HEAD COACH BRAD PICKLER

BRAD PICKLER Head Coach 24th Season Cal State Fullerton

B

rad Pickler, one of the most respected coaches in the nation, begins his 24th season as the Chargers’ head coach. He enters the year with over 1,000 career wins. In his 23 seasons, Pickler has led Cypress to a record six State Championships, 21 straight State Tournament Elite Eight appearances, and 15 Orange Empire Conference crowns. His legacy includes directing the Chargers to a record three consecutive state crowns from 1997-1999 with a combined 177-17 mark and a school-record 27-game win streak. Pickler arrived at Cypress in 1987 taking over a depleted program and turning it around overnight with a third place finish in the Orange Empire Conference and the first of his nine conference Coach of the Year awards. He later was featured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd section after guiding the Chargers to a 66-5 record and the 1997 State Championship. Pickler owns the state record with six state championships and will be looking for more as the Chargers seek an unprecedented seventh State Championship. In addition to his six championships, the Chargers also have second (1993 and 2004), third

PICKLER FAMILY Noel Pickler – Noe again is teaching third grade at George B. Miller Elementary School. Her schedule pretty much is wake up at 5 am, take Paige to skate, then walk buzz at 6 am, get David up at 6:30, head to work at 7 am, teach till 3 pm, take David to baseball, basketball, and football practice, take Paige to sewing class, cook dinner, clean the house, walk the dog again, go to sleep, then repeat!! Unbelievable. I’m worn out just writing about it. Thanks dear, I love you. Paige Pickler – Believe it or not, Paige started high school this year. She is a freshman at Oxford Academy. She is still ice skating every morning at 5 am. Paige is also taking sewing lessons and continues to design skating outfits along with other clothing. Her quest is to cook and eat the perfect cupcake. She is quite the gourmet baker also. She struggles getting her homework done on time and keeping her room clean, but you know, nobody is perfect. Paige, you’re still the bestest daughter, I love you too. David Pickler – Davey is my main man. He is now in fifth grade at Miller School. Playing basketball with buddies Josh, Wally, and Travis and baseball are his passion. He is also very into his PS3 games and beating up on our trainer Scott Tucker on a regular basis. But I think what his greatest asset is, is how much he eats. They should start a new TV show, “Boy vs. Food” because Boy would never lose. Like always, remember, we need to stick together, Love Dad. P.S. Rebels 10-0! Buzz – Buzz is now a cool three years old. He is officially house trained because he hasn’t had an accident in six months. We’ve been working very hard on teaching him a few new tricks, so you’ll have to come to more games to see his act. He loves the “U” and is a Charger through-and-through. I think his favorite player this year is Mia, but I think he likes everyone. Buzz is a really good dog. Keep up the good work Buzz and don’t bite Arren!

2011 SEASON PREVIEW

They have worked very hard in the offseason to get themselves in the best physical shape they could to make a run at being a repeat State Champion” Head Coach Brad Pickler returns for his 24th season in 2011. He has high expectations for this year’s team and is aiming for a career third repeat title.

D

efending a state championship is never an easy task, but I think if any group of athletes are up to the challenge, the individuals we have this year just might do it. Again, like last year’s State Championship team, we will start the season with seventeen solid student athletes. They have worked very hard in the off-season to get themselves in the best physical shape they could to make a run at being a repeat state champion.

6

We have eight talented sopho-

mores, seven of which all contributed greatly last season. Our sophomores are Brianne Webster, Mia Magalona, Cristina Crissman, Nicole Nobbe, Katrina Pinkwoski, Jennifer Aanderud, and sophomore transfer from University of Toledo, Audrey Harner. These women are talented and focused on the task at hand. They want to prove to everyone that they can do it again. We have a freshman class of nine. Jessica Reichner, Monique Hernandez, Olivia Arredondo, Arren Nuñez, Natalia Morales, Heather Cosby, Brooke Hughes, Chelsea Jewett, and Shelby Dopps all have improved over the fall season and are ready, willing

Cypress College Chargers Softball

and able to contribute this upcoming season. My coaching staff is ready to take on all challenges presented to them to get them ready for another championship run. Dennis Blas, Mike Hicks, Amanda Fernandez, Frank Mendoza, and Mandy Rockwell will hopefully guide this team to a repeat title. I am excited about our team and our chances. My players and coaches are all great people and I think we can achieve greatness as a unit together. So like always, sit back, relax, have a Charger Dog, and a cold drink, and enjoy the journey!

We have put her on a crash course to learn the catching position and she is doing quite well. On offense, we need Bri to be a little more consistent in her hitting and we need her to hit those gaps occasionally. She has the power, we just need her to keep her hands high, see the ball, and hit the ball. She is another sophomore who needs to play her best for us to repeat as champions.” - Brad Pickler

arilyn will see a lot of time at first base. She has become good at digging balls in the dirt and fielding those hot smashes. Marilyn will also see time in the outfield as needed. On offense, Marilyn needs to really step it up this season. We need her to be a force every game. She has good speed, good power, and can also hit for average. “A

udrey is the only sophomore who didn’t play at Cypress last year, she played for the University of Toledo. Audrey will see most of her time in the outfield, she is a very good defender and one of the faster girls on the team. I love Audrey’s fire and determination. She has a great attitude and a love for the game. We are working daily on Audrey’s swing and if she can find a way to get on base, she could see a lot of time in the field. CHARGER 10th MAN

T

Dennis Blas

his year’s 10th Man is my good friend and coach Dennis Blas. I can’t remember if he’s ever been the 10th Man, but I’ve been here so long I don’t remember a lot of things. Dennis has been my assistant for eleven years. We have been through many interesting seasons together, including nine straight conference championships and two state championships. He has been very loyal to me and to our program and that is a quality that not everyone has. I’ve seen him go from a stocky kind of short crazy man to where he

is now (still stocky and short), but more analytical and cool under pressure. My family and his, with wife Michelle, son D.J. and daughter Lolani (who’s real name is Mayhem!) have done many things together and hopefully there will be more. Oh yeah, I must include Eddie, Jeri and Fran because they are always around and part of the

Blas tribe. Dennis has also done two awesome slap dances and I would love to see him do one more. So thanks Dennis for all your time and effort. I really appreciate it and so does our team.” - Coach Brad

The Chargers won their first thirteen straight conference games before suffering their first conference loss to Saddleback 2-1. Cypress lost an unprecedented second straight conference game the next week to Riverside after beating the Tigers twenty straight times. Cypress lost again to rival Fullerton in mid-April putting
