If using a mover: contact moving companies for cost and time estimates

If moving yourself: contact truck rental companies for cost estimate, millage / time allowed and insurance details

Create a floor plan sketch of new home for furniture placement (I can help you with this.)

Sell or donate unneeded pieces

Make a home inventory of major items and items with potential moving issues

Begin to remove clutter starting with the basement, attic and garage and out-buildings

Start a file of moving paperwork, records and expenses, may be used for possible tax credits and claims

Start coordinating getting your new home ready. Contact painters, carpenters, plumbers, roofers, etc. (I will gladly provide you with lists of qualified local companies.)

Banking: prepare to transfer financial and safety deposit box contents to new branch, or contact new banks for prospective new financial relationship(s)

Documents: be sure all personal, family and financial records are accounted for, including:

Birth certificates, passports, insurance, medical, dental, legal and academic records

Choose a moving or truck company and reserve your needed dates

If using a mover: confirm schedule with moving company

If moving yourself: reserve moving truck, ask friends to help or hire / reserve a moving team

Obtain and fill out post office change of address cards or do on-line. Use mail forwarding

File change of address with Federal Government (IRS, State Agencies, Revenue Canada)

Make arrangements for temporary storage if necessary

Get antiques and / or valuables appraised as necessary. Obtain rider insurance as needed

Order / obtain moving materials: boxes / containers, bubble wrap, packing tape markers and other supplies

Start To Pack: starting with off-season clothing, sports gear, holiday items and other items not in immediate use

Notify family and friends of new address and move date

Schedule utility disconnections of all utility services at existing residence

Schedule utility connections for utility services at new residence

Utilities: gas, electricity (www.fpl.com) , water (in person at Palm Coast City Offices with proof of purchase, signed HUD statement)

Notice Of Change Address: banks, credit cards, magazines, employer, clubs, associations

Contact insurance company for moving coverage and transfer policy to new home

Reserve Elevators For Move: apartments / condos. See if moving permits are required

Hold second moving sale

Donate to charity (yes, you still have too much stuff)

Arrange for carpet and drapery cleaning, needed repairs to items remaining in current residence

Properly dispose of items that cannot be moved (paints, cleaners, propane, flammables)

Recycle electronics, plastics, metals, paper, etc.

Prepare vehicle and driver licensing and registrations (if moving out of state or Canada)

Children: toys, medication, snacks, books, clothing

Kitchen: every-day dishes, utensils, food

Personal: bedding, clothing, toiletries, medication, bandages

Pack A Suitcase: have items on hand in case movers are delayed en route with belongings

Settle any outstanding obligations

If Using A Mover: let movers pack your belongings

If Moving Yourself: dismantle beds and large furniture. Continue packing items

Defrost refrigerator and freezer

Drain power equipment of oil and fuel

Drain water hoses and coil

Tape remote controls to electronics or pack in box and clearly label Label any special power / connection cords

Disconnect and prepare major appliances for move

Secure microwave turn-table and other appliance components

Set aside items to travel with you (travel kit) to prevent it from being packed

Pack a boxs / containers with items that you will need first at new home. Mark “load last” on box(s)

Confirm arrival time of moving van or truck

Confirm hotel accommodations

For Kids And Pets: drop off kids and pets at pre-arranged care sites

Make note of all utility meter readings (photograph reading faces with smart phone for pictorial record)

Confirm bill of lading and inventory prior to signing approval

Keep forms in safe place

Do final walk-through / clean-up of old home

Leave paper towels, toilet paper and good karma

If Using Mover: be sure someone is at old house to answer any questions following your departure

If Moving Yourself: be sure helping friends and family have lunch / dinner / etc.

Breath ...moving is stressful but can be an adventure and positive experience with positive attitude

Be at your new home to answer any questions from the movers or unloading team

Position someone near the primary enter door to direct placement locations for large furniture / appliances

Check boxes, furniture and appliances for damage (photograph if possible for record)

Pay moving van and / or moving team if applicable

If Using A Mover: be prepared to pay mover. Have cash on hand to tip if appropriate

Install new batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, garage door opener(s)

Consider having locks re-keyed. (I can provide you with a list of qualified locksmiths)

Register to vote (at Flagler County Services Center, Rt. 100, west of I-95)

Start new newspaper subscription

Contact New Affiliations: places of worship, clubs, associations

If gated community, obtain home owners’ ID, register vehicles with community and obtain gate opener(s)
