DEVELOPERS AND HOMEBUYERS SOUGHT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE UNDEVELOPED AREAS TO THE NORTH, EAST, AND SOUTH OF THE ELLEN WILSON DWELLING SITE THE REDEVELOPMENT OF THE VACANT ELLEN WILSON SITE PROVED NOT ONLY THAT CONDITIONS IN THE SURROUNDING RESIDENTIAL AREA COULD IMPROVE, BUT ALSO THAT LOW-INCOME PEOPLE COULD BE INTEGRATED INTO A GENTRIFYING COMMUNITY

THE ELLEN WILSON DWELLINGS COMPLEX WAS BUILT IN 1941 ON 3.5 ACRES 134 PUBLIC HOUSING UNITS IN 2 AND 3 STORY WALK UP APARTMENT BUILDINGS THE DPAH DESIGNATED THE ELLEN WILSON DWELLING FOR COMPREHENSIVE MODERNIZATION IN THE LATE 80’S AND RELOCATED THE RESIDENTS IN 1988. SINCE THE CITY COULD NOT CONVINCE THE APPROPRIATORS TO ALLOCATE THE FUNDS, THE ELLEN WILSON DWELLINGS SITE SAT VACANT FOR 8 YEARS THE VACANT SITE ATTRACTED PROSTITUTES, DRUG DEALERS, AND SQUATTERS THE ELLEN WILSON DWELLINGS WERE DEMOLISHED IN 1996

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK DESIGN COMPETITION JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, LOCATED IN TWENTYNINE PALMS, CALIFORNIA, IS A VERY POPULAR TOURIST ATTRACTION AND CAMPGROUND. THE MOST UNIQUE ATTRIBUTE THAT GROWS INSIDE IN THIS NATIONAL PARK AND AS WELL AROUND TWENTYNINE PALMS IS THE JOSHUA TREE. THIS IS A TREE THAT GROWS IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, AND FORM. WHEN DRIVING THROUGH THE NATIONAL PARK YOU MAY NOTICE VERY TALL JOSHUA TREES AND SOME THAT ARE VERY SHORT AND STUBBY. TWO MAJOR FACTORS THAT INFLUENCED MY FINAL DESIGN OF MY PROPOSED VISITORS CENTER FOR THE CAP ROCK SITE ARE SHADE AREAS AND VIEWS.
