arises, seeking battle with glee long surging strides and bladder set free. On to the courts, seeking victory and reward my racquet swings mightily, like a rapier swift sword. If I could see better, it would surely be my day, now I struggle gallantly, just to keep the ball in play. Time flies by as the gritty game proceeds suddenly it’s over, euphoria recedes. Magic sneakers that carried me aloft lie on the ground, all gone soft. I reach down groaning, where is my youth? Turn the shoe over, look for the truth there I behold a well-worn hole. Lord of the courts, please bless my sole.

The Ultimate

Tennis Parent BY SARA HEWITT

When we’re together, Dad critiques our tennis game in the same manner as he did when we were children – always positive and always encouraging. His name is Charles E. Hewitt and he’ll turn 90 years old in February. He lives in Pennsylvania and Florida, enjoys fantastic health, works out three times a week, plays golf and hits a great tennis ball.

Tennis is a common thread that has tied our family together through the years: We play together, read about it, talk about it, and watch it on TV. Thank you, Dad, the ultimate tennis parent, for making tennis a family affair.

The Hewitt Family L-R: Chip, Charles, Cynthia, Sara

Club Tennis

Goes Global American Mondessa Swift and Mexican Alina Farrer formed the International Challenge Cup Tennis Tournament (ICCT) 37 years ago. They say the event gives club players an opportunity to compete around the world. This year’s tournament was held in Dallas, Texas where the United States defeated Mexico. Mondessa says that the ICCT offers more than tough competition. “Beside fine tennis, the players were royally entertained at exclusive restaurants, endless shopping, and site-seeing excursions. After the finals at the Brookhaven Country Club, we enjoyed a cocktail party complete with trophy presentations.” Incidentally, Mondessa Swift changed women’s tennis fashion when Chris Evert wore her line of apparel at Wimbledon in 1974.

2009 ICCT. Above right: Mondessa Swift

My Dad learned tennis as a young boy and played throughout college. He was quite good. Thanks to him, my sister, brother and I were raised around tennis, too. We had a tennis court in the backyard and took lessons. Mom didn’t play the sport, but she was always present and our biggest fan. Much has changed since those early years. Mom has since passed and everyone lives in different parts of the country. One constant, however, is our love of tennis and family. We reunite several times a year with our racquets in hand. My sister Cynthia, an Arizona resident, has recently retired and is rejoining the sport; she is a natural player with great strokes. Chip lives in New Jersey and has a great serve, mobility, and hits a ball with pace and accuracy. I live in Delray Beach, Florida where the tennis community is huge. This year I won our clubs (Quail Ridge) ladies doubles champion. Next year I plan to play WTT, USTA, and a county league.

Take a (Short)

Exercise

Break for Peak Performance

Restraint

BY ROY STEVENSON

If you skip a few days of training, will the break negatively affect your fitness level? Research indicates that the answer is no. Rather, a brief respite actually improves performance by allowing time for the muscle tissue to recover, rebuild, and store more glycogen, its primary fuel. However, if a few days of rest turn into a few weeks, fitness levels will decline more dramatically, and it will take longer to regain strength and aerobic capacity.

EFFECTS OF PROLONG INACTIVITY Between 2-4 weeks • Heart walls experience a significant decrease in thickness, and their left ventricles become smaller. • A dramatically reduced ability to process oxygen and a 10% decrease of blood and plasma volume. • The enzymes that help glycogen and fats burn during exercise decline after 15 days.

After 4 weeks • Glycogen, the carbohydrate that supplies energy during heavy work, decreases by over 40%.

Retraining & Recovery During prolonged periods of reduced training, athletes can maintain their fitness level by performing one or two short, high intensity cardio sessions each week. Workouts should reflect approximately 75% of their maximum heart rate. And to great surprise, athletes can reduce their training time by half and maintain almost all of their aerobic capacity for nearly four months. So the next time you break from training, don’t fret about your fitness level. A few days of inactivity will not impair your performance. Try to enjoy the respite but get back on routine as soon as possible.

6 Tips to Hack the Common Cold 1 2 3 4 Sleep: 8 hours a night is optimal, otherwise the body cannot fight bacteria and viruses to its full potential.

Water: Drink 8-10 twelve-ounce glasses of water a day. The body doesn’t function efficiently when dehydrated.

Sugar and Flour: Avoid them. They lower the immune system. Studies show that consuming 100 grams of sugar stops the production of white blood cells for six hours. White blood cells are needed to fight bacteria and viruses.

The average holiday meal packs about 3,000 calories and 229 grams of fat – that’s as many calories as five-and-ahalf McDonald’s Big Mac hamburgers or 15 Supreme Tacos from Taco Bell. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) says a common sense approach to food intake and exercise will help you maintain good health through the holidays.

Stay fit through the holidays: • Burn additional calories by cleaning vigorously before guests arrive. • After the meal volunteer for kitchen duty. • Have a salad, light soup or fruit and veggies prior to your meal to curb the appetite. • About one hour before eating, run, walk or play tennis to elevate the metabolism and help digest food more effectively. • Practice portion control. Save half of your meal for later – or the next day. • Don’t panic or feel guilty if your diet seems to have gotten out of hand.

"I saw few die of hunger; of eating, a hundred thousand." - Benjamin Franklin "Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity." -John F. Kennedy, US 35th President. "We never repent of having eaten too little." - Thomas Jefferson

Wash hands: Use hot water and regular soap or alcoholbased sanitizer several times a day. ncidentally, anti-biotic soap weakens the immune system.

5

Nutrition and Supplements: Eat a balanced diet packed with fruits and vegetables that are rich in Vitamin C such as oranges, tomatoes and bell peppers, plus take a multi-vitamin daily to help fight infection.

6

Manage Stress: Stress weakens the immune system and can inhibit good sleep.

NOTE: If a cold has already taken hold, reduce symptoms by eating soup (4x a day), taking a 500 mg vitamin C (4x a day), and drinking a lot of fluid throughout the day to flush your system of bacteria. 74 TENNISVIEWMAG.COM WINTER 2009-10

Jack Kramer

BY MIKE SANTILLO

Jack Kramer: Icon. Innovator. Legend. Arguably the most relevant person in tennis history, Kramer died on September 12, 2009, at the age of 88. The tennis community pays tribute to his unparalleled contributions to the sport. 1940’s A No. 1 player for numerous years, many consider Kramer the greatest player of his era. He won Wimbledon in 1947 and U.S. Championships (the model of today's U.S. Open), in '46 and '47. Tall and slender, he was the first world-class player to utilize a consistent serve-and-volley game, charging the net behind every first and second serve. He was equally impressive in doubles, collecting seven Grand Slam titles. During his run at the 1947 Wimbledon, Kramer forever changed the game, becoming the first player to wear shorts during competition. In addition, his 1947 U.S. title led to changes in tennis, a game that primarily had been hypocritical: Players competed only for trophies. Kramer defined the amateur game as "phony," and years later, said that kids were getting money under the table. So, prior to the '47 final, Kramer turned pro for the simple reason that he needed the money. With a deal already in hand with a tennis promoter, all Kramer needed was a top performance. And he got it. His win would set the stage for the pro era to skyrocket. Just two months later, his pro tour attracted over 15,400 people to Madison Square Garden.

the Open Era in tennis in 1968, featuring prize money for all players. Two years later, he devised the men’s Grand Prix, which endured for two decades as a series of tournaments. This ultimately led to the Masters Championship and a bonus pool of earnings for a host of leading players. In 1968, Kramer was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. 1970’s In 1972, Kramer helped found the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and became its first executive director. In that role, he was leader of an ATP boycott of Wimbledon in 1973, as the organization fought for player independence. Golden Years Kramer played recreationally well into his 70s. He, along with his family, owned the Los Serranos Golf and Country Club near Chino Hills, California. The Kramer family also owned and operated the Jack Kramer Tennis Club in Rolling Hills Estates.

1950’s By the mid-1950s, Kramer was a powerful figure and advocate of the pro tour. He assumed the role as promoter in 1952, and would expand it into an international operation.

The last match Kramer watched was an exhibition this year between Pete Sampras and Marat Safin at the UCLA Tennis Center. Incidentally, during the 1980s, the Los Angeles Tennis Open was called the "Jack Kramer Open" — the only World Tennis Tour event named for a player.

1960’s The success of both the men’s and women’s pro tours, specifically Kramer's, eventually led to the establishment of

Jack Kramer transcended the sport and helped build tennis as we know it today. He is a once-in-a-lifetime legend.
