RE-IMAGINING CAREFREE LODGE LONG TERM CARE

The main public zone of Carefree Lodge features an indoor public artery and market that is connected through an atrium space to the above greenhouse garden, as well as spaces as such a cafe, gym, and barber and beauty salon.

URBAN REVEAL PAVILION
CIRCULATION THROUGH PAVILION
As a very pedestrian heavy artery, the Urban Reveal provides Queen St. W with a moment of rest and connection to nature commonly not seen along this area of the street. Despite the bustling character of Queen St. W, this pedestrian lane is very rarely frequented or even noticed by passerby’s. The pavilion enhances the community space by allowing for seating, passage/circulation, and engagement with nature. More community engagement with St. Patrick’s Square Park found behind the retail storefronts is encouraged through the implementation of this pavilion providing spillover space for the restaurant on the corner through the implementation of patio seating and tables. 7

MURAKAMI ART GALLERY
EXTERIOR RENDER
Designing for the artist Takashi Murakami allowed me to explore and push certain boundaries of a regular art gallery. His extravagant and colourful art requires an extravagant and conceptual approach. To accomplish this, the gallery has a large dome covered by one of his more famous art works, enveloping the gallery’s main lobby. Bridges that span through the atrium space on the upper floors allow for visitors to get a closer look at the mural on the dome. The exterior of the gallery uses large imitation-wood panels that soften up and naturally compliment his very unnatural style.

KING STREET CAFE + RESIDENCE
VIEW FROM ACROSS KING
Toronto is a growing city with a growing need for mixed-use buildings. For this project I was put to the task to design a building that would house a cafe, residence, and home office. My main concept with this design as to create a space that engages the geometry of the space and takes the usual experience of the interior envelope of a public space to a new level. Through the use of horizontal wood panels to form and mold the shape and experience of the cafe. This similar yet inverted geometry is also explored on the facade, and experienced from the inside by the residence of the apartment above.

COMPETITIONS + COLLABORATION
ALPS WELLNESS RETREAT | LOTUS In collaboration with Caleb Culome and Devanshi Jagota
In many cultures time and space are perceived as one entity, meaning only the present moment exists. Capturing this idea of presence, the LOTUS wellness retreat provides a continuous experience through built form. In this retreat the occupants boundaries are blurred, their orientation is ever changing, and moments of awe connect them with a sense of something greater. What occurs in this moment of peace is what we are facilitating through spaces such as bathing caves excavated underground, Saunas & Spas for physical decompression, and a communal Yoga & Dance hall. By progressing through space-time as you travel down the hall, moments, views, and energy changes and the metamorphosis of the universe can be felt. This is presence.

WINTER STATIONS 2021 |REFUGE In collaboration with Marwa Al-Saqqar
Our cities were built to provide refuge for its inhabitants — to make people feel safe and welcome. However, for many, systems are put in place to ensure that much of our cities’ infrastructures are hostile, violent, and designed to limit use. This installation explores what many, who can’t seek refuge, face. While at first glance the winterstation appears comfortable and fun, upon closer inspection, it becomes noticeable how inaccessible and unsafe they are. The “chairs” scattered around the station are fragile and unusable, similar to how public seating is designed to keep the homeless from using them to sleep. The central core of the station uses
bright and warm fabrics wrapped by chicken wire, evoking a sense of inaccessible comfort and warmth at an arm’s-length away, leaving the user feeling confused and hurt by the intentional restriction and denial to access refuge, which in many cases, already exists in space. TIMBER FEVER | THE NOOK
In collaboration with Andrea Au, Daniel Park, Eileen Xiao, and Rebekah Scanga WINNER OF HONOURABLE MENTION for our craftsmanship and design
Using half-lap and basic butt joinery, our team put together a 3 part accessible parklett for the Timber Fever Design Competition. This is a lumber design-build competition hosted by Ryerson University in which I got to take part in and work with both architecture and engineering students from various schools across Canada. Our parklett was designed for students to sit, socialize, and eat lunch or work at between classes and while still enjoying the outdoors.

COPENHAGEN URBAN PLANNING MAP “By being sweet to the pedestrian and the cyclist you hit five birds with one stone — you get a lively city, you get an attractive city, you get a safe city, you get a sustainable city, and you get a city that’s good for your health. These are all things we are very concerned about at this time in history.” — Jan Gehl, Copenhagen city planner By mapping out the cycling traffic in relation to Copenhagen’s neighbourhoods and areas of important urban development, we can begin to understand the importance of the pedestrian city. Copenhagen’s city planning and cycling system targets seamless pedestrian travel into the city core from all surrounding neighbourhoods whilst also reducing the dependency on major roads and highways.
