Then there’s the layout, the graphic grid, fonts, the composition, the dataflow and the meaning. To look for the meaning, it is the most complicated design exercise. This is another element to make a valid graphic. To find the rules of the composition not to make it pure trend or style. The line is thin. I understand that if graphics are well done, rooted and credible, they can have a role in the society where we live.

Koolhaas responds by embracing the movement of the lift, creating spaces that alternate between solid and void.
Rem Koolhaas became internationally popular after the release of S,M,L,XL, a book almost as big and heavy as a CMU. His firm, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), produces work that ranges through the sizes the book indicates. Easily this one family house in Floriac, within the Bordeaux region of France, could be files under S. But like the book illustrates common themes stream through the various scales of work, giving equal weight to each project. This house, completed after the release of the monograph, is one of OMA’s strongest buildings to date and illustrates these themes: innovative and creative design solutions through thorough programmatic analysis expressed against existing architectural and urban conditions. Koolhaas’s strong functionalist architecture begins from a deep conceptual knowledge of architectural history to discover what not do. This residence recalls a project presented in the postscript to S,M,L,XL, a library for Jussieu University in France. Evidently this pointed the way for things to come. Both the library and the house use the elevator for

The husband explained to him: “Contrary to what you might expect, I do not want a simple house. I want a complicated house because it will determine my world.”
the building’s reason-to-be; the former replacing the elevator with folded plates connecting the floors, the latter placing an elevator at the center of the structure, due to the client’s wheelchair-bound situation. While the library attempted to enrich the experience of circulation that the elevator removed, the house reinvigorates the experience of the elevator. To call it an elevator is necessary, though misleading. Although acting like an elevator, the moving platform opens itself up to the rest of the house, becoming part of and changing the experience of the client’s home life. It is clear that Koolhaas designed the spaces of the house around the platform, reversing the typical design process in regards to vertical transport. The house is comprised of three vertical blocks. The ground floor, adjacent to the parking ramp giving the owner easy access, contains mainly service functions (kitchen, laundry, wine cellar, etc.), each carved from the hillside in cave like spaces. The top floor contains the parent’s and children’s bedrooms in a heavy concrete mass, punctuated by random, circular openings. In-between are the living areas of the house, enclosed by glass on all sides, conceived as an internal-external space. Accessible to all three levels is the lift, furnished as a workspace, located adjacent to a full-height library. When the elevator was invented and became safe, nobody knew how it would affect life nor the buildings we live and work in. The prospects were much more optimistic than the results, but the first elevators, such as those incorporated into the Eiffel Tower. embraced the lift as a machine to enhance the experience of time and space. Over the years it became internalized, pushed into a building’s core (a very appropriate word in this instance), denying the user the experience of move-
ment within a building. Although it enabled structures to reach higher and higher, it has forever affected the way space and circulation are treated in urban designs. Koolhaas responds to this schism by embracing the movement of the lift and creating spaces that alternate between solid and void, open and closed. These differences in the treatment of each level, much more complex than mere dialectics, are apparent as one moves up and down the lift; a cinematic touch as the scenery constantly changes. Hopefully a newfound optimism will be created as the elevator is taken to its roots in this small one-family house in Floirac. A wealthy married couple with three children lived in a very old and beautiful house in Bordeaux in France. For many years this family was thinking about building a new home, planning how it could be and wondering who the architect would be. Suddenly, the husband had a car accident and almost lost his life. Now he needs a wheelchair. The old beautiful house and the medieval city of Bordeaux had now become a prison for him. The family started to think about their new house again but this time in a very different way. Circulation in the new house. The married couple bought a hill with a panoramic view over the city and approached the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas in 1994. The husband explained to him: “Contrary to what you might expect, I do not want a simple house. I want a complicated house because it will determine my world.” Instead of designing a house on one floor which would ease the movements of the wheelchair, the architect surprised them with an idea of a house on three levels, one on top of each other. The ground floor, half-carved into the hill, accommodates the kitchen and television room, and leads to a courtyard. The bedrooms of the family are on

with the aluminium floor on the middle level and creates a relaxed working space in the master bedroom on the top floor. In the same way that the wheelchair can be interpreted as an extension of the body, the elevator platform, created by the architect, is an indispensable part of the handicapped client. This offers him more possibilities of mobility than to any other member of the family- only he has access to spaces like the wine cellar or the bookshelves made of polycarbonate which span from the ground floor to the top of the house, and thus respond to the movement of the platform. Koolhaas designed a complex house in itself and surpassed the conventional, in every detail. For example, the top floor rests on three legs. One of these legs, a cylinder that includes the circular staircase of the house, is located off-centre. Although this displacement brings an instability to the house, it gains equilibrium by placing a steel beam over the house which pulls a cable in tension. This arrangement provides the middle level with an uninterrupted view over the surrounding

Panton Junior Thanks to its cheerful, bright colours and its pleasant, gentle curves the Panton Chair has always been a big hit with children – both as a seat and a toy. As such, very early on Verner Panton pursued the idea of producing a child’s version of the chair together with Vitra. The intention, which more than 35 years ago failed for economic reasons was now able to be turned into reality: The Panton Junior was produced using Panton’s original plans. Unchanged in terms of proportion and material it is circa a quarter smaller than the regular model. Available in seven different colours it is thus the ideal chair for children of kindergarten and primary school age.

the building’s reason-to-be; the former replacing the elevator with folded plates connecting the floors, the latter placing an elevator at the center of the structure, due to the client’s wheelchair-bound situation. While the library attempted to enrich the experience of circulation that the elevator removed, the house reinvigorates the experience of the elevator. To call it an elevator is necessary, though misleading. Although acting like an elevator, the moving platform opens itself up to the rest of the house, becoming part of and changing the experience of the client’s home life. It is clear that Koolhaas designed the spaces of the house around the platform, reversing the typical design process in regards to vertical transport. The house is comprised of three vertical blocks. The ground floor, adjacent to the parking ramp giving the owner easy access, contains mainly service functions (kitchen, laundry, wine cellar, etc.), each carved from the hillside in cave like spaces. The top floor contains the parent’s and children’s bedrooms in a heavy concrete mass, punctuated by random, circular openings. In-between are the living areas of the house, enclosed by glass on all sides, conceived as an internal-external space. Accessible to all three levels is the lift, furnished as a workspace, located adjacent to a full-height library. When the elevator was invented and became safe, nobody knew how it would affect life nor the buildings we live and work in. The prospects were much more optimistic than the results, but the first elevators, such as those incorporated into the Eiffel Tower. embraced the lift as a machine to enhance the experience of time and space. Over the years it became internalized, pushed into a building’s core (a very appropriate word in this instance), denying the user the experience of move-
Rem Koolhaas became internationally popular after the release of S,M,L,XL, a book almost as big and heavy as a CMU. His firm, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), produces work that ranges through the sizes the book indicates. Easily this one family house in Floriac, within the Bordeaux region of France, could be files under S. But like the book illustrates common themes stream through the various scales of work, giving equal weight to each project. This house, completed after the release of the monograph, is one of OMA’s strongest buildings to date and illustrates these themes: innovative and creative design solutions through thorough programmatic analysis expressed against existing architectural and urban conditions. Koolhaas’s strong functionalist architecture begins from a deep conceptual knowledge of architectural history to discover what not do. This residence recalls a project presented in the postscript to S,M,L,XL, a library for Jussieu University in France. Evidently this pointed the way for things to come. Both the library and the house use the elevator for

ment within a building. Although it enabled structures to reach higher and higher, it has forever affected the way space and circulation are treated in urban designs. Koolhaas responds to this schism by embracing the movement of the lift and creating spaces that alternate between solid and void, open and closed. Hopefully a newfound optimism will be created as the elevator is taken to its roots in this small one-family house in Floirac. A wealthy married couple with three children lived in a very old and beautiful house in Bordeaux in France. For many years this family was thinking about building a new home, planning how it could be and wondering who the architect would be. Suddenly, the husband had a car accident and almost lost his life. Now he needs a wheelchair. The old beautiful house and the medieval city of Bordeaux had now become a prison for him. The family started to think about their new house again but this time in a very different way. Circulation in the new house. The married couple bought a hill with a panoramic view over the city and approached the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas in 1994. The husband explained to him: “Contrary to what you might expect, I do not want a simple house. I want a complicated house because it will determine my world.” Instead of designing a house on one floor which would ease the movements of the wheelchair, the architect surprised them with an idea of a house on three levels, one on top of each other. with the aluminium floor on the middle level and creates a relaxed working space in the master bedroom on the top floor. In the same way that the wheelchair can be interpreted as an extension of the body, the elevator platform, created by the architect, is an indispensable part of the handicapped client. This offers him more possibilities of mobility than to any other member of the family- only he has access to spaces like the wine cellar or the bookshelves made of polycarbonate which span from the ground floor to the top of the house, and thus respond to the movement of the platform. Koolhaas designed a complex house in itself and surpassed the conventional, in every detail. For example, the top floor rests on three legs. One of these legs, a cylinder that includes the circular staircase of the house, is located off-centre. Although this displacement brings an instability to the house, it gains equilibrium by placing a steel beam over the house which pulls a cable in tension.
