Things that need to be taken care while linking interdisciplinary files in Revit There are various things that should be taken care by Revit users when they link interdisciplinary files in Revit during design coordination. Design coordination is carried out for exchanging interdisciplinary design information by AEC professionals. For obtaining or getting familiar with design information of architectural, structural and MEP disciplines interdisciplinary design teams opt for linking models in Revit. But the process of file linking involves high technicalities and Revit users must know how to deal with them for fulfilling the purpose. When it comes to using the information of a file in Revit, it can either be imported for it can be linked. The first thing that Revit users should know about is that linking is a better option than importing when it comes to retrieving design information. If in case a file is imported in Revit, and after that changes have been made to it by the modelers, then those latest changes cannot be retrieved by the modeler in the imported file. The changes made to the original version of the imported file cannot be viewed by Revit users when they use the file in their project. On the other hand when a file is linked in the model Revit maintains a link for it which helps in retrieving the latest changes made to it. Suppose an architectural file is linked in a structural model then Revit maintains a link for it, which helps in retrieving latest changes. For example, changes have been made to original architectural model after it is linked into structural modeling Services, and then those changes can be retrieved by Revit users simply by reloading the file. But same formula cannot be applied for retrieving the changes if the file is imported. Apart from this Revit users also have to be very cautious when it comes to selecting a positioning option during file linking. Inappropriate selection of file positioning options can create a lot of complications for users in terms of placing the geometry in Revit project. Inaccurate placement of model geometry in the host model can stop Revit users from effectively viewing the elements of the linked model. Auto - Center to Center, Auto - By Shared Coordinates, and Auto - Origin to Origin etc. are some of the options which are available in Revit for the appropriate positioning of the linked geometry in the host model.
