Welcome
Festival Contacts
to the Festival:
This year’s Tenterden Folk Festival, the 27th, starts on Thursday evening with a concert sponsored by Around Kent Folk magazine and runs until late on Sunday evening. All the details can be found in the diary section.
Festival information: E: info@tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk W: www.tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk W: (craft fair) www.tenterdencraftfair.org.uk W: (AKF) www.aroundkentfolk.org.uk
Lewis Brockway became a well known and much loved face at the festival while acting as official photographer between 2007 to 2017. Lewis was unable to be at TFF 2018 and sadly passed away shortly after. Watch out for a display of Lewis’s photos at this year’s festival. We have recruited some new committee members since last year. Fiona Eldridge, Richard Cartwright and Ronnie Williamson add more experience, skills and enthusiasm to the team and will help to keep the festival going from strength to strength for the foreseeable future. Roger Quinton also joined the committee as nominee of Tenterden Town Council replacing Jean Curteis who is this years Mayor. This year’s festival starts on Thursday evening with a concert sponsored by AKF and runs until

Your Festival This year your festival starts on Thursday evening with the AKF sponsored fundraising concert. This is the only event not covered by the Full Weekend Tickets and features Will Pound and Eddy Jay with support from other festival guests. The Town Hall is an ideal venue for this friendly concert. The festival continues until late Sunday night with concerts, music and song sessions, workshops, English Barn Dance and many other events. The guests this year include some old friends of the festival and some who have not been to Tenterden before such as Dan McKinnon from Canada, The Snapes, Stan Graham and Eddy Jay. Other guests such as Will Pound have been to Tenterden as part of a band or a Morris side but are here this year in a different capacity.
Campsite: The campsite will again be in
Morphs Field which is the one on the left just over the level crossing and before the Railway car park. Mr Edwards continues to work hard on improving the field.
Dance displays: The Festival continues to
attract Morris sides and dance display teams from far and wide, including regular teams and some new ones. They take to the streets of the town centre on Saturday and Sunday together with other street entertainers. It looks as if we will have many more dancers on the Sunday than in previous years while still maintaining the number performing on the Saturday. Dancers include local Morris sides from Kent and Sussex as well as visiting teams from throughout England and our friends from Slovakia. Dance styles will include Cotswold, Border, Molly, Clog and Garland, as well as Appalachian, Bollywood and other international traditions and styles.
The popular procession on Saturday starts at 3.00.p.m. near The War Memorial in the High Street, passes through the town centre to finish on the Recreation Ground by the marquees. There you will see more displays of dancing on the stage in the marquee.
Concerts and Folk Clubs: Festival guests can be seen at our main concert venues throughout the extended weekend. These include the Tenterden Club, Town Hall and The Saddlery at The White Lion. Check the map to locate all the venues. Song and music sessions: The numerous
friendly and informal sing-a-rounds and song and music sessions are, for many, one of the highlights of the Festival. Sessions take place in four pubs so there is sure to be one that suits your taste or mood. Come along and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere even if you do not want to take part.
Workshops and meet the guest sessions:
The Festival also offers the opportunity to attend other events which may offer the chance to participate, ask a few questions or just sit and listen, and informal talks on folk related topics. Check out the diary section for full details.
Venues and public houses: Venues include
The Town Hall, Recreation Ground, High Street, Tenterden Club, The Saddlery and St Mildred’s Church and the Glebe Hall. Events also take place in the recently refurbished Vine, White Lion, William Caxton and we are also back in the Woolpack, which is under new management.
If you would like to see and try some Bollywood dances catch up with the Be Bollywood dancers.
(See the map on page 18 to find the locations of the venues mentioned on this page) 2

Events of particular interest The Thursday AKF evening concert: The fundraising concert on Thursday evening continues to be sponsored by Around Kent Folk magazine. This year’s special guests are Will
Pound and Eddy Jay supported by Bob and Gill Berry. The venue is the Assembly
Rooms upstairs in The Town Hall. Doors open at 7.00 p.m. for a 7.30 start. Full Weekend Tickets do not cover this fundraising event. All tickets are £12 each. A stair lift is available if needed.
The English barn dance (Friday evening):
The English barn dance is a regular and popular feature of the Festival. This year’s barn dance band are popular local band Foot Down and your caller will be John Sweeney who runs regular dances in nearby Hothfield and other local towns.
All the birds of the air: Vic & Tina Smith bring you their new multimedia show that celebrates our feathered friends in song, tune, verse and lore as well as many photos. The live performance will be interspersed with a few recordings of relevant songs by some of Britain’s finest traditional song source singers.
We also have: “Dan sings Stan” Dan McKinnon on Stan Rogers “Cyril said it all before ….” With Tom Lewis “Songs of Charlie Bridger, from Stone-in-Oxney” with Andy Turner The list of events just goes on and on.
Guest you may not know: Dan McKinnon: We are delighted to have a
special guest from Canada who will feature in several Festival events. Dan McKinnon grew up in a slightly extended family and his maternal grandmother beguiled Dan and his siblings with countless tales of turn-of-the-century Halifax, of living through magical days and lifealtering events. Now Dan beguiles us with his songs.
Stan Graham: Stan was a professional
soldier for 36 years. He joined the British Army as an Apprentice Chef in 1963 and retired in 2001 having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his career as a Soldier and Chef, he travelled the world, cooked for the Royal Family and held the position of Senior Technical Instructor at the Army School of Catering. His musical journey began, shortly after he retired from the Army, when he joined York’s highly acclaimed Black Swan Folk Club as a resident singer.
Peter and Barbara Snape: Peter and
Barbara have a great love of traditional British folk music especially that of the north of England where they live. Their songs and music offer a refreshing and individual approach which effortlessly embraces the carefully researched repertoire of material they love performing. They are convivial company, a proven quality act and a close-knit partnership that’s fully assured in its research, preparation and performance, and deservedly popular with audiences.
(Details of all other events can be found in the programme section on pages 19-22).
The small print Children under 16 will only be admitted if accompanied by an adult and subject to normal licensing rules in licensed premises. Tickets permit entry only to specified event(s). No guarantee can be given that all events will run exactly to programme or that space will be available for all full weekend ticket holders at all events. However every effort will be made to ensure that holders of advance tickets are admitted, but please arrive early to avoid disappointment. TFF reserves the right to refuse admission or to amend this programme as necessary. Refunds will only be made at the discretion of TFF. We do not sell or pass on personal details of ticket holders but such information may be used to send you news of future events. Festival events are often photographed. 13

This project has been started with the help of a grant from The Overstone Trust through Kent Community Foundation.
Workshop leaders include Morrigan, Richard Cartwright and Spud Jones. You may find some of the students at the Festival this year and next.
Tenterden Folk Festival is supported and/or partly funded by: Local authorities: Tenterden Town Council, Ashford Borough Council and Kent County Council Sponsors/Grant Funding: Applause Rural Touring, Gibbons Mannington & Phipps LLP, Shepherd Neame, Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Philberts, Tenterden & District Chamber of Commerce, My Tenterden Business Directory. The Festival could not happen without the support and co-operation of all the venues.
