TERRENCE YIK HIN, KWONG Masters of Landscape Architecture Graduate (July 2019)
BACKGROUND & ETHOS I am currently studying the Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield and scheduled to be graduated in the coming July 2019. Despite undertaking in both Masters and Undergraduate Landscape Degrees, I had a full year Work Placement at Kenneth Ng Landscape Associates Limited in Hong Kong during 2017-2018; equipped with hands-on experience in Hong Kong Landscape career field, handling ranges of residential projects as well as horticultual Expo. A passionate, energetic and highly-approachable individual with a scrupulous attention to details who aims at providing and delivering new sustainable and innovative design solutions for all members of the society. With a background in Product Design, my ethos emphasises blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor space. When designing public spaces, my focus will be encouraging interactions beyond the usual day-to-day encounters and creating a positive impact in the communities.

EXPERIMENTAL LANDSCAPE
Sonata noun
A composition for one or two instruments, typically in three or four movements in contrasted forms and keys. Site Surface Conditions
OVERVIEW To create a successful Landscape Design, Observation on site characteristics is often the key elements to success. This project is about re-designing a university forecourt. I have been asked to observe, to sketch, to experience the site; aiming to design the new landscape as an Art Form. Dozens of Cracks on the site surface immediately drawn my attention on my initial visit, I wish to produce an ‘Art Piece’ according to those Cracks. My idea is to create a Music-driven Contemplation Garden- the music will be generated based on the existing surface cracks. Focus on surface and the cracks only; ignore every objects including existing planters and seatings.

‘Sound is very visible, you have to respond, give immediate thoughts to it and be affected by it.’ - Susan Philipsz (Sound Artist)
01 My Method to create the Music from the existing Surface Cracks
Experiment on Artist Research- MATTHEW PICTON Tracing over cracks, link them up and form a giant spider-web diagram.
(Step 1) Mark out all existing cracks on site surface.
(Step 3) Draw 5-6 equal lines on top of each line pattern to create music notes.
(Step 2) Mark out general crack pattern and join them up to create lines.
(Step 4) Mix both treble clef and bass clef notes to create a SONATA.
Characteristics of the song -Compose the whole song using 2 instruments. -High tone will be performed by (Soprano) which is the highest vocal range of all voice types. -Low tone will be performed by (Bass) which is the lowest vocal range of all voice types. -The first movement is played by both Soprano and Bass together -The second movement is Soprano and Bass take turns to perform.

02 SOCIALLY RESTORATIVE URBANISM OVERVIEW In short, I am interested in finding out the overlapping relationship between the physical form and the territorial control of a space. Observe and design the site tailored to improve 6 different characters lives (Children,Working Parents, Worker on site, retired resident , temporary student and occasional site visitor.) This site locates at the centre of Sheffield; characterised as a post-industrial area; which was once a region producing steel products. Empty spaces and abandoned warehouses provide great opportunities to work with.

The aim of the project is to regenerate the area through re-designing the ‘Edges’ of the streets; looking at breaking down the existing unbroken edges into different interesting ‘micro-environment’.

02 SOCIALLY RESTORATIVE URBANISM OVERVIEW This project is all about making physical scale models as the main Design Media of the project; experimenting both indoor and outdoor spaces in relation to human social interactions. Sheffield has a rich industrial heritage of producing steel product; the main concept of my design is to bringing back the ‘Little Mesters’ i.e. the craftsman making all sorts of handmade products such as scissors, pottery and candle holder. Abandoned warehouses and courtyard will turn into a shared workshop spaces; attracting people to eat, to learn, to chat on a day to day basis; provide social interaction opportunities through facilitating a new range of facilities which was not exist in current site.

Selected Viewpoint location and direction
OVERVIEW We have asked to select a journey within 10-15 minutes walk towards the Castlegate site with clearly defined viewpoints. Starting off with a diagrammatic concept plan for the selected journey, with references on existing urban planning principle, design literature and case studies. A sequence of design proposals would then be generated for the selected 8 viewpoints, taken into account of existing built form, sequences of spaces, vegetation, watercourse etc. With consideration of existing and potential users on site, aiming to enhance the pedestrian sensory experience throughout the chosen route. A final 8 sequential eye-level 3D perspectives drawing will be produced; visually expressing the new qualities of the pedestrian experience.

04 THE RIBBON OVERVIEW The nullah moves through areas of high rise residentials, areas of retail, areas of education. ‘‘The function of spaces are designed to the function of the immediate adjacent context.’’ A linear Urban Park development- A Landscape driven approach driving the project to a way of using landscape to create social engagement opportunities, whilst improving the living and pedestrian experiences; tackling specifically to the limitation of the government proposals that it does not address any challenges nor enhance the public realm. We have a very dense city here, it’s necessary to deal with those environmental factor but also create a more Livable City; A social Engage Landscape.
Key Challenges
Social Engagement Intensity across the Nullah.
Government Proposal
The most dense residential areas; concentrated with high-rises. Tranquil, calm and relax atmosphere is what I looking for. Minimal active activities, passive seating facilities with a slow pace narrow strip of water screening off by linear structured wetland plants on both sides.
This part is designed to be the most energetic and active area. With existing football pitch on one side. Terraced seating opportunities, a multi-use area for any kinds of performance activities. Raised seating areas with water features and play equipment, high impact planting to attract users.
This part is surrounded with schools, existing park and sportsground. Ideal location for educational landscape. A best place for a Constructed Wetland. Showcasing people greywater can actually naturally filtered and treated. Details will be mentioned later on.
This part is back in dense residential. Aiming to naturalizing the channel through naturalistic planting scheme, flood plain on each sides, limited site access; allowing ‘Rewilding’ process.

05 URBAN ESCAPE PARK CONCEPT DIAGRAM
OVERVIEW This project designed to regenerate a 13 hectares of brownfield land located at the central of Nottinham City Centre and surrounded with main neighbourhood. Through looking at its history, current issue and the City Future Development Plan as a wider context, it turns out that at this particular part of Nottingham, it really lacks of significant green spaces and therefore a park will be best suit here. The dominant design concept aims to provide venues for wide range of social activities; providing reasons for visitors to stay and spend time at.

DETAILED PLANTING DESIGN
06 DETAILED DESIGN
OVERVIEW This is an International Horticultural Expo Design project. The task is to create an ‘Editable Landscape’ theme; providing a rural farming landscape scenery right here. As an Expo, the landscape must able to hold a vast amount of visitors; benches, featured seatings, viewing decks as well as lighting facilities needs to be designed and be in placed. The site layout is set out by the Clients, my task is to produce a set of detailed design drawings for tender submissions. Here are some detailed design drawings for the site.
