Scan to BIM: Get accurate information about building geometry and develop effective models A few decades earlier, it was kind of impossible to get accurate information about the geometry of an as-built building but the same thing has now become too convenient for design and construction professionals. How did it become convenient now to capture accurate geometry of an as-built building? Well, this has become possible because of laser scanning technology or due to the application of scan to BIM process in construction. Scan to BIM is a highly constructive approach that is implemented for the execution of renovation, retrofit and refurbishment projects. With the application if scan to BIM, design and construction professionals became capable in extracting building information which is then used by them for developing 3D models for the as built building. When it comes to extracting information about building geometry, AEC professionals use laser scanning technology which can do this job really quickly and accurately. By scanning the building with laser scanners building data can be extracted quickly as laser beams can travel very fast and reach out to every section of the building without any obstacle. Laser beams are capable of inserting too deep in the building and hence they can extract detailed information about building geometry in the form of point cloud data. For obtaining comprehensive information about the complete building, it should be scanned from distinct directions after which the extracted data should be combined together. Once sufficient information is obtained from the existing building point cloud data should be provided to BIM modelers so that building design can be developed in 3D by using the information that is captured in point clouds. Raw point cloud data is converted into .rcp and .rcs files by the modelers before they cloud use it into Revit. The process that is adopted for converting raw data into .rcp and .rcs files is called indexing. Hence when point cloud data is constructively indexed by modelers it can be used effectively for developing 3D models. By linking point cloud file in Revit, modelers can see all the crucial building details which help them in creating information rich and error free 3D models for architecture, structure and MEP.
