Athere re we yet? I just love the plus size category, or better yet, the plus size community! When I created Mode magazine over 15 years ago, I couldn't have imagined that Andre Leon Tally (a man I worked with for years at Vogue) would ever say, "There should be room in the fashion world for people of many sizes, and the variety of people on the runway is lacking in many respects”. I’ve been waiting for years to hear that kind of validation for fashion democracy from someone on the ‘inside’ of the fashion police. Are we there yet? No, but fullbeauty has us arriving at a whole new level of empowerment. This premiere issue of fullbeauty magazine is about having a mind and a spirit that is as captivating as a gorgeous face and body. We get so much of our inspiration from our community of women… supermodels in fashion, the new style setters of the internet, powerful role models in entertainment and, of course, women who are willing to take risks in fashion and demand options to satisfy their styles. That's why, for the first time ever, we have every runway trend in plus-size! Enjoy this issue and let us know what you think! More than ‘just a pretty face’, we want our magazine to be both a definition and a destination for the millions of women who love being the new shape in fashion.

Calling All

CUrves

The Ultimate Pin-Up Calendar

10 fullbeauty | spring 2015

swimsuitsforall is not just the name of the company, it is this company’s mission statement. Or better said, swimsuitsforall refers to its mission possible as "finding a suit you love that loves you back". History was made when s4a created a swimsuit calendar that made Sports Illustrated

feel small...literally! For the first time ever, there was a calendar with gorgeous, really gorgeous, models that every woman could identify with because they were in “real” sizes... sizes 12, 14 and 16. How did it happen and how did it make women feel? Wait until you hear what’s next!

fullbeauty | spring 2015 11

swimsuitsforall (s4a) had been making fabulous swimsuits for awhile, but when it dipped its pedicured toes into the plus size bikini market with uber-blogger Gabi Fresh, they tapped into an empowered sensibility that every woman deserves to have every swimsuit option. When they started to look at the incredible visuals, the idea for the calendar was born and the video of the calendar shoot had over half a million views within no time. Soon, the media 'noise' could be heard around the world. Over 1600 women sent in images of themselves rocking a swimsuit in hopes of being featured on the s4a site and shot at their next photo shoot. The company was blown away by the amount of love it got from customers, women everywhere and the media. Sports Illustrated themselves tweeted that they loved their version of the famous cover photo. Zooey Deschanel and Jordin Sparks both commented on social media about how much they loved the campaign - it was featured on "Access Hollywood", "The Today Show", and countless magazine, culture, and news websites.” It became a

12 fullbeauty | spring 2015

much-deserved phenomenon. Don’t just think this swimwear looks sensational. s4a sets the standard for swimsuit technology, with the most components and structural elements to ensure a guaranteed flattering fit. “We know that when it comes to shopping for plus size swimwear, finding the right style to fit your shape can be difficult. Our design technology helps you find the perfect swimsuit to highlight your favorite assets and accentuate those beautiful curves.” Simply stated: There are no body issues, just fit solutions! Do you want to enhance or minimize your bust…easy. Show off your legs…a snap. Hide your hips or tone your tummy…a cinch. It’s as simple as selecting the swimsuit that’s tailored to fit you! And guess what? If you’re still having trouble finding the swimsuit that’s right for you, you can have your own personal stylist by contacting the swimsuitsforall plus size swimwear stylists! They’ll help you find the swimsuit or cover-up that will have you looking your best and you can contact them at 1.888.241.SWIM. No more excuses, you're about to become a true beach babe!

"swimsuitsforall calendar, using gorgeous models in sizes 12, 14 and 16 was a wow that will be remembered forever” Part of the excitement surrounding the calendar shoot was the camaraderie of the models and the empowerment they brought with them. This was a ‘no apologies’ group and they came with an “It’s About Time” sensibility. Even as gorgeous, healthy size women, they all shared a lot of personal experience with it being hard to shop for swimwear, or told they weren't sexy because they weren't thin. You can actually read the interviews with each of the models featured at the shoot by going to the s4a blog. Shareefa put it perfectly when she said, “I’m so glad to be part of something that portrays a really healthy image for young girls so they can feel confident when they are growing their lumps and bumps, to know that it is normal and not everyone has to be a stick and not everyone has to be big, you can just be you." You look at these swimsuit shots and they really do emanate enthusiasm and confidence. When asked what makes her feel sexy, Gabi Fresh answered, “I feel sexy on the beach when I have a great swimsuit, when the sun is shining, when I love my hair, when I’m with my friends. I think just when I’m comfortable and happy and I know that I look great. That’s when I feel the sexiest.” With sizes 8 to 32, swimsuitsforall invites all women to come into the fashion waters. What other companies refer to as 'problems', s4a refers to as Assets. In challenging old thinking, s4a believes that all women can be Sexy at Every Curve and look sexy on the beach

no matter what her size. Proponents of the body positivity movement, they hope to empower women to feel their best in a swimsuit — because life is better in a swimsuit! After all, most of our fun and memorable times - family beach days, honeymoons, hanging with friends at the pool - are when we’re wearing a swimsuit. Yet, that has gotten juxtaposed by also being an experience for women of self-consciousness, body shame, and emotional stress. “Our campaign was an effort to close that gap. Wearing a swimsuit should be just as fun as the time you're having in it!” Is the calendar the start of a visual revolution where we get to see women of all sizes, ethnicities and style sensibilities? We think so. And so do the models who were lucky enough to be part of this extraordinary endeavor. Jada said, “I think there needs to be more publications and campaigns like the one we had those of us shooting today, and so that people can look at these things and think, 'Wow, I look like these women, and they feel confident and sexy, and they’re portraying my body shape, so I have a right to be sexy too.' Wouldn’t that feel and look fabulous!" How do you beat the most enlightening calendar in swimsuit history? The answer might be in the fact that the 2015 Sports Illustrated calendar has Robyn Lawley as one of the models…in all her glorious curves! Plus, swimsuitsforall has a jaw-dropping ad in the SI issue... just another little reminder that we have arrived from one of the companies driving us there!

Social climbing:

How do we meet, mingle, and make social media work for us? We caught up with one woman making a difference in the plus size conversation to get her take on all things social.

How Social Media is changing lives & inspiring women 16 fullbeauty | spring 2015

LALA TSHABALALA, FOUNDER OF THE BRAND & BLOG, Plus Size is ME© On your blog, you suggest 4 methods you use to help boost your self esteem and the very first one you list is media. Tell us about that. The world we live in is so influenced by social media as we spend so much time on it, so this is the perfect platform to plug into a world/industry I can relate to and that is accessible to me. The world of "plus size/curves/fuller figured women." Meaning, every day I pop onto my social media pages I'm met with images, articles, video clips etc. of plus size bloggers, models, publications for plus size women, which slowly started to remold how I define beauty. It showed me that there are women around the world whose bodies resembled mine and they are being celebrated and embraced, this was such a confidence booster.

The second way you suggest is "people" and who you surround yourself with. How would you say that translates into social media? I'm so inspired by many people I don't know personally and social media has allowed me to directly connect with them, which is amazing. Then of course there are industry people who are doing things fullbeauty is doing, so it is motivational. Surrounding yourself with people does not mean you have to have a personal relationship with them, it just means that they are in your space. How has social media helped you to spread the word about positive plus size attitudes and grow your brand? The beauty about social media is that there are so many different platforms that everyone (who has access of course) is bound to find one or two appealing to them. The decision to have all our different social media pages (Twitter, the blog, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube) is our way of reaching out to followers through a media they enjoy. Social media has helped us spread brand awareness and our "body positive/love" message not only to people in our country (South Africa) but to people around the world. It has directly connected us to people we may never get the opportunity to meet. You and your sister are in South Africa. Do you see a difference in attitude toward plus sizes throughout the world? Absolutely, in the few years we have been researching and keeping an eye on the plus size industry there has been so much growth within the industry but also such a positive shift in the way the industry is being received. Being exposed to all these beautiful editorials, runway footage, blogs etc., people’s negative ideas and stereotypes of fuller women and body image as a whole is changing.

celebs

small screen

big stars

You know how they describe great wine…if it’s young but impressive, it’s called audacious. If it’s true to itself, it’s called authentic. And when it’s just overflowing with flavor… that’s abundant. These words also describe three of the freshest and most impressive women on TV: Mindy Kaling, Cristela Alonzo and, of course, Melissa McCarthy, who never loses her edge and is cool enough not to abandon the small screen after her massive big screen successes.

18 fullbeauty | spring 2015

Mindy Kaling

It's so weird being my own role model. You know, I recommend it.

Mindy, Mindy, Mindy…

Red carpet ready with piping playing up her curves. Steal Mindy's Style with bold color in a formal gown with curve-creating details or, go for stand-out from all the little black dresses in a shorter, hot pink stunner.

totes adorbs, as she would say. From her fashion choices to her self-deprecating yet empowering sensibility, Mindy makes “The Mindy Project” a breath of fresh air in the girl gets guy, girl loses guy, girl gets different guy, romantically-challenged TV comedies. Mindy and her TV persona share a quasi-nasty yet somehow really likeable personality. The Brits might call it “snarky”, like Maggie Smith or Emma Thompson…a bit rude, a little sarcastic, but not really all that bitchy because she turns it on herself and somehow, there’s always that element of truth. When a reporter asked Mindy about her confidence, she replied, “I always get asked ‘Where do you get your confidence?’ I think people are well meaning, but it’s really insulting. Because what it means to me is, ‘You, Mindy Kaling, have all the trappings of a very marginalized person. You’re not skinny, you’re not white, you’re a woman. Why on earth would you feel like you’re worth anything?” Sadly true! Mindy represents so many different aspects of our collective angst that we can all also identify with her. Her character on “The Mindy Project” is an obstetrician/gynocologist, just like her real life mom and Mindy has called her mom “the single biggest role model in my life”. With a mom like that, it’s no surprise that little Vera Mindy Chokalingam from Cambridge MA (named Vera for the Hundu goddess and Mindy from the TV show “Mork and Mindy”) was empowered enough to go to Dartmouth, an Ivy League school in New Hampshire known far more for sculling than acting. She interned for Conan O'Brien during college and then joined the staff of "The Office" as a writer at 24, later portraying the character Kelly Kapoor. Her film debut was in the "The 40 continue to p.84

Cristela

was only 8 years old when she was sent to the principal's office because she wouldn't stop singing the theme to "The Golden Girls" TV show. With her mom working two jobs and the whole family living in an abandoned diner, TV was her American best friend and the only way she could learn English at home. Of course she became obsessed with “The Golden Girls” because, as we all know, it’s always on some channel. And like Mindy, Cristela also loved the perfect American family sitcoms and all the dads as the perfect men. She learned the power of laughter and the power in making other people laugh. Cristela Alonzo was born in 1979 to Mexican immigrant parents, and raised in San Jose, Texas by a single mother with her three siblings. After winning numerous theatre competitions during high school, she attended Webster University, but had to leave after only a year to take care of her ailing mother. She didn’t begin her career as a stand-up comedienne until she was almost 28 years old, but Cristela is nothing if not resourceful. When she couldn’t make a living at standard stand-up, she found the perfect ‘stage’ by appearing on college campuses, bringing her minority humor without the raunchy delivery of many of her fellow comics. Cristela had been saving the stories of her life, and broke through the comic clutter to appear on late night shows, "Last Comic Standing" and "Live at Gotham", among others. Like many of TV’s power player females who aren’t content waiting for the right ‘part’, Cristela created her own semiautobiographical comedy pilot just last year, and ABC made it part of the 2014–15 television season. Much of Cristela’s humor is based on stereotypes…people mistaking her for the maid, the valet, the Target worker etc. For those who think it’s not funny, you just haven’t been the ‘target’ of stereotyping. If you turned off the sound on her show, ‘Cristela’ would seem like any other family sitcom telling the story of a young woman living with her mother and her sister’s family, while trying to get through her sixth year of law school. No surprise, Cristela also lived with her mother and her sister’s family and her personal confidence had to come from within. Like so many minority comics, Cristela uses caricatures of her family members, especially her mom, but all with a wink and a smile and her phenomenally adorable laugh. She even has photos of her real-life mom as part of the decorations on the set. Besides her incredible style–the girl knows how to wear

If you don't think 'stereotyping' humor is funny, you just haven't been the target of stereotyping.

20 fullbeauty | spring 2015

color–what hooked me on the show is something that resonated with me in real life, and isn’t that what makes a great show? The first episode had this scene between Cristela and her TV mom. Cristela gets a law firm internship and her ‘mom’ says, “Part of me worries that when you are a big-deal lawyer, you will be embarrassed by me,” Without missing a beat, Cristela says “Don’t be ridiculous, I’m already embarrassed by you.” That’s the wink and a smile. My mom was a waitress and when I became a lawyer, we had a similar exchange. It’s the balance that mothers and daughters often have because we want our children to do well, but we don’t want to be left behind. Cristela pulls it off! She’s still in love with American sitcoms, and now American audiences are in love with her.

2 Steal Cristela's style by keeping it simple, even when wearing patterns. 1. Mix it up with bold color and geometric print and keep accessories simple. 2. progress to perfect transparency with nude lining in black lace dress. 3. wrap up a great performance in blue flower wrap with lots of curve appeal. 4. when it's all about the hair, lace detail brings the attention up.

Melissa

McCarthy is the girl that people just can’t say enough nice things about! Every co-star becomes a friend and every collaborator repeats the experience as often as possible. We all know her ‘small screen’ story…the adorable chef named Sookie on “Gilmore Girls”, the best bud on “Samantha Who?”, and the oh-so-lovable teacher and wife in “Mike and Molly”. But did you know that she actually appeared on television for the first time on her cousin Jenny McCarthy’s show? I thought I knew everything there was to know about Melissa…I’ve seen every episode of her TV shows since I started watching "Gilmore Girls" with my daughter, I’ve seen every one of her movies, and I hold her personally responsible for at least 20% of my so-called laugh lines! So what else didn’t I know? I didn’t know that her first roommate in NYC was Brian Atwood, the cutting edge shoe designer loved by Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. He actually asked Melissa to move in, which means that humor trumps long legs any day of the week! I knew that she started her career with the Groundlings, an improv group where she met her husband, but I didn’t know that’s also where she became friends with Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, her Bridesmaids co-stars. I knew she starred with Sandra Bullock in The Heat, but I didn’t know the two have become bffs – even trick-ortreating together. I knew she deserved at least two, but I didn’t know she’s finally getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this year. What really says volumes about Melissa and makes us love her even more is that she has stayed in her Molly role long after her extraordinary big screen career with her over-the-top breakout role in Bridesmaids and follow-up successes in the films Identity Thief, The Heat, and Tammy. And for those who think she can only do comedy, last year’s St Vincent (now on video) proved McCarthy is an absolute hit in every genre. What’s next? Besides pursuing more projects from the production company she has with her husband Ben Falcone, she will soon be filming Michelle Darnell, a comedy film about "a self-help inspiration speaker (a la Suze Orman or Oprah) who goes to jail for insider trading, and struggles to reinvent herself as America’s new sweetheart when she’s released". She has also announced The Memory of Running about a war veteran on a cross-country bike pilgrimage and Cousin Irv based on the book by Bruce Eric Kaplan. My fave upcoming projects are the all-girl Ghostbusters and Just Do It, about a wife who tries to ‘fix’ her marriage with 100 days of sex. Eat your heart out Sting!

From Gilmore Girls to female buddy films, she's the ultimate girl's girl.

22 fullbeauty | spring 2015

Steal Melissa's style in 1. Head-to-toe black with leather trim. 2. Sequins make every personality shine. 3. Elegant grey with beading. 4. Sophisticated black and white.

denise's mom royce

One doesn't have to look far to see where Denise got both her empowerment and her unique take on style. When asked to bring someone for a makeover, Denise quickly responded that her mom, Royce, is her muse. Denise’s style is “urban glam with functionality” and as she said, “I thank my mom for my keen eye to spot luxury, appreciation for all things beautiful, savvy shopping skills and hard work ethic, as well as the miracle of proper undergarments. When you look good, you feel good and ultimately you will do good!” Royce was always the ‘hip mom’, and has always been fashion savvy and stylish. The makeover was more a fun experience and fashion moment filled with mommy-daughter time. As a child, Denise always dabbled in her mom’s makeup and played with her jewelry, so this was the chance for some role reversal. In real life, Royce is more of a kitten heel woman, but at the shoot, Denise tried to up the glam factor by adding another inch or two with the shoe selections. As Denise said, “the higher the heel, the closer to GOD!" Animal print was a given, as was this season's hottest trend...the pencil denim skirt. A little out of the box styling came with a gorgeous green jacket and some very special jewelry. Those killer white jeans and chambray top that look so amazing on Denise were her mom’s suggestion, so this was definitely a question of a teacher who just can’t stop herself!

It’s All in the Fashion Details Denise feels that the real key to dressing is in the details, so she spends time ‘perfecting’ the look with fabulous jewelry, gorgeous shoes, and of course, shapewear, a woman’s best friend!

Meet Your New BFF

(Best fashion friend)

We have a new style guru at fullbeauty, the incomparable Cherie Christmas. As our Style and Fashion Expert, Cherie brings a fresh empowerment to the world of plus size style.

Q. What is the single most important attribute a woman can have? A. Easy one…confidence! It’s that defining quality that transcends looks, intellect and wealth. It comes from within, and the compliments from others are just the icing on the cake. One of my mantras is, "It's what inside that matters". Q. When are you most confident? A. I am the most confident when I wake up feeling healthy and strong. I exercise a bit, get my endorphins pumpin’ and dress up for the day. I love putting on an outfit that is pretty, tasteful and a bit sexy. I look people in the eye, smile and appreciate when someone looks back with that look that let's you know you look good. We all enjoy getting a compliment! Q. What is your personal style? A. I think my home best exemplifies my personality and my love for simple beauty. It is eclectic and was built to remind me of a spa retreat, my sanctuary from the hustle and 30 fullbeauty | spring 2015

bustle of the fashion industry. Comfortable, inviting and tranquil, everything here means something to me and every room is used and loved. It has Moroccan jouts, wood carvings from Jamaica and Africa and furniture from Italy. I’m very active and exercise every day, finding my peace in nature, so I’m inspired by everything I see and so grateful to have sight. Q. What about your fashion style? A. I dress to feel good. Pretty, confident and comfortable. I accentuate my curves and assets and have become a master of disguise at minimizing the areas that I am less confident about. I love showing my waist, cleavage, and booty and I'm a girly girl…dresses, sexy tops, pretty shoes and men! No matter what I'm doing, I match head to toe. My favorite colors are black, grey, white, and blue and I love metallics. After 25 years in the fashion business, I have hundreds of shoes and bags, yet I always look forward to buying new pieces! Q. How do you see yourself in the plus size community? A. I have always found it difficult to find clothes that fit my body and I really want to make a difference in women's lives. I am an advocate of positive body image and my vision is to share fashion tips and health advice that will encourage women to feel confident about their beauty and power. In July 2015, we will be launching my clothing collection featuring sexy, timeless essentials. It will be offered exclusively at Jessica London and fullbeauty.com.

Voice of Reason Meet your personal Trainor for self-empowerment! She’s a “Super-Betty”. Even if you didn’t grow up with Betty and Veronica, you can probably guess the urban term of calling someone a Betty. Super hot combined with super cute, inexplicably perky, and a girl who is loved by other girls (versus not-so-nice Veronica). Oh, and they are definitely blond and capable of a killer ponytail. Meghan Trainor is a Super-Betty… a Betty times ten! Unless you’ve been living under a proverbial rock, you’ve heard “All About That Bass”. And if you aren’t among the hundreds of millions who have seen the video, you’re missing what has become a phenomenon. While Meghan is dressed like Kathleen Turner in “Peggy Sue” in the song’s video, the lyrics are pure millennium empowerment. 56 fullbeauty | spring 2015

Meghan Trainor

fullbeauty | spring 2015 57

I ain't no size 2 But I can shake it, shake it like I'm supposed to do...

No apologies, Meghan’s words call out photoshopping for the kind of shopping none of us should want, and provides a puregirl version of Pharrell’s “Happy” that even boys seem to like. Is it another “I Am Woman”, a song by Helen Reddy in 1972 that became the feminist theme because it celebrated women’s lib… remember, “I am woman, hear me roar”? While “Bass” doesn’t have the aggression, it clearly has the empowerment, especially for ‘tweens and teens struggling with body image issues. Packaged in a sort of nutter fluffer approach, you know, white bread, a little salty, a little sweet, and absolutely delicious, Meghan brings a fresh approach to a complicated issue. When recently asked in a Cosmo interview about being a feminist, Meghan responded in her usual commonsense, no-nonsense way. “A feminist, like a woman-power person? I guess so, yeah. I just think women should love themselves more than they do. Because I think—with all the social media stuff—we look at ourselves too much and we just destroy ourselves when we're way cooler than we know.” While it may not obtain the iconic level of “Woman”, “All About That Bass” is making history. Number One on Billboard for 7 weeks, it tied a record set by Michael Jackson. And it was the second most-viewed video of 2014, beating out Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and other established teen music idols. While this charming and grounded 21 year old seems to have gone from obscurity to stardom overnight, Meghan has actually been writing for a decade and at only 18, she started writing for musical powerhouses like Rascal Flats. Born in Nantucket, Massachusetts to a musical family, Meghan moved to Nashville when she was only 19 and the rest is musical history. While her song may seem to be more doo-wop than country, she definitely loves her musical

58 fullbeauty | spring 2015

Yeah it's pretty clear,

home…appearing with Miranda Lambert at November’s prestigious CMA Awards and continuing to partner with superstars at December’s Jingle Ball. There are also those who view “Bass” as more about the continuation of booty power than feminism with its line “I'm bringing booty back”. Since Sir Mix-A-Lot did “Baby Got Back”, and it was made ‘wholesome’ by Rachel and Ross on “Friends” singing it to their baby, we have collectively decided that booty is best. Maybe it’s because a good booty is just so hard to fake… there aren’t any wonderbooties (like wonderbras), but give it time. Look at the music charts and there are more than a few girls ‘showing off’ the junk in their trunk. Minaj in “Anaconda”, Jessie J’s “Bang Bang”, and the booty queen herself, Jennifer Lopez’s steam team with Azalea on a remix of “Booty”. Sure, there are those who find fault with some of the lyrics or sensibility, but so did “Happy”, the other song that broke out of the angst to take us to the sunny side of life. It’s not a surprise that Pharrell and Meghan shared the stage at so many ‘Jingle Balls’ last December. So, whether it’s the bass, the booty, or just the best sing-along girl empowerment in history, “All About That Bass” has reached number 1 around the world and Meghan Trainor is here to stay. And her Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards proves it. With her second song, “Lips Are Movin” also becoming an immediate hit, and her first album, “Title”, finally getting released on January 9th, Meghan seems to be staying true to her unique style but is also adding hints of Caribbean and rap. At 21 years old, Meghan’s evolution should be really fun to watch.

Expert tips to look great day to night like a celeb

babes To find the best beauty tips for Spring 2015, look back at Fashion Week, divide by 2, and you have full beauty that can be worn by fabulous women who aren’t made up for the camera. Wait, maybe you should look back to 1987 and Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” video… the one with the dark-haired girls with bright red lips and their hair pulled back in tight little buns. Not sure if he won the Grammy because of the music or the girls, but it was fabulous. That is the top look for Spring, but there are two others that make this about being pretty. Remember, divide by 2!

60 fullbeauty | spring 2015

EMMA seeS RED Emma Stone does red with real pucker power. Maybe it comes from her philosophy on beauty…”Confidence is the only key. I know a lot of people who aren't traditionally 'beautiful' - not symmetrical or perfect-bodied or perfectskinned. But none of that matters because all that shines through is their confidence, humor and comfort with themselves. I can't think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself.”

RP Look…Robert Palmer or Red Power. Not only is red the hottest color in Spring fashion, it is the hottest beauty trend. Okay, so divide that by 2, which means hair that is sleek and smooth but not pulled back, add red or coral lips, and a softer, less-smoky eye, and you have Spring 2015. Red looks best on full lips so here’s a hint on how to puff up your pout…At the Burberry fashion show, makeup artistic consultant Wendy Rowe applied foundation over models' mouths as a base. This erased the natural tone on the lips and the lip lines, so when she layered multiple coats of red, she was able to create fuller-looking lips. For a splurge because you’re committed to the red, Burberry Lip Velvet in Military Red will have everyone standing at attention!

Pixi Lip Blush

MAC Vino Lip Pencil Burberry Lip Velvet in Military Red Revlon Super Lustrous – Crème Lipstick, Love That Red

When you’ve perfected the red lips look, go for real staying power with a dark lip stain like Pixi Lip Blush, $18, rated number 1 by the users at TotalBeauty.com. They say, “the product goes on silky smooth, and once applied there's no bleeding or fading. The pen applicator makes application easy and precise." Also try MAC Vino Lip Pencil $16, and apply in layers. Note to self: Ericka Pittman, one of the stars of “The Singles Project” and a power player at Sean Combs’ empire, said “Lead with femininity not sexuality and always, always wear red lipstick into the boardroom.”

Reese's Natural Pieces Reese Witherspoon has always said that she was the geeky girl in high school, acknowledging, “When you finally accept that you're a complete dork, your life gets easier. No sense in trying to be cool.” The reality is that she was always cool, in her distinctive way, and has gone on to incredible success as an actress, producer (“Gone Girl”), wife and mom. Her charity work also defines her, and she was recently honored for her humanitarian work.

And Look…Au Natural (or at least appearing to be oh-so-natural). The reality is that this look takes the most work because of its subtlety. Nude nails, glowing face, strong brows, it’s about looking focused on health and natural beauty. Your face always looks like you just had a hint of girlish embarrassment and your skin glows without being shiny. Reese Witherspoon looks 10 years younger than her 38 with this dewy look.

GlamGlow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment

Reverse dull, dry skin with two splurges… okay, it took me months to cave in and buy the GlamGlow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment, after I got a free sample at Sephora. For lips, the makeup artists at the Fausto Puglisi show used MAC Lip Conditioner for a soft, very natural look. Did you know that our lips lose their natural pigment as we age? This lip conditioner is a really low-maintenance lip look that brings back the pigment we’ve lost. Then, add Laura Mercier illuminating Tinted Moisturizer. It lights up your face and who doesn't love that!

MAC Lip Conditioner Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted MoisTurizer fullbeauty | spring 2015 63

Taraji's Purple Reign Taraji P. Henson is the star of the hot new show "Empire" and is clearly the star of the 'purple reign'. She's also a lady on a mission and is working closely with the Global Shea Alliance to insure that the 16 million African women who harvest shea nuts can enjoy economic empowerment through their trade. "So many people go to Africa and take, take, take. It's very rare when someone comes in to give to the people," Taraji, whose maternal ancestors are from Cameroon, said.

PC Look…Forget the ‘correct’ part of pc and think “Plum Crazy”! This look has to do with vivid plum lips, vivid plum nails and vivid plum eyes…maybe all together. Not for the meek, this is a real fashionista look that definitely should be divided by 2 for mainstream wear. Taraji P. Henson does it perfectly and very sexy, despite her feeling that, "l Feel Most Sexy When I Have No Makeup On". For the perfect purple lips, you need to start with soft lips because dry, cracked lips will look more noticeable with bold colors. For a splurge, makeup artist Gucci Westman at Oscar de la Renta prepped models' lips with Hourglass No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil ($42). Purple Pucker Power—For just a bit of berry, go with either of 2 colors from the Revlon Super Lustrous Collection, 660 Berry Hot or 27 Violet Frenzy, both under $10. Don’t be afraid of how intense they look, they go on much more sheer. For more color, try Maybelline 905 Brazen Berry and for all the way impact, Revlon Colorburst Matte 215 Shameless is not for the meek. Purple for your Peepers–Maybelline ExpertWear Eyeshadow in Tuscan Lavender ($2.99) is a real steal, with just a hint of glitter. I’m a huge fan of Urban Decay and their multiple color palettes will make you feel like a makeup matisse.

Christina Hendricks

The 'girls' who star in "Mad Men"!

Some fun facts: Frederick of "Frederick's of Hollywood" invented the first padded bra in 1947 and the first push-up bra a year later. Frederick also created the first front hook bra and the thong. Wow, that guy was really into lingerie!

66 fullbeauty | spring 2015

Okay, this is creepy. The first sports bra was invented in the 70’s out of two jock straps!

Bra sizes continue to increase. From 1990 - 2000, the average size went from a 34B to a 36C. Today, it’s a 36DD and G, H & J cups are not uncommon.

Driving

men Mad

The average woman owns 9 bras and only wears two of them, and most women will change bra size six times over their lifetime, but will keep wearing the old, way too small bras for way too long. Just how important is the right bra? Ask Christina Hendricks, the star of Mad Men, who gladly shares the spotlight with the ‘girls’ and has proven that she says the most when she says

nothing at all. Even when not in character, she is as known for her perky and very voluptuous breasts as she is for her stunning looks and incredible acting talent…which you will see in Mad Men’s final 7 episodes this spring. Since Howard Hughes had the first underwire push-up bra designed for Jane Russell, Hollywood has recognized the value of a good bra!

Bra Fitting101 (In China, you can actually major in this!)

Start up the Band. Did you know the bra band is 80% to 90% of the support of the bra? It should be snug so it will not ride up, but you should be able to slide two fingers between the band and your skin to allow comfort. strap yourself in. Straps are responsible for only 10% to 20% of the bra support, but probably account for the most pain when band and cup sizes are wrong. your cup should not runneth over. No matter what style bra (even a pushup), your breasts should fit inside the cup with no spillage over top or sides. The gore is the part of the band that is between the breasts and it should fit close to your chest.

get wired. Wires are not the enemy…bad-fitting bras are.

Underwires should surround your breasts and never dig into breasts, chest or underarms.

look at those girls. Your nipples should be halfway between your shoulders and elbows, facing forward – check out Christina. That definitely takes adjustment! A great fitting bra is like a great guy – you should feel secure and supported.

Oprah made history when she revealed that 85% of women are actually wearing the wrong size bra. Are You Wearing the Wrong Size? Do your straps dig in your shoulders or constantly slide down? Does your bra band ride up in the back? Does the underwire or sidewire dig in? Do you ‘bubble’ at top or sides? Do you have uniboob (no separation)? Do you ‘droop’ even with a bra?

Even one of these problems means something is wrong with the fit.

Robyn LawlEy on her new cookbook

Meet Robyn Lawley, an Australian model (correction, supermodel) from Sydney, Australia. Robyn started modeling straight sizes at only 16, but soon realized that she just couldn’t believe in the necessity of staying skinny. Instead, she signed with a "plus size" modeling agency in Australia when she was 18, and the rest is fashion history. She is a major presence on the international magazine scene, having been on the covers of Vogue Italia, Elle France and the Australian editions of Vogue, GQ, and Cosmo, and has broken through the size barrier with designers Ralph Lauren and H&M, among others. Near and dear to our hearts, Robyn also walked the runway in a one-model show for OneStopPlus for Fashion Week, streamed onto a New York Times Square moving billboard. expert, and designer of fabulous swimwear but, as a self-confessed foodie, perhaps she is most passionate about cooking. The success of Robyn’s food blog, "Robyn Lawley Eats" led to her receiving a contract to publish a cookbook with original recipes, family recipes and tips on eating at restaurants around the world. As her book “Robyn Lawley Eats” is subtitled, she enjoys “Decadent Dishes for Friends and Family”. Robyn's love of cooking and sharing food started very early in life and, like so many other chefs, Robyn’s fondest memories are helping her grandmother and mother prepare the family's favorite dishes. Robyn now lives in Brooklyn, New York, the new foodie mecca of the Northeast. She travels the globe for her modeling and the world of food for her friends. Her book brings together a collection of modern classics and delicious photography from her travels, as well as home-grown Aussie dishes from her upbringing in Sydney. The good news is that there are recipes for every occasion and for every level of cooking. It’s about having fun with food and friends! Her recipes have been featured online and on television in both Australia and the U.S. and she has signed a contract to host her own TV cooking show which is scheduled to air on ABC in 2015.

Quiche Lorraine PREPARATION TIME: 45 MINUTES COOKING TIME: 1 HOUR SERVES: 6–8 Crust: 2 cups plain flour 150g salted butter, cubed 1 egg 2 tsp crème fraîche (or sour cream) Filling: 3 bacon rashers, chopped 11/2 cups crème fraîche (or cream) 5 eggs 1/4 tsp each pepper and paprika 150g gruyère (or vintage cheddar), grated 120g diced ham 1. To make the crust, sift the flour into a bowl. Add the butter and use your finger tips to rub it into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Create a well in the centre of the flour and break the egg into it. Slowly mix with a fork. 2. After the egg is combined, add the crème fraîche, making sure to keep mixing until it forms a dough. Knead the dough for 1 minute then wrap in cling wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes (chilling prevents pastry shrinkage). 3. Preheat the oven to 170°C and grease a 28cm loose-bottomed tart tin. Allow the dough to soften a little then roll it out and line the prepared tin. Cover the pastry with a sheet of baking paper and fill with pie weights or uncooked rice. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove the paper and weights and cook a further 8–10 minutes, until the pastry is dry and lightly golden. Set aside to cool. 4. For the filling, preheat the oven to 180°C. Cook the bacon in a frying pan until lightly browned. 5. Combine the crème fraîche, eggs, pepper, paprika and 3 tablespoons of the gruyère. Pour into the pastry shell, then add the diced ham and bacon. 6. Sprinkle the remaining gruyère evenly over the top and bake for 35 minutes, or until set and golden brown. This can be made a day ahead and reheated.

Berry pavlova PREPARATION TIME: 30 MINUTES COOKING TIME: 1 HOUR + COOLING SERVES: 8

8 egg whites 2 cups caster sugar, sifted 1 tbsp cornflour 2 tsp white vinegar Topping: 300ml thickened cream 1 tbsp icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 250g strawberries, hulled and sliced 150g raspberries 150g blueberries 1. Preheat the oven to 150°C and line a large baking tray with baking paper (a round pizza tray is ideal). 2. Before mixing, wipe all bowls and utensils with white vinegar as any trace of grease will prevent the egg whites beating up to a good volume. 3. Using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Add the caster sugar, cornflour and vinegar gradually and beat for another 3–5 minutes, or until you can no longer feel the grains of sugar between your fingers. 4. Spoon the mixture onto the prepared tray. Using a knife or spatula, shape into a circle at your preferred height (as this doesn’t rise). Leave a little room around the edge as it will spread slightly. 5. Bake for 1 hour (if too much browning occurs on top just carefully place some foil lightly over). When done, switch off the oven and open the oven door slightly. Leave the pavlova in the oven to cool. 6. For the topping, use an electric mixer to beat the cream, icing sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form. Place pavlova on a serving plate and top with the cream mixture and berries. NOTE: To make a berry sauce, heat the berries with some sugar in a saucepan until slightly thickened, then cool and use to top pavlova.

Watermelon and rocket salad PREPARATION TIME: 15 MINUTES SERVES: 2 1 medium red onion, halved and finely sliced 80g feta or goat’s cheese, crumbled 1/4 watermelon, cut into chunks 100g baby rocket leaves (2–3 handfuls) 1 tbsp pine nuts Dressing: 1 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp white vinegar 3 tsp lemon juice 3 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp mayonnaise, plus an extra tsp to thicken, if desired

Food is the New Fashion and Robyn is a supermodel at both

1. Combine all the salad ingredients in a bowl or on a platter. 2. To make the dressing, combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk until smooth (or throw into a sealed jar and shake). 3. Just before serving, drizzle salad with dressing and toss to combine.

From the She Wolf Bakery in her adopted home in Brooklyn, NY and in Union Square, NY, Robyn has featured this scrumptuous breakfast in her blog. Avocado, ham, vintage cheddar, sourdough, paprika and garlic aioli make this dish more about construction than cooking, great for family breakfasts or an intimate brunch for two. Lots of voices and one vision at last summer's Dress for Success Summit in DC.

In conversation with Joi Gordon of

Dress For We recently had the pleasure of meeting with Joi Gordon, the CEO and Worldwide Director of Dress For Success. A successful career woman, mother, thoughtful leader, and believer in supporting people, Joi talks about her journey, her vision for Dress For Success, the women it empowers, and the companies that help make her vision come true.

Success

How did the concept of Dress For Success come into being, and how did you get involved in it?

Do you think women in "power suits" have brought about a sea of change of how they are perceived in the workplace?

Eighteen years ago Dress For Success was founded in New York City and I saw it on the news. The call-to-action was to get women to donate their suits. So, getting up that morning and putting on my suit to go to work as a lawyer, I completely got it. I knew the power of the suit! My intent that morning was to just call to donate clothing, but then the founder asked me to join the Board of Directors and I was honored to be invited. Fast forward to a year later, I was headover-heels in love with this organization, its mission, its purpose and its true meaning, and left what I was doing and started working at the basement of the church on west 4th street, their New York office at the time. Within 3 years of doing that, the founder decided to step down, and write the second chapter in her life, which allowed me to write that second chapter in mine. I have been leading the worldwide organization for 13 years now and, honestly, had I not been listening to the news that morning, I probably wouldn’t have stumbled upon what has become my journey.

Absolutely. Quite frankly, when we started wearing the “power suit” at the work place, we were trying to be the female version of the male. For many women, especially for our women, suit equals success. When you wear a suit, you feel differently and you stand tall. Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, people judge you based on how you look. “When you look polished and professional in a suit or a dress and a great pair of heels, people have a perception of you, and it is real.” So we want to make sure we give that to the women we serve who are at a slight disadvantage to other women. What is the biggest gap that Dress For Success addresses for women to get into and stay in the workplace? The gap that we address is the catch-22 -- how do you get the suit if you don’t have the job, and how do you get the job if you don’t have the suit. So the suit for her at Dress For Success helps her with her self-confidence and, in many cases, helps her with her self esteem. fullbeauty | spring 2015 73

We too can feel stylish, sexy and beautiful, and size does not matter anymore. FullBeauty Brands and Dress For Success have been working together over the years, fulfilling your ongoing needs for sizes 12 & up. We are very excited about our recent long term partnership and commitment to help you & your team continue to empower women in the workplace. What does this partnership mean to Dress For Success?

The finishing touch to any great outfit is always confidence.

For most women who come to Dress For Success, they have never owned a suit. Imagine putting on a suit and seeing this person in the mirror you have never seen before. How that’s going to make you look and feel. Here at Dress For Success, we are providing her with a tool that she gets to use to help her get into the workplace. For women, how you look is how you feel. We want to make sure she feels strong, confident, and powerful. She feels successful, and that’s how she walks into her interview. Whether it is dressing for an event or for an interview, tastefully made clothing goes a long way in boosting a woman's selfconfidence. Your thoughts? Oh absolutely, we believe in that. We do a lot of events with our women, whether it is giving them a suit for the interview or a beautiful cocktail dress to come out for a Dress For Success event, dressing up is a very powerful thing for a woman. “When you look your best, you feel your best, and you put your best self forward.” For her, being selfconfident is critical to finding and keeping employment. Even after 74 fullbeauty | spring 2015

she gets the job, her clothing and how she looks at work still matters. She is going to be taken seriously and people will consider her for the next job. Like the saying goes, dress for the job you want, not for the job you have. The symbol of the suit at Dress For Success is success, and we want to give that to every woman who walks through that door. Isn't this especially true with curvy women who get stuck with the clichés of body types and fashion rules? Do you think this is one of the hindrances women face on a daily basis whether it is dressing for work or otherwise? Yes, we put a lot of obstacles in our own way. Sometimes, if your issue has to do with body image or weight or size, that can hinder you in your ability to move forward. The beauty is that now clothing for women 12 & up is just as fashionable as for their thinner counterparts. We shouldn’t let that be a barrier anymore; style is style no matter what size. Being a woman who is size 12 myself, we have a lot of styles to choose from. “Companies like FullBeauty are great for women sizes 12 & up, because we can find clothing that is flattering on the outside and make us feel confident on the inside.”

Odd thing is America has gotten larger and more and more women fall within the size range of 12 & up, but that does not reflect itself in our donors. Since our donors tend be under size 12. FullBeauty Brands has always helped fill this reality gap at Dress For Success. Now that we are in this strategic partnership, for the first time, we will be able to ensure that every woman that walks through the door will be given clothing that fits. It is sad for any of us who work on the shop floor with these women, when a woman size 6 or 8 walks in and she has racks of clothes to choose from, and a woman size 22, 24, 26 walks in, and she has just 2 pieces of clothing in her size. FullBeauty helps us treat every woman with dignity and respect and give her something in her size that is professional and polished. The good news is that the combined efforts of the plus size blogging community, retailers and celebrities have helped women to embrace their curves and feel confident. Do you think this helps the woman who walks into Dress For Success to already feel better about herself than say 10 years ago? Absolutely, with the new breed of plus size women who are blogging and companies like FullBeauty Brands who roll out this beautiful magazine catering to the lifestyle needs of a plus size woman, it is definitely breaking down barriers of body image, size & weight. The perceptions are changing; think about it, none of us ever get caught up with shoe sizes, so why dress sizes? There are so many fabulous curvy women out there who are not only beautiful, they are also very successful, and when you look at magazines like fullbeauty Magazine, you see women just like yourself, who are doing these extraordinary things in their lives. This definitely helps you build your self-confidence and self-worth.

Close Encounters Fun, Food and Fabulous Sights!

Spring is the perfect time for getaways. Driving is a pleasure and airfares are lower than holidays or summer. Our three favorite destinations are D.C, New Orleans and San Francisco, so enjoy the food, fabulous history and festival fun. 76 fullbeauty | spring 2015

Where to Visit: 6 Places 1. French Quarter, antiques and unique architecture. 2. St. Charles Line, oldest streetcar in the world. 3. Cemeteries in Nola are called "Cities of the Dead" and St. Louis Cemetery is the most famous. 4. Riverwalk is on the Mississippi. Try a cooking class at New Orleans School of Cooking. 5. National WWII Museum is ranked #1 attraction, with a 4D theatre and submarine simulator. 6. Musicians' Village was built after Katrina.

4NEW ORLEANS As the street sign indicates, New Orleans ("Nola" to friends) is at the ‘corner’ of French and American tradition. From its architecture (most historic districts in the U.S.) to its slightly scary sensibility (voodoo and cemeteries), Nola's still the only place in America with incredible food, extraordinary music, and a festival almost every week. With spring temps in the 70’s, it just doesn’t get any better than ‘The Big Easy”.

Where to Eat: 6 "Plates" 1. Café du Monde, best beignets since 1862. 2. Camellia Grill, crispy-edged pecan waffles or fluffy omelets (eggs whipped in milkshake frother). 3. Donald Link's Cochon (French for ‘pig’) is a splurge, but go next door to Cochon Butcher for bacon melt (buckboard bacon and collard greens). 4. Fried chicken, go to Dunbar’s where celebs and politicians, ‘chew the fat’. 5. RioMar Restaurant, try zarzuela, a tomato-saffron-laden seafood stew, char-grilled oysters or mussels with spicy Spanish chorizo. 6. ‘Best bites buy’, happy hour at Marisol. Try sautéed duck livers in almond sauce, date-stuffed, bacon-wrapped chorizo, or fresh mussels.

4SAN FRANCISCO SF is really a quirky city. Only one tenth the size of New York City, it's known as America’s best restaurant city and is the backdrop for more major movies and tv shows than any other city. It's the hills, winding streets, fog, bridges, cable cars and neighborhoods, changing from chic to grunge in a block and from Haight to haute in half that. It combines the past and the future in an eccentric and eclectic use of architecture and is literally bursting at the seams thanks to the dot.coms.

Where to Visit: 6 Places 1. Golden Gate Bridge is the world’s most famous bridge...and easy to walk across. 2. "The Rock" is Alcatraz prison. Tours are appealingly scary! 3. Fisherman’s Wharf for food and shops, including crab vendors. Watch for sea lions living at the pier. 4. Chinatown is 24 blocks of shops, restaurants, temples and museums. 5. North Beach is the Italian quarter. See Church of Saints Peter and Paul and Coit Tower. 6. California Academy of Sciences is the world’s only aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum, and 4-story rainforest, all under one roof.

Where to EAT: 6 "Plates" 1. HRD Coffee Shop, its Mongolian Beef Cheesesteak Sandwich is worth the long lines. 2. Rosamunde Sausage Grill for hot dog fans. Try knockwurst, andouille, lamb or wild boar sausages. 3. Soma Street Food Park is why SF is the star in the street food world. 4. J & A is the real deal in Chinatown. 5. relationshipS

sizzle

in the relationship"stake"

Has some of the infatuation in your relationship been replaced by more mundane emotions? Want to add a little sizzle to your emotional ‘stake’? We went to the experts to find out what could go wrong, how to fix it, and how to make the good even better. Believe it or not, there’s actually a “Love Lab”, located at Seattle University and directed by Dr. John Gottman, the author of lots of books on marital stability and relationship analysis. This guy has studied thousands of couples for decades and by analyzing those eye rolls (c’mon, we all do them), shrugs, and ‘whatevers’, he can predict with 94 percent accuracy whether a relationship will last for the long run. Four traits are apparently the most reliable predictors of damaging a relationship, so if we can make some changes, we can increase the odds of keeping our relationships and enjoying them more. By the way, while Dr. Gottman studied couples, these ‘predictors’ work for all the relationships in our lives, including parents, siblings, children and friends.

4

deadly traits

1. Criticism can go from cute little nitpicking all the way to the dreaded ‘never’ or ‘always’. “Oh, you’re wearing that cute sweatshirt with the holes in it" (wink, wink). “You always keep me waiting” (no wink). 2. Contempt takes criticism a step further because it goes from a behavior to a fundamental personality attack…”you’re so stupid to think that”, “you’re so selfish". 3. Defensiveness is usually the response to criticism, which escalates a discussion

80 fullbeauty | spring 2015

into an argument. He says ‘you’re always late’ and you answer, ‘well, if I didn’t have to do everything around here, I could be on time’! 4. Stonewalling is much more a guy thing. Characterized by “do whatever you want”, “leave me alone”, or “I’ve had it”, it’s just clamming up and refusing to talk about things. The worst part…men think it feels natural.

Do these traits sound a little familiar? More than a little? No worries, they can be turned around quicker than a smart car on a wide street. First, hear what your partner is saying and respond with validation rather than defense. For example, “You haven’t been helping much with the dishes.” Don’t respond with, “you never walk the dog”. Instead, acknowledge and apologize. Repeat after me, acknowledge and apologize. That opens the conversation to a discussion instead of a fight. The toughest thing for most women is the stonewalling. First, pick the right time for the discussion. Stonewalling is less likely after a glass of wine at dinner than it is when either of you walks in from work. Guys are problem solvers, so position it as looking for help with a solution. A good option is saying something as if you read it somewhere. It takes some of the blame off you and gives a little credibility. Last, the ratio of good to bad stuff said in an argument should be 5 to 1…wow, that is a lot of work!

Now for the

fun stuff!

Here are some ways to make each other feel appreciated and raise the romantic temperature from lukewarm to sizzle. New Activities. Great couples generally engage in new activities together — like taking a cooking, wine tasting or beer making class. It should be new for both of you and have some common interest. Small Gifts. Give small gifts on ordinary days. For example, your husband helped your child accomplish something, give him a treat. Appreciation. Everyone needs to feel appreciated so say something nice every day. After a couple of days, the shocked look on his face will become a contented grin, and you may just get a compliment in return. Chore Duty. Choose one of the chores your spouse normally does but definitely doesn’t enjoy, and do that chore for them. Private Time. Arrange some couple-time away from home and the children. An overnight stay in a motel does wonders to refresh a marriage, physically and emotionally. Brag. This is an easy one. Instead of complaining about the other to friends or family, tell others how much you love and appreciate your spouse. Not only will it sound really good, you start to believe it and if your spouse hears it, you’re really appreciated in return. Fantasize. We’re all allowed to do it. Back in the day, women read romance novels. With no time, we can replace reading with some imaginative thinking. Role Play. On the TV show “Friends” Ross shared a fantasy about Princess Leila from Star Wars and Rachel dressed up like her. Role Playing is fun because it becomes more about laughing. A Great Bed. When was the last time you gave your bed a mini-facelift? Be brave and go for a little animal attraction, like Brylane Home 300- TC Leopard Sheet Set (Item #: 1581-52762-1163). Sexy Lingerie. Never underestimate the value of sexy underwear and lingerie. The Lace-bodice babydoll by Amoureuse® (Item #: 0015-41290-1078) comes with a matching panty, is a perfect length, and really lifts “the girls”. Make sure to choose his favorite color! Feeling brave? Just go to fullbeauty.com, choose ultra sexy lingerie, and get ready!

1. Dog slurping your face to go out. 2. Radio set to ‘romantic light’ music. 3. Hideously loud alarm, snooze, even louder alarm. 4. A slight nudge from the guy next to you.

It’s the start of a workday. You never leave the house without:

1. Gloss or lipstick -- it brightens me up. 2. Mascara and liner…your eyes get lost without it. 3. My entire "face" done. I could run into my ex on the street! 4. I still have some makeup on from last night, so I’m good.

answers If you answered mostly 1’s, you’re ‘Sporty’ Sexy

You’re into sports, whether as a participant or observer. Maybe you’re in the fantasy football league or watch your daughter’s soccer, or play tennis once a week. There’s a certain sexiness in that… think tomboy and how cute and flirtatious that can be. Guys love the unexpected! Wear boyfriend jeans with a tight Henley shirt (unbuttoned) and you will play up your most fun assets. Try some sexy underwear under those jeans…you’ll feel differently and it will show. Think Cameron Diaz or Jennifer Garner.

If you answered mostly 2’s, you’re ‘girl next door’ Sexy Sweet on the surface, you might also have a bit of a mischievous side, and that playfulness is always sexy for the guy who gets to know the real you. And being ‘real’ is a big part of your appeal, so don’t hide under too-sexy clothes or makeup because you think it will make you sexier. You have it without all the layering. Dress soft and cozy, and keep it fitted to your fabulous body. Think Jennifer Aniston or Katie Holmes.

what's your

Sexy

Style?

If you answered mostly 3’s, you’re ‘classic’ Sexy You just look, well, classy. A little bit ‘above-it-all', you have a relaxed style that always looks great. Girls will envy you and guys will want you to ‘let your hair down’ because they can tell still waters run deep. Keep it simple and sophisticated, and the little black dress with a sweetheart neckline and high heels were made for you. Think Blake Lively or Nicole Kidman.

If you answered mostly 4’s, you’re simply ‘super’ Sexy Seriously, you could go out of the house in sweats and a pony and you would still look like the one boys fantasize about. Play it down a bit so you don’t scare off the good guys, but still can attract the bad boys if that’s what you want. Girls will still be ridiculously jealous, but maybe not quite as much if you don’t flaunt your natural magnetism. Think Scarletts – O’Hara or Johansson.

Year Old Virgin” with Steve Carell, and the show she conceived, writes and stars in, “The Mindy Project”, launched in 2012. How we know she’s really made it? Time magazine named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World…that’s the World, not just TV! And she has just starred in a Superbowl commercial with Matt Damon (which is pure Hollywood irony because Mindy’s first claim to fame came when she wrote and starred in the acclaimed play “Matt and Ben” about you know who)!!! Most fun is an incredible Pixar film coming out in June with Amy Poehler about the ‘voices’ in your head and Mindy’s voice (because hers is so immediately recognizable) is that of “disgust” – but in a cute way, of course. Speaking of cute, Mindy has this quirky way of dressing on both TV and in real life. Lots and lots of colors, often all at once, and patterns on patterns. She gets really anoyed when people call her courageous and brave because she “does not subscribe to the ideals of beauty”. Let’s get this straight…she does subscribe to the ideals of beauty and she absolutely believes she is well within the beauty parameters. As she has said, “It’s so weird being my own role model. You know, I recommend it.” Want more Mindy? See below for my favorite Mindy-isms on men, weight, and thinking out loud.

Mindy-isms: This is a girl who gets girls! Seriously, she says what all of us wish we thought of saying. Mindy on…

Thinking out Loud: “What I’ve noticed is that almost no one who was a big star in high school is also a big star later in life. For us overlooked kids, it’s so wonderfully fair.” “If I’m going to be a mess, I might as well be a hot mess”. “Sometimes you just have to put on lip gloss and pretend to be psyched.”

“I fell asleep watching a movie and when I woke up, I had spilled so much red wine on myself that for a second, I thought I’d been shot.” “In my mind, the sexiest thing in the world is the feeling that you’re wanted.” “I simply regard romantic comedies as a subgenre of sci-fi, in which the world created therein has different rules than my regular human world.”

“I know I’m depressed when there ceases to be a difference between my awake clothes and my asleep clothes.” “The chorus of “Jack and Diane” is: Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone. Are you kidding me? The thrill of living was high school? Come on, Mr. Cougar Mellencamp. Get a life.”

Weight a Minute: “It’s a small point of pride that I was a sixpound baby, because from my limited understanding of baby weights, that’s on the skinnier side. I flaunt my low baby weight the way really obese people flaunt their dainty, small feet. It’s my sole claim to skinny fame.”

“I’mnotnot overweight.I flucI “I’m overweight. tuate between chubby and fluctuate between chubby curvy”. and curvy.” “Chubby people can never truly pull off ethereal the same way skinny people can never be jolly.”

Lucky girl

“Ultimately, the main reasons why I will be chubby for life are (1) I have virtually no hobbies except dieting. I can’t speak any nonEnglish languages, knit, ski, scrapbook, or cook. I have no pets. I don’t know how to do drugs. So if I ever lost weight I would also lose my only hobby; (2) I have no discipline; I’m like if Private Benjamin had never toughened up but, in fact, got worse; (3) Guys I’ve dated have been into me the way I am; and (4) I’m pretty happy with the way I look, so long as I don’t break a beach chair.”“If someone called me chubby, it would no longer be something that kept me up late at night. Being called fat is not like being called stupid or unfunny, which is the worst thing you could ever say to me. Do I sometimes look at Gisele Bundchen and wonder how awesome life would be if I never had to wear Spanx? Duh, of course. That’s kind of the point of Gisele Bundchen. And maybe I will, once or twice, for a very short period of time. But on the list of things I want to do in my lifetime, that’s not near the top. I mean, it’s not near the bottom either. I’d say it’s right above “Learn to drive a vespa,” but several notches below “film a chase scene for a movie.”

Boy, I Want a Man:

“I have the best job in the world because I get to kiss handsome actors and then they leave – I’m a human trafficker of handsome men!” (On differences between men and boys) “Men know what they want. Men make concrete plans. Men own alarm clocks. Men sleep on a mattress that isn’t on the floor. Men tip generously. Men buy new shampoo instead of adding water to a nearly empty bottle of shampoo. Men go in for a kiss without giving you some long preamble about how they’re thinking of kissing you."

Color Scope

You may not realize it, but the colors we wear talk for us. Whether it's a first date or anniversary dinner, job interview or an invitation to the in-laws, how do you want to be perceived? Want to wear black, then just colorize your accessories. Caring Green means health and wealth. It is also the color of spring renewal and growth. If you want to seem like you took a cab instead of the bus, but gave someone a ride, green does it all. Destined for success with a social conscience...powerful combo. Ohm! Light purple is spiritual and will have others perceiving you as thoughtful and compassionate. You'll seem like a good listener even if you're doing all the talking. Energy Bright red is a stimulant, and really improves both the reality and perception of confidence because you feel more confident just wearing it. Don't like red but want the power...red heels. Who doesn't feel the power of red heels! Focus Yellow enhances known intelligence and mental agility, so it can help stimulate conversation and clarify thoughts...why do you think pencils and post-its are yellow!

When it's bold blue, you're guaranteed a bright future.

Love Big surprise, pink is the color of love. Really good in a time of transition because it calms and makes you feel taken care of, even if you're the one doing the caring. Oh, did we mention sexy and sweet -- yup!

Smart You're funny and flirtatious, but when you want to be taken seriously, wear deep blue. It makes you look organized and efficient, thoughtful and analytical... perfect for an interview or promotion.

Happiness We all want to be perceived as happy...I love this job even though I've sent my resume to 50 companies. Love my boyfriend but Tinder is just fun! Yellow and orange make us seem bright, happy, optimistic. Yay!

Calm Light blue gives a sense of peace, dissolving tension and promoting tranquility. Wearing it helps calm aggressive tendencies and eliminates discord, perfect when dealing with a negative in-law or sibling.

Passion Be careful, deep red wakes up the libido and lessens inhibitions. You'll feel invigorated and so will everyone around you, so save for a date or an evening out with either your guy or your girlfriends, or captivate the room when making a presentation.
