Welcome Dear Colleague and Friend, As demand for animal feed in the EU-27 begins to recover from the economic woes of 2009, it is clear that international trade is key to providing the estimated 470 million tonnes of feed required by European livestock, poultry and aquaculture producers at an affordable cost. But what important factors must be considered in sourcing ingredients to profitably produce high quality feed? Experts from Europe and the U.S. will explore world commodity supply and demand scenarios (including the impact of Chinese demand); the effect of the unsettled European economic and political landscape on agriculture; the nutrition and application of soy-based feed ingredients; and the potential for sustainability in the animal protein production sector. Meals The following meals are included as part of registration: cocktail reception and dinner on Tuesday in the Grand Ballroom from 6:30-9:30 pm; networking lunch on Wednesday and Thursday, served in the Grand Ballroom; boat cruise and dinner immediately following sessions on Wednesday; and coffee break refreshments during the sessions, served in the Grand Ballroom Foyer.

Welcome Reception and Dinner Get a jump on your conference networking. Attendees who arrive on Tuesday, September 13 are invited to check in early and enjoy a reception and dinner in the Grand Ballroom beginning at 6:30 pm.

Dinner Cruise on the MS Belvedere Enjoy networking time with fellow attendees and take in the sights of Berlin on a dinner cruise along the city’s waterways. Our trip along the River Spree will pass Potsdamer Platz, the Reichstag, Museum Island, Berlin Cathedral and much more. Buses will depart the hotel lobby at 5:00 pm.

Business Center The Grand Hyatt Berlin is staffed by multilingual staff and is equipped with responsive business-support services to assist guests. The hotel’s Business Center, located in the lobby on the Ground Floor of the hotel and open 24-hours, features an array of the latest technological and electronic resources, including high-speed Internet access, e-mail and fax functions, access to Microsoft Office Suite programs, and color copying services.

Smoking Policy Smoking is prohibited at all Soybean Meal Trade functions. The Grand Hyatt Berlin does not permit smoking in public areas. There is a smoking lounge next to the Vox Bar.

Speaker & Moderator Profiles

Henri-Jean Bardon graduated from Thunderbird School of International Management in 1985 with an MBA and joined the food industry with Continental Grain Company in Minneapolis. His career evolved with Pepsico, Tradigrain, and then his own entrepreunerial efforts in the far east of Russia through 2002. Mr. Bardon then established The Rice company Asian operations in Singapore and then joined the biofuels expansion in Asia with Vertical Uk Ltd and then Trafigura-Singapore. He returned to the feed business this year, joining Sodrugestvo in Kaliningrad to manage all of their procurement and Sodrugestvo commercial policy for the Kaliningrad soy crushing plant that will become with its expansion the largest in Europe.

Jannes Doppenberg is a native of the Netherlands and grew up on a farm providing a lifelong love for farming and animal husbandry. He has an M.S. degree from Wageningen University in the Netherlands with a major in Animal Nutrition and Animal Physiology and has a PhD in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health. Jannes has 25 years of experience in the international feed business. He managed a vitamin and mineral premix business in the U.S. for 15 years. Upon returning to the Netherlands Jannes joined Schothorst Feed Research an independent research organization focusing on evaluating the nutritional value of feedstuffs and feed additives for the international feed industry.

Sharon Covert and her husband, James, raise soybeans and corn on their farm near Tiskilwa, IL. They have two sons, one daughter and 10 young grandchildren. This is Sharon’s seventh year as a USB director. Sharon is also serving as the 2011 USB Secretary.

Tom Hammer became President of the National Oilseed Processors Association (NOPA) in October 2001. Hammer has nearly 35 years of involvement in the Washington agricultural and international trade policy area. He has extensive experience in both the government and private sector. Hammer received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Marietta College and earned his Masters in Business Administration from George Washington University.

Philippe de Laperouse is Managing Director of HighQuest Partner’s Global Food and Agribusiness Practice and St. Louis, Missouri office. He has more than 20 years experience in senior leadership positions with global companies in the agro-industrial and value-added food chain as well as in private equity investing. Prior to joining High Quest Partners, Mr. de Laperouse was a principal at Vanikoro Advisory LLC where he advised clients on their financial and global expansion strategies. He was also Director of Business Development for Bunge North America, Inc. Mr. de Laperouse received an M.B.A. degree from The Darden School of Business at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia and a B.A. degree from Trinity College, in Hartford, Connecticut.

Kim Aksel Kristensen has been with Maersk Line for more than 23 years. During my tenure with Maersk Line he has enjoyed living and working in India, Argentina, Honduras, USA, Venezuela, Brazil and Denmark, in a number of leadership positions developing Maersk Line’s position and offering our clients growth opportunities in global commerce. He was educated in Denmark, at A.P. Møller–Mærsk’s in-house Shipping Education, and Management training at I.M.D. in Switzerland and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in the USA.


Speaker & Moderator Profiles Bill Lapp has over 25 years of experience in analyzing and forecasting economic conditions and commodity markets. He founded Advanced Economic Solutions to provide high quality economic and commodity analysis to agri-business and food companies. Prior to starting his company, Lapp was vice president of economic research for ConAgra Foods. Mr. Lapp received a B.A. degree in math and computer science from Southern Illinois University, and a M.S. degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University.

Gonzalo G. Mateos holds a PhD in Animal Production for the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, a PhD in Veterinary Science for the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona and a PhD in Animal Science for Iowa State University. After finishing his studies Dr. Mateos worked as Product Manager of American Cyanamid Company and as Technical Manager, Chief Nutritionist, and Feed Mill Manager of Coren, SCL. In 1995, he became Assistant Professor of Animal Science at Madrid University being promoted to Professor in 2000. His major research efforts are dedicated to chick and piglet feeding, fat utilization, ingredient processing and influence of nutrition and management on meat and egg quality.

Tijssens Ruud studied Chemical Technology at the University of Eindhoven and Delft. In 1986 he started working as process technologist at Melkunie Holland. After a few years he became Manager of Biotechnology at the research laboratories of Melkunie Holland. From 1991 till 2001 Mr. Tijssens worked in several management functions in the product development laboratories of MONA, a well-known dairy indulgence brand. In 2001 Mr. Tijssens became managing director of CCL, a medium size laboratory focussing on the area of agricultural feed and food products. After the merger in 2010 Mr. Tijssens began working as director R&D and CSR at Agrifirm. Currently he is Chairman of the Steering Group Sustainable Soy from the Dutch Feed Industry Association (Nevedi).

Stefan Vogel is Head of the Economics Department of Alfred C. Toepfer International GmbH in Hamburg, Germany. His responsibilities include market research, public relations and policy analysis. He is Vice Chair of the Market Section of the German Grain Traders Association (VdG). He chairs the COCERAL Market an Agricultural Policy Section.

Dietrich Schwier is a Managing Director at Deutsche Tiernahrung Cremer Company. He finished his studies of Agra Economics at the University of GĂśttingen in 1984 and he the company Deuka Deutsche Tiernahrung GmbH in 1987 as a trainee. From 1989 to 2007, he took on various responsibilities in various apartments, including credit and legal affairs, finance, controlling, marketing and hobby and petfood, before assuming his current position.
