Little did we know in 1993 when we held a small Folk Day in Tenterden that 23 years later Tenterden Folk Festival would be one of the major events on the folk scene in the South East attracting visitors from all over England and even from Europe and beyond. The festival offers four days of folk song, music, dance, crafts and traditions. There are over 50 events taking place from Thursday evening to late Sunday night, all in friendly venues and many of them are free. Where tickets are required the cost is kept low to enable everyone to enjoy a variety of events. Most venues are in, or just off, the famous wide High Street in the historic town centre. All are within easy walking distance of each other and of the campsite. The map in this programme will help you find your way around the town. There are not many changes to the format this year and all of the popular features of the Festival are still there with a few added surprises. See the diary section for full details.

Your Festival Information The Festival starts with the Thursday evening concert, in the Town Hall, featuring the return of one of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show’s nominees for “folk singer of the year”, Jez Lowe, plus Hudson & Cutler and Mark Gibson. The festival then continues from early Friday morning to late Sunday night with concerts, music and song sessions, workshops, English Barn Dance, meet the guests and many other events.

Dance displays: The Festival attracts Morris sides and dance display teams from far and wide. They will take to the streets of the town centre on Saturday and Sunday together with other street entertainers. Dancers include local sides from Kent and Sussex as well as visiting teams from throughout England and our friends from Slovakia. Dance styles will include Cotswold, Border, Molly, Clog and Garland, as well as Appalachian and other international traditions. The ever popular procession will be on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. near The War Memorial in the High Street, passing through the town to finish at the Recreation Ground by the marquee. There you will be able to see more displays of dancing on the stage in the marquee.

Workshops and meet the guest sessions As an educational charity we like to offer you the opportunity to attend participatory workshops. We also offer you chances to “Meet” some of the guests in informal sessions which may be a mixture of chat, questions and answers and a few songs, tunes or stories. Gavin Atkin’s workshop on playing traditional folk music looks like becoming a regular feature. It is open to new players and those with some experience as well those who attend his regular “classes” at the Gun & Spitroast at Horsmonden. Vic and Tina Smith will present a multimedia show celebrating the centenary of the birth of the late Bob Copper. Pete Castle presents “Not So Great Expectations”. An exploration of the first convicts in Botany Bay (as seen in the BBC2 TV series Banished) through traditional songs, diary entries and the writings of Charles Dickens in Great Expectations.

Concerts: Festival guests can be seen at our main concert venues on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Tenterden Club in Church Road, just off the High Street, is ideal for the larger concerts with smaller, intimate, acoustic concerts and other events in The Saddlery at the side of The White Lion.

Chris Harrison from Morrigan will tell us about Joseph Skipsey and his life and times in his workshop on Carols from the Coalfields

Sing-a-rounds and music sessions

Venues include The Town Hall, Recreation Ground, High Street, Tenterden Club, The Saddlery and St Mildred’s Church and Church Hall. Events will also take place in The Vine, The White Lion, The William Caxton, The Woolpack. There will also be music and song in The Indulgence Cake & Coffee House. Fringe events include dancers and singers visiting Kent and East Sussex Railway, West View Hospital and Old Dairy Brewery.

One of the highlights of the Festival for many of the regular participants is the numerous friendly and informal sing-a-rounds and song and music sessions. With sessions taking place in four pubs there is sure to be one that suits your taste or mood. You are also welcome to just come along and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere even if you do not want to take part.

Other guests will be presenting workshops and details of these are all in the diary section. (See the events diary on page 15 for details)

Camping We offer ticket holders informal camping in a field very close to the town centre and are again putting portable toilets on the camp site. There is no mains water supply in the field so please come prepared. We have a change to the campsite this year. If dry all campers will use Morphs Field just over the level crossing but before the Railway car park. If wet tents will stay

in Morphs but caravans will revert to the field we have used for several years. Morphs has been rather neglected but Mr Edwards is working hard to improve this.

Join us at The National Mountain Centre for a weekend of guided walking and acoustic open mic sessions. Walk during the day then sing, play, perform or just watch and enjoy in the evening. Two nights accommodation, meals, guided walks and entertainment for just £160.

Alternative camping: There are also several small commercial and Caravan Club campsites nearby offering all the facilities we cannot.

The costs for the weekend are: Thursday to Sunday nights (up to 4 nights) Camping; Per caravan/campervan £28 Per tent £22. Cheques payable to: “Tenterden Folk Day Trust”

Events of particular interest

FOLK-AT-THE-DRUM The Club meets every Thursday at ‘The Drum’ Inn at N. Stanford, Stone Street (Between Cant’ & Hythe)

15th October - Steve Turner 19th November - Graeme Knights & Jim Mageean Thursday evening Town Hall concert: This concert is sponsored by Around Kent Folk and we thank Kathy and Bob Drage for their support. This year’s special guest is one of BBC Radio 2 Folk Show’s nominees for “folk singer of the year”, Jez Lowe. Support comes from the well known local duo Hudson & Cutler and Tenterden’s own Mark Gibson. The venue is the Assembly Rooms upstairs in The Town Hall. Doors open at 7 p.m. for a 7.30 start. Weekend Tickets do not cover this fundraising event. All tickets are £12 each.

Welcome Barn Dance (Friday): The English barn dance is a regular and popular feature of the Festival. This year we welcome The Phoenix Dance Band (above), a hard-swinging traditional style dance band who specialise in playing for ceilidhs and English barn dances at festivals. The caller for the evening is Vic Smith, a regular visitor to Tenterden. Please do not bring your own food or drinks.

Sea songs and shanty events: Sea songs and shanties are always a popular feature at folk festivals and our “Cinque

Ports sea songs and shanties” session in the Tenterden Club on Saturday afternoon often sees the “House Full” sign go up. Shanties will also be heard in other events over the weekend.

United Folk Orchestras: In 2014 The Yardarm and Sussex Folk Orchestras visited us for the first time and they are back this year as the United Folk Orchestra. You will find them in St Mildred’s Church on Sunday afternoon.

The Honk Project: Applause Rural Touring sponsors live arts locally in Kent and Sussex and it is thanks to them that the streets of Tenterden will be visited by The Honk Project’s Dancing Day Trippers. Watch out for them on Saturday.

Old Dairy Brewery Tours: Offering tours of its new brewery to visitors to Tenterden Folk Festival on Friday and Saturday. You can also sample some of the beers and visit the brewery shop. The brewery is over the level crossing in Station Yard. (Details of all other events can be found in the programme section on pages 15-18).

Terms and conditions Children under 16 will only be admitted if accompanied by an adult and subject to normal licensing rules in licensed premises. Tickets permit entry only to specified event(s). No guarantee can be given that all events will run exactly to programme or that space will be available for all full weekend ticket holders at some events. However every effort will be made to ensure that holders of advance tickets are admitted, but please arrive early to avoid disappointment. TFF reserves the right to refuse admission or to amend this programme as necessary. Refunds will only be made at the discretion of TFF.
