Dear Ed. Texas Boating Rocks. I have been onboard from day one and seen you guys grow from the start. I boat often on my home lake, Lake Whitney, and my son is an avid wakeboarder. He has improved from season to season and now wants me to get a new boat because he says the wake needs to be bigger. Do you have some cost effective tips that you could give me so I don’t have to shell out for a new boat. I have tried concrete bags in the rear and it seems to make it bigger but the wake starts to crumble. Any cheap alternatives or tips you can give me. BOBBY L. via e-mail Dear Bobby, Our staff wakeboarder extraordinaire as put pen to paper and wrote his thesis on the fluid dynamics of weighting your boat. Well maybe not that intense but he does cover the basics quite well. PRP

To the Editor: It is well into the boating season and I want to get some issues of my chest that have been tearing at me this boating season. On the top of my list is boat ramp courtesy. It seems like it no longer exists. I have a pretty good patience but when a pontoon boat full of people takes fifteen minutes to launch, it frustrated me somewhat. Get your boat ready for launch before you back into the ramp! I saw a jetski launch his ski, beach it and move his truck from the boat ramp before the pontoon even backed up all the way. I know that launching a boat takes some time to learn and execute properly but fifteen minutescome on. Next would be no wake zones. They are there for a reason. Usually so people can launch their boat without having to battle with rough seas. Despite the obvious buoys people still blow by pulling little Billy on his tube. Ultra frustrating. But what can you so except try to educate so thus the inspiration for this letter. I am normally a civil and easygoing man but igno-
rance frustrates me so I hope you print this so I could affect the mind of one boater. Other than that I am just casting off my little fishing boat in search for the big one. Love the magazine, keep up the good work. WAYNE V. via e-mail Dear Wayne, I feel your pain brother. It gets crazy at the ramps sometimes and there are plenty of stupid people out there- just drive on a major roadway in morning rush hour. I think you have it right thoughEducation is the key. So take Wayne’s tip and help out a boat who might be taking a while or spread the word of the unwritten laws of boat ramp courtesy. A small gesture or quick word could spark the light bulb in a fellow boater. Just watch which gesture you use. PRP

Old-world charm and the latest toys come together at Lake Conroe

bout an hour north of Houston up I-45, in an area sprawling with new development yet still surrounded by natural habitat, lies a South Texas lake that’s a melting pot for boaters. A body of water known for its fun, recreational boating that’s set in an area recognized for its historical significance, it’s no wonder that Lake Conroe gives you the best of both worlds – past and present. Local boaters and out-of-town vacationers alike come to the Lake Conroe area for the variety of activities the area and lake have to offer. The surrounding community is a history lesson and a hot-spot all in one.
CLASSIC CHARM The county of Montgomery, in which the lake is located, is known as the official birthplace of Texas’ Lone Star flag. It’s also a place sporting growth, progress and commercial appeal, with businesses and attractions popping up all around, mainly in the city of Conroe.

The same diverse experience is true about the lake. Visitors can choose to be swept away on a trip back in time by taking a ride on an authentic paddlewheeler riverboat. They authentic features of a 19th Century riverboat. Solid oak carved molding, chandeliers, and an antique-style bar make the Southern Empress reminiscent of the Victorian era. “It has that old-world charm,” said Debbie Berra, general manager for Southern Empress Cruises. “The dining area has a lot of wood finish and there are velvety-back chairs. “It’s just unique here. There’s nothing like it,” she said. “This boat was built for this lake. It’s a real icon and people come out just to ride the boat.” When Berra says the Empress was built for Lake Conroe, she’s being literal. Constructed in Mississippi in 1983, the ship was cut into sections and transported to the lake on 27 semi-truck loads. The reassembling took place at the lake, where the boat has resided ever since.
Each level of the ship serves a special function. The top deck is open, allowing passengers to enjoy the view of the lake, and also contains the pilot house where the captain controls the boat. The bottom two levels are enclosed and climate controlled. The second deck contains a dance floor, bar and bandstand for parties, while the main deck contains the Empress Room, an elegant dining area, with adjoining space that can serve as a casino or wedding chapel. Berra said weddings are
very popular on the boat, which makes for a memorable alternative location for a ceremony. “The brides like it because it’s a smaller wedding,” she said. “We’ve had several get engaged out on the top deck. It’s very romantic. A lot of people celebrate their anniversaries here as well.” Berra said the riverboat’s most popular time is in the spring and summer, as well as Christmas and New Year’s Eve, when business is booked. The Empress is deco-

rated during the Christmas holidays, as well as the Fourth of July, as patrons ride the boat and watch fireworks over the lake.
START YOUR ENGINES While cruising the lake with historical perspective appeals to some, others come to Lake Conroe to show off the latest model in recreational watercraft. Yachts, motorboats and jet skis of various shapes and sizes are found zooming through the lake, with activities such as water skiing, tubing and occasionally parasailing being enjoyed among the waters. Boaters with personal watercraft might enjoy revving it up themselves, but some like watching the skillful handling demonstrated by pros in water sport competition. That opportunity exists as well, thanks to the return of powerboat competition to the Lake Conroe area. After a long absence, the American Power Boat Association (APBA) brought the sport back this year, hosting a Region 5 Watercross Racing event in Conroe in May. The closed course event, held at a motocross park close to Lake Conroe, was the second stop on a tour and could signal more events to come for an area that loves its watercraft. “Locality is one major factor,” said “Flyin’” Bryan Smith, an APBA racer and national champion that is also a promoter and course marshal for the organization. “The city and the merchants have to be behind it as well. … It’s an excellent location with all the things to do out there. “I think we’re going to get people out there that might not be interested in racing, but want to see what people that have their particular model can do when racing watercraft,” he said.
Revamping the organization, the APBA has its Region 5 Watercross racers back in the Lake Conroe area to compete on high-powered personal watercraft. Pros from Region 5, which includes Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico, want to rebuild the reputation that earned them the nickname ‘Powerhouse of the South.’
“It’s always been known as Houston’s playground,” Berra said. “Everybody from that area comes up here to have a good time.”
The racers expect to put on a show for the area and also expect to garner strong support from spectators, Smith said. “Back in the late 1990s, they used to have races out there at the lake, a supercourse endurance race,” he said. “It kind of faded away around 1997. … People have been asking if we were going to bring the event back to the area. “It had been long enough, we decided it was time to come back,” he said. “We might have more racing there in the future; we’ll see how it goes.”
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The variety of activities on the lake – from the adrenaline rush of operating a boat or watching pros race at speeds up to 80 mph on the water, to the relaxing and enchanting experience of taking a riverboat ride – has made the Lake Conroe area a haven for boat enthusiasts that want to get away for some fun. “It’s always been known as Houston’s playground,” Berra said. “Everybody from that area comes up here to have a good time.” Continued on pg. 10 TexasBoating.com

Arial view of the 12th, 13th and 14th holes of Walden Golf Course on the water of Lake Conroe. Don’t slice it.
But the popularity isn’t confined just to people hailing from the South Texas metropolis, Hafner said. Visitors and tourists from other parts of the state, as well as other parts of the nation, make Lake Conroe and its surrounding communities a popular vacation spot. “We’ve recently received more requests about the lake and the area than ever before,” she said. “This area is growing so much and there are so many activities to take part in. It’s growing as the city grows, but it’s also a draw for people who want to come out to tour the natural areas.” Just like the contrast in old-fashioned appeal and cutting-edge watercraft found on the lake, the sights and attractions nearby are varied as well. New restaurants, stores, resorts and condos are popping up around the lake, while others are receiving makeovers. The Del Lago Resort is undergoing renovation and will open as the La Torretta Del Lago in October, complete with hotel, restaurant, spa and even a lazy river on which patrons can relax.

Nearby golf course Walden – named a top-five course in Texas by Golf Digest magazine – as well as April Sound and Texas National, offer visitors a chance to play on some quality greens. In the town of Conroe, the Creighton Theatre has been recognized as a top theater outside the Houston area, bringing in big-name musicians and housing a symphony, while another downtown theater is in the works as well. Meanwhile, those that want to commune with nature don’t have to travel far. The lake touches up to Sam Houston National Forest to the east and Huntsville State Park to the north. Both properties offer chances to spot wildlife, hike and camp, while the lake offers excellent fishing opportunities as well.

by joey arcisz Have you always wanted to get monster wakes from your boat like the pros? There are several different methods and tools when is comes to weighting a boat properly. It is best to understand the physics of the wake to help better understand weighting a boat properly. The wake is the result of a mass traveling over water displacing it depending on the shape of the hull. The goal is to equally weight the boat as to “sink” it evenly. Note: Texas Boating Magazine does not recommend putting in more weight then specified by the manufacturer.
WRONG WAY TO WEIGHT A BOAT
Excess weight anywhere but the center of the boat will cause issues when it comes to the shape of the wake. The stress on the boat for one and also the way the boat drives and takes turns. If the boat is weighted to heavily in the bow or stern and you need to make a quick tight turn before running into shore, you might experience what is called chine lock. Chine lock is when a boat locks up in a turn and the drivers cannot steer out of it. This is usually due excess weight in the bow or stern of the boat and usually occurs only in older model boats.
CORRECT WAY TO WEIGHT A BOAT
To get the perfect wake shape from your boat (the way the engineers intended). You have to lower the entire boat deeper into the water on a level plane, not in sections. Unless you forgot to put the plugs in before pulling away from the loading ramp, you should be able to place a level in the center of your boat on the floorboard and see that your boat floats dead level in the water. This goes the same for weighting your boat to produce that massive wake you desire for your wakeboarding needs.

WEIGHTING OPTIONS
-fat sacs -ballast tanks -lead/sandbags -wedge/wakeplate
BEST AND WORST LOCATIONS FOR WEIGHT
Storage spaces and the floor are the safest locations. That is if you don’t have ballast tanks. If you bought your boat with any ballast options than most likely the rear storage will have the ballast tanks located below the floorboard. Placing minimal weight in these locations is acceptable, but I do not recommend putting 500lbs. sacs on tope of them. Busting a ballast tank is not something you want to risk. If you own a direct drive I also do not recommend placing huge fat sacs on the sides of the engine compartments(depending on how wide the beam of your boat is). If there is room for sacs go for it, but if theres not, don’t risk warping or breaking the engine box just to get a huge wake.

IS THERE SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH WEIGHT?
The answer is YES, of coarse you can put too much weight in your boat. That’s kind of a dumb question, but it happens a lot more than one would think. I myself am guilty of extremely too much weight, I have three blown acl’s too prove it. Im not trying to tell everyone not to have a huge wake, I’m just explaining weighting all together. I’m giving tips on how to get the biggest wake without being to big, but most important, I’m giving tips on how to create the smartest wake possible for your boat and your riding. First off, the most obvious way to know your putting too much weight is if your boat takes half the lake to plain off or worse not at all. Second, if your fortunate enough to have purchased your boat with the larger engine option, and you have a prop that’s pitch is strictly designed for low-end torque. This still applies to you. Yes, you might be able to put 10 fat sacs in your boat, 10 people, and still be able to get right on plane, but don’t go boasting that you have the most massive wake on the lake. I Know for a fact that if your loading 5-6000lbs. of weight into your boat and still getting on plane your not going have a clean wake. It will roll over and create a lot of white wash and the only way to clean the wake up is to drive at least 27mph, that is unless you like burning a full tank of gas in one set. In all seriousness though, the most important thing to think about before over weighting a boat is the potential for injury and poor riding habits. Trust me, never good ever comes from overweighting a boat. Continued on pg. 14

V-DRIVE vs. DIRECT DRIVE
In my opinion direct drive boats come in second to v-drives when it comes the ideal wake boat. The main misconception about weighting a v-drive though, is the amount of weight to place in the rear of the boat. Most people will weight the stern heavily and this most likely will cause the boat to porpoise. Which means the boat constantly bounces up and down like its hitting big cabin cruiser rollers one after the other after getting on plane, even if the lake is smooth as glass. If you have too much weight in the stern you will porpoise, and gaining speed will only make it worse. Other than that, V-drives I believe have more options when it comes to where you place the weight and handles turns better when weighted down than a direct drive. Neither boat is better than the other as far as wake shape goes, the only difference I believe is in the way they drive and how they’re correctly weighted.
LEFT: A 500 lb. fat sack is being pumped full of water and placed in the center of the boat as to keep the weight centered. A key feature is that the sac can be easily moved for minute adjustments. ABOVE: Every boat has manufacturer weight requirements. TBM recommends to never weight more than specified.
BEAM
V-DEPTH V-SHAPE
BEAMS & HULL/ V-DEPTH & V-SHAPE
Boats with wider beams are easier to weight because you do not have to be as precise with side-to-side weighting. I recommend you still use my level theory on the side-to-side aspect. When you set the level on the floorboard make sure that you turn it in both directions to make sure your boat is floating at zero degrees in both directs left-to-right (starboard-to-port) and front to back (bow-to-stern). Boats with skinnier beams will take more precise weighting to get the boat level. The width between the wakes will also be skinnier than a boat with a wider beam. The v-depth of the hull will also effect the shape and size of the wake. Also will the v-shape. The flatter the hull, the longer the ramp of the wake will be. A boat with a deep v-shaped hull will produce a steeper and shorter ramp. The width of the beam will also affect different wake shapes. Finally the length of the boat factors in to the shape as well.

SPEED vs. WEIGHT
SUM IT UP
Getting the biggest wakes from your boat is a science. Just think evenly distributed weight and level floorboard. The goal is not to sink your boat. Cheers!
Leveling the Playingfield Proper weight distribution is the key when weighting for larger wake
No Weight
Evenly Distributed
Incorrect - Too Much in Bow
Incorrect - Too Much in Stern
MKT-2578-A APR 2008
Speed is another thing to consider after you find your preferred weighting situation. The speed in which you pull a wakeboarder or wakeskater will affect the softness or stiffness of the wakes ramp. This is totally personal preference, but some things to consider are; steeper wake shapes are usually pulled at a slower average speed vs. a wake with a longer ramp because stiff steep wakes will more likely cause the rider to trip on the wake or stab through because the speed in which the rider comes into the wake the actual bend or rocker in the board do not match up. This aggravates most beginners when trying to progress to bigger and more difficult tricks because they do not understand what is happening. They think they are not good enough, when most don’t even realize it could be the wake. A wake with a longer ramp will also cause progression issues. For tricks that require more height than distance, a long ramp will frustrate riders that wish to learn certain spins and inverts. I can tell by the way a person performs different tricks or the way they in which they ride, what type of wake shape they primarily ride on. This is one of my first concerns when a person comes to me for instruction.

More boats, more people (44,000+) and more deals made the Texas International Boat Show in April the biggest in Texas. 27,000 visitors on Saturday alone, were treated to 500 boats onshore and in the water - many available for demonstration. A rail jam featuring top US wakeboarders staged by Texas Ski Ranch and Mastercraft, live music from the Bahamas and Jamaica, fashion shows, exotic and classic cars, custom chopper bikes, plus a whole lot more, made the event truly four days of fun in the sun.
Above: Editor of Texas Boating Darron Williams, Mayor of Corpis Christi Henry Garrett and Marina Association of Texas President Marcel Bosworth
Boat dealers and vendors were kept happy as buying started from the get-go as the show was ceremoniously opened by Henry Garrett the Mayor of Corpus Christi and Al Jones, President and CEO of American Bank, the presenting sponsor of the Texas International Boat Show. Boat sales were even better than the previous year with companies selling boats across a wide range of prices as high as $4 million. Also, watch out for the organizers next show, the South West International Boat Show, later this year in Houston at the Kemah Boardwalk Marina, October 2nd -5th, certain to be a sure fired success coming close on the heels of the Corpus Christi event. thirdcoastphoto.com

TRAVEL checklist by Mike CURRIE
Travel with Style
Planning to Travel in 2008! Need some ideas? Here’s one - start thinking about it Yesterday! This not a news flash! Texans are last minute travel shoppers. We plan our day, our kids week, our clubs monthly calendar, but planning a trip with or without kids, is a major event. OK, how should we start? Reading travel columns in helpful magazines is a start. It can jump start your planning process by brainstorming what’s out there. Find out what’s hot, what’s not (you may not have tried it yet, and now it’s a value) and what is the best time to do it. Here are some of my thoughts for the coming year:
What’s Hot in 2008!
• The Mediterranean – specifically Barcelona to Venice, just starting to get popular are Turkey, Croatia and even Northern Egypt • Anything Disney! Theme parks are reinventing themselves and the impeccable Disney cleanliness, organization, and innovated fun for all ages is very consistent. • River Cruising – from Amsterdam to the Black Sea, the Rivers and locks connect 8 countries and you can find a tour that includes your “must see” cities. The allure is the convenience of walking off the ship directly into a quaint village or fabulous palace with a local-based guided tour. • Alaska, by land or sea. Better yet a combination cruise tour. Excellent for the extended family, from Grandparents to young ones and all in between. Educational and pristine lands without human development. It is still a hot vacation and the way the glaciers are melting and “calving” you take it in while you still can. • RV travel is not new, but is the most popular modern day camping event fro the family. The rental of these large vehicles is exceptionally reasonable, but the cost of fuel is an offset. Look for National Parks that are out of the main flow of Summer tourists, like Glacier National Park in Montana or Utah’s Arches National or Monument Valley.
When to book? Sooner than better is the key for rooms in preferred locations or adjoining cabins. Balconies, triples and quad cabins go first, followed by the large suites. Here are three of the most commonly asked questions at our travel store: 1) Question: When is the latest I can book and still get something decent? Answer: Again sooner is better, but here’s my guide: Spring Break (March 16 – 30) Absolutely no later than the 2nd half of January or be ready to pay a premium) Alaska 2008 – 6 months lead time unless you are not particular about cabin or cruise line. Prices don’t rise much as you get close but sell outs do. Europe 2008 – Have this on booked by the end of March for a Summer itinerary. The shoulder months or May – 1st half of June and October are the best values with smaller crowds 2) Question: When will the fares drop for cruises or flights? Answer: For the last two years, I can tell you that they won’t and will not in the near future. Today’s airlines and cruise lines’ yield management departments are so well staffed and sophisticated that they update daily to leverage demand very well. ( If it’s the deal that excites you when booking travel, then you are best suited for on-line travel auctions. Have fun, but leave yourself some time and patients to get this done!) 3) Question: Can’t I just buy a cruise on-line? Answer: Sure, you can. Go to the cruise lines’ website or a search engine provider, just like you would book an airline ticket. But be careful. The difference is that with an airline commodity purchase, you simply want to go from Point A to Point B. The service you receive (unfortunately) is about the same today on most of the major carriers. Your choice comes down to - price, price, price. It’s not the same for cruises. There are four or five differing levels of cruise products (mass-market, premium, deluxe, luxury and niche) and each can be the right choice to fit your specific objectives. You may also want to consider pre/post trip overnight stays, shore excursions, travel interruption insurance, airport to ship transfers, and even choice of airlines, to get you to the dock on-time. Cruise Specialists are basically match-makers that are compensated by commissions from cruise companies providing the services. ?” Going it alone can prove to be quite risky. Think about it. Write me at dreammaker@cruiseholidays.com and I will be happy to send you my complimentary copy of the The 10 Myths About Cruising. - Mike Currie, owner, Cruise Holidays of Southlake

OFFSHORE ANGLER by CAPTAIN CARL
9 Offshore Fishing Tips Some tips to get you the fish when offshore in the Gulf of Mexico Tip #1
When using live shrimp for bait, try using larger than normal hooks such as #3 Treble or #3 Wide Gap. By using the larger hooks, the undersized fish that are released will have a much better chance of survival.
Tip #2
Also, wet your hands before handling the fish so when you are taking the hook out, your hands will not damage the protective coating of slime on the fish.
Tip #3
When you see seagulls hovering over the water, this means there are normally fish in that area. In order not to scare the fish, do not use your big motor when you get near the seagulls. Instead set up a drift or work your trolling motor as you get near or next to the seagulls in order not to scare the fish...
Tip #4
Avoid fishing in clear water unless you see bait fish activity or diving birds. Fishing in clear water spooks the fish too easily so look for off color water for the best fishing.
Tip #9
Tip #5
July is a great month for night fishing because you have 2 full moons and this way you can beat the heat of the hot sun during the day.
Tip #6
Try using cut bait or glow plastic lures in addition to top water lures for the best fishing.
Tip #7
When the water temperatures rise, as they do in the summer months, concentrate on deep water for trout in depths ranging from 4 to 6 feet. Free lined piggy perch or croaker should produce the best results.
Tip #8
If you are using lures, try a slower retrieve. Summertime fish are not as willing to chase baits. Reds should be in shallow water early, and later in the day, redfish should move to the edges of flats, where deeper cooler water is near.
