E

volution Kids Emporium is a family owned and operated children’s clothing boutique in Sugar Land, TX. The business was born out of a father’s desire for unique, stylish, high-quality clothes for his infant son. Tired of the same old department store merchandise, this diligent dad scoured boutiques all over the country to piece together an enviable wardrobe for his child. Endlessly bombarded with questions about where he found this or that item for his son, he realized that many other discerning, fashion 20 conscious parents were in a

predicament similar to his own. These thoughts flourished over time, culminating into the establishment of a one-of-akind store which offers only the finest, eye-catching children’s fashions money can buy.

STARTING A BUSINESS, ANYONE?

Bella Bleu Boutique shares 8 steps to start a boutique

M

illions of children are born each year, meaning many parents are looking to purchase baby clothing, toys and other necessary items. Even when spending is down, one area where people cannot avoid putting out money is when it comes to their children, especially a new baby. A baby boutique has the potential to be profitable and can be started in several ways, but you will need to carefully plan your venture before opening up for business. Step 1 Select a niche for your baby bou48

tique. You could sell organic baby clothing, second-hand baby items or designer baby brands. Your niche will determine your target market or target customer.. Step 2 Name your baby boutique, paying close attention to your target market and niche. For instance, if you’re trying to start an eco-friendly baby store, the name “Green Bundles of Joy” would be suitable, but the name “Patty’s Baby Boutique” wouldn’t be descriptive enough.

Step 3 Obtain the permits needed in your state to operate a retail business. This may include a fictitious name certificate, or DBA, resale permit, sales and use tax permit or employer identification number. Contact your local small business development center to see what is required. Step 4 Secure a selling venue for your inventory. This can be a brick and mortar store, flea market space, mall kiosk or online store. If you choose to sell online, you will need to purchase a domain name and e-commerce solution package, complete with web hosting, a shopping cart, editing software and design templates. Step 5 Rent or clear a space to store your inventory, if you will be opening an online baby boutique or your store is not large enough to handle extra

merchandise. A commercial warehouse or clean spare closet free on pets, dust, odors and sunlight would work well. Step 6 Buy wholesale baby clothing and merchandise. Purchasing inventory wholesale will allow you to make a profit by marking up your selling price. Step 7 Join a specialty retail association, such as the Children’s Apparel Retail Association, to network with suppliers, get marketing and business tips from peers, and gain new potential customers. Step 8 Promote your baby boutique. Open social networking accounts, start a promotional blog, place ads on popular websites frequented by new and expecting parents, give coupons to your local play groups and day cares, or host in-store events for parents, such as Lamaze or baby CPR classes. 49
