Harris Pop! Hotel

Type – Interior

Design (built) Designed at – PT Enviro Tec Indonesia Skills flexed – 3D modelling, Sketch Space Planning, Interior design, Detail drawings, Material boards and scheduling Harris Pop! Hotel Surabaya is a hospitality project located in the well-known area of Gubeng, Surabaya. The design of this project combines Harris Hotel, a five-star hotel, with Pop! Hotel, a low-budget hotel in a unique and friendly lifestyle hotel design, that combines both business and leisure. Still under the specific guidelines of the hotel management, we added our unique design touch to each amenities, from the material finishing to the furniture’s design, creating a distinctive ambience to this particular hotel branch. Our design theme was to incorporate natural elements and local cultures, e.g. unfinished wood and concrete, batik pattern, into the hotel’s modern design. As a Junior Architect in this project, I assisted in creating interior design presentation sheets, mood boards, material boards and scheduling, interior working drawings, and 3D modelling. My focus was working on the conceptual and schematic designs of the hotel rooms (standard and suites), kid’s daycare, 3D modelling, detail drawings of the ballroom and foyer, and architectural and interior material scheduling.

PREFUNCTION AREA Harris Hotel’s Prefunction Area The Prefunction area is dominated with neutral colours of beige and brown shades with touches of bright orange, the hotel’s signature colour. The walls consist of two materials, light timber strips and grey textured fabric (representing a concrete look), mounted in a slanted manner with recessed strip lighting accents in between. To give the space an open and bright feeling yet maintaining a lush ambience, both the columns and ceiling are concealed by bronze mirrors, with etched lights on the latter.

Harris Hotel - Prefunction Area Grey fabric wall panels continue to enclose the walls of the ballroom entrance from the prefunction area, however, they’re installed differently from the rest of the space to indicate significance room transition. To maintain the design theme, protruding columns are concealed with timber strips and recessed light strips. On the other hand, glass walls are used to separate the prefunction are with the meeting rooms and escalators, allowing more exposure to the space. I worked on the wood and fabric wall installations of the prefunction area, in which I studied the patterns and construction, completed detail drawings and material scheduling, and updated the 3D model.

SUITE ROOM Harris Hotel - Suite Room Mood Board The design concept started with a mood board, composed of key materials, features and furniture of the room. Following the design theme, the suite room is strongly dominated by natural finished material and neutral colours, e.g. whitewash wood, exposed white brick textured walls, concrete-like grey homogenous tiles, and terrazzo. The colours of light wood, white, and shades of grey create a homey and restful ambience, while the pop of orange gives a fresh touch to the space. The furniture design itself is simple and contemporary, with accents of industrial pieces, i.e. lighting, to give the room a morden edge.

Harris Hotel - Suite Room (Pantry & Living Area) For the suite room, white brick textured paint is used to compliment the white ash wood flooring and furniture, adding a rustic feeling to the space. Grey dominates the homogenous tile flooring and textured fabric of the furniture. The hotel’s signature orange colour is used as accents pieces throughout the space. Bold-patterned carpets and industrial lamp fixtures adorn the room adding a modern and stylish twist.

DINO KIDS CLUB Harris Hotel - Dino Kid’s Club While parents enjoy facilities at the hotel, their children can play in its daycare facility. The main concept of the room is a playful jungle, home of Dino, the Harris dinosaur. Tree-shaped cabinets and decorations fill the space, creating a fun ambience to engage the children’s imagination. Natural materials are also implemented in the kid’s club, e.g. white ash wood finishing, rattan, combined with cheerful vibrant colours. I worked on studying and collecting image references, create the design concept of the space, mood board, sketched plan, 3D modelling, conduct material research.

Type – Interior

Design, Architecture Designed at – PT Enviro Tec Indonesia Skills flexed – Interior design planning, Mood boards, Material schedules Alorie Azure De Pasir Bali is a boutique resort set on the unique black pearl beach in Central West Bali. A sensitive approach to planning has generated a U-shaped building with two wings that open up to the sea, allowing each of its 35 luxury seaside suites to have fantastic sea views. The choice of materials is textured and warm, from stained concrete walls to natural stone and recycled timber, creating a rustic and traditional ambience to the thoughtfully planned units. I was the project’s Person In Charge (PIC) who, under the principal architect, carried the responsibility of communicating with the client, suppliers, and consultants, arranging meetings, and ensuring the project runs according to the work timeline. As a Junior Architect, I was involved in developing the architectural facade, schematic stage presentation sheets, interior design, interior design mood boards, and material schedules. My main focuses were to study and develop the wooden louvres building enclosure, develop the typical studio rooms and junior suites.

FACADE STUDY Alorie Azure De Pasir Bali - Building Enclosure To maximize natural air circulation, the building enclosure covering the resort’s hallway and the fire stairs, consist of open wooden horizontal louvres. These louvres are made from black charcoal recycled timber, matching the colour of the black pearl beach sand. In between the louvres, window boxes displays Balinese artefacts, creating a ‘gallery wall’ for the guests to enjoy. At night, the internal lights shine through the facade, turning it into an exquisite lantern to its surroundings. Matching the hallway facade, the same building enclosure is also used to conceal the several rooms on the other side of the building. I worked on developing alternatives for the building enclosure, which includes 3D modelling, dimension and construction studying and detailing.

TYPICAL STUDIO A Alorie Azure De Pasir Bali - Typical Studio A Located on the ground floor, this studio unit has exclusive access to the main public swimming pool through its private deck and dipping area. Hanging plants provide privacy to each deck. The studio is divided into two levels, where on the upper-level guest can find the bed and bathroom area, and at the lower level, a living and dining area. By having a higher level, guests can enjoy an unobstructed outside view when they wake up. Warm and textured materials dominate the room, e.g. rattan, natural stones, timber textured stained concrete, and recycled wood, with accents of traditional Balinese textiles.

Design Designed at – PT Enviro Tec Indonesia Skills flexed – Site Survey & Analysis, Planning, 3D Modelling Rainbow Hill Golf Resort Nothern Zone Masterplan is a massive 104-hectare conceptual masterplan project located in Sentul, Bogor, West Java. It has two main areas which are an existing golf course and resort in the southern zone, and the undeveloped northern zone. I was assigned to assist in planning the northern part of the masterplan. Its main concept was to plan a community that ranges from low-density houses to mid-rise apartments, with complete facilities including a lifestyle centre, Agro Park, school and camping grounds, and also boutique offices. The masterplan was designed inspired by the site’s steep terrain. I was the Person In Charge (PIC) of the project who, under the principal architect, carried the responsibility of communicating with the client, suppliers, and consultants, arranging meetings, and ensuring the project runs according to the work timeline. As a Junior Architect/Urban Designer, I assisted in conducting surveys and researches of the existing site, contour analysis, conceptual sketched master plan, conceptual presentation sheets for clients, 3D modelling, and develop the conceptual masterplan.

The circular formation allows all plots to have double frontages, where users can access it through the outer perimeter, served for the vehicular access road, and also via the vehicle-free inner perimeter, abutting the inner court. The latter area becomes a pedestrian-focused zone, encouraging interaction among users. The boutique offices are located near the entrance of the masterplan, granting easy access to and from the tollway.

Design Designed at – Ministry of Public Works and Housing Skills flexed – Layout & Editing, Illustration In celebration of its 70 years of service in Indonesia, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing organised several events that included an exhibition of the highlights of its works, named “Pameran Infrastruktur dan Perumahan untuk Rakyat” or Exhibition of Infrastructures and Housings for Public. During my time working for the ministry, other than assisting in facilitating meetings and partnership with foreign parties, such as World Bank, I was also often assigned to design several presentations and publications, which includes this booklet. The colours and illustrations used in the design were inspired by the ministry logo and exhibition theme. I was going for a formal sleek design with a festive touch.
