In a time when the world was filled with doubts and no satisfaction, there was a man that brought glory and happiness to his people: King Arthur. He created his kingdom in Camelot, a place full of beauty and hope. On top of the kingdom’s hill there was his castle, that protected the city of any kind of horror and so brought security. The King had created a room in his castle, where his knights gathered around a round table. It was the most important place. The table’s shape suggested that no knight was more important that another: there was no power hierarchy.

OBA CAVE HUT

Aurora Borealis Artic Observatory Romaniavi, Finland

The project, based on the quest to find the primitive origin of architectural existence comes with the recognition of the first shelters, the cave, a natural excavated space, and the hut, the first example of architecture, being both of them basic and functional. The main concept – The Cave Hut – relies on the articulation between these two primary elements, two opposite energies, one positive and the other negative. Represented by two basic architectural operations, addition and subtraction, these two forces generate a unifying dialogue between man and nature, where the structure comprehends two moments of architectural origin and human existence. Carved in the terrain, subtracted to nature, the planetarium claims the primitive cave, transporting the visitors into a seclusion state. Raised from the ground, added to nature; the hotel, sauna, restaurant and observatory areas; elevate de user above the tree line, materializing the concept of the first hut. Stone and concrete, recreate the primitive cave and the monolithic atmosphere from the firsts times. The concrete, translucent in the windowed areas filters the light, providing a different relation with the exterior, establishing a soft atmosphere in the internal space. In the interior, the main material is wood, invoking not only the hut, but also, the local cultural influences. The “U” shaped volume embedded in the nature, resembles a primitive menhir, a stone structure that parts from the buried and excavated planetarium, and points to the sky. The volume generates a natural access courtyard, an external patio embraced by the program, while the cover of the building functions as a public observatory. This way the proposed idea follows Alvar Aalto’s approach to organic architecture, concerning the local cultures, materials and nature. The proposal begins with the creation of a discovery path, hidden in the nature, intersected with the green, leading the visitors to the monumental discovery of the built project. This progressive discovery mediates the relation between the existence of the modern city man and the mystic ancient nature.

GTL KINDLE THE GHOST TOWN Camelot visitor research center Liepaja, Latvia

The proposal was based on the city evolution, mostly about the connection between the nature and the city. We notice that the city has different characteristics and also different atmospheres: the character of a green town - the appearance very rural and countrified in some places; and the character of a town with traces of a time, not long ago, that changed and modified that place by revealing a lot of drama and poetic - the brutalist architecture. The main concept is based in those two points: the green town and the brutalist architecture. The building will function as an hybrid building with a very different kind of program that will bring life to Karosta.

* ARCHmedium student competition * co-autor with Jo達o Bilbao

The material also reflects the idea and reintegrate the building in that environment: the concrete and the brick will be used on the facade to detach the building from the residential building without disintegrate itself. The concrete is used as a result from the residential buildings and the brick is the outcome from spectacular historic monuments like St. Nicholas Orthodox Marine Cathedral near to plot area, Karosta Prison and the Horse Arena. The upper level will be covered by green as a projection and invasion of the vegetation in the ground floor. The building will mark the connection between the green, the rural, and the brutalist architecture. In the interior some places will be covered by wood or concrete as if they had invade the interior thus creating different atmospheres. It will be like a monument that represent and evokes the history of Karosta, but in other hand, the heart of the town that rises from the

ARQUITECTURA ARCHITECTURE

CIDADE PARA JOVENS Piacenza, Italy

* academic work (5th year) * orientation by Sergio Crotti

Piacenza is a typical Italian city of Roman military origin, whose center features a Roman orthogonal grid embraced by a fortified wall that protected it from possible attacks and intrusions, in the past. Nowadays, although the whole wall isn’t there, the wall marks the design of the city. The design of the historic center follows the same principles as in the other Italian cities with a Roman north-south axis, a perpendicular structure. In the old city center, there is a square that welcomes visitors and the Piacenza Duomo (Cathedral). The intervention area is no more than an empty area, waiting for its destiny, still having an empty impersonal and deracinated feeling, it is surrounded by industrial areas. It is also located in a flat area, on the edge of the historical center, near the river Po and train station, an area boarded by industrial mostly abandoned areas. The program for the City of Youth covers three types of features: student housing, the more private buildings, a Cultural and Arts Center, which makes the transition between the housing and the Forum, a building with a more public character.

The concept came from interest in prolonging the design of the ancient city wall, as a liveable wall structure, which organizes and brands the city. This solution builds on the historical wall, protects from the industrial area and unites the intervention area, next to the station, to the historical center. This liveable wall is born of a single stroke and recreates the union between the two realities that characterize this place, the old town and City of Youth. It also boosts a new center of activity, new services and new infrastructures - capable of generating new experiences and of changing the image of the whole city. Thus, a city for young people was born in the form of a wall but having a contemporary and monumental character. The monumentality is associated with the art of branding, for the visitor, the landscape, the city and the culture. Located at the start of the Masterplan, the Forum, the largest building and that feature distinguishes it from all others. Designed to be an architectural object of great impact in the city, the Forum becomes an architectural symbol that encourages the visitor to enter, here art occupies a place of worship and contemplation. The concept for the Forum came from the desire to claim the program itself as a cultural symbol for the city of Piacenza. A building that would evoke monumentality that would be able to impress and stimulate the visitor to “live and experience the new city. The idea of monumentality is present in the ratio of mankind versus space, that is scale, ratio, size or intimacy.

TRANSFORMAÇÃO URBANA I

Urban transformation I San Cristoforo, Milão

* academic work (5th year) * orientation by Marco Lucchini and Anna Moretti

The concept for the Masterplan in the Ronchetto area, by the Naviglio river in Milan’s suburbs, is based on the pre-existing framework: the abandoned Aldo Rossi building, the railway station and the link with the river. The lack of connection among these elements and the environment, as well as the lack of utilities and attractive green spaces, characterized this whole area. Thus, the potentiation of this space would come from the creation of value for the existing urban net by creating cultural and commercial areas for this “dormitory town”. The idea comes from uniting three elements (Aldo Rossi building, the San Cristóforo station and the Ronchetto area) through excavated public or private roads. The “excavated” space is a delusion created by the two different heights of the private and public green areas. A continuous relationship with the natural green is thus created, contributing to the sustainability of the place.

model of intervention’s area and conceptual idea

The excavated paths create different points of view of the place and are drawn through a hierarchy of routes (roads and footpaths) that characterize the space and have an easy reading. The public services and parking are developed at the ground floor level and the housing is developed at the higher, more private level.
