Welcome

to the 24th Festival:

The festival continues to offers four days of folk song, music, dance, crafts and traditions with over 50 events taking place from Thursday evening to late Sunday night and all in friendly venues. There are many free events in the streets, on the Recreation Ground and in the pubs. Where tickets are required the cost is kept low to enable everyone to enjoy a variety of events. Most venues are in, or just off, the famous wide High Street in the historic town centre. All are within easy walking distance of each other and of the campsite. The map in this programme will help you find your way around the town. See the diary section for full details. Thanks go to the people who have supported the festival by providing accommodation for our guests: Alan Castle, Maggie Gibson, Maureen and David Jones, David Pleasants and Margaret White.

Your Festival The Pre-festival concert on Thursday evening features Martin Carthy with support from Greg Harper and Jack Pound. The Town Hall is an ideal venue for this friendly concert. The festival continues from early Friday morning to late Sunday night with concerts, music and song sessions, workshops, English Barn Dance, meet the guests and even two events linked with book launches.

Campsite: The campsite will again be in Morphs Field which is on the left just over the level crossing and before the Railway car park. Mr Edwards is continuing to work on improving what had been a sadly neglected field.

Dance displays: The Festival attracts Morris sides and dance display teams from far and wide. They take to the streets of the town centre on Saturday and Sunday together with other street entertainers. Dancers include local Morris sides from Kent and Sussex as well as visiting teams from throughout England and our friends from Slovakia. Dance styles will include Cotswold, Border, Molly, Clog and Garland, as well as Appalachian and other international traditions. As well as dancing in and around the town centre, dancers will also visit Kent and East Sussex Railway and Old Dairy Brewery. The popular procession on Saturday starts at 3.00 p.m. near The War Memorial in the High Street, passes through the town centre to finish at Recreation Ground by the marquees. There you will see more displays of dancing on the stage in the marquee.

Concerts and Folk Clubs: Festival guests can be seen at our main concert venues on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These include the Tenterden Club, Town Hall and The Saddlery at The White Lion. The Saddlery is also the venue for our new evening Folk Clubs on Saturday and Sunday. Check the map to locate all the venues.

Sing-a-rounds and Song and music sessions: One of the highlights of the Festival for many of the regular participants is the numerous friendly and informal sing-a-rounds and song and music sessions. Sessions take place in four pubs so there is sure to be one that suits your taste or mood. You are also welcome to just come along and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere even if you do not want to take part.

Workshops and meet the guest sessions: As an educational charity we like to offer the opportunity to attend participatory workshops or informal talks on folk related topics. This year they include: Greg Harper on song writing Gavin Atkin’s workshop on playing traditional folk music has become a regular event and is open to new players and those with some experience as well those who attend his regular “classes” during the year. Other guests including Pete Castle, Vic and Tina Smith, Adrian O and others will be presenting workshops and details of these are all in the diary section. We also offer you chances to “Meet” some of the guests in informal sessions which may be a mixture of chat, questions and answers and a few songs, tunes or stories.

Venues and public houses: Venues include The Town Hall, Recreation Ground, High Street, Tenterden Club, The Saddlery and St Mildred’s Church and Church Hall. Events also take place in The Vine, The White Lion, The William Caxton and The Woolpack and there will also be music and song in Indulgence Cake & Coffee House..

(See the map on page 20 to find the locations of the venues mentioned on this page) 2

He finally retired from full time touring 1999 but did do a short reprise tour in 2010 including a return visit to Tenterden Folk Festival. Festival guests gather to remember Roy and sing the songs he loved.
