From Makers with Love

Gifts at Ten Thousand Villages are made, one by one, by human hands. Hands that paint, sculpt, stitch and weave. From 30 countries around the developing world. From homes, where mothers do needlework while their babies sleep. From villages, where neighbors work together to create art and build community. From makers with love. For tradition, for the earth and its beauty. And for you, for the hope and joy that your purchases bring to them.

A Cup of Cheer It’s three generations baking cookies and sipping cocoa in the kitchen. It’s a group of old friends raising a glass by the fire. Coming home for the holidays is natural and nostalgic. So here’s to the good times and the joy of just being together.

With Love, From Vietnam

Using rich clay from their river shores, the people of Bat Trang, a village on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam, have been making pottery for more than a thousand years. The fifth generation of his family to practice ceramics, Tran Kinh learned the craft from his father. At the workshop he runs with his wife, every piece is shaped on a wheel or poured in a mold, then painted and glazed by hand. The Kinhs’ fair prices, consistent orders and good working conditions provide their 50 employees, most of them women, with money to supplement farming income or to help fund education for their children or themselves. Fair trade has both transformed the community and preserved their ancient arts and culture.

“[We’re] using the crafts of Peru and the traditions of Peru, but bringing new energy.” –Jill Rosenwald, Designer

CERAMICIST ALEX SOSA

The limited edition Black and Gold Collection is a concept created by Bostonbased ceramicist, artist and home goods designer Jill Rosenwald and brought to life by Alex Sosa and his team of craftspeople in Chulucanas, Peru. As the world’s original fair trader, we are committed to alleviating poverty around the world, continuing the work begun by our pioneering founder Edna Ruth Byler. In 1946 Byler visited Puerto Rico where she met women who struggled to find jobs and feed their families. She began selling the women’s embroidery work to friends and neighbors. The project that began in the trunk of her car is now known as Ten Thousand

Villages and provides income to 20,000 craftspeople in 30 developing countries. At Ten Thousand Villages, every product, every purchase, for more than 65 years, has been rooted in the principles of fair trade— fair prices, advance payments, long term relationships, design collaboration and environmental responsibility— giving people around the world a chance to make a better life.
