Four days of folk song, music, dance crafts and traditions Tenterden Folk Festival - Registered Charity No. 1038663

Welcome

Festival Contacts

to the Festival:

Tenterden Folk Festival 2018 is dedicated to the memory of three people who were all involved in the festival for over 20 years and who we all miss. Bob and Kathy Drage, who both died in December, were well-known to festivals goers as they would spend much of the time running events in the Saddlery and were often the face of sing-a-rounds in the Woolpack Barn. They also sponsored the Thursday evening concert through Around Kent Folk magazine which they ran for over 14 years. Martin Lawrenson, a local man with a love of all things Tenterden, sadly died in June. Martin first started helping us getting involved with the setup and breakdown of festival equipment and went on to get more and more involved with meeting and greeting stall holders in the early mornings, street collecting and much more. He made many friends amongst the dancers and was often found socialising with Morena Slovak Dancers. They were, all three irreplaceable.

Your Festival This year your festival starts on Thursday evening with the AKF sponsored fundraising concert. This is the only event not covered by the Full Weekend Tickets and features John Conolly with support from Steve Turner and potentially a surprise guest. The Town Hall is an ideal venue for this friendly concert. The festival continues until late Sunday night with concerts, music and song sessions, workshops, English Barn Dance and many other events. Having passed the 25 year mark last year we were planning a few changes this year and due to circumstances have had to make a few others. Julie Felix is our special guest as part of her 80th birthday year. We also have some young folk with us in the shape of Georgia Lewis and friends, Granny’s Attic and Alice Jones. There are also more women on the guest list this year.

Campsite: The campsite will again be in Morphs Field which is on the left just over the level crossing and before the Railway car park. Mr Edwards is continuing to work hard on improving the field.

Dance displays: The Festival attracts Morris sides and dance display teams from far and wide, including regular teams and some new ones. They take to the streets of the town centre on Saturday and Sunday together with other street entertainers. Dancers include local Morris sides from Kent and Sussex as well as visiting teams from throughout England and our friends from Slovakia who are also hoping to bring a junior group with them this year. Dance styles will include Cotswold, Border, Molly, Clog and Garland, as well as Appalachian, Bhangra and other international traditions. The popular procession on Saturday starts at 3 p.m. near The War Memorial in the High Street, passes through the town centre to finish on the Recreation Ground by the marquees. There you will see more displays of dancing on the stage in the marquee.

Concerts and Folk Clubs: Festival guests can be seen at our main concert venues throughout the extended weekend. These include the Tenterden Club, Town Hall and The Saddlery at The White Lion. Check the map to locate all the venues.

Song and music sessions: The numerous friendly and informal sing-a-rounds and song and music sessions are, for many, one of the highlights of the Festival. Sessions take place in four pubs so there is sure to be one that suits your taste or mood. Come along and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere even if you do not want to take part. Workshops and meet the guest sessions: The Festival also offers the opportunity to attend other events which may offer the chance to participate, ask a few questions or just sit and listen, and informal talks on folk related topics. Check out the diary section for full details.

Album launch: There will be special event to launch Steve Turner’s new album which features guest musicians Eliza Carthy, Martin Simpson and Sam Carter. The album, which should be finished by the end of August, will hopefully be available to buy.

Venues and public houses: Venues include The Town Hall, Recreation Ground, High Street, Tenterden Club, The Saddlery and St Mildred’s Church. We are also using the Glebe Hall at the end of Church Road. Events also take place in the Vine, White Lion, William Caxton and Woolpack.

(See the map on page 20 to find the locations of the venues mentioned on this page) 4

Craft Stalls

Events of particular interest “Here at the Fair” (Saturday evening): Mick Ryan’s sixth ‘folk opera’ will be performed at Tenterden Folk Festival on Saturday and is sponsored by GMP Accountants of Tenterden. Mick’s previous shows were “A Day’s Work”, “The Voyage”, “Tanks for the Memory”, “The Navvy’s Wife” and “The Pauper’s Path” and were all very well received and reviewed on the folk scene and beyond. The scene is set at a country fair in 1850. A group of travelling showmen and women arrive and set out their stalls. Using 20 of Mick’s original songs along with a little dialogue, monologue and spoken verse, the show tells the back stories of this group of society’s outsiders and puts their wandering lives of music, song, dance, lights and laughter in the social and political context of the time. The cast comprises Pete Morton, Geoff Lakeman, ‘Granny’s Attic’ (Cohen BraithwaiteKilcoyn, George Sansome and Lewis Wood), Heather Bradford, Alice Jones and of course Mick himself. A high quality lineup of singers and musicians. Mick Ryan was described by ‘Living Tradition’ magazine as “an outstanding singer, songsmith and musical playwright” and has made many albums which have all received reviews. His songs are much sung on the folk scene. Heather Bradford has had prominent roles in several of Mick’s previous productions and received outstanding notices. According to fRoots “The strength of her performance as the Irish mother in ‘A Day’s Work’ was crucial to the success of this outstanding show” Pete Morton is an energetic and charismatic performer of original and traditional songs and regarded as one of the best songwriters on the folk scene. He is popular in folk clubs and at festivals in the UK, on the continent and in America.

Geoff Lakeman’s fine singing, and musicianship, on the rare Crane duet concertina have made him a favourite at folk clubs, festivals, theatres and arts centres both at home and abroad. On his new album, “After All These Years”, Geoff is backed by his three sons Sean, Sam and Seth and daughters-in-law Kathryn Roberts and Cara Dillon. A real folk family! Alice Jones is a singer, dancer and multiinstrumentalist, playing keyboards, clarinet, whistle and guitar. She was described by ‘fRoots’ as “a seriously impressive singer”, Granny’s Attic has been acclaimed by Living Tradition as “the future of English folk”. The band, all young music graduates, consists of Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne on anglo concertina and melodeon, George Sansome on guitar euphonium and Lewis Wood on fiddle. Most of the cast are also appearing in other events over the weekend.

AKF Concert (Thursday evening): In previous years the Thursday evening concert has been sponsored by Bob and Kathy Drage through Around Kent Folk magazine. As AKF has now been taken on by TFF we have decided to continue to use any surpluses generated by the magazine to help fund the concert. This year’s special guest is John Conolly “the man from Fiddlers Green”. The venue is the Assembly Rooms upstairs in The Town Hall. Doors open at 7.00 p.m. for a 7.30 start. Full Weekend Tickets do not cover this fundraising event. All tickets are £12.00 each. A stair lift is available if needed. Welcome barn dance (Friday evening): The English barn dance is a regular and popular feature of the Festival. This year’s barn dance band are our friends Morrigan who we normally hear as a cappella singers but are also a popular dance band. (Details of all other events can be found in the programme section on pages 21-24).
