“The Timeless Way of Building” “The buildings that I build very often have a dreamlike reality. I don't mean by that they have a fantasy quality at all, in fact quite the reverse. They contain in some degree the ingredients that give dreams their power... stuff that's very close to us...I believe that all centers that appear in space whether they originate in biology, in physical forces, in pure geometry, in color - are alike simply in that they all animate space. It is this animated space that has its functional effect upon the world, that determines the way things work, that governs the presence of harmony and life.” ——Christopher Alexander

01 WINE TOUR AND TASTING – MODERN WINERY DESIGN Advisor: Teresa Chen Site: Stellenbosch, South Africa Autumn Academic Work / Individual Work The art of winemaking and viticulture has evolved as a part of life, culture and diet since time immemorial. Nevertheless, in this long historical path, one thing remains unchanged; the association of wine with gastronomy, history, origin, local quality products and dignied social settings. Wine tasting as referred as a complete sensory experience . It's about hospitality, experience and history. A winery is an exploration of boundaries between a man-made structure and natural landscape. The tin shacks of Stellenbosch, South Africa sit at the top of hill overlooking one of the most beautiful vineyards in the world. Kayamandi or sometimes referred as container mandi, is a township founded in 1950’s as a specific non whites area for laborers who were working in surrounding farms. The area hosts hundreds of acres of vineyards but number of wineries or wine-tasting rooms are only limited. While at the same time the city centre of Stellenbosch is flourishing economically through its wine business. The stark reality of the thousands of impoverished people living just above the city centre is a woefulreminder of how majority of industries are catering to the needs of elites. Combining wineries and vineyards would attract tourist traffic and create more jobs, thereby changing the urban fabric of the area.

When it comes to wine, the first thing that comes to mind is the wedding.
Marriage of Figaro (Overture)
Jesus' first miracle was to turn water into wine at the Wedding feast in Canaan. He turned 10 waterpots of water into wine.

The unit component of the variable facade is a "pipe". The pipe consists of 3layers, the outermost layer is completely transparent, the yellow component is completely opaque, and the silver component is 50 %transparent. By rotating the internal 3 layers of the pipe, the outer wall is controlled into 6 difference different forms, which not only provide different visibility for the rooms, but also provide a variety of shapes for the building surface, like universe.

03 OPERA BY THE SEA – MODERN OPERA HOUSE DESIGN Advisor: Wei Qin Site: Tallinn, Estonia Spring Academic Work / Individual Work The popularity of the theatre plays and opera shows created a new typology of structures called “Opera Houses” across Europe. They became the cultural centre of a city housing legendary artists and performers. The operas house in Italy, Vienna, Germany, England were some of the first constructed buildings that displayed grandeur. They were often placed in the commercial district of the city. Attending an opera was a social occasion that displayed the prosperity of the upper-middle class. Opera house was identified as an iconic architectural object of their respective cities. Opera houses of Sydney, Valencia, Almaty, Beijing, etc were built subsequently in the 19th Century designed by architects Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster and Paul Andreu respectively. Designing an Opera House (cultural hub) of today that encapsulates the architectural style of the 21st Century to create an icon that lasts for decades ahead is a challenge in itself. How is the demand for cultural preservation served by architecture in modern society? The project here is to design an “Opera House” for Estonian Capital Tallinn to mark their legacy and create a cultural centre.

According to the timeline of the development of art history, the development of art is like a spiral loop. The most avant-garde art of the moment will be out of fashion and the classics of the past will be back. At the same time, art also has a core influence on architectural design. Therefore, if the design of opera house is to be enduring, it needs to draw inspiration from the classics of history.

04 PLASTIC MONUMENT - INSTALLATION ART DESIGN Advisor: Julie Zhang Site: Auckland, New Zealand Academic Work / Individual Work At the very end of the world, under the dusty wind blowing sky, men, women and children walk among the endless plastic, looking for waste they can sell for a few cents a kilogram. Dystopia? Science fiction? This is not like that. This happened along the Dhaka River in Bangladesh. This is just one of the many faces of the disaster, which has now reached too great a scale. The war against so many indestructible plastic waste is a battle that mankind is losing. However, plastic is not the enemy: it makes space travel possible, revolutionizes medicine, saves millions of lives every day, and enables the poorest people on the planet to safely access food resources. What is needed is not a world without plastics: what is needed is more conscious waste management and technical research to create sustainable alternatives to traditional polymers. Plastic Monument: Aims to create a construction device that surrounds the world and raise people's awareness of the impact of the world on plastic waste on our planet. In the fight against plastic waste, everyone can make a difference. Plastic monuments provide designers with an opportunity to raise awareness. The Plastic Monument project aims to create an object that conveys one-time cultural results to the world: the project aims to raise awareness of waste.
The environmental protection of the ocean is urgent, A lot of plastic waste is in the sea. This design wants to simulate the plastic world seen by the animals in the ocean. To call for the protection of the oceans. At the same time, in order to make full use of plastic recyclables in the design, public space is provided on the one hand and the erosion of historic sites is simulated on the other hand.To arouse public thinking about environmental protection.
