As a truck driver, if you find that each DOT inspection that you go through is an inconvenience and a waste of time; chances are that you are not alone. It is important to remember that DOT inspections are in place to ensure your safety, as well as the rest of the motoring public. You can speed up the time that you spent at DOT inspections and also avoid receiving any citations by developing a daily routine. Many truckers may view these routine steps as common sense and basics that every driver already does, but unfortunately the more seasoned they get, the "basics" are often times overlooked. Following DOT compliance and the regulations are very important and you and your truck are both checked at inspection sites and scales to ensure all regulations are met. One advantage a truck driver has is that in most cases an inspection site and weigh scales are at a fixed location. Signs warn that you will be approaching them, giving you time to quickly update your log book. Dot vehicles are the "mobile inspections" that will pull you over without any warning. If you're not constantly within the DOT regulations, the officers in the DOT vehicles will not hesitate in issuing you a citation. To ensure that a truck driver passes a DOT inspection, a trucker should perform a pre trip inspection before each trip. Even when trips are short, and there could be several new trips in a single day, a new pre trip inspection could prove worthy if a rock or any other object broke a turn light, break light or any other lights that are on the truck and trailer. It is much easier to fix a broken lamp than it is to get held up at a DOT inspection as they cite you for that broken lamp. Also, it doesn't take long for a truck tire to suddenly lose pressure or a brake line to appear worn and a mud flap to come off. Taking time for that pre trip inspection will be well worth it. An updated log book is also very important. Many inspectors associate a clean, neat and updated log book to a professional and safe driver. Having a log book that is legible, neat and with carefully drawn lines will impress the DOT inspector and in some cases an inspector will cut a truck driver some slack based on the neatness and thoroughness of their log book. As stated earlier in the article, these steps are pretty basic, but none the less, they are essential when it comes to passing a random stop each and every time. A trucker that takes the time to perform a pre trip inspection and also keeps his or her log book neat, thorough and updated are more likely to be within the regulations appose to the truckers that overlook DOT laws so they can

get to their destination sooner.
