What are different positioning options that are available for linking a file in Revit? Selection of the correct positioning option remains at the heart of file linking activity in Revit. Interdisciplinary Revit files are linked for understanding project technicalities and complications when deign is created for different building disciplines. Elements for architecture, structure and MEP are developed independently with the assistance of different Revit flavors and hence for acquiring design information file linking is considered vital. For establishing a proper relationship between a linked and a host file Revit users are required to place the file appropriately in the current project by selecting the most meaningful positioning option. Given below are some of the positioning options in Revit 

‘Auto- By Shared Coordinates’ is one of the many positioning options in Revit which is used for positioning a linked file when shared coordinates are effectively established between linked and host model. In other words until and unless shared coordinates have not been set up properly for linked and host model, linking a file with this option will not be a good idea as it can result into incorrect positioning. The basic purpose of selecting positioning options is to effectively locate objects and elements in digital environment. File positioning options have to be selected from a drop down menu. ‘Auto – Origin to Origin’ option is used by Revit users when they want to align the Project Internal Coordinate System of both linked and host models. For the effective alignment of Project Internal Coordinate System belonging to both host and linked models, it is crucial for Revit users that they establish Shared Coordinates for each model which can then be shared by optimizing tools utilized for acquiring and publishing. ‘Auto - Center to Center’ option is used by Revit modelers when they want to place the linked model at the center of current Revit project.

These are some of the positioning options that are available within the drop-down menu for Revit users when they link a file in Revit.
