The custom home division of Arthur Schmidt Construction is actively building in Kerrville and surrounding areas. Building a custom home isn’t just about a set of house plans and some lumber. It’s about choosing a builder that can see what the home owner wants and providing them with the direction and skills needed to make their dream home reality.

Dear Lifestyle Reader

Dear Lifestyle reader,

I am so pleased to share with you the inaugural issue of Lifestyle – the magazine of Comanche Trace and the Texas Hill Country. What a terrific conversation piece to share with your friends and family! We have created it with you in mind to enhance membership communication and bring greater exposure to the Comanche Trace community and the Texas Hill Country. Lifestyle replaces the monthly Tidbits newsletter, and is published bimonthly. This new magazine will showcase the unique lifestyle and values that Comanche Trace and the Texas Hill Country have to offer. In this issue, you will learn more about the Robert Earl Keen family, residents of Comanche Trace for 5 years. Terri Emerson will share one of her passions and inform you about a hidden jewel in Kerrville. Gary and Kay Clymans toured the Texas Hill Country searching for the perfect getaway spot, and they can’t wait to tell you all about it in “Daytrips”. As you meet these folks, you will gain insight into what they love about Kerrville and the surrounding region. Looking to make a historical connection in Kerrville? The Museum of Western Art has been preserving the Western heritage in Kerrville for 27 years. This issue of Lifestyle covers the upcoming “Roundup Exhibit”, which runs from April 6 through May 15. Our own Valerie Olsen is Executive Director. Valerie and her husband, Olaf, became new residents of Comanche Trace last year. The diversity of interests among our residents is an indication of just how much there is to do here. From golf and tennis, walking trails, fitness classes with personal trainers, massage therapy, fine dining, fishing and community gardening, we have it all. Pets are an important part of the family for many of our residents, and Comanche Trace provides an open field area where dogs are allowed to run off-leash. In our “Pet Profile” section, you will find a heart-warming story from one of our residents highlighting their very special pet, Radar. We haven’t left out your news for tournament results, golf tips from Head Golf Professional, Tony Johnson and upcoming events! Features on member events, dining at the Pinnacle Grill and so much more are packed into this new, full-color publication. Comanche Trace Realty will keep you up-to-date on our real estate news with listings and articles capturing the essence of our development. The economy has not been kind to real estate developments over the last two years, yet Comanche Trace has continued to grow. We have added 120 acres to the development, making it 1,300 acres that comprise Comanche Trace. We now have over 270 completed homes. 2010 looks promising with 25 custom homes either in design stage, under construction or expected to begin construction this year. We value your feedback. If you have suggested feature articles or an interesting restaurant or shopping venue, please let us know. Comanche Trace is your home, and we encourage you to share your lifestyle with others. Who knows? You may meet a new friend, or business acquaintance through the pages of our new magazine, Lifestyle – the magazine of the Texas Hill Country. Sincerely, Trevor Hyde, PRESIDENT

QUILTING THE HILL COUNTRY

GUILD

“The quilting guild is great because it has enabled me to find other people in Comanche Trace with similar interests. We’ve all bonded and even carpool to meetings.” Terri Emerson, Comanche Trace resident

10 LIFESTYLE APRIL/MAY 2010

A Brief History In the summer of 1984 ten women met to discuss a common interest - their love of quilting. From this first meeting evolved the Hill Country Quilt Guild with a membership of 240 as of January 2006. The guild’s first project was a Sesquicentennial quilt. President Maudie Jacobsen presented it to the City of Kerrville and it now hangs on the second floor of the ButtHoldsworth Library. Meetings- The guild holds monthly meetings, which are held on the third Monday of each month at the Zion Lutheran Church, 624 Barnett@ Sidney Baker, Kerrville. The doors open at 9:00 a.m., business meeting at 9:30, and program at 11:00. Biennial Quilt Show - In odd numbered years we have a quilt show during Memorial Day weekend. This is a primary

fund raiser to enable us to have programs by nationally known quilt experts as well as local artists. We have a quilt raffle in conjunction with our show and also a boutique with items made and donated by our members. Spring Luncheon - In even numbered years we have a Spring Luncheon along with a raffle. Members donate small quilts for auction with the proceeds going into the guild’s general fund, allowing the guild to offer scholarships. Other Activities - We support and participate in those activities which encourage appreciation of fine quilts and quilt making. This includes displaying quilts in windows of businesses, the downtown visitors’ center, and the Kerr Arts & Cultural Center. Our members have made quilts for organizations in need, such as Ronald McDonald House in San Antonio and the Kerrville

organizations of Any Baby Can, The Crisis Council Center, the Veterans’ Hospital patients, Star Ranch for Boys, and K’Star. Bees - When a new member joins the guild, the best way to get to know other people is by joining a bee. A smaller group like this brings you in closer contact with a few people at a time. The Bee Keeper has a list of bees with openings for new members if you are interested in joining a bee. New bees are also formed when an interest is shown. Block of the Month - Each month the Block of the Month chairperson prepares fabric and a pattern for members to sew into blocks. Any member who wishes to participate may sign their name and take a block home. They sew it together according to the instructions and return it to the next meeting, cross out their name on the sign-up list and put their name in a box as

each person who has made a block is eligible for the drawing. The lucky winner becomes the owner of all the blocks. Members may make a block every month, but after winning must wait two years before being eligible to win again. Annual Luncheon MeetingsA potluck Holiday celebration is held in November, our last meeting of the year. Library - We have an extensive library of books and tapes which may be checked out for one month. Library additions are made through member donations and memorial book purchases. Fitness FITNESS

Many of the reasons residents have chosen Comanche Trace as their home have to do with the healthy lifestyle choices Comanche Trace offers. In addition to the many trails, tennis courts, and fitness center, Comanche Trace resident Donna Bowyer, CPT, brings a different alternative to what is normally thought of as “exercise.” A certified personal trainer who can work with clients one on one, Donna has expanded her repertoire to include group classes that provide more than a social outlet. Her attendees can attest to the improvement of their muscle tone, balance and coordination, strength and endurance, as well as better circulation and core stability. Monday morning classes start with strength training using weights, poles, and a little kick-boxing, for 50 to 55 minutes, your muscles will experience a workout that yields results. Wednesday morning, when working out with the balls and weights, balance and coordination are tested and complement Monday’s efforts. As Phyllis Gnuechtel attests, “No matter how sore I am, I always look forward to the next session!” Early last year, Donna added Zumba, a lively workout with a Latin flavor, to her group classes. Carol Whitaker says of Zumba, “…a great way to start the day…with lots of laughing, a bit of groaning, huffing and puffing to a Latin beat! Hoo Ra!” And Donna has yet to hear of a husband complain of the moves their wives have learned! Beginning in May, the aqua class at

the Comanche Trace community pool will kick off. Aqua exercise entices those who are recovering from injuries, or who appreciate the lower impact on joints. Even expectant moms will join the regulars for a water Boot Camp. “Donna is our boot camp darling… she thinks everyone is 20 and works us accordingly! Sign me, happy and firm!” (Peggy Hipple) As a personal trainer working one on one, Donna can custom design a workout using the equipment in the Comanche Trace fitness center or use the trail that extends for a mile around the pond as a warm-up, as she jogs along beside you for encouragement. The benefit of this personal attention is long after your paid sessions are complete, you will have gained the knowledge to continue the regimen she has designed just for you. To quote Gwyn Weaver, “Donna might be small, but she is a powerhouse when it comes to being a personal trainer. I was very impressed with her knowledge and the safe training program she designed for me. Her sessions are always fun but challenging.” Being fit and living in Comanche Trace comes natural to Comanche Trace residents with all of the options available. Well maintained roads make bicycling enjoyable and the many paths for walking and jogging offer opportunities to meet your neighbors and even buddy-up!

GOLF

Golf Update

After an unusually cold winter, spring is finally here and we are excited to have some warm weather. We should all be grateful to Scott Parker and his crew for keeping the golf course in excellent condition throughout the winter. Some of us who played at other courses in the area throughout the season realize how good we have it here at Comanche Trace. With the warmer temperatures, we look forward to seeing more of you out on the course knocking the rust off your game. We have some great Club events lined up in the next few months and we are anticipating a great turnout for them each. The first Club event of 2010 will be the 2nd Annual Pro-Member/ Member or Pro-Member/ Guest taking place on April 2nd. This is a great event in which we invite 20 of the top PGA professionals from across the state to compete with teams of either two of our members or a member and their guest. We began this tournament last year and a great time was had by all. We look forward to growing the event each year.

The next big event for 2010 will be The Brute which is held over Labor Day weekend on May 1st and 2nd. This is a really fun Match Play Challenge in which each two man team will play 5 nine hole matches over two days against the other teams within their flight. Back by popular demand in April is Twilight Golf. Twilight Golf is designed for couples to play golf and have dinner with other couples in a fun, social environment. These are held on Friday evenings at 5 pm on April 9th and 23rd as well as May 28th. Players of all handicaps are welcome to participate. Also on the horizon is our Club Championship held on June 4th , 5th, 6th and our first Kid Comanche camp of the summer held on June 15th thru the 18th. We are also very excited about the Hole in One club we started at the end of 2009. We hope that all of our members sign up for this. When a member of the Hole in One Club makes an ace here at Comanche Trace, each of the other members will be billed $5.00. The money will then be placed into the Credit Book

account of the person making the hole in one. We currently have 95 members enrolled and we would like to congratulate Mike Kerstetter, Dave Phelps, Jay Maney and Leonard Scott who have made hole in ones since the club started. Enjoy your rewards and good luck this year to all of those enrolled. We look forward to having our membership participate in these events. It is our goal to have a tournament and event schedule that provides everything from competitive tournaments to events that focus on fun for our Comanche Trace members. Please let us know if you have any questions and let’s all have a great 2010 out on the golf course.

DINING

By: David Lopez Executive Chef Comanche Trace.

20 LIFESTYLE APRIL/MAY 2010

Dining

Comanche Trace offers a great view of the Hill Country and a great dining experience at The Pinnacle Grill. From the up scale Vista and Trophy rooms to our more relaxed grill and outside patio. We have three levels of catering spaces to accommodate small intimate groups to the large social gatherings. The Vista room is a great place for weddings, family reunions, or birthday parties because of its spacious floor plan, private bar, and most of all, its spectacular view of the Hill Country. The Trophy room offers space for the smaller dinner parties and social gatherings, while our lower level room is great for open space banquets and meetings. Our banquet area is not limited to inside the Club. We also do poolside parties, and river park on the Guadalupe River. From our formal dining to our casual atmosphere, we offer a wide variety of choices from traditional to up scale entrées. Menu selections include: veal, seafood, chicken, and pasta. Our specialty meats are all hand cut from the rack of lamb to the bone in rib eye and beef tenderloin. For those on the run, we

offer our quick lunch buffet on Fridays. They can have a choice of homemade soup and salad bar to our full buffet that includes dessert for less than ten dollars. We also provide a choice of weekly lunch specials for every day of the week. For our evening dinners, we offer weekly dinner specials throughout the month. There is always something going on at the Club when it comes to dinning with us. Every Saturday we offer our slow roasted prime rib dinner and every Sunday we offer our Sunday brunch menu with a complimentary Mimosa for our guests. DAYTRIPS

DAYTRIPS Kerrville can certainly boast some of the finest vistas, the most beautiful sunsets, and the most idyllic weather. We all know that there is a lot more of the Hill Country to see out there. Whether cruising the wineries, having a beer in Luckenbach, or window shopping in Boerne, the possibilities are endless for those blessed enough to live in one of the most beautiful regions of the country. For this inaugural issue, we wanted to take you on a virtual cruise to one of the Hill Country’s most well-known getaways: Wimberley, TX. Nestled in the hills east of Blanco, Wimberley is a well kept secret that features many activities that make for a perfect day trip. We asked Gary and Kay Clymans of Comanche Trace, to fill us in on some of the best spots to visit and took off for a delightful day taking it all in. There are certainly several ways to get to Wimberley, and some are faster than others. The most direct and scenic route is to take FM 473 out of Comfort, and follow that through some of the Hill

By Ben Schooley Country’s most beautiful landscapes. Stay on 473 all the way through Sisterdale, through Kendalia, over 281, and it will eventually bump into FM 32. Turn right, then a quick left on Fischer Store Rd, and you’re in Wimberley in a matter of minutes. If you’re arriving around lunchtime, RR 12 leaving Wimberley will take you directly up to the World Famous Salt Lick BBQ. Simply a must-visit location, the Salt Lick has been serving up BBQ since the late ‘60s. Texans are picky about their BBQ, and there’s a reason the Salt Lick has been around for as long as it has. Sitting beneath the huge oaks on the property, having a Big Red or a cold beer while eating delectable brisket is simply heaven. Back in the heart of Wimberley, we had a great time touring a taste of Tuscany at Bella Vista Ranch. A fully operational olive orchard, it was simply delightful to sample fresh olive oils and wines. Walking through the orchard, taking in all the sights and smells was intoxicating,

and certainly transports you to Italy! After our tour, we were given 4 different wines to sample, and absolutely fell in love with the Blackberry wine, which is a signature wine that Bella Vista Ranch manufactures. Now that you are fed and light-headed from tremendous wines, you must visit Wimberley Glass Works. Tim deJong’s studio is world-renowned for creating some of the most unique and beautiful custom glass via his glass-blowing techniques. Wednesday through Sunday you can pop in and enjoy one of his free glass blowing shows. He and his team of apprentices use their speed and their breath to create one of a kind pieces of art that have made his studio Wimberley’s most well known destination. We sat transfixed for quite some time watching a true craftsman create his art. His works are pricey to purchase, but most pure art is. The rest of your day in Wimberley should (in this author’s humble opinion) be spent simply enjoying the shops, the food, and the beauty. Wimberley is truly

an artist’s mecca, with various art galleries and exhibitions occurring most every weekend. The beautiful Blanco River runs through town, and with its crystal clear water and centuries old Cypress trees, it simply begs you to enjoy a picnic on the banks. Artisans in various trades and specialties have their wares exhibited in countless stores, and you are sure to find something that strikes your fancy. Regardless of what you seek or find, Wimberley is the perfect destination to enjoy the day, disappear into the beauty of the Hill Country, and return restored and refreshed. “We always enjoy our trip to Wimberley because there are so many fun and interesting things to do.”- Gary and Kay Clymans

TEXAS AT HOME IN

SINGERSONGWRITER ROBERT EARL KEEN, JR.

In Texas, music is huge. Rivaled only by Nashville, the Texas music circuit boasts some of the strongest support for its musicians in the country. From the Tuesday night “open-mic” to a Saturday night at Gruene Hall, Texans are blessed with some of the finest musicians in the country in every venue imaginable. And of all the musical genres available, none is more popular than that of the Texas Singer-Songwriter. And arguably, of all the Texas Singer-Songwriters, none are more popular than Robert Earl Keen, Jr. Performing hundreds of dates every year for almost 30 years, Keen

I WAS MORE INTERESTED IN MUSIC, ART WRITING AND HAPPY HOUR has built a rabid following that now extends across the country and has him playing to packed venues everywhere he goes. While Keen was certainly born to perform, the road to success has involved hard work, determination, and sincere passion. And those traits have brought Robert, his wife Kathleen, and his daughters Chloe and Clara home to Comanche Trace. “My dad was in the oil business and my mom was an attorney. As for me, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Until I was about 18, I didn’t 28 LIFESTYLE APRIL/MAY 2010

know there was any other lifestyle other than being out on a rig. There were little ants out there working in the world; human beings worked in the oil business. I didn’t have any interest in following in his footsteps, though. I was more interested in music, art, writing, and happy hour,” Keen laughs. Keen stumbled upon his sister’s guitar and he found a release for much of his passion. “My sister had an old beat up guitar, and I just picked it up and strummed on it. I got really locked into music with my sister because she was just a big hellraiser. She was the unofficial Houston Foosball Champion. She’s 15, smoking, and playing foosball in all these bars. I’d go in the other room and listen to some guy playing Kenny Loggins. At that point, I just realized this is IT. He could be right in front of me playing guitar, and it was fantastic.” With guitar in tow, Keen graduated high school and began looking at college. “I had no idea what I was going to do really, so I just took the line of least resistance and went to A&M with totally no plan. I asked my friend (Brian) Duckworth, ‘Where are you going to school?’ So that was the plan, I’d go where he was. So they let me in. It was the last day of enrollment, and once I got in, I did nothing for a year. I was an Undeclared major, but eventually I

got in the English department. That’s what was so fun about A&M; they’re not exactly renowned for their English department!” And while in school, Keen didn’t let his studies get in the way of his musical interests. “I got kicked out of school a couple of times. They never really offered any assistance; they just booted you. The second time I got kicked out, I found a pamphlet offering study help, but it said they were meeting at the Dixie Chicken. That really wasn’t what I needed!” Keen’s first band was called “The Front Porch Boys”, and it was here that Keen was forced to go in different directions. “I had just graduated from A&M. There were always 4 or 5 of us in the Front Porch Boys. Toward the end, we tried to make some money with it. We were

making all this effort, but weren’t really getting anywhere. One day I was going to Austin and was going to buy a PA. When I got back, they said, ‘We’ve decided that you’re no longer in the band’. I said ‘OK fine, I’ve got the PA system!’ So I moved to Austin in ’80 and took my damn PA. That’s where I really started enjoying what I was doing.“ Keen began playing around Austin, but still with a need for money, he was forced to find a job. He eventually landed with the Railroad Commission, where he worked for a year and a half. After saving up enough money, Keen sent his parents on a European vacation; while they were on the trip, Keen quit his job and returned his full-time focus to music. “During that time, I was learning the ropes. I was playing anyplace that would let me

Robert Earl Keen on his porch in Comanche Trace

play. I would just play for tips in these really funky places. But they wanted music, so they’d let me do it, but really what I was doing was practicing. I had kept another job or two, but it was flunkee stuff; construction work, or runner stuff. Heck, I even worked with the IRS. I worked with them for 4 months. It was from 4am-2pm…my boss had to go out in my car and wake me up after lunch each day. Obviously that didn’t work out.” After a substantial amount of “practice” behind him, Keen released No Kinda Dancer in 1984. About the same time, he went to watch an Austin City Limits show that would change his life. “On December 10, 1984, a big group of us friends went to this Nancy Griffith concert at Austin City Limits. We went there and afterward went to the Texas Chili Parlor. We sat there and drank till the world looked level. I got to talking to Kathleen, and after several hours we looked up and everybody was gone. Well, they threw us out so I asked her on a date, and we went and rode the little train around Zilker Park. Eventually I asked her to move in, and on June 18, 1985, she did.” At about the same time, Keen had been eyeing a move to Nashville. “I ran into Steve Earle in Austin. Steve told me there were too many pretty girls in Austin, too much cheap dope, and that it was too close to Mexico. It was too easy. So I had to move to

Nashville. And what’s funny is that it’s the truth. If musicians don’t get out of Austin, they’ll never make it. So you go to Nashville and you suffer. It’s unbelievable. And then you really appreciate life in Austin. Everybody’s out to become successful in Nashville. Somebody’s going there right now to live the dream. And that’s what you’re competing with every day. Austin has serious talent, but not serious drive.” Being newlyweds, Kathleen was ready for the adventure. She says, “As for life with Robert, I didn’t have anything to compare it to. I was just off to have an adventure with Robert. I didn’t know what to expect, but every day was a party for me. I got great jobs, but the hardest part was not having any money. We never had any. We didn’t pay any attention to it…we just had a great time together.” But while they enjoyed Nashville, things quickly changed. “Robert had gone to do a gig in Lawrence, KS. We came home and our house had been robbed. They took a 6” TV and his jar of pennies, which was pretty much all we had. So he got upset about it and decided we were going to move. Within 4 days, we were gone. The Lo Mein song is about it.” Robert adds, “So we came back to Austin. Steve (Earle), Lyle (Lovett), and Nancy (Griffith)had all become huge stars. And I was literally digging ditches. I was frustrated – it wasn’t a

good time. It started out scary, and heavy radio play in Texas and people nothing was going right. I could just began to take notice. And as people see myself getting stuck in a rut with it. took notice, they also began showing I figured that if I’m going to wash out, up for his shows. Keen says, “We put I’m moving back to Texas.” this little gig together and I got there So in 1987 the Keen family moved late. The parking lot was completely to Bandera, where Kathleen’s parents full and there were people everywhere. operated a nursing home. Kathleen I could barely get to the front door, quickly went to work, and Robert and I asked some guy at the back of became quite depressed at the the line ‘What’s the deal?’ And the direction his career was headed. “I guy said ‘This guy Robert Earl Keen sat around for 5 months with my head is going to play.’ So I said ‘You’ve got in my hands. Mary Jane Nalley from to be kidding me.’ There were at least Gruene Hall called and said ‘Wanna 1500 people there. And it was truly play?’ I said ‘I don’t know.’ She said ‘I’ll the power of radio. I’d go to some let you play in the front part all summer stations, and they’d talk to me and let long’. I said ‘I don’t know – I don’t me play, but they’d never play my stuff. want to overexpose myself. Maybe “I sat around for 5 months with I’ll play once.’ It my head in my hands. Mary Jane was possibly the stupidest thing Nalley from Gruene Hall called I’ve ever said. I and said ‘Wanna play?’. called her back and said ‘I’ll take as much as you’ll give me.’ So I played twice a week. But others would. Some of them would And that’s the thing; while I was in play anything.” Nashville I was actually getting better. “That was the launching point for I was practicing and writing, and I me,” Keen continued.“I was playing to began putting together some good 1000 to 1200 people at a time as a solo songs. So I started getting these so I decided to put together the band. gigs, and it started really inspiring me. country, and in Texas we would push 3000 people. It was just a combo of the times, the radio, and some of my bigger songs.” And speaking of bigger songs, “The Road Goes on Forever but the Party Never Ends” is as big as they come for Keen. An anthem for college kids across the country, no song had such a huge response nor did more to propel Keen into the spotlight in a much larger scale. Keen describes the song, “I wanted a song that was moving. It had a story, and I just started with this woman that worked with Kathleen and she was with this guy that was real rough. No matter what good luck landed on them, they would manage to screw it all up. The story from there is just the way I wanted it to go.” Kathleen and Robert began to finally enjoy the successes of their many years of hard work and in 1994 welcomed their first daughter, Clara. 6 years later, Chloe was born. Kathleen says, “Early on I would travel with Robert. We went all sorts of places. We went in his truck with his black lab and argued over radio stations. Over time, I didn’t travel with him at all anymore. He’s gone a lot, and we have a 9th grader and a 4th grader now. Somebody always has to be home.” That balance of home life and the road began to change the family’s priorities, and the Keens began to look for a change. “We lived out in the country, and it just got to be too difficult. I was gone all the time, and I wasn’t even aware of how hard it was 30 LIFESTYLE APRIL/MAY 2010

on the family. The kids were ok with it, but Kathleen was really isolated. The line between solitude and isolation is very blurry. So we decided to move, and one day we were in town bringing the kids to preschool. I suggested we check out Comanche Trace. So Kathleen came here and drove around. But we weren’t quite ready to move.” It only took one incident to change their minds. “One day I woke and Kathleen was shooting feral cats with a .22,” he said.“With that I laughed and said ‘Let’s get out of here’! Kathleen found this really great lady; Leslie was our agent. We set up this meeting with the homeowner of this house and we walked in the door and we went through each room. The agent pointed out the butler’s pantry, and Kathleen and I had this huge argument about whether we needed a butler’s pantry. So I said, ‘This must be the house if it has a butler’s pantry’. So we drove back home and made the decision to purchase it.” And once the decision had been made to move to Comanche Trace, the Keens couldn’t be happier. “We love Comanche Trace. If Chloe wants a lesson, she calls the club and she gets a lesson. If you want dinner you call up the club and even if they’re closing, they’ll set the table for you. Anything that happens is addressed here, and you have no worries. We also have a Christmas party here every year, and we’ve made so many friends. You get to meet people that are just so wonderful, and the entire community of

Comanche Trace is so great.” Happily relocated, the Keens continue their many “adventures”. Kathleen is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Education at Schreiner University. She says, “I hope to teach history at Schreiner. I’m 48, and it’s taken me a long time to get my life together and answer to higher authorities. Schreiner let me in this program, and I made a 4.0 in my first semester. I wouldn’t think education would be my field, but they offered it, and it made sense for me.” As for Keen’s daughters, Clara (15) dreams of being a writer and is quite gifted with the upright bass. Chloe (9) is a tremendous violin player and is excelling at school. Robert is working

on another album and is performing with the Dave Matthews Band for various dates this year. He also will be performing with the Youth Orchestra on April 8 at the Cailloux Theatre. And as the family’s interests and tastes change, Robert tries to keep his perspective

musically. “There’s a point where people lose their relevance as an

artist. As long as I’m relevant, write new songs, and can be part of the music of the world and contribute, then I want to play. When the day comes that I’m still playing only for the money or the ego…I wanna quit. I want to be able to let it go. If your art isn’t relevant, you should give back and teach somebody.”

VWX The MUSEUM

of WESTERN ART

ROUNDUP ART SHOW AND SALE

Comanche Trace supports many nonprofits in the area that provide valuable resources to the community. One such nonprofit is the Museum of Western Art. The Kemmerer Family Foundation and Comanche Trace donated $25,000 last year to The Museum of Western Art because of its direct impact on the local community and its support of many talented local artists. One such event that enables the Museum to benefit local artists is the 27th Annual RoundUp Art Show and Sale on April 9th and 10th.

RoundUp’s events begin in the Museum on Friday, April 9th, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with the RoundUp Show Preview, and a Quick Draw event by some of the artists invited. Saturday, April 10th, begins with the Stampede Sale from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Followed by the Live Auction of the Quick Draw art works. Proceeds from this year’s Roundup benefit educational projects and exhibitions. The Museum of Western Art is an outstanding facility that provides the opportunity for all to relive the Western Heritage through great Western Art. During RoundUp 2010 weekend guests will have the opportunity to meet participating artists such as John Bennett, Teal Blake, Phil Bob Borman, Michael Boyett, Mary Ross Buchholz, Mark Clapham, Karen Cooper, H. Clay Dahlberg, June Dudley, J. C. Dye, Jimmy Dyer, Curtis Dykes, Jim Eppler, Brian Grimm, Edd Hayes, Jay 32 LIFESTYLE APRIL/MAY 2010

Schumpert, Sharon Standridge, Sheila Swanson, Jack Terry, T.W. Vanya, V… Vaughan, Herman Walker, Roy Lee Ward, and Tanner Wells. ABOUT THE MUSEUM As the last public project of the famed Southwestern architect O’Neil Ford, the Museum is an architectural work of art in its own right. The exterior of the building features heavy timbers and rugged retaining walls of stacked limestone, similar to a fortressed hacienda. Once inside, 23 boveda domes made from lightweight Mexican brick, draw the eyes upward to the ceiling, giving visitors a glimpse of artisans’ work rarely seen today. End-cut Mesquite wood, and Saltillo tile floors are polished to a warm glow, complementing the Western artwork displayed in over 14,000 square feet of gallery space. The Museum of Western Art opened in April 1983, and was first known as the Cowboy Artists of America Museum. In the years since, hundreds of thousands of visitors have walked the Museum galleries and have seen the West brought to life through the artwork on display. Depicting every aspect of Western life, the art on display features the hard working Cowboys, the Plains Indians, women of the West, settlers, mountain men and

more. Other displays highlight the history of famous ranches, the diversity of our Western culture and the traditional talents of its skilled craftsmen. Through these exhibits, the Museum shares the heritage of the West with an ever-widening audience. An expanding Education department has offered training to hundreds of up-and-coming artists in applied techniques of Western art through its program, Western Art Academy. In 2004, the Masel S. Quinn Pavilion of the Western Art Academy was completed and made ready for use, in the Museum’s art education program. The following year, the Journey West Children’s Gallery was completed, highlighting the history of the American West. In addition, area educators, students, writers, as well as the public make frequent use of the Museum’s 5,000 volume Western art and history library. In preserving and promoting the heritage of the American West, the Museum is committed to exhibiting the very finest artwork by today’s best-known Western artists, as well as periodic exhibits featuring famous masters of the past. In all that it does, the Museum serves as a bridge between the past and present, ensuring that the legacy of the American West will be preserved for the future. Going the Distance HOME TOUR

GOING THE DISTANCE By: Jeanna Goodrich

We were building long-distance, and we needed someone that we could trust,” Jennifer said. “Kelley attracted us to White Construction, simply because of her commitment to us. Kelley and I discovered that she really understood what I liked and what I didn’t like, and that was so important when making these decisions long-distance—there were even times that I asked Kelley to just make some decisions for me.

knew we wanted something we could be proud of,” Jennifer continued. “We like spacious interiors, and so we wanted the whole living area open,” Dave added. “I told Garrett that we didn’t want a lot of rooms that we didn’t use, which is why we wanted an over-sized office that we could make into a comfortable bedroom if we needed.” The house fits snugly on the lot, and the windows in the living room, kitchen, and office look out over Hole #4 on the Hills Golf Course. “Designwise, Garrett did a great job incorporating all of the views,” Glinn said.“The Phelps really do have one of the best offices in Kerrville!” “Initially, we discussed having a Tuscan design,” Dave said. “Garrett started designing the exteriors, but we started seeing heavy and dark beams that weren’t really part of the look we were going for. We then discovered that we were probably going for a more Mediterranean feel, with the open spaces and more welcoming colors.” “Too many architects have in their minds what the design wants to be, but Garrett really did listen to us and designed a home from what we wanted,” Jennifer added. “Garrett works so well with Glinn and Kelley, and we were very comfortable with our building team.” Once the design was completed, the Whites began the building process. “We’d schedule days when Dave and Jennifer would be down here, and we’d go over all kinds of decisions that needed to be made, from paint colors and tile selections, to appliances.” Kelley said. “That’s the fun part of the job!” “When I wanted to look at the build,

Though it was “purely by luck” that Dave and Jennifer Phelps found their stunning golf-course lot at Comanche Trace, it was much more than luck designing and building a home to match. The Phelpses, along with custom builders Kelley and Glinn White of White Construction, have completed a masterpiece, truly worth the warm and welcoming Comanche Trace lifestyle. Mediterranean-inspired with a mix of the Hill Country, the Phelps’s home boasts open and airy interiors with light, earthy exteriors. Exposed timbers both inside and out add classic Hill Country flair. “We purchased the lot, worked with Garrett [Harmon, with Harmon Taylor Architects] on the design, and started looking for builders, all within a week’s amount of time,” Jennifer said regarding their decision to move to Texas. “When we first came down here, it was purely by luck,” Dave said. “I had done an Internet search, and found Comanche Trace in the Hill Country. We visited and liked what we saw, but there were only a handful of houses here. Initially, we looked at purchasing one of the custom villas. In the mean time, a sales person had told us that this lot had come back on the market. When we saw it, we instantly liked it.” After purchasing the lot, the Phelpses had a difficult task at hand: building a home long-distance. “We were building long-distance, and we needed someone that we could trust,” Jennifer said. “Kelley attracted us to White Construction, simply because of her commitment to us. Kelley and I discovered that she really understood what I liked and what I didn’t like, and that was so important when making these decisions long-distance—there were even times that I asked Kelley to just make some decisions for me.” “Having built houses before, we

Kelley would drop everything to come out and work with me,” Jennifer added. “Kelley worked with us driving around looking at combinations of stucco, rock, roofing, and other elements around Comanche Trace, and that really got us on the right track.” Kelley chimed in, “There are some huge decisions that need to be made that need to be something you’re in love with. It was important that we worked together on those decisions, because they can’t be things that are just ‘ok’—they have to be perfect.” The Whites proved to the Phelpses that the design was all in the details. “Kelley and Glinn are very detail oriented,” Jennifer said.“Whenever we were here to participate in the building decisions, we knew what we had to do and we got it done!” From antique pieces to modern designs, the Phelps’s home incorporates the best of both worlds. “I like to find old elements and incorporate them into new houses,” Kelley said. She noted that the Phelps’s pantry door is from India, adding a cultural flair to the design in the kitchen area. It’s really fun to do things like that. “For me, the best part is when

we’re done, if the house matches the personality of our clients, then we’ve done our job. When you can walk into a home and feel warm, then we’ve built a house for a family, rather than just for show.” “The two things we hear most from people who come in is that they love the front door and they love the pantry door,” Dave said. “Kelley does different things with doors a lot, and it’s something unique; people who see the house for the first time really notice.” From the smiles on their faces, both the Phelpses and the Whites couldn’t be more proud of a home that encompasses the character of the family that lives in it. ““I like to think of it as warm and comfortable,” Jennifer said; “and I like the openness of it,” Dave added. “When people walk into the house, they stop and immediately see the view and comment on how open and airy it is.” “They have eliminated the wasted space, as there are virtually no hallways, but the house is still comfortable and elegant and fits them,” Kelley said. “The Phelps’s house describes the lifestyle of Comanche Trace.”

REAL ESTATE

By: Reggie Cox, Broker

Comanche Trace is pleased that Links Magazine has recognized our community in its 2009 Premier Properties Issue as a “Best Value” Development. What does “value” mean? It means a good buy with all that entails. Comanche Trace offers a solid foundation with lot and home price points to meet a variety of needs. The community has grown to 270 households approximately 600 residents. Homes from patio homes to large dream homes can be found in our neighborhoods. Daily activities include championship golf, 24,000 sq. ft. club house with a rich history, swimming pool, tennis, fitness center and classes, private river park, fishing lake, crushed granite walking trails of varying terrain, play ground, community garden and great neighbors. There is more to value than the price of your property – how about how you spend your days. Since its inception in 1999, Comanche Trace has steadily grown to become the best master planned community in the hill country. The town of Kerrville located on the Guadalupe River provides a wonderful place to live with all the necessities including a new hospital complex that opened in 2008 to serve Kerr County. The HEB grocery chain was started

in Kerrville and their store here was recently expanded. The art community in Kerrville is second to none for a city of just under 25,000 residents. Live music and theater in several excellent venues provide entertainment and participation by residents. Boutique shopping or “Big City” malls are only a short drive away. There is value in surroundings – Comanche Trace is located on hill country acreage that offers incredible views of both the Texas hill country and 27 of the prettiest golf holes anywhere. We are blessed with unsurpassed hill country location – great year around weather and genuinely friendly people. The land lent itself to a beautiful golf course – Tom Kite and Jay and Carter Moorish put their special touches into the design of the course. We are proud of the accolades we have received. The surroundings and views here are awesome – what a great value. There is value in neighbors – Comanche Trace has approximately 600 residents from all sorts of backgrounds – some native to Kerrville, many from other states and the rest of Texas. With all of the activities including community dinners, bridge club, book club, poker groups, mahjong, walking groups, fitness classes, Men’s Golf Association and

Ladies’ Golf Association, Lady Niners, and so much more, you will value your time with your neighbors. There is value in time – With the relaxed attitude here in the hill country you will have time to contemplate your surroundings, sit and toast the gorgeous sunsets and moonrises from your outdoor spaces. There is no prettier sight than a full moon coming up over the hills or a dramatic sunset from your own back porch. There is value in a good buy – Comanche Trace has lots priced from $49,000 to $300,000. Homes from $249,000 to $2,000,000. There are architecturally themed neighborhoods such as Tuscan Village. Several neighborhoods have yard maintenance for a fee through the Home Owners Association. These neighborhoods are perfect for those who want to “lock and leave” while they travel or want a second home for spending their valuable time in the hill country. There are neighborhoods suited for building a single family home and others for the dream home you have been planning for a long time. No other master planned community in the hill country has such a variety of homes ready to move into. If your dream is to design and build that one of a kind, there are

lots ready to provide the setting for that perfect home. There is value in consistency – Comanche Trace has architectural guidelines which are intended to create a tranquil place where good design expands on the existing quality of life in the hill Country and its natural beauty. These guidelines allow for creativity within a context of a hill country community – several styles are preferred – hill country, German settlement, hacienda, and European Country – there is a process of plan approval which assures that your investment continues to flourish because of the ongoing quality control. There is value in recognition – Comanche is proud of the accolades we have received – We have been awarded top rankings and reviews in such publications as Golf Digest, Links Magazine, Golf Week, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Where to Retire and of course, the number one compliment paid by over 400 buyers of homes and lots in Comanche Trace. If you look for the value in beauty, time, a good buy, and friendly neighbors, you owe it to yourself to check out Comanche Trace. Call Stacy or Renee today to make time to come and look for a value of your own. TEXASLIFESTYLE.ORG APRIL/MAY 2010 39

WHY REBALANCE YOUR PORTFOLIO? Simply stated, staying the course doesn’t mean driving with blinders. Investors should monitor their portfolios regularly to determine if they support and respond to their financial goals.

Article Submitted by

Marianne Wofford Vice President Financial Advisor

Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Kerrville, TX 830-792-2100

For years, investors have heard the mantra of investing for the long term. That is, to create a portfolio based on your goals and stick with it despite the rumblings of a fickle market or the allure of popular trends. In theory, this is a suitable strategy for many investors, but staying the course wisely should also acknowledge the need for the occasional mandatory detour, taking on additional passengers, having fender benders and making complete about-faces. The better prepared a portfolio is to respond to these unforeseeable life events, the more likely it will be able to help you reach your desired financial destination.

Seven Rules of Effective Portfolio Maintenance

ANNUAL REBALANCING Annual rebalancing is key to the long-term health of your portfolio. Rebalancing involves shifting assets from one type of investment to another to bring a portfolio in line with an asset mix created for specific goals. If this action is done on a regular or automatic basis, you can help ensure that your portfolio stays on track.

• Don’t rely on natural progressions in the market to rebalance a portfolio. But keep in mind that this practice is not applicable to total equity portfolios, because stocks typically appreciate over time.

Many mutual fund companies offer the option of automatic rebalancing within various investment programs. This service can help investors avoid micromanaging their portfolios and it furthers the lines of communication between an investor and his or her financial advisor. In addition, this enforces use of the commonly embraced discipline of selling high and buying low.

• Construct an initial portfolio with a goal-sensitive allocation of stocks, bonds and cash. Keep informed about the subsets and varieties of these categories. • Be aware of your short- and long-term goals when designing your portfolio. • Generally, make more comprehensive rebalancing an annual event. Many experts agree that investors who rebalance at this interval or slightly longer reap many of the same benefits as those who do so more often. • Remember that rebalancing comes from paring down or eliminating specific investments in a portfolio. In many cases there may be tax consequences, like realized capital gains. Try not to burden yourself with tax liabilities you may not be prepared to handle. Yet at the same time, you must weigh the benefits of overall return over some tax savings.

• Consider contributing to your portfolios via a systematic or dollar-cost averaging strategy. Systematic investing, the process of making consistent contributions on a regular basis, can help bring you closer to your financial goals. • Stand by your plan. Your portfolio was created to respond to a number of scenarios and goals. Don’t allow yourself to be easily swayed by the latest trends, but do contact your Financial Advisor if you feel the need to make a change. She is past president of the noon Rotary Club of Kerrville.

Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Morgan Stanley & Co. Incorporated and Morgan Stanley Smith Barney’s Financial Advisers do not provide tax or legal advice, are not “fiduciaries” (under ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code or otherwise) with respect to the services or activities described herein, and this material was not intended or written to be used for the purpose of avoiding tax penalties that may be imposed on the taxpayer. Individuals are urged to consult their tax or legal adviser before establishing a retirement plan or to understand the tax, ERISA and related consequences of any investments made under such plan. Rebalancing and systematic or periodic investing does not assure a profit or protect against loss in declining financial markets. An investor should be prepared to continue the program of investing at regular intervals, even during economic downturns.
