A brief note on the evolution of floor plans There is a fact that everybody needs to admit that nothing defeats the floor plans from revealing the information about the building design. They are the best source of understanding or conceptualizing the building design and that is why they are excessively used by design and construction professionals in every construction project.
Over the years we have seen a drastic change in the development of floor plans and all that has happened because of the high end software that have been adopted by design and construction professionals over the years. In the beginning floor plans used to be created by architects and engineers manually on papers as no high tech software was available for them during that time. Floor plans which used to be created manually had huge chances of human errors and that is why architects and engineers used to face a lot of design related issues during actual construction.
Floor plan consist the information related to the placements of architectural elements of a floor such as placement of doors, windows, stairs, etc. They also clearly specify the location of rooms in a floor and their relationship with other rooms in that floor. In this way a clear perspective regarding building design can be gained by architects and engineers by looking at floor plans. But since manual drawings often contained human errors in them, slowly and gradually with the advancement of technology, drafting software such as AutoCAD emerged. When, AutoCAD appeared in the landscapes of Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry it made it easier for architects and engineers to develop floor plans. The 2D floor plans that are created in AutoCAD are much more accurate than the earlier floor plans which used to be created manually. Another important thing is that these floor plans can be quickly communicated to anybody due to their digital nature. In this way floor plans became effective tools for communicating building design to AEC professionals. But the growth of floor plans did not stop here, in fact they grew even more and today they are created in 3D as Well. Now day’s 3D floor plans are used tremendously in AEC industry as they help in revealing the design in a better way. Every architectural element can be clearly viewed by AEC professionals as well as clients in 3D floor plans. An indepth knowledge about a building floor can be gained through them.
