2009-10 SEASON PREVIEW
“
If this young team grows up - Watch Out! They could be the last women standing in March.”
T
he enthusiasm for the 2009-2010 season started in May. Having received commitments from possibly the deepest and most talented freshmen class in Cypress College history. The players, the staff, and I could not wait for summer workouts and tournaments to see it all come together. The summer did not disappoint. Playing split squads because of numbers, Cypress went 6-2 losing two close games in non-traditional play. In addition, the team was showing a strong commitment in their summer workouts. This strong commitment carried over to pre-season workouts. On the track, in the gym, and in the weight room – the players continually pushed out of their comfort zones and strived to improve. Everyone demonstrated qualities that would add to the team. This depth and commitment forced me into a rarity in community college basketball. I had to cut five players and redshirt two. It is never easy to make cuts or redshirt but it speaks to the how special this team. Some of the players were told in the summer they were on the bubble but they still chose to stay; which again showed evidence of their persistence and commitment. Going into this season that persistence and commitment will be necessary. As a young team with only two sophomores with college experience - a weak point will be our experience and lack of college basketball maturity. Although there is no doubting our skill level it is a big jump physically, mentally, and emotionally at this level. Soon the chargers make that jump will determine the success of their season.
Leading the way literally and figura-
tively will be Quortlyn O’Neal and Alyssa Starkey. Both are returning starters with Quortlyn returning as MVP of the conference and 1st Team All State. Their ability to lead by words and examples will definitely have an impact on how quickly the freshmen class adjusts to the Charger mentality and the play at this level. Another redshirt freshman is Tammy Campbell who suffered an ACL in Fall of last year. How well these three lead and the others follow will have a big impact on our success. The freshmen class brings diversity of talent as well as high skill level. The guards are deep. Ciarra Ford (Wilson H.S.) and Micaela Pickens (Cabrillo H.S.) are decorated players out of the Moore League. Both were All- League and should be impact players immediately. Rounding out the freshmen guards are All-CIF Lindsey Lee (Valencia H.S.), all-star Jayia Kim (Lawndale H.S.), Sepa Ete’aki all-star and allconference guard (Rancho H.S.), all-league guard Amy Gentling (Costa Mesa H.S.), all-league player Debbie Chavez (Santa Fe Springs H.S.) and all-league guard Sareen Ohanian (Ocean View H.S.). The posts share many of the accolades and promise the guards do. Leading the way, Ocean View MVP, 6’1” Rachel Sweezy and all-league 6’0” Ashley Zaragoza. Our three “tweeners,” all-league selection Lachelle Robinson (Norwalk H.S.), Karla Roacho-Cota (Cerritos H.S.) and all-league forward Kayla Pace (Warren H.S.) give the Charger coaching staff a lot different options in terms of style of play. The potential is staggering. Yet as discussed on the team building trip in Big Bear in October: “Potential means you haven’t done it yet.” The pre-season schedule is another tough one, one in which the Chargers
will be challenged to reach their potential. The Chargers open up in the strong Pasadena Tourney and one week later participate in the Merced Tournament with one of the toughest brackets in a long time. Rounding out November the Chargers meet up with cross town rivals Long Beach and Cerritos which always make for intense games. In December, the Chargers host their 26th annual tournament the first weekend. In Mid- December they face perennial power Ventura and a strong and much improved LA Trade Tech team. Rounding out December the Chargers will finish out pre-season in the usually identity-forming De Anza Tournament. Because of the State budget crisis which forced all teams to cancel four games, the ability to learn and improve each game becomes even more critical. For teams as young as the Chargers it is even more imperative to show and mature each game and each week. The Orange Empire as usual figures to be a dogfight. All teams are well coached and always play up in one of the toughest conference in the state. Every night will be a battle. The teams lucky enough to be playoff bound by the end will definitely be tried and tested in this conference. If the Chargers mature and reach their potential, they will be one of the top teams at the end. The speed at which this maturity is reached will be important in terms of RPI and conference finish. There is no doubt the talent and commitment is there for the Chargers. The Chargers overall success will lie on their ability to change, grow and improve. If this young team grows up- Watch Out! They could be the last women standing in March. 2009 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

HEAD COACH MARGARET MOHR 12th Season Long Beach State 1988
M
argaret Mohr has built a Charger legacy based on hard work, integrity, and overachievement. The 2009 Orange Empire Conference Coach of the Year, she is building a Cypress program that returns just two sophomores from an OEC championship team. In 2004-05 she led the underdog Chargers to her first State Championship. Mohr also took the college to seven consecutive post-season appearances between 2000 and 2006. In 2006, Mohr led Cypress to their first Orange Empire Conference Championship since 1988. Throughout both her playing and coaching career, Mohr has been no stranger to basketball success. Her high school playing career laid the foundation for the future, leading La Reina High of Thousand Oaks to the 1983 Southern Section Class 1A title and earning both CIF-SS and National Catholic Player of the Year honors. She was inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame on June 19, 2004. Mohr then played for legendary coach Joan Bonvicini at Long Beach State and helped lead the 49ers to a 33-3 record and a berth in the Women’s Final Four in 1987. After graduation, Mohr began her coaching career as an assistant at Long Beach State and Santa Clara before taking the head coaching job at Woodrow Wilson High in Long Beach, guiding the Lady Bruins to a pair of Moore league titles and a CIF runner-up finish. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Mohr was given the unique opportunity to be an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. At the Sparks she had the opportunity to coach such names as Lisa Leslie and Chamique Holdsclaw. Her goals for the Lady Chargers’ program remain the same: to help her players achieve academic excellence, athletic excellence and personal fulfillment. “I want the women in our program to leave Cypress College with all the tools to be successful in today’s competitive world and with two years of great memories and dreams come true” Mohr received her Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Long Beach State in 1988, and her Masters of Arts in PE from LBSU in 1996.

VIEWPOINT
Alyssa Starkey returns as a sophomore captain look- Basketball is my other half; it completes me and has brought ing to lead Cypress back to the success she experienced out the best in me. It has showed me that I can do anything as a freshman and bring out the best in herself and her I put my mind to, and it has taught me to never give up even when things are not going the way squad for this upcoming year.
B
asketball is my everything. It is what I turn to when I’m having the worst of days and it only makes my day better when I’m having the best of days. When I’m out on the court, I’m in my own world and focused on one thing: winning. Everything else doesn’t exist. Nothing comes easy when playing basketball and that is what I love about it. Everyone has to work together and do it consistently every play. If one person is out of the loop, the whole team could fall apart. We have to trust one another to back each other up when times are hard. Basketball brings the best and worst out of people. Either you are going to fight to the end, or let the other team walk all over you. Basketball teaches us traits that will be beneficial throughout our whole life. It teaches us to have commitment, teamwork, confidence, effort, respect, and pride. Basketball is like a best friend; it’s always there when times are tough, you get along some days, and other days not, and it is always going to be there for you. 8

I want them to. It’s shown me that I have a lot more in me than I ever imagined.
I could not have picked a better school to continue playing at. I came here to grow as a player and a person and the coaching staff and program have done that in so many ways. They will bring out the best in each person they coach no matter what. They will make you reach your potential in whatever way they can. Most importantly, they are preparing you for the real world and your future. They want the best for everyone and believe in each player. The coaches set the example for the players with their dedication and hard work. The coaches always believed in me even when at times, I didn’t believe in myself. I know that when I leave Cypress I will be a mature, hard-working, responsible person thanks to the coaches and the great program they built.

SEASON REVIEW
T
he 2008-09 season proved to be a comeback season for the Charger program. After failing to make the playoffs two years in a row, Cypress roared back with a conference championship and a second round playoff appearance. Cypress began the season strong taking on some tough non-conference opponents on the way to a strong 12-7 non-conference finish which included a six game win streak. The Chargers headed into an always competitive conference season and started with a challenge with an overtime win over Riverside. Cypress lost two games in the first half of conference against two tough rivals, Orange Coast and Fullerton. With a 4-2 record after the first half of conference, Cypress came roaring back with a one point defeat of Riverside followed later with an 18 point defeat of Orange Coast to avenge their earlier loss. The schedule led to a dramatic final game as second place Cypress took on first place Fullerton with the championship on the line. Cypress came out on top in the back-and-forth battle 69-65 for their first conference championship since 2006. Cypress was headed into playoff for the first time since 2006 as the 11th seed in Southern California. The Chargers first upset sixth seeded LA City in a four point victory. They headed to third seeded Antelope Valley next and were unable to overtake the Marauders just one win short of the State Championship tournament. The Chargers’ 23-10 season more than tripled their win record from the previous season. Quortlyn O’Neal was named to the First Team All-State while sophomore Sequana Norris was named to the second team. The team also excelled academically after being named a top ten academic team in 2008. Sophomore Chelsea Oldfield was named the school’s graduate of the year and was a first team Academic All-State selection.

FLASHBACK The Great Eight Chargers Take the State Championship Cypress took down Pasadena for their first State Championship. March 13th, 2005 San Diego, Calif. – The playoffs began with 36 teams vying for the top spot in the state, after the dust had settled, Cypress came out on top. The Chargers came in undermanned and undersized, but ended their season with a victory over Pasadena 69-65 to win the State Championship.
out upset. When the second half began, Pasadena came out with something to prove going on an 18-2 run to take the lead from Cypress. Just when most would concede that their dream season was over, Cypress charged back to take the lead for good and win by 4.
The Chargers were underdogs throughout most of the playoffs technically only supposed to win their first game. Cypress relished the underdog spot and were unfazed as they took out one opponent at a time through pure heart. Cypress faced off with the 29-1, 1st seed Pasadena College Sunday afternoon. The Chargers came out energized starting the game with a 10-2 run. With a 38-26 lead at halftime, it looked like the Chargers were going to pull out a blow-
The sophomores came up big for the Championship. Despite struggling through the first two games of the tournament with a broken toe, Rosalyn Omoruyi stepped up when it counted the most to be the leading scorer and rebounder of the game with 23 points and 14 rebounds. All State Tournament selection Mia Seagraves contributed some big baskets with 17 points while the Tournament MVP selection Brittany Imaku contributed 8 assists to go along with her 8
points. Long distance shooter Ruta Autele hit 2 three-pointers from the field and Paula Reed clogged up the middle on defense and grabbed 6 defensive rebounds. Reserve guard Niann Hill produced a key bucket in her limited minutes. The freshmen were not to be outdone as they showed what to look out for next year. All-state forward Ana Fakatou put up 10 points and 8 rebounds while three-sport athlete Brianna James grabbed 5 rebounds. Head coach Margaret Mohr and her Great Eight Chargers end their season with the team’s first State Championship and a record of 28-5.
