ACADEMIC PROJECTS
KING STREET CAFE + RESIDENCE Toronto is a growing city with a growing need for mixed-use buildings. For this project I was put to the task to design a building that would house a cafe, residence, and home office. My main concept with this design as to create a space that engages the geometry of the space and takes the usual experience of the interior envelope of a public space to a new level. Through the use of horizontal wood panels to form and mold the shape and experience of the cafe. This similar yet inverted geometry is also explored on the facade, and experienced from the inside by the residence of the apartment above.

The Parkdale community is one of the most vibrant and diverse neighbourhoods in Toronto. With this on mind, I wanted to design a library on the site of the current library that would engage and represent the community in a new way. The conceptual approach of the design combines three main schemes - flexible, polyvalent, and interactive spaces. This design provides active adaptable spaces enabling community members to change their layout. Polyvalent spaces are open to multiple interpretations/usages, as determined by the user.

Research station Located in Evergreen Brick Works, this Research Station is programmed to house two Biologists during their short-term stays at the research site. The station is located above the water in order to allow for aquatic sample collection that can be easily brought inside to the research lab. As the researchers would be spending a few days on site they are also provided with two beds of lodging purposes.

MURAKAMI ART GALLERY ADDRESS: 17 Maud St, Toronto STUDIO: ASC301: Design Studio II PROGRAMS: Rhino 6, AutoCAD, Photoshop, V-Ray, Illustrator
Designing for the artist Takashi Murakami allowed me to explore and push certain boundaries of a regular art gallery. His extravagant and colourful art requires an extravagant and conceptual approach. To accomplish this, the gallery has a large dome covered by one of his more famous art works, enveloping the gallery’s main lobby. Bridges that span through the atrium space on the upper floors allow for visitors to get a closer look at the mural on the dome. The exterior of the gallery uses large imitation-wood panels that soften up and naturally compliment his very unnatural style.

COLLABORATIVE
WINTER STATIONS ENTRY - Alan’s legacy In collaboration with Anna Halleran and Elizabeth De Jong Thinking about the theme of “migration”, we were inspired by the tragic story of Alan Kurdi, the Syrian refugee child found washed up on the shore of Turkey to design a shipwreck Winter Station. By bringing in playful elements for children to play with and use the winter station as a playground we create a juxtaposing irony between how this boat is the only lifeline refugee children have while children here have the privilege to use it for play.
ADDRESS: Woodbine Beach PROGRAMS: Rhino 6, Photoshop, Illustrator
ALAN'S LEGACY In 2015, 3 year old Alan Kurdi's body was found washed up on a Turkish beach. This unfortunately is the fate of many children when migrating to seek refuge. In our design we display a torn apart shipwreck painted in the colours Alan Kurdi was found wearing. As you approach the water you see the tall peak of the vessel, missing panels allowing your vision to pour inside the ship as the dangerous waters these refugee boats travel across would. The side of the wreck slopes down and opens up to the water. Rope with wooden beads strung through are hung across the openings. By bringing in these playful elements for children to play with and use the winter station as a playground we create a juxtaposing irony between how this boat is the only lifeline refugee children have while children here have the privilege to use it for play.

TIMBER FEVER - THE NOOK
In collaboration with Andrea Au, Daniel Park, Eileen Xiao, and Rebekah Scanga Using half-lap and basic butt joinery, our team put together a 3 part accessible parklett for the Timber Fever Design Competition. This is a lumber design-build competition hosted by Ryerson University in which I got to take part in and work with both architecture and engineering students from various schools across Canada. Our parklett was designed for students to sit, socialize, and eat lunch or work at between classes and while still enjoying the outdoors.
WINNER OF HONOURABLE MENTION for our craftsmanship and design

GROW OP 2018 - Stratum
On the Fabrication team with Tatiana Estrina, Jiaqi Liu, Shengyu Cai, Shengnan Gao, and Erin Pang Inspired by the Scarborough Bluffs, we created this series of panels, which emulate bedrock erosion and chart the effects of glacial movement and precipitation over 14,000 years. Using a chemical mixture of isomalt (a sugar substitute) and tonic water we were able create a substance that glows under a black light.

Experiential section showing the two main paths through the two towers of a scholarly residence. The two towers are sandwiched between the three main corridors of transportation; the road for cars on its West, the pedestrian path that cuts through the two towers, and the train tracks on the North-East. Each colour represented the various uses of the space from study space, place of rest and socialization, and circulation space. With the colours seeping into various zones as the mix and combine to form the experiences throughout the scholarly residence.
