tmea distinguished a dm inistr ator spotlight In the November issue, we announced the opportunity to nominate your campus or district upper-level school administrator to receive a TMEA Distinguished Administrator Award. This award program is intended to recognize school administrators who have been instrumental in the many successes present in schools across our state. Starting with this installment, we will feature a group of administrators from the submitted nominations. With the many challenges facing music educators today, it is refreshing to read these stories of supportive school administrators. To nominate your administrator for this recognition, go to www.tmea.org/adminaward.

G A IL A N DER SON, PR I NCIPA L Lamar Elementary School, Wichita Falls ISD Nominated by Rebecca Glasgow My principal truly understands the importance of music in the complete education of a student. For many years she has encouraged monthly school-wide music assemblies where the whole school comes together to sing and move. Every day you will hear classical or world music over the speakers in our hallways. She ensures I am able to attend the TMEA convention every year by covering some of the expenses with school funds. Mrs. Anderson fully supports our 80-voice choir and makes sure we have what we need to succeed. We have an afterschool guitar club that meets once a week. This program has become so popular that we do not have enough guitars for all of the students wishing to enroll. This year she offered to sponsor a student and paid for the student’s guitar, case, and music so the student could participate. She is also supportive when there are parent issues and always listens to my side before making a judgment. She believes what I do matters— what more could a music teacher want? She truly gets it. I owe twelve years of gratitude to this dynamo of a woman, and I have no desire to teach anywhere else! S T E V E T R OX EL , PR I NCIPA L Jane A. Hambric School (K–8), Socorro ISD Nominated by John McQuien I am probably one of the most blessed fine arts teachers in my district. Steve Troxel, along with his four assistant administrators, has been an outstanding supporter and advocate of the arts at our school. Mr. Troxel has a background in theater and band, so he has a fundamental understanding of the value fine arts provide students. My choir program is a healthy 195 students strong, and because he believes music is an essential need for a well-rounded student, he has implemented a guitar class (which I really enjoy teaching). Just this year he also started a general music class simply because, as he stated, “I want our eighth graders who may not be sure about performing to not only have an opportunity to learn about music, but be able to receive a fine arts credit where they may not have had the opportunity to otherwise do so.” Any time a student hasn’t been able to pay for fees associated with contests,

Mr. Troxel has always made room in his budget to accommodate them. I am truly blessed to work with him, especially for all the insight he has shared with me during his visits to my classroom. D ON FA L L I N, S U PER I N T E N DE N T Tenaha ISD Nominated by Christopher Conway Don Fallin has not only protected the fine arts programs in our school, he actively promotes them in the community. He sees the importance of music education in the lives of our children and wants them to be the most well-rounded individuals possible. Beginning in 2005, he implemented a plan that required all fifth and sixth graders to be in band. This allows them to develop musical skills for two years before they have the option to choose to go forward with music. Since that time, the Tenaha band has seen tremendous growth. It has grown to a point that the band staff now includes three directors—all because of Mr. Fallin’s dedication to the arts. This year he started an elementary music program, as well as a young scholar’s program where students can learn to play guitar. Every student in the elementary program is provided a recorder and book. Young scholars are provided a guitar, book, and lessons. Each band member is provided an instrument—all at no cost to the students or their families. Mr. Fallin is not only supportive of the fine arts faculty but the students participating as well. He frequents the band hall to check on the students and makes sure they have everything they need. He never misses a performance, which says it all. R Y A N S T EEL E , S U PER I N T E N DE N T Westphalia ISD Nominated by Margaret Cooper Mr. Steele has made it possible for every K–8 student in the district to have music classes. When there could have been many other uses for it, he had the old administration building remodeled into a music room. Mr. Steele visits every music class, not only to evaluate instruction but also to encourage the students. He even played clarinet with the sixth grade band and let the students give him pointers. He believes the music activities in which students participate help with their overall development Southwestern Musician | January 2012 21

Artists believe in Yamaha. “I play Yamaha because it’s the sound I’ve been looking for. Playing in venues large and small all over the world, I can always find the right sound. I thoroughly rely on the Yamaha SV-250 Pro for my electric playing. Yamaha thinks about the musician when it comes to electric violin design. I love this instrument!”

January 12 to guarantee you have a seat for this incredible musical offering by this world renowned boys choir. To purchase tickets go to www.tmea.org/convention. The 2012 TMEA convention will feature thirteen choirs that will present inspiring performances. Take the opportunity in February to hear these outstanding choirs and to watch their directors at work. Our other performing choirs were featured in the November issue. Cypress Falls HS Varsity Men’s Choir Deidre Douglas, Director Cypress Falls HS is one of 10 high schools in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in Houston. The Cypress Falls HS choral program consists of approximately 200 students in grades 9–12 in five performing groups. The Varsity Men’s Choir is a combined group of dedicated musicians who participate in numerous other activities on and off campus. They consistently receive UIL Sweepstakes awards and have been awarded best-in-class at music festivals. Many individuals in this choir have been members of the Region 27 AllRegion choir and have consistently been selected to the All-State Choirs. Most have received superior ratings at UIL Solo and Ensemble contest as well. The Cypress Falls HS choral program is under the direction of Deidre Douglas. She is in her 24th year of teaching and her fifth year as head choir director at Cypress Falls HS. Within the past five years, under her direction, the Cypress Falls choir program has continued to grow in number and remain committed to a high standard of musical excellence. Douglas is a past “Spotlight Teacher” in Cypress Fairbanks and is actively sought around the state as a clinician and judge. She is assisted by Lelah Loftin. Flower Mound HS Jaguar Chorale Mark Rohwer, Director The Jaguar Chorale is the flagship organization of the Flower Mound HS choral program. The group sings a variety of music styles, from pop and jazz to concert literature. Major works performed include Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, the Requiem, op. 9, by Maurice Durufle, and both the Requiem, K. 626, and the Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, K. 339, by W. A. Mozart. Students in the Chorale have been active participants in solo and

ensemble contests and have been selected to All-Region and All-State Choirs. Graduates have gone on to successful music study at universities in Texas and nationwide. The Jaguar Chorale is a consistent UIL Sweepstakes Award recipient, has received awards in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and received performance honors in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Houston, and San Antonio. In 2007, the choir was invited to perform at the TMEA convention, and in 2008 the choir performed at the convention of the Southwestern American Choral Directors Association. The Jaguar Chorale is proud to be a part of a music program that has received national recognition from The Grammy Foundation on four occasions. The Chorale has performed in the Texas State Capitol, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, Boston’s Old North Church, the World War II Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., the Salzburg Cathedral, the Barcelona Cathedral, and the Vatican. The Chorale has toured Europe and Latin America.

Marcus HS Varsity Treble Choir Jason Dove, Director Marcus HS, a TEA Recognized school, is a comprehensive senior high school serving approximately 3,200 students in grades 9 through 12. Marcus is part of the Lewisville ISD located in Denton county approximately 35 minutes north of downtown Dallas. Opening in 1981, Marcus is currently celebrating its 30th year of excellence. Marcus utilizes accelerated block scheduling; each school day includes four 90-minute classes. The Varsity Treble Choir at Marcus meets during the school day every fall semester. During the spring semester, the Varsity Treble Choir meets separately and combines with the Varsity Men’s Choir to form the Marcus Chorale.
