How important is interdisciplinary collaboration for developing effective building design? Well interdisciplinary collaboration which means the collaboration between design team members of architectural, structural and MEP disciplines is immensely significant for accessing and sharing crucial information related to building in question. Building Information Modeling technology is completely based on the accurate development of 3D models and their effective utilization throughout project lifecycle. For developing accurate digital models which contain all the significant information in them regarding the relevant discipline, effective rotation of crucial information is highly necessary. Models are constructed by the design development teams of a service providing company based on the specifications of architects and engineers. For example when architectural model is developed by the team members of a design development team belonging to a service providing firm they must have all the important specifications provided by the lead architect. Apart from architect’s specifications it is important for the team to have all the relevant CAD drawings with them which are developed by drafters. Both CAD drawings and architects specifications provide a base for BIM modelers to create 3D models. When it comes to developing error free and accurate models this information is not enough. Design development team members need to be clear about the design technicalities of other disciplines for the effective development of their own model. And for doing so they need to share interdisciplinary design information among each other. For sharing interdisciplinary design information they are required to link models in their project. For example if an architect wants to enrich his knowledge about structural design and then clear all his design doubts he should link structural model that is developed in Revit structure to his architectural model. Once structural model is linked to architectural model an architect can fully see the structural design and can successfully understand the positions of structural elements. As architect can see the location of each and every structural element he can then adjust his design accordingly so that his model elements do not interfere with model elements of structural model. So in this way interdisciplinary collaboration and coordination helps AEC professionals in generating immaculate design for different building disciplines.
