Too good to waste: Milk
Too good to waste Milk
Helping you cut down on food waste, one ingredient at a time
Mixed into sauces, frozen into ice cream, added to tea or sipped from a glass, milk is a staple ingredient in most fridges. Own-brand Tesco milk is supplied by over 500 farms, which make up the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group, and the good news is that it’s now even more environmentally friendly: carbon emissions have been cut by 8.7% since 2016. We can all do our bit too, by wasting less milk – read on for our tips.
STORE IT RIGHT
The door is the warmest part of the fridge, so keep milk on the shelves if you can. Try to store it away from strong-smelling foods, such as chopped onions or cheese, to prevent it picking up their smells. If you struggle to get through milk before it goes off, consider switching to a filtered variety, which stays fresh for twice as long once opened.
MAKE IT GO FURTHER
Freeze milk as soon as possible once opened, and within the ‘use by’ date. Milk expands when frozen, so always leave room in the container. Defrost overnight in the fridge, shake well and use within 24 hrs. Once defrosted it’s best used in cooking, as its texture and colour changes.
