01 Student Success Center

Lamar State College - Orange, TX

Lamar State College - Orange wanted to create a “one-stop-shop” for all student related services in their recently aquired hundred year old church. Located at the entrance point to the campus, the Student Success Center would provide financial aid, counseling, course registration, and other student services in a beautiful and welcoming building. I created, developed and presented two massing schemes to the college for the renovation and new addition (provided on the following pages). I also headed all historic documentation and consultant coordination.

I explored two schematic design options for the addition to the historic church. Both exemplify the NPS standard of highlighting additions with their own distinct identity. Option 1 delved into the idea of the porch and the role in plays in community building. Through shared proportions, the historic front porch is mirrored by the contemporary back porch.

Option 1

Option 2 offered a very contemporary approach with an exploration of interacting volumes. The intention of this scheme was to touch the historic church as lightly as possible. The new addition inserted into the church as a bridge between the new and the old. In both schemes, accessibility and MEP required the delicate coordination with NPS.

02 Orchestra Room Addition

Lamar Consolidated High School, TX

The 2020 Lamar Consolidated ISD bond included an orchestra room for Lamar Consolidated High School, the oldest high school in the district. The new addition provides the school with an orchestra space as well as practice rooms, instrument storage, and an office. I started this project at the Concept Design phase and have lead the team as Project Architect all the way through Construction Administration to the completed project pictured below.

New Construction Progress Photo Pilaster Photo

As Project Architect, I developed the construction drawings for the Orchestra Room. Moreover, I led the consultant coordination from design through construction. Complex details arose at the connection points between the historic buidling and the new addition. I both drew many of the details and saw them built in the field leading to high quality CA services. Details on these pages have been edited for legibility.

03 Columns

New Orleans, LA

The Columns Hotel is a long-beloved local destination on St. Charles Ave. and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the last remaining Thomas Sully mansions. The first floor is a bar and restaurant open to the public. The second and third floors are hotel rooms. The project included all new interior finishes, reconfiguring the historic bar area, adding a coffee shop, and updating the hotel rooms. I completed and received approval for the historic tax credit application as well as providing all architectural drawings for the project.

Since antiquity, erasure has been used by conquering civilizations to instill fear in the local population and redefine the identity of a place. My masters thesis explores an allegorical way to preserve a place prior to destruction. I imagined a replica city built above the original city. People move vertically between the spaces of daily life into the spaces of collective memory and ritual. By preventing the erasure of cultural heritage while maintaining the intrinsic connection between a place and its people, we preserve authenticity.

I created the Cubberley GIS mapping component within the larger project, which centered around designing a shared community center owned jointly by the City of Palo Alto and the United Palo Alto School District. The GIS maps were used for community engagement activities, the Cubberley Master plan, and internally for understanding the context, desires, needs, and gaps in the community.
