RUSSELL AND CHERRE ATTENDING ONE OF THE MANY FUND RAISERS THEY HELP SPONSOR.
BY MARIE COOK
E
very so often we find that certain someone. A person who works tirelessly behind the scene to accomplish those tasks which grow our cities, towns and communities; making them a better place in which to live. Someone who sets the stage for things to happen and at times, donates not only their time and energy but also helps with funding community projects that otherwise might take years to accomplish or, without their help, might never materialize.

“A behind-the-scenes person. Most people don’t realize how much he does and continues to do for his community. He is a very generous person and believes in sharing his good fortune with others. He has a very caring attitude towards children and young adults and a commitment to education. By providing opportunities for them to experience the world at large; providing field trips to the State Capitol for high school students, live theater performances and many other programs he’s helped start, he believes in giving our youth opportunities to see firsthand the many opportunities that await them.” Texas State Representative Geanie W. That certain someone in Port Lavaca just happens to be Russell Cain. Just prior to junior high school, Russell arrived in Port Lavaca with this family. The year was 1956 and his father had taken a job at the new Alcoa plant. Moving from the Midwest, the family of six would soon settle in, quickly becoming an integral part of the community. Russell attended school and would graduate from Calhoun County High School home of the Fighting Sandcrabs. Upon graduation Russell attended college, earning his BBA from Texas A&M Kingsville (then Texas A&I University). “Far and above the nicest person I’ve ever met. Russell always does what he can to make things work out for everyone.” Jan Regan, Friend Since Junior High School From the beginning Russell Cain has been community minded. At a time when most young college graduates were leaving their hometowns for the big cities, Russell chose to stay in Port Lavaca. The simple reason being – because he loved and felt passionate about his hometown. In 1972 he went into the real estate business and in just 2 years became the Broker/Owner of Russell Cain Real Estate with offices in Port Lavaca and Port O’Connor, Texas.
RUSSELL AND CHERRE’S GRANDCHILDREN.
Always actively involved in the real estate business he has served on the Port Lavaca Calhoun County Board of Realtors in the positions of Director and Past President, garnering many awards from both the Texas and National Associations of Realtors. In 2000, Russell was one of only 25 people selected as “Most Influential Citizens of Calhoun County in the 20th Century”! “No one gives more or cares more about the community than Russell.” Connie Hunt, Republican Party
ONE OF THE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOMES IN PORT LAVACA.
A member of Grace Episcopal Church for over 30 years, Russell donated 5 lots to HABITAT for Humanity and secured the money needed to build the first of five homes. That my friends, is only the tip of this man’s generosity toward the community he loves. “Very community minded…charitable. He’s always working with various organizations.” Joyce Rhyne, Dolphin Talk Throughout his life Russell Cain has given back. An avid golfer, he has been chairman of many fund raising golf tournaments benefiting the American Cancer Society, Rotary, Gulf Bend Center, Calhoun County Work Activity Center, the Calhoun County Humane Society and many others. A fan not only of golf, Russell and his wife Cherre are animal lovers, with all of the family pets (dogs and cats) being rescue animals. Using his 65th birthday as an excuse, Russell held a golf scramble tournament which would benefit the Calhoun County

Some people might not be aware of this but Russell is no stranger to the theater. While in high school at Calhoun County High he participated in several stage productions. The historic Main Street Theater in Port Lavaca, which had been a thriving concern in the 1930’s and 40’s had fallen into disrepair. As many of the commercial centers moved away from the downtown area in the 50’s and 60’s, the charming theater was deserted and remained empty for 30 years. Russell purchased the theater in 1983 and through his fundraising efforts, the landmark structure was refurbished.
Serving as a director, president and chairman of the Port Lavaca Main Street Association for 14 years Russell also headed up the establishment of the Fay Bauer Sterling Park in the historic downtown district of Port Lavaca.
On September 29, 1994, the Gala Grand Opening celebrated the resurrection of live theater in Port Lavaca. Russell’s high school drama teacher Pat Jurek directed the live performance of “On the Night of January 16th” which included a cast of 24 people. Russell was there as a member of the cast, in which he played the role of a detective. The new theater boasted a new stage, refurbished balcony, and 263 seats. With the theater once again

“A really GOOD guy.” Billy Bauer 1st National Bank With all his community projects what’s Russell like behind the scenes? Perhaps this could be better answered by another question: What’s the one thing that can make a man better? A great woman! Married to Cherre Walker Cain on September 14, 1996, they have been described as a “match made in heaven”. Honored in February 2013 as “Most Admired Couples” Cherre and Russell are true partners in every sense of the word. Moving from Kerrville after their marriage many know Cherre from her gourmet food manufacturing company “BY REQUEST”. Selling the company in 1991 to be part of the publicly traded

endeavor of Silverado Foods, she was nominated by Merrill Lynch in 1994 to Entrepreneur Magazine for her major contribution in helping six small Minority Businesses create a market for their products. Cherre’s expertise is creating a market for any product! She was also the owner of four Ella Belles Boutiques which sold in 2008. Like Russell, Cherre serves as a board member to various State and local organizations such as the Calhoun County Historical Commission, of which she was past Chairman. She passionately promotes Economic Development and Heritage tourism throughout South Texas and was named “Women of the Year 2000” for Calhoun County. Cherre feels her best talent is networking people to projects that she and Russell have, and continue, to do just that. Definitely a match made in heaven. “If you were to look up the phrase community servant in a directory for Port Lavaca / Calhoun County, Russell Cain’s picture would be next to it. He is one of the most generous individuals in this County and I have seen articles about him in other places in the Golden Crescent describing his unselfish benevolence. He has a positive “can do” attitude about everything and that is the main reason he is so busy; everyone wants him on their committee or project. He is passionate about Port Lavaca and promotes our City every chance he gets. We are fortunate to have a man as generous as he living in our City and promoting Port Lavaca and the surrounding area as actively as he does. And I’m sure I can speak for anyone that knows him and say that anyone would be proud to call him friend”. Bob Turner, Port Lavaca City Manager While researching for this story and in speaking to community leaders about Russell Cain, finding out what they thought about him, I couldn’t help but be impressed. I found him to be a hard-working, dedicated, compassionate and generous individual. I have only these words to offer Russell: Well done…very well done indeed! O

Historical Homes The Texas Historical Marker for the Holman House reads: Spanish-American War Veteran And Matagorda County Judge (1908-1914) William Shields Holman And His Wife Louise (Kaulbach) Built This House In 1908-09. Designed By A. W. Large And Constructed By Contractor H. Speckles, The House Is An Excellent Example Of Queen Anne Styling. It Features Asymmetrical Composition, An Elaborate Roofscape, Corner Tower, Wraparound Porch, And Varying Textures On Its Wall Surfaces. It Remained In The Holman Family Until 1978.
One of the most photographed homes in Matagorda County, construction of this Victorian jewel was started in 1908 and completed in 1909. Built for Judge and Mrs. William Shields Holman, the home is 3-stories in height with a 2-story carriage house in back and occupies a quarter of the city block. The house contains 14 rooms, 3 porches, 3 balconies, an expansive attic, an upstairs hallway, ample closets and 3 original fireplaces. The exterior of the home is of Louisiana cypress weatherboarding, the interior of pine, with wideplanked pine floors. Metal shingles cover the sharplypitched roof, on which lightning rods with ornamental glass balls are mounted. While on a business trip, Judge Holman spotted 2 carloads of Louisiana cypress on a railroad siding. He bought it on the spot for his new home. Underground
concrete blocks are anchor-bolted to solid pillars of red brick, 3-feet in height which were designed to support the house above then recurrent floodwaters. These also provided strength against hurricane force winds and would provide a drying/crawl space under the house. The front entrance of the home faces east and is protected by a large brick-and-nine-columned porch which was designed to catch morning light and gulf breezes. A large turret covers the southeast corner of the porch, with a multi-windowed tower on the third floor above. An enjoyable balcony is above the main entrance and a dormer on the roof above. The front entrance is stunning with leaded glass above ornamented pine panels on either side of and above the heavy relief-decorated pine and oval plate glass front door. The original hand-turned door bell is still in operation on the panel to the left.

The Texas Historical Marker for the Moore House reads: Dolph Phenias (D.P.) Moore (1852-1928) Moved To Matagorda County In 1869. He Married Louise Wendel In 1879 And Together They Reared Ten Children. A Successful Merchant, Rancher, And Landowner, Moore Sold The Land On Which The Town Of Bay City Was Platted In 1894. He Moved His Family To Bay City That Year. Local Contractors Hatchett & Large Built This 15-Room Queen Anne Style House For The Moores In 1902. A Prominent Civic Leader, Moore Was Instrumental In Bringing Railroads To Bay City And In The Development Of The Area’s Rice Industry. He Donated Land For Cedarvale Cemetery And Park. The Moore home with its’ elegant proportioning and fine detail combine to make this well-designed structure one of the finest late Victorian residences in the city. Built in 1902 by builders Hatchett and Large, the land was purchased from David Swickheimer cofounder of Bay City in 1894. This late Victorian 2-story is a 4-bay wood-frame residence which features a columned and balustraded front porch and gallery. It has a projecting gable roofed section with bay and a small Palladian window in the gable. The house has two fireplaces with grill work in both the music and dining rooms. Containing both front and rear stairs there are also porches on both the first and second floors. Beautiful leaded glass windows allow for light in the living room, with a frosted and etched glass front door catching light at the entry. Located on the first floor are both dining and breakfast rooms, two
kitchens, bedroom and a bath. A living and music room complete the first floor. Boasting five bedrooms on the 2nd floor, there is also a parlor and bath. A closed stairway leads to the attic with a ladder extending to the widow’s walk. The first cement sidewalk in the city extends from the house to the street and a picket fence enclosed the six lots. Originally, an attached building held the acetylene gas plant, as gas was used until the house was wired for electricity in 1903. Above the gas house was an octagon-shaped structure holding a Cyprus cistern. The cistern was fed from rain gutters on the roof. The yard contained a windmill/ tank, and a large 2-story barn with stalls for horses, corn crib and hay storage along with a room for the carriage. Other buildings included a chicken house, brick sweet potato house, pens for the livestock and a one-room servant’s house.
The Texas Historical Marker for the M.S. and Cora Alice Perry House reads: An Architectural Hybrid Incorporating Colonial Revival And Queen Anne Style Elements, The M.S. M.S. and Cora Alice Perry House cont.
Mordello Stephen Perry (M.S.) was born in 1872 at Peach Point Plantation in Brazoria County. He was also the grand-nephew of Stephen F. Austin. Cora Alice Perry, his wife, was born in 1883 in Colorado County, Texas and they had four children. The Perry Family acquired 3 adjoining lots in 1906 for $900.00 where they began to build their home. The family moved into the house unfinished in November 1917 and completed work one year later.
were kept by M.S. in the loft of the barn and there were gardens with citrus trees on the southeast part of the property. Shortly after the death of her husband Mrs. Perry moved to Big Springs Ranch with her children. She sold the house in 1943.
The house’s layered boards are built with one vertical and one horizontal. Using seven nails where normally four were sufficient, the house was stuccoed with metal lathe and concrete. The roof was cedar shingles.
From 1943-1970, the home was owned by three different people and rented out to various tenants. First, as a boarding house and later divided into four apartments. In 1971 the house was purchased by Eddie and Jessica Jecmenek. It was in dire need of repair and major renovation. The chimneys and widow’s walk on the roof had been completely destroyed by a tropical storm.
George Schultz was the builder and the Perrys were the designers. No architect or contractor was used in either the design or the construction. The downstairs rooms all opened to each other which were designed for entertaining. A hot water tank was built into the wall next to the fireplace in the library. This supplied hot water to the upstairs bathrooms. The kitchen boasted a double sink with drain board. The third floor was the children’s play area with plans made to someday have a ballroom there. Sadly with the death of M.S. in 1919 the third floor ballroom was never completed.
The Jecmeneks were very active in the city’s historical community and thoroughly researched the house before attempting restoration. Carefully studying early photos their goal was to restore everything as accurately as possible. The partitions for the apartments were removed with the original ceilings being cleaned and painted. The dining, living, music rooms and library were restored in Victorian décor with vintage wallpaper.
The house was completely rewired and a new roof was put on. The front porch, which had been removed at some time, was faithfully restored; the hardwood floors all refinished and the doors restored to their original positions. This beautiful house in the hands of a family, who cares, has preserved its beauty and once again is opened for special occasions, just as it was almost one-hundred years ago.
The garage was located in the northwest corner of the property adjacent to the alley. The garage was large enough for two cars. In the southwest portion of the property a barn was constructed. The mules used by LeTulle Mercantile for deliveries were kept in the barn along with the family’s horse. Pigeons

If you’re falling in love with all things Texas then you’ll really love a visit to the place it all began – King Ranch
What is King Ranch? King Ranch and the King family are part of the myth and mystique of Texas. Numerous stories and novelizations abound with the fascinating history of the ranch, the family and indeed, Texas itself. Located in South Texas between Corpus Christi and Brownsville, King Ranch is one of the largest ranches in the world. Founded in 1853 by Captain Richard King the ranch is 825,000 acres and includes portions of six Texas counties. It’s also larger than the state of Rhode Island and at one point was more than a million acres! The ranch was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. If you want to know Texas and the mythic past of King Ranch, a trip to the King Ranch Museum is a must. The museum is a great

Have you ever seen the Running W brand? This brand has been recognized around the world as “property of King Ranch”. No one knows for sure but it’s been said it represents one of the many diamondback rattlesnakes found on the ranch. Others suggest it’s the horns of a Texas Longhorn bull, while still others interpret it as a constant flowing wave pattern, uniting the past with the present and continuing forward into the future. Whatever the truth may be, the brand is practical and good looking. Fast and easy to heal, it foils cattle rustlers and grows with the proud animal bearing it. King Ranch is tied to cowboys and cattle. It begins with the loyal Kineños, the ranch workers. Captain King not only brought cattle up from Mexico, but an entire village of Mexican cowboys who would become his fiercely loyal, Kineños, translation: the king’s men. Antique carriages and vintage cars, including El Kineño, a custom designed Buick Eight hunting car built for Congressman R. M. Kleberg, Sr., in 1949 by General Motors is also on permanent display. Also featured as a permanent exhibit, is a sculpture of Mrs. Henrietta King (Captain King’s wife) and her son-in-law Robert J. You’ll be able to watch an excellent video about the history of King Ranch which takes you on a virtual tour of the amazing main residence. Food vendors will be on site for those with an appetite and plenty of something wet to wash it all down. The Texas stars will be burning bright when music favorite Roger Creager takes the stage with special musical guests, Jason Boland & the Stragglers, along with Reckless Kelly, Bri Bagwell and the Brandon Key Band on Saturday. Opening night features Charlie Robison and Bri Bagwell kicking off the Music Fest Friday, June 19th. Preregistration has started for the fishing tournament and music fest. Concert only tickets are $10 Friday and $20 Saturday or get a two day pass for $25. Preregistration for the fishing tournament is $100, $120 after May 25th and includes entrance into both days’ concert. Visit their website at http://texasgamewarden.com/tournaments/ region-x-2015-fishing-tournament/ for ticket locations or you can purchase at the door. Friday night’s event consists of tournament registration, live music by Charlie Robison and Bri Bagwell, both silent and live auctions, raffle and tournament guidelines. Auction items can include guided fishing trips, overnight cabin stays near Baffin Bay and management buck hunts.
By 1895 it had become clear that some regulatory office was needed to control the depletion caused by overfishing; in response to this need the legislature established the office of Fish and Oyster Commissioner. In 1907 the legislature also gave the commissioner the responsibility for hunting regulations, and the name of the office was changed to Game, Fish, and Oyster Commissioner. The first hunting licenses were sold in 1909. In 1919 the state had only six game wardens to enforce regulations, and many counties continued to claim exemptions; the number of wardens was increased to forty-five by 1923 and to eighty by 1928.
On Saturday, registered fishers will begin casting at 6am, finishing at 4pm and the awards ceremony follows at 5:15pm. Winner of the youth division, which is for ages 12 and under, will receive a lifetime hunting and fishing license! How cool is that? Proceeds from the TGWA Fishing Tournament and Music Fest go to youth outreach programs; toward getting local youth involved in being active outdoors. TEXAS GAME WARDENS ASSOCIATION HISTORY & FACTS In 1883 over one hundred counties in Texas claimed exemption from all game laws.

The Texas Game and Fish Commission merged with the State Parks Board in 1963 to form the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. For more than a generation, the Texas Game Warden Association (TGWA) has introduced young Texans to the beauty and value of our land and wildlife. TGWA’s members have devoted millions of hours, as well as funding, to educate more than 300,000 boys and girls. Natural role models, Game Wardens are uniquely qualified professionals teaching outdoor skills to youth hungry for one-on-one relationships and for handson experience with the outdoors. Their members are made up of Game Wardens, concerned citizens, landowners, and businesses that share a commitment in practicing conservation for future generations by preserving the rich heritage and wildlife of Texas. Texas Game Wardens are widely recognized as the best-trained corps of conservation officers in the country. They carry on a proud tradition that began at the turn of the 20th century when the Texas Legislature passed the first game laws to protect the Lone Star State. Since then, Texas Game Wardens have dedicated themselves to protecting the state’s natural resources for the benefit of our children and grandchildren. The Texas Game Wardens Association is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization which is dedicated to teaching the youth of Texas how to enjoy fishing, hunting and the outdoors safely and wisely. Their motto is “Conservation for Future Generations”. The outdoor experience available to future generations needs to be one of quality. It is up to all of us to ensure that. The annual Texas Game Warden Fishing Tournament and Music Fest event has grown each year so if you’re still thinking about how to spend Father’s Day, better get your tickets early because they’re expecting quite a crowd this year. And don’t forget, this year’s Fishing Tournament and Music Fest is once again being held in the great town of Fulton at the Fulton Harbor Park. What a Father’s day Weekend this will be - it’s going to be one heck of a party so don’t miss out! But that’s not all. There’s fun and games for the ENTIRE family! How would ye like to be on a Treasure Hunt? Arrr it’s a fact it is. Tis treasure all around. Treasure Trove Booths and even a Pirate Boat Parade! Captain Hook’s Water Adventures is Barnacle Bill’s favorite and he’ll also be taking part in the Flag Competition and the Shrimp Gumbo Cook-Off and Tasting! Arrr...tis makin me one eye tear up just thinking about it all. Why there’s even a Winery for those wishing for a bit finer type of grog. The Palacios Pirate Festival is for EVERYONE and the proceeds are funded back into the community by way of The Palacios Community Hub. The Hub’s mission is strengthening families through literacy and community service. The Hub provides Palacios with a Community Service Center, Early Learning Initiative, Youth Opportunity Center, and Adult/Workforce Preparation. The Hub offers services and programs ‘from twinkle to wrinkle’ and proudly served over 1700 individuals in 2014. The Hub accomplishes its mission and goals through committees and a dedicated staff. Committees are work units of the organization, and make full use of the time, expertise and commitment of its board members and community volunteers to address issues and achieve goals. Since Sept. 2014, over 260 teens have participated in Teen Center Activities (decreasing juvenile delinquency), monthly Hub Kid’s Club draws quite a crowd, and numerous adults are actively engaged in English as a Second Language, GED, and computer literacy classes. The Hub will be serving even more students this
year with the start of the Hub’s Home Builder’s Institute at the Palacios Marine Education Center. The Community Service Center aims to ensure that Palacios has a ‘go-to’ place where community members can access information, activities, services and resources. The Early Learning Initiative is established to ensure that all children enter kindergarten ready to learn and are ready on grade level by third grade. The Youth Opportunity Center promotes teen development while reducing juvenile delinquency to ensure a positive and productive future. And, the Adult Learning and Workforce Development programs empower adults with the skills needed to be better equipped to enter the workforce or obtain more adequate employment. Apart from the fun our whole community will have in participating in the festival it is also designed for two important reasons: (1) To address the summer slide – the fall back in learning that happens to our children over the summer months when they are out of school – we need to heave ho and keep them on track! And, (2) to raise booty for year round Hub programs to help children and their families in areas of education, workforce development and wellness. Looks like the pirate booty will be going for a great and worthy cause! So ye scurvy scallywags better drag your sorry keesters out t’join in the fun at the Palacios Pirate Festival or ye’ll be mighty sorry! For more information on the Palacios Pirate (361) 972-9990. ✯

Annual Patty Aragon Green Chile Classic The green chilies are roasting by noon and don’t miss the Patty Aragon Green Chile Classic held during the Chili Cha Cha. Stop by and taste a variety of green chile - both vegetarian and with meat. What better way to round out the day then to enjoy live music, cold beer and great food? If it’s hot you can cool off in the San Juan River or relax under the park trees while the chilies cook and the music rocks. Much in the same way that Easterners equate the smell of pressed apples with the coming of fall, South westerners know its autumn by the smell of roasting green chilies, usually the Hatch variety from New Mexico, but sometimes Big Jims, which are commonly grown around Grand Junction. The Annual Patty Aragon Green Chile Classic will offer up more than $600 in prize money for non-professional cooks and some pretty sweet trophies and bragging rights for commercial entries. This is just a sampling of all there is to do in Pagosa. The area is home to a variety of art galleries, live theatres, museums and cultural activities. Explore ancient civilizations, Western heritage, deep history and amazing artisans throughout the year. Continuing to grow as an art community, the town even has their own repertory theater. “Curtains Up Pagosa” puts on plays throughout the year. So…what are YOU waiting for? What is the Texas Water Safari? This safari is run with “man power”. The primary requirement is a boat powered only by human muscle. Racers must take all food and equipment needed with them, receiving only water and ice along the way. The Texas Water Safari is a 264.65 mile marathon canoe racing adventure which starts from the headwaters of the San Marcos River at Aquarena Springs, San Marcos and finishes in Seadrift just a few miles from Port Lavaca. Wednesday, June 17, at 1pm marks the 100-hour deadline for crossing the finish line. Most of the competitors don’t enter the Safari intending to win. Their main goal is crossing the finish line in Seadrift and earning the coveted Texas Water Safari patch, thus joining the elite group to have competed and completed the tough 264.65-mile course. Be aware that the term “tough” doesn’t even begin to describe the rugged, perilous course these athletes cover. Logjams and dams along with alligators and water moccasins in the rivers, some paddling nonstop throughout the night, these individuals give it their all. It’s almost unimaginable what these competitors are up against. It’s not only about being “smart” it’s also about finding the most efficient, accurate way to cross the bays in order to arrive at the finish line. Ottine Dam is quite possibly one of the most dangerous obstacles encountered during the Safari. The river on the course is extremely crooked with high steep banks. Even in normal conditions there is little advance warnings of the dam and when you begin to experience the 12-foot vertical drop in the river level, not unlike a water fall you know you’re headed over the dam and in deep trouble. This is extremely dangerous.
“They don’t call the Texas Water Safari ‘The World’s Toughest Canoe Race’ for nothing. In addition to the length, the challenges include whitewater rapids, multiple portages, and the relentless, soul-sapping Texas heat. Competitors have four days and four hours to paddle from San Marcos, in the center of the state, to the shy little town of Seadrift on the Gulf Coast. There is no prize money for the winners; just Texas-size bragging rights for the finishers. Larry Rice, in July 2009 Canoe & Kayak Magazine
Currents can be very treacherous and one of the most challenging sections of the race is where the Guadalupe River flows into Guadalupe Bay. At lower water levels the Alligators in this area can be extremely bold. Sometimes they practically block the shallow estuary and racers have shared

that they actually paddle through the waters by polling off on the beasts! Dangers abound! Upon entering Guadalupe Bay and San Antonio Bay, entrants must be prepared for the worse. Bay conditions can vary between “as smooth as glass” to extremely choppy water - with 3 to 5-foot waves! There are roughly eight miles of bay from the mouth of the river to the flagpole (finish line) at Seadrift. Sunday evening the winners begin arriving with finishers continuing in over the next couple of days. Friends and family are there and help them out of their canoes. These racers are exhausted and some fall asleep as soon as they touch land. Others will consume large quantities of the first real food they’ve had in days. The stamina and determination these competitors have exhibited to finish the treacherous course is almost beyond comprehension. For 52 years cheers of encouragement and welcome are heard as these finishers of the “World’s Toughest Canoe Race” make their way to the finish line. “Never again” some say, only to return year after year. Receiving a ticket to the banquet and the coveted Texas Water Safari patch are their only prizes. Theirs is an elite group and the town of Seadrift and Port Lavaca are proud to welcome them back every year in June. ✯
