Growth within Comanche Trace continues to dominate our conversations. With 24 homes completed in 2010 and 2011, and another 10 currently under construction, we estimate the impact to the community to be significant. If you consider that another 17 homes may begin construction later this year and into 2012, Kerrville will see a tremendous improvement in ad valorem tax revenues. Our community stands to grow to approximately 300 homes by the end of 2012. That is exciting news! Our golf course is in beautiful condition, thanks to the vision of our ownership. An agreement with the City of Kerrville allows us to purchase recycled (treated effluent) water to maintain the golf course. Overseeding the course begins this month, and we look forward to showing off some new looks with the recent bunker renovations. We also began applying recycled water to the HOA landscape from a pump truck to maintain the investment you have made in this community. Thank you for your continued support of the club and the new menu at the Pinnacle Grill, as well as the weekly dinner specials. Your participation is greatly appreciated. All the best,

FALL BACK IN THE SWING Fall is approaching and we will soon forget the 100 degree day temperatures we had over the summer time. However, when the heat was at 100 during the summer so was the excitement of our member events! The Men’s Club Championship had some excitement with a little bit of rain on Saturday’s round. This was the first time all year that I saw some umbrellas on the course. The championship flight had strong players in the field. After round one, Michael

8 LIFESTYLE october/november 2011

Burniston and Ed Sanchez were tied with a 2 under par round of 70 followed by Matt Griffin, Mike Lewis, Gabe Wilson, and Bill Stillwell who were only a couple of shots away. With the rainy conditions on Saturday scores were much higher than day one. Ed Sanchez shot a 73, launching him ahead of the field with an 8 shot lead into the last round. With a final score of 75, Ed Sanchez won the Men’s Club championship. Coming in second with rounds of 70, 81, and 76

was Michael Burniston. The players in the field who were over the age of 50 were also competing for the Senior Club Champion parking spot. Mike Lewis earned that new spot with rounds of 75, 77, and 80. In the first flight, Cris Miller won first place with net scores of 76 – 71 and following in second was Bill Novak with 78 – 72. In the second flight, Chuck McKeen took first with a net 67 and 72 for a total of 139, and tied for second a two-day total of 143 were Randy Spear and Gary Nelson. The Couples Club Championship was hosted in August and we saw great play from all the couples. Each couple had to play their own ball on every hole through both rounds. The couple then recorded their one lowest net score on each hole, but they had to have 9 holes from each partner each day. After round one on Saturday, there were many couples at the top of the leader board with net scores between 66 and 68. As the heat was rising on that Sunday afternoon so was the competition between the couples. With an impressive second round score of 63, Steve and Linda Phillips won the Couples Club Championship. It was a great two days of golf and I would like to congratulate our 2011 Couples Champions, Steve and Linda Phillips for their outstanding play. In second place just a few shots back were Hartley & Kathy McHone with scores of 68 and 63. Finishing in third place were Chet & Anne Hearn with scores of 66 and 66.

The summer was a great success for the Comanche Trace Juniors. Each participant received quality golf instruction from our PGA Golf Professionals; Tony Johnson, Jacob Davis and Colby Cobb. They also enjoyed food, prizes and fun with others. We kicked off the summer with our 2011 Kid Comanche Camp, which involved golf, tennis, swimming and who could forget the Friday pizza parties. Each junior that participated received a shirt and lessons from our certified golf staff. Toward the end of the summer for the first time ever, Comanche Trace offered a specialized junior golf academy. This program was offered to ages 12-15 and limited spots were available so that each individual received the private instruction they needed. They were given the opportunity to play the course and eat in our Pinnacle Grill each day. Thank you to all those who participated, we look forward to seeing everyone in the coming year for our Saturday golf clinics, and each participant returning next summer. If you have not already noticed we have received our new fleet of carts from Club Car. Our new fleet has a new color and some of the new changes that Club Car has made to their new carts. The bag protector is a new design to help keep your clubs drier from rain seeping through, and a new front dashboard lies flatter and allows the ability to see and

grab necessities quicker and easier. See the photo on the page to the left of our new fleet - we hope that everyone enjoys them. During the months of October and November we have a great schedule of events for members to play. The Ladies Club Championship will be held on October 7th and 8th. I hope to see a great event play out like last years final round by Barbara Lipe who will be defending her championship. The Men’s MGA Championship will be held on October 15th and 16th. This event used to be in December and due to risk of having cold weather we have moved it to October. On Friday October 21st, The American Red Cross charity golf classic will be hosted again by Comanche Trace. This great event supplies much needed assistance to our local Red Cross and is supported by so many of our members. Following in November will be the 8th Annual James Avery Hill Country Golf Classic. This event brings in some top rated amateurs to compete in this three day Hill Country Event.

TONY’S TIPS:

PUTTING PROBLEMS Speed tends to be the biggest problem most people have with putting, but occasionally direction can be the culprit. If you are hitting putts right and left, focus on the angle the right wrist forms and try to maintain it throughout the entire putting stroke (left wrist if you are left handed). When this angle releases prematurely, depending upon the timing of the stroke, the ball can go right or left. The key word in that last sentence is timing; we want less of that if we want to be consistent. Steve Stricker on the PGA tour is a fabulous example of this if you want to watch someone do this. If anything, the angle can increase as you putt but never decrease. Try this and

Tony Johnson, PGA Head Golf Professional Comanche Trace

watch those putts track towards the hole!

ZONE!

A CHALLENGE TO REVIVE AND RENOVATE YOUR REGULAR EXCERCISE PROGRAM By Jane Garbish

F

!

INALLY The heat wave of the past summer is behind us and it’s beginning to feel good to be outside again. It’s very likely that some of you either abandoned, or at least greatly modified, your fitness regimen over the summer since it was just too darn hot for outside exertion. So, now it’s back to the walking or biking or whatever your routine used to be. And let’s face it – the only successful exerciser is the one that actually has, and sticks to, a routine. We all do better when we’re in our “comfort zone”. So, what is your comfort zone when it comes to exercise and fitness? Is it your 30 minute walk a few times a week – always the same route? Is it a couple of classes so you have the camaraderie of others? I’m issuing a challenge: Restart your exercise program, but get out of your comfort zone. Why? By doing something out of your regular routine, you will not only see physical changes in your body, but you will boost your self-confidence and your self-image. Let’s talk about the physical side first. It’s no secret that our bodies were designed for activity, not for sitting on the couch. Daily movement keeps us healthy and fit. Simply put, movement occurs when we contract our muscles. In order to contract, muscles need fuel, and they get that in the form of either fat or glucose. With low intensity exercise, we burn 95 percent fat and 5 percent glucose. Fat, though, is not stored in the muscles. The body has to bring it to the muscle through the circulation of the blood. Fit individuals utilize 12 LIFESTYLE october/november 2011

fats to a greater extent both at rest and during exercise as compared to unfit individuals. The more fit you are, the more efficient your circulation and the better a “fat burning machine” you will become. Low intensity aerobic training will build your muscles, heart and circulatory systems – turning you into a healthier individual. When you push your body a little harder you will start burning glucose in addition to fat. Your muscles need more oxygen getting to the blood, so your heart rate will go up – somewhere between 65 – 85% of its max. This is the point where you’re breathing harder, but still able to carry on a brief conversation. And why is this necessary? Studies have shown that regular bouts of intense aerobic exercise increase our metabolism (we burn more calories!) and make our bodies even more efficient and powerful. The longer and more intense the workout, the longer the metabolism will remain elevated after completing the workout. And not only do our bodies benefit, but our brains become more alert and functional. MRI’s performed on individuals working in this higher intensity zone have shown increased brain activity. And who couldn’t use that? So, back to my comfort zone challenge: Where do you see yourself on the exercise scale? Are you: At level 1. You do your 30 minute walk most days, but don’t push yourself to the increased heart rate level. At level 2. A couple of your weekly workouts include some increased intensity – getting you to the point of hard breathing. Or are you still trying to make yourself get off the couch and out the door? Wherever you are, take it to the next level!

GET ON A BIKE, SWIM LAPS, TRY AN ELLIPTICAL MACHINE. THERE IS NO DISPUTING THE FACT THAT A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT EXERCISES AND INTENSITIES DO MORE GOOD THAN A SINGLE, UNVARYING ROUTINE.

If walking is your passion, try to include hills in your walk, or add interval training to your walk. That is, walk at your normal speed for 2 minutes, then walk faster for 30 seconds. Repeat these intervals at least 5 times. If you don’t feel the increased intensity, you’re not walking fast enough! If you’re already at level 2, push yourself a bit farther. For example, add running to your walks in order to boost the intensity. Or add another type of cardio exercise. Get on a bike, swim laps, try an

elliptical machine. There is no disputing the fact that a variety of different exercises and intensities do more good than a single, unvarying routine. And the benefit is not just physical. We need to be mentally stimulated as well, or we won’t stick with it. Boredom sets in, and all of a sudden those exercise habits fall by the wayside. Will it be easy? No! Will it be worth it? Totally! Am I speaking from experience or just prescribing what I’ve read? In the last 7 years I’ve put myself out of my comfort zone more times than I dreamed possible, and all at an age when many people begin to just accept their circumstances. I changed my career path at age 52 and became a Personal Fitness Trainer. Was it difficult? Yes! Was it worth it? Definitely! To have a passion for a career and know that I have the potential to positively influence other lives is incredible. I began road biking less than 2 years ago, and have since ridden over 4,000 miles through the Texas Hill Country, France and Italy. Was it difficult? Yes – clip-in pedals and all! Was it worth it? The experiences can’t be duplicated! A comfort zone is important, but will it change and enrich your life? Probably not. You’re never too old to push yourself. Gain self confidence and become that person you always wished you could be!

A SNAP DECISION CAN BE

LIFE CHANGING.

TAKE THE CASE OF A

HOUSTON BANKER WHO ACCOMPANIED HIS FRIENDS TO A HORSE SALE AT

HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO ONE SATURDAY MORNING. A

THE

PRETTY FILLY CAME THROUGH AND CAUGHT HIS EYE.

BEFORE HE KNEW IT, HIS HAND FLEW UP TO BID ON HER, AND THE NEXT MOMENT SHE WAS HIS.

Mind you, this was a man who had ridden horses when he was twelve, but hadn’t been in a saddle for thirty years. He had nowhere to board the horse and was scheduled to leave for vacation the next day. Fortunately his dentist volunteered to keep her until the impulsive banker could figure out what he was going to do. To the banker’s surprise, his dentist friend sent the horse to a cutting horse trainer. “I’ll fall off!” he exclaimed when he found out what had happened. And sure enough he did. But after a series of mishaps, the banker found his new passion and recently was inducted into the National Cutting Horse Hall of Fame. “I did fall off,” explains Don Neuenschwander, “my first time out, I cut nine calves and fell off seven times.” This was only one of the many mishaps that happened to “Neuen,” as he came to be called, recounted in an entertaining book Cuttin’ Capers by author Gala Nettles, published in 1992 and reissued in 2011. And Cutter Sue, his first filly, would be just one of many horses Don would ride in shows all over the United States. Don is a lifetime VP of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, which raises over $15 million dollars for scholarships.

BETTER HALF A graduate of UT, Don worked as an accountant before entering the banking industry. Back in the 1970s there were many struggling banks in Texas. One of these he purchased and as wife

Kathy says, “He bought the bank and he got me with it!” She was an employee there and became his secretary. They got to know each other well before they married. She shared his love of travel and together they and their horses crisscrossed the country. Kathy, a gourmet cook, who has taken many cooking classes, including a ten-day course at the Capisano Wine & Culinary Institute in Italy, has always loved to entertain. She learned early on that when Don said he’d invited two or three couples for dinner she should plan for double that. An illustration of Don’s largesse is when they were at a horse show in Batesville, Mississippi. He told Kathy he’d invited eight people to dinner. She planned to make enough food to share leftovers with the horse show staff and wasn’t too worried. The menu consisted of link sausage appetizers, pork chops, potatoes au gratin, and banana pudding for dessert. Thirty-

two people showed up! “I felt like Jesus with the loaves and fishes!” Kathy exclaims, “But I made it work and everyone had a good time.”

THE NEXT GENERATION Don’s children are a source of pride for him and Kathy. Son Brody Neuenschwander is a world renowned calligrapher and artist. “I named him Brody James after the Stanford football player,” Don says, “I thought he might want to drop our hard to pronounce last name, but he didn’t.” The name is Swiss and means “newcomer in town.” Brody went to Princeton University and then received a PhD in art history at Courtauld Institute in England. He and his wife, Nadine and their daughter, Clara, live in Brugges, Belgium. He is the official illuminator for both the Belgian and British royal houses, and created the scroll that Princess Diana presented to John Gielgud upon his knighthood. Brody’s website is worth

a look for the amazing artwork he’s created for film, stage and public installations: www. brodyneuenschwander.com Elder daughter Caron owns LaMay Designs in Houston and younger daughter Christi is the Chief Development Officer of Genesys Works, a non-profit that enables inner-city high school students to break through barriers and discover through meaningful work experience that they can succeed as professionals in the corporate world. Don and Kathy are selling their Houston home but plan to keep an apartment there so they can stay close to the children and grandchildren. In addition to the two daughters and one sonin-law, Rob, they have two granddaughters, Phoebe and Loulie, in Houston. Caron’s older daughter, Sophia, is at college in Florida. “You know how it is,” says Kathy, “they’re so busy, if we want to see them, we had better go there.”

CHARITABLE WORKS Don retired from cutting competitions but he and Kathy are still active in another of their passions: the MyFriends Foundation, which Don started in 1972 to help abused, abandoned and traumatized children. They are active fundraisers. The non-profit is run solely by volunteers. Money is raised to support other small non-profits that reach children in need. One of the projects that is most dear to their hearts is the Teddy Bear Program. “At first we thought, how can teddy bears help kids,” says Kathy. “But then I spoke to a police officer who told me about when he responded to a domestic violence call. The dad was taken to jail, the mom was taken to the hospital and the child was in a terrible state. The police officer offered the child a teddy bear and that little girl just ran into his arms.” MyFriends has also been a supporter of K’Star, an emergency home for abused children in Kerrville. The next major fundraiser for MyFriends will be held at the Bell Tower in Houston on October 14. – visit www.myfriendsfoundation.org for more information. In honor of all the work Don has done for the MyFriends Foundation, a Presidential Endowed Scholarship was established at The University of Texas McCombs School of Business by the MyFriends Board and several of his friends.

INCA RED One of Don’s favorite cars is a 1981 Mercedes SL380. Although the manufacturer’s color of the car was called Inca Red, Don was very excited that it looked 20 LIFESTYLE october/november 2011

UT burnt orange. Being a die-hard Longhorn fan, the color makes sense. “When he bleeds, his blood is orange!” says Kathy. Their lovely home is decorated in a western motif – sculptures by Jim Reno, a pencil drawing of a cow skull by Brody, Don’s last saddle, and an impressive display of silver belt buckles from Don’s cutting horse wins. In Europe Brody found a powder horn used by one of Napoleon’s soldiers, and a brass boot stirrup from a Spanish conquistador, which is surprisingly small. Nestled in a corner of the living room are two guitars. As an adult Don decided he wanted to learn to play. At the time, the bank he owned had an airplane and limo used for depositors who had more than $100,000 in the bank. Channel 2 news in Houston decided to do a story on the bank. When they discovered that Don came to work in jeans, they dubbed him “The Guitar Playing Banker.”

CALLING COMANCHE TRACE HOME Don has always been partial to the Hill Country. A photograph of him riding a cutting horse hangs in their living room. “That arena stood where Rock Barn is today” he says. The Neuenschwanders rented a vacation home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for six weeks each summer, for ten years. When they learned the property was going to be sold and developed into condos, they decided to search for another place to vacation in the summer. “It was between water and golf,” Kathy remembers. “While we were trying to decide, we

came to visit our friends here. Don loved the golf course and the pros were so nice and friendly.” “We bought a lot and were going to build,” says Don, “but then we saw the Villas and they had everything we wanted.” “We looked at the Villa for the first time on 7-7-07 and it was unit

#7, so it was meant to be,” says Kathy. Kathy has made many friends at Comanche Trace, through golf and Mah Jongg. A few years ago, for Don’s birthday, she surprised him with a performance by international country star Gary P. Nunn. They’d met him in Houston and became fast friends. Gary P. has performed

several times at Comanche Trace as a guest of the Neuenschwanders. Don and Kathy agree, “It’s the many friends and the fun we have with them that make Comanche Trace such a special place to live!”

DAYTRIP

ROCKIN ’ AT THE GET ROCKIN’

By Paul F. Schoenfeld

109 N. Llano St., Fredericksburg, TX 866 349-6688 830 997-7625 rockboxtheater.com

THE SITUATION:

You have

friends or family coming in soon to enjoy your hospitality and the Hill Country and you want to be sure they have a really good time. Or, perhaps you are a little bored and would like to put some excitement in your life with an evening out.

THE SOLUTION: Go to the Rockbox Theater in downtown Fredericksburg. 32 LIFESTYLE october/november 2011

The resident cast of top-notch professional performers will entertain you with their terrific musical talent and hilarious comedy. It is family friendly fun that everyone, young or old, can enjoy. If you truly enjoy the golden oldies music of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s then the Rockbox cast will take you back to those good old days with their right-on impressions and costumes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tammy Wynette, James Brown, and other departed greats of past decades. Mix in their renditions of the music of Willie Nelson, ZZ Top, Bette Midler, the Everly Brothers, Sonny and Cher, the Supremes, and many other memorable artists and you will have an evening to remember. And to think it is all here in the beautiful Hill Country, just a short drive up Highway 16 to Fredericksburg.

One thing that really makes the Rockbox performances so attractive is that they never repeat the same performance from one week to the next. The cast is so extremely talented and with an apparently endless repertoire of songs that their lineup of “visiting legends” changes every week, meaning you could attend with friends and family and then return the following week with outof-towners and see a totally different presentation. Several Kerrville residents report that repeat visitors often request a return to the Rockbox because they had such a good time before and know they will again be treated to an exciting but different show from what they had previously enjoyed. Outstanding entertainment at reasonable ticket prices, with four weekend performances. The Rock-

box is a must see for you and your family, friends, and visitors. Paul and Ellen Schoenfeld moved to Comanche Trace in February 2009 to be close to their daughter, Sharon, and her family. They enjoy traveling and spending time with two grandsons when Paul is not on the golf course and Ellen is not involved with the Kerrville Republican Women's Club and St. Peter's

Episcopal Church . After discovering the Rockbox Theater even before moving to Kerrville, the Schoenfelds attend performances frequently each year.

Use the appropriate water level and load size on the washing machine when doing laundry and/or use a High-Efficiency washer. Make sure the dishwasher is fully loaded to maximize the dishes cleaned per cycle. Rinse dishes, vegetables and fruits in a filled basin, rather than under running water. To cut down on water waste, fill plastic bottles with water (don’t leave airspace, or add sand to keep it from floating), screw the lids on, and put them in your toilet tank (away from the operating mechanisms). This home sits on the highest residential street in Comanche Trace, commanding a view of not only Comanche Trace but the surrounding hill country. It is simply breathtaking. There are so many vantage points to enjoy the view; I meet myself getting to all of them at least once a day. There is a large pool and spa that can be enjoyed by just relaxing or exercising a little, more by actually swimming in it. I can sit in the spa and survey the countryside while I drift into a state of serenity in the soothing bubbles. Where has this spot been all of my life? The cabana is just a few steps away so I can grab a freshly iced drink. If it is too chilly for the pool, I have a choice of two different second story verandas where I get a bird’s eye view of this habit forming hill country. It reminds me so much of that summer in Tuscany. I can even see the golfers enjoying the Championship Course at the bottom of the hill. I have tried to finish reading this novel for book club tomorrow, but there is just too much going on with those golfers. Sometimes I fall asleep in the peace and quiet. Either way, I am not sure I will be finished

with this book before the book club meets. Oh well, there is always such a lively discussion I will find out what happened from my friends. I am sure they read it. I love to throw parties and entertain my large circle of family and friends. I have never had a home that is so suited to happy gatherings. The granite bar in the game room is simply outrageously gorgeous! Both the powder room and the staircase in the game room are very unique. There is plenty of space for a pool table, a shuffle board table, and of course a great table for card games. The guest room is truly a spot no one will ever want to leave. It is huge, with one of those private verandas I was telling you about, and has a giant shower, two separate dressing areas and a huge closet. There is even a study if someone has to catch up on work or write the next novel for me to try to read. The main house has glorious views from the great room, family room and my master suite. In fact, there are two master bedroom suites in the main house so I can have my son or daughter stay here or

one of my very best friends right in the house with me for those long chats I so love. I can not think of one more thing to add to my kitchen – first of all, it is a beautiful kitchen with a large dining room just outside of it – the kitchen has spectacular granite counter tops, a six burner range, large refrigerator and the coolest pantry under the stairwell --- it just keeps going and going. I can cook with my husband and my friends – there is a great counter where others can sit and enjoy watching us work. I love the Tuscan style and feel of this house and think anyone who loves to entertain in a grand place that is so meant for loving life would love it too. We would be happy to show it to you if you have that special zest for life and love to share it. This house will keep the sparkle going.
