Welcome back
Festival Contacts
to the Festival:
It was a very sad day back in June 2020 when we had to take the decision to postpone the 28th Tenterden Folk Festival due to be held the following October. Now, one year on, here we are at Tenterden Folk Festival 2021 which will run for four days from Thursday 30th September to Sunday 3rd October. This was only made possible thanks to the support we received during 2020 from Tenterden Town Council (TTC), Ashford Borough Council (ABC) and Kent Community Foundation, over a period when we had very little income but still had to pay out for rent of our storage units, insurance, subscriptions and many of the usual standing costs of running a charity. We were not idle during the lockdowns and still managed to run some Zoom workshops for a group of students with special needs at Wyvern School and also built a new website for the festival and the Trust’s other activities. We also managed to continue to publish Around Kent Folk with support from folk clubs across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Your Festival This year your festival starts on Thursday evening with the AKF sponsored concert. This is the only event not covered by the Full Weekend Tickets and features Scolds Bridle and Brian Peter. Jeff Warner has had to postpone his planned UK tour until 2022 so should be with us on Thursday 29th September 2022. Despite a few Covid enforced changes we have tried to keep the rest of the festival as near normal as possible. This year’s festival continues until late Sunday night with concerts, music and song sessions, workshops, English Barn Dance and many other events. Most of this year’s guests are those previously booked for 2020 and include old friends of the festival and some who have not been to Tenterden before such as Dora Darling, Tom Perry & Clive Brooks and a rare duo appearance by Chris and Steve Wilson. The appearance of the full Wilson Family has been delayed to 2022.
Campsite: The campsite will either be in the 10 acre field beyond the Railway carpark or in Morphs Field, just over the level crossing before the Railway car park. Mr Edwards continues to work hard on improving both fields. Dance displays: After the enforced Covid 19
break the Festival expects to attract Morris sides and dance display teams from far and wide, including most of the regular teams and some new ones. They will take to the streets of the town centre on Saturday and Sunday together with other street entertainers. Dancers include local Morris sides from Kent and Sussex as well as visiting teams from further afield. Dance styles will include Cotswold, Border, Molly, Clog and Garland, as well as Slovakian, Bulgarian, Appalachian and other international traditions and styles.
Concerts and Folk Clubs: Festival
guests can be seen at our main concert venues throughout the extended weekend. This year these include the Tenterden Club, Town Hall and St Mildred’s Church. Check the map to locate all the venues.
Song and music sessions: We are planning
to add some outdoor song and music sessions, weather permitting, to help you all feel comfortable and enjoy the festival. The numerous friendly and informal sing-arounds and song and music sessions are, for many, one of the highlights of the Festival. Government rules and regulations permitting, sessions will take place in various pubs and gardens, so there is sure to be one that suits your taste or mood. Come along and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere even if you do not want to sing or play.
Workshops and meet the guest sessions:
The Festival also offers the opportunity to attend other events which may offer the chance to participate, ask a few questions or just sit and listen, and informal talks on folk related topics. Check out the diary section for full details.
Venues and public houses: Venues include The Town Hall, Recreation Ground, High Street, Tenterden Club, St Mildred’s Church and the Glebe Hall. Events also take place in The Vine, White Lion, William Caxton, Woolpack, Ancient Boro. and at the Old Dairy Brewery.
The popular procession on Saturday will, as usual, start from near the War Memorial in the High Street at 3:00 p.m. The procession continues through the town centre to finish on the Recreation Ground by the marquees. (See the map on page 14 to find the locations of the venues mentioned on this page) 3

Workshops For Schools
TFF is running a project working in a small number of local schools, teaching the students and staff to sing and perform some folk songs and tunes and also some Morris dances. This
project has been funded by The Overstone Trust, Kent Community Foundation and a grant direct to Wyvern School from KCC. You may find some of the students at the Festival this year..
Tenterden Folk Festival is supported and/or partly funded by: Local authorities: Tenterden Town Council, Ashford Borough Council and Kent County Council Sponsors/Grant Funding: Applause Rural Touring, Brissenden Trust Gibbons Mannington & Phipps LLP, Kent Community Foundation, Philberts, Post Code Lottery, Tenterden & District Chamber of Commerce, My Tenterden Business Directory. The Festival could not happen without the support and co-operation of all the venues.

Children under 16 will only be admitted if accompanied by an adult and subject to normal licensing rules in licensed premises. Tickets permit entry only to specified event(s). TFF reserves the right to refuse admission or to amend this programme as necessary. Refunds will only be made at the discretion of TFF. Events of particular interest The Thursday AKF evening concert: The fundraising concert on Thursday evening is sponsored by Around Kent Folk magazine. This year’s guests are Sue Bousfield and Liz Walmisley who together are Scolds Bridle. Liz and Sue have been entertaining audiences throughout the UK and abroad since they were barely out of their teens. They are joined by Brian Peters, singer, multi-instrumentalist and performer of songs and music based in the English Folk tradition. Doors open at 7.00 p.m. for a 7.30 start. Full Weekend Tickets do not cover this fundraising event. All tickets are £12.00 each. A stair lift is available if needed.
The list of events just goes on and on.
Nick Dow will launch his new book, “A
Secret Stream” which brings together over a hundred folk songs and tunes including songs in the Anglo-Romany tongue, collected from English Gypsies by Victorian and Edwardian collectors such as Cecil Sharp, Ella Leather, Lucy Broadwood, George Borrow and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Guest you may not know: Chris and Steve Wilson: You may not know
The English barn dance (Friday evening):
Chris and Steve as a duo, but you will know them as two fifths of The Wilson Family. The whole family cannot be with us this year but we are delighted to host a rare duo appearance by Chris and Steve. With luck the full Wilson lineup will be with us in Tenterden for 2022.
Special shows include: Broomdasher’s
Dora Darling: Dora sings and plays guitar and also plays the fiddle and the tin whistle which she learnt when she lived in Ireland in the 1990’s. Dora has written many songs and tunes, influenced by her love for the Earth and the traditional music of the British Isles and Eastern Europe. Dora has the unusual ability to write songs which sound and feel magical, ancient and traditional.
The English barn dance is a regular and popular feature of the Festival. Assuming Covid restrictions allow, this year’s barn dance band will be The Tonic, a very popular and experienced local band. Your caller will be Fee Lock. The dance may be a bit different this year to help with Covid safety. Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady – part of a national tour of Churches. Check out https://youtu.be/_KNJonIVJ8g. The Gilchrist Collective (Peter & Barbara Snape, Brian Peters and Sue Burgess) present, Most Truly Yours, Aunt Anne, which celebrates the achievements of Anne Geddes Gilchrist OBE (1863-1954), who made an important collection of songs, tunes and folklore from her home in Lancashire and became a significant figure in the folk music world of the early 20th century. The Gilchrist Collective tell her story for the first time, using narrative, slides and a rich and varied selection of the songs she preserved.
Tom Perry & Clive Brooks: Tom and Clive
have been performing together at folk clubs and festivals since 2011. Their repertoire, which is delivered a cappella, consists of traditional songs and contemporary pieces written in the traditional vein. Most of their songs have choruses and audiences are encouraged to join in. They released their first CD, 100 Door To Door, in May 2018.
(Details of all other events can be found in the programme section on pages 15-18).
