When he first set foot on the moon from the Apollo 11 Lunar Module in 1969 Astronaut Neil Armstrong proclaimed, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Leading up to that historic moment NASA had taken many small steps with several setbacks-the first mission, Apollo 1, was a catastrophe (the crew was killed in a fire). But led by President John F Kennedy's challenge of "landing a man on the Moon" by the end of the decade (1960s), our nation never looked back. One small step, that's all it takes. It doesn't matter whether you are a student learning a language, an astronaut preparing to set foot on the moon, or an engineer designing a new type of iPod. One small step leads to another, and another (bigger), and another (bigger still). The key is to build on the momentum and not look back. Today, it seems many engineers and technical professionals are reluctant to take that first step. They believe they can get from the earth to the moon in one giant step. Technology is partly at fault. The laptop on an engineer's desk has millions of times more processing power than the computer Neil Armstrong used aboard Apollo 11. A world of information is available at our fingertips and yet it seems we never have enough time to manage it. Corporate managers are often pressured to take giant steps and if they aren't successful then lack of time is often to blame. A project is flagged with crucial deadlines that are often unattainable, which puts stress on everyone involved. Time management then becomes a major issue but doesn't really target the underlying issue in that the engineer's (employee) personal life can suffer The engineer has no control over "giant steps" but he can control his own life by taking one small step at a time to improve time management within the context of personal growth. It can start with the engineer's family life-a small step could be to have breakfast a few times a week with the wife and children instead of racing off to Starbucks every morning. A second small step at work could be cultivating a louder voice by speaking up more in meetings and giving a brown bag lunch presentation. A third small step in the engineer's personal life could be to turn off the Xbox and get turned on to some articles about something he's always dreamed of doing (rock climbing, learning to fly, etc). The film maker Woody Allen said, "Eighty percent of success is showing up." This statement fits right along with taking small steps. The first step-showing up-requires a commitment and small steps mean nothing if the engineer is not committed to them.

Doyle Matthews is a former U.S. Foreign Service officer and civilian radio engineer who has had over sixty-five visas stamped in a shoebox full of passports (including diplomatic). He has written four novels, two of which are in publication http://doylematthewsnovels.com Nowadays, he spends his time between Los Angeles and Bangkok. The two "City of Angels" provide provocative material to populate his "idea" files for future stories and articles. Mr. Matthews' current passion is to help stressed out overworked Silicon Valley engineers, who are beset by deadlines to find the time to grow as individuals and get a life. http://doylematthewsnovels.com/engineers-guide
