If you are using link cloaking software there is a good chance that you are losing commissions. I know you've been told that if you don't hide your affiliate ID people will just replace it with theirs and steal your commissions. What some people have done is come up with cloaking software that cloaks both your links and removes the hop=YOURID from the status bar at the vendor's site. Another feature they claim it will do is allow you to bypass the vendor's sales page and go right to the order form. These programs do appear to work, but they all have one major flaw. That flaw is that they use iframes to do the cloaking at the vendor's site. Here's the problem with using iframes. Only third-party cookies can be set from within an iframe, and most browsers have them turned off by default. So why is that a problem? ClickBank, and most if not all other affiliate networks use cookies as their primary tracking method. In the case of ClickBank they do have other methods of tracking in case cookies are disable, but if there is a cookie it takes priority. So here's why it seems to work when you test the cloaking software. Your browser either doesn't have a CB cookie set or it has it set to your ID. Now when you click on your cloaked link you end up at the vendor's site with the URL cloaked. Let's assume no CB cookie is set on your browser. CB will use a secondary method of tracking your ID so when you click through to the order page you will see affiliate=YOURID and everything looks fine.

Here's why it doesn't work as you expect it to. When someone visits your site and sees your review or banner there's a good chance that they had clicked on a competitor's hoplink before arriving at your site. That means that they have a CB cookie set in their browser. Now when they click on your link the cookie wouldn't be reset to your ID because only third-party cookies can be set within an iframe. So since the cookie still contains your competitor's ID and cookies take priority your competitor will get the commission instead of you. So what can you do? From your end it's a simple matter to cloak your links to Clickbank. Here's how... Create a php file that redirects to your hoplink, and then on your sales page link to that file. Here's what I mean. Let's say that the link text is "Golf Swing" the normal HTML would be <a href="http://your hoplink">Golf Swing</a> Create a file called golf-swing.php and in that file put this, and nothing else.

header("Location: $vender"); exit; /* Make sure that code below does not get executed when we redirect. */ ?> Now change your link to this. <a href="golf-swing.php">Golf Swing</a> There you go, your links are cloaked. You may still see hop=YOURID in the location bar at your vendor's site. There may be two reasons for that.

The first is that they don't know how to cloak the URL. Just explain that they can do it by changing the landing page to their site/landing-page.php and then make that page redirect to their site using the same technique I showed you to cloak your links. The second reason is that in some cases cloaking the URL may actually cause the affiliates to lose commissions.

The explanation for how it could cost the affiliates money is too long to include here, so here's a link to our site that explains it. In summery stay away from any cloaking method that uses frames or iframes.
