Black Krim

The flavour for this tomato is described as tangy, rich, and sweet. It makes beautiful dark slices.
Cut open this giant tomato to reveal golden flesh with red streaks and a rainbow of colours in between. Great for slicing.
Cherokee Purple
Black Cherry
Pineapple
Black Prince
With its rich, full flavour, it’s often compared with Brandywine. The flesh is brick-red and very attractive sliced on a plate. Good in salads and for slicing.
These perfectly round, dark fruits have a rich, sweet, dynamic flavour. Great for shish kebabs, salads, or just eating in the garden.
This is another one of those fantastically flavoured, large (often over 1 lb.), sometimes cosmetically challenged heirlooms that helped to start the heirloom craze. Pineapple is famous for its sweet, fruity, juicy, low acid flavour and its unique yellow and red mottled looks. Great for slicing.
Black prince has been described as one of the most intensely “tomatoey” flavoured heirlooms. The colour is compared to rubies at midnight. Great slicing tomato.

SAVING the Butterflies Did you know that the migrating Monarch population has dwindled to its lowest level since 1993? Reasons may include extreme weather patterns, herbicides, or loss of habitat by excessive foresting in Mexico. Another reason may be sprawling suburban areas taking up much of their natural habitat; it is important to supplement places for them to populate as well as food for them to eat. To attract butterflies it is important to plan for blooms to be available throughout the summer. Fortunately, many plants popular with butterflies have beautiful blooms and fragrance that we can all enjoy as we enjoy the company of our winged friends.

fabulous fruit The trend of growing your own edibles continues this season while having the ability to know where your food comes from and how it is grown increases in importance. Many varieties are dwarf and can be grown in an urban back yard or in a large planter singly or in combination. Try blueberries surrounded by strawberries to make your home grown smoothie!
Strawberries
Pears & Apples
Strawberries are easy to grow and easy to enjoy. Grow in rows, as a border or in hanging baskets or balcony planters. Everbearing varieties produce an abundance of sweet medium sized fruit throughout the summer. June bearing varieties tend to produce larger fruit for a shorter period of time.
These two families of fruit trees are commonly grown in Southern Ontario and for good reason. They are hardy and grow well even with our cold winters. Newer varieties have been developed to produce fruit that will store longer on a tree that grows smaller. For even the smallest space, try a multi-variety dwarf fruit tree; enjoy 3 or 4 varieties of pears or apples on the same tree.
Goji Berry
Honeyberry
Dwarf Hardy Cherry
Grown for centuries in China, the Goji Berry is now commonly associated with the term ‘super-food’. The brilliant red fruit appears mid-late summer on arching branches. This is a larger sized plant that works well as a background plant.
An extremely hardy shrub that boasts both attractive flowers and great tasting fruit. Cream flowers appear in spring on fast growing shrubs. Flat ovate, blue berries appear early summer that taste of a raspberry and a blueberry. Full of antioxidants, honeyberries can be used in place of blueberries in preserves, and pastries. A pollinator is required, but 2 in 1 selections are now available.
Dwarf varieties perfect for the small home garden or in containers. Growing to 8’ tall, these mini sized plants produce an abundance of large sweet fruit mid-late summer. Extremely winter hardy, these cherries also have fragrant spring blooms.
Stone Fruit plum, apricot, nectarine, peach So called for their hard stone like pits, stone fruits include apricots, peaches, plums and nectarines. All varieties are self fruiting which means only one is necessary to produce fruit. Even without fruit, this family of tree produces a stunning show of spring blossoms.
Growing in hot sun isn’t impossible with these sun loving, drought tolerant plants. Sunvivors is a collection of very versatile landscape plants perfect for those hard to grow areas.

Top trees for the landscape Trees are a great addition to any property. They offer shade, habitat for wildlife, and add oxygen to the air. A good tree will increase the value of a property and help improve the aesthetics of the landscape. Before choosing a tree consider the space available, mature size, shape, colour, and seasonal interest. Trees are best planted in spring so they can develop a strong root system in the fresh spring soil.
Gingko Tree A Gingko is a very tough tree that has leathery fan shaped leaves that turn a gorgeous golden colour in the fall. This slow growing, but long lived tree will be appreciated for many generations.
