Denise Walker, A Woman of Legacy

By Jennifer Larivey Frontier Services, Inc. is an oilfield company with corporate offices located in Alice, Texas. With offices in South Texas, they service Alice, Edinburg, Cuero, Odessa, & Dilley. From their Kilgore office, they service Northern Louisiana, Southern Arkansas, and Southern Oklahoma. Frontier Services, Inc. is a family owned business with one of their owners being Denise Walker. Denise Walker is not your typical oilfield company owner. She will tell you that her dream growing up in the country was to have her own farm with cattle and horses. She never thought in her wildest dreams that she would be the co-owner of a very successful oilfield service company. Denise Walker and Dickie McGhee started working in the oilfield industry in 1976 and like most companies they stepped away from the industry in the 1980’s when the drilling rigs stacked and the contracts they had with Shell and other large corporations began to become scarce. They moved their family to Pearsall, Texas, where they did some farm and ranch activities but that came with its own set of adversities. Denise talks about these adversities as if she takes them with a grain of salt. She contributes the strength she has to the ability to stand in the calm of the storm with God as her anchor. Faith and love for her family are at the core of her being. In the early 1990’s, due to the drought, they sold their ranch and began their new venture by purchasing Frontier Services from Mr. Joey Hermes out of Freer, Texas. Denise Walker holds the position of Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. She holds 50% of the company’s interest and she calls this her legacy. Dickie McGhee is President of Frontier Services, Inc. and their son Justin McGhee is the Operations Manager. Denise’s son, Bode Koehn will be joining the company soon and will be the Director of the GapVax division. Their daughter, Brittney DeLosSantos, will also be helping the family-owned and operated business by helping with the financial and operational departments. Denise says she has her bible of procedures, in case anything happens to her, she has well prepared her family because this company has to keep going even when she leaves this earth. When asking Denise what is the most important aspect of her company she quickly says, “Safety…I’m a stickler for safety. We care about our employees. We give them proper training, we make sure they know what they are doing. I tell my employees, “I’m not going to call your family to let them know that you were killed because of an accident or improper safety. No one has your back…you have two people out there with you and that is your operator and your helper. Because we are mom and pop, a local business, I’m very forensic and I am on top of safety. I will sit an employee down and test them on safety.” She says the next thing on her list is that she doesn’t tolerate drugs, synthetics, or alcohol. One of the challenges of this industry right now is that there are plenty of opportunities and jobs but you can’t find anyone that can pass a drug test or a synthetic drug test. She has said that this has been a great disappointment because more and more applicants are using synthetics. She said that even though she is charged extra for the testing of synthetics, she says it is worth it. Not many employers will test on synthetics because of the extra charges.

Another challenge in the Eagle Ford Shale play is that in her opinion, “They need slow down the drilling. People were not given proper training. Accidents and safety became the issues. You had unqualified people, growing too fast, and way too many injuries and deaths…Everyone was hurry, hurry, hurry. In our company we make sure you don’t become a number. I sincerely care for every person that works here and through the Grace of God that is why we are still here and successful.” She boldly shares her faith and says, “I can sense when something is wrong or when something isn’t going well with one of my employees. I’ll have them sit down and I’ll witness to them. I simply ask them, “Do you know who Jesus is?” They walk out of my office a changed man or woman. I give all the glory to the Man upstairs because he’s the one that deserves it.” Commending her employees and just picking up the phone to tell them they did a good job is something Denise does often. She says that her employees are the heart of their company. Denise is very strong in her faith and thanks God for gifts he has given her. She is a woman of integrity, honor, and has a great sense of intuition. She talks about how she’s not perfect. She jokingly laughs and says, “In oil & gas you have to learn how to cuss, I’m a Christian, but I’m not perfect.” During the middle of a problem or decision that has to be made, Denise has said she has to get away from the problem literally. She gets solutions when they go on road trips and they are having it out. Denise says, “Sometimes you just have to do that. Then the solution comes quickly because you have separated yourself from the problem or situation.” She talks about how many don’t know how to get away and talk about it to know what to do. You have to take time to separate yourself from the situation and then come back with the appropriate solution to the problems. The future of Frontier Services, Inc. is grand with growth in the Eagle Ford Shale and now a new yard in Pecos. Their Pecos yard will be in operation in approximately a month. Frontier has a list of services. They service the drilling rigs, do blowout preventer testing, stack lift, case and saw, wash crews for mud pits, drilling rigs, pipe, hydraulic torque wrenches, and GapVax systems. Frontier Services, Inc. is well-known in the oilfield service industry for providing the highest level of safety, experience and dependability to major and independent oil production companies. With Denise Walker as part of Frontier’s leadership, they will continue being a leader in the Oil & Gas Industry.

A MUST READ!

The Bear By Salvatore Dederick As Howard Jennings sat at the ancient desk with the journal in his hands, he took pause to reflect on the incredible series of events that had led up to this exact moment. His mind spun from it all, the death of his family, and the ache that it had brought with it. The discovery of the hidden room that had been right under his feet this whole time, in the house that he had grown up in. How could he not have known it was there? How his grandfather had not have told him of its existence? So many treasures that were waiting to be found within. Most of all he couldn’t stop thinking of the changes that were happening to him. From the heightening of his senses, to the fantastic powers that he now held control over. In truth, he still wasn’t sure if he controlled them, or they possessed him. It was overwhelming to try and take it all in. Staggering, to say the least. Almost too much for the mind to absorb, how very much had changed in such a very short time. Now, as he turned his attention to the ancient volume in his hands, his heart began to race at the thought of the knowledge to be found within. There were only but a few of the Tomes, but they were very thick, and in unbelievable condition. “There isn’t a museum on earth that wouldn’t mortgage itself to possess this collection” he thought aloud. Just then it occurred to him, “why isn’t this in grandfather’s library? He took such pride in having one of the most extensive libraries of rare and valuable books in the world, right here in this very house. Why would he hide these away in a hidden basement? It doesn’t make any sense. And how is it that they have stayed so pristine in such a damp and harsh environment?” AS the thought trailed off it was immediately replaced by another. “What if these have something to do with this change that I’m going through? They must! How else could you explain the condition, or how would you justify denying the world the knowledge of the existence of such a collection? “With that, he gently opened the volume that was in front of him. The first page was a sort of introduction to the book itself. The man who wrote it seemed very much like Howard himself. He gave a little detailed back story about the changes he had been going through. He called it...” The Becoming”. Howard Jennings felt a chill race down his spine, shooting clear through to his soul. Now he knew that he wasn’t alone. He took a cleansing breath, and this is what he read My name is Bryce Heswell, and I am writing in this journal to keep a record. A record of what I cannot say, as I do not know. I am going through a change that I cannot explain. Things are happening to me at a pace and path that cannot be natural, nor can it be denied. All that I know for sure is that, what I write in this book will sound utterly mad to whomever may read this. Often times I question the sanity of myself, as things are happening that cannot be possible. I am not quite sure where to start, so I will just let my mind

and quill wander where they may. I wish to make one thing clear, the words I write in this book are the absolute truth, and I swear this before God and all of his Angels! About one year past, my son of eight years, Elton, and my wife of nine were taken from me on the same day. In a cruel twist of fates ugly hand, it was my son Elton’s birthday that they were taken to be with the lord in heaven. They were crossing a frozen kill, when the ice gave way and the water swept them under. This was witnessed by myself and many others of the village. We all tried without avail to save them from the icy waters. The currents were too mighty and they perished despite all the efforts spent on their behalf. My grief was beyond anything that I could have imagined, it is said that there is no greater pain than suffering the death of one’s child. I myself can now attest to the truth of that matter. I felt as if my soul had been stripped from my being when Elton and Amber were taken from me. I prayed night and day to the lord to take me as well, as I did not wish to go on living without those whom I lived for in my life. Alas the lord chose not to hear or grant my plea. From the first I would not eat or drink, all that I seemed to have a thirst for was sleep. The next few weeks are lost in the haze of memories of the grief. I do not recall very much of these times. What I do recall is that it was Miss Maggie that brought me back to good sense. The odd thing is that I had not seen Miss Maggie for years. Not since I had gone away to learn the family interests. She was my father’s domestic for longer than I had been alive, yet she never seemed to age. Howard Jennings paused when the chill took him over. He felt his heart skip a beat and his mind clutched when he read the name. It was too great a coincidence that they both had a nanny named Miss Maggie. Then when he read the line that said that “she never seemed to age”, something in his heart and mind grabbed at him. He would need to talk to “his” Miss Maggie to see about her lineage. “What if? Could she be?...” The thought somehow seemed to make sense, though it defied all reason. But with the turning of recent events reason seemed not to apply to Howard Jennings’ life any more. Between the powers and apparent magical properties that were manifesting themselves on an almost Dailey schedule, nothing seemed impossible any more. He remembered the day in the library, when Miss Maggie had “accidently” broken the plate. This was so out of character for her, she was the epitome of grace, and care. Howard wondered to himself “if Miss Maggie had not broken the plate would I have ever cut my hand, and bled on the page to release the spell hidden within? Would I have ever discovered this? Intriguing piece of this insane puzzle that was my new life? “So many questions, and so few opportunities for answers. He decided to definitely pay more attention to Miss Maggie. Great care must be taken to not let too much be revealed, lest she think him mad. With that he went back to read more of Bryce Heswell’s accounts… As Miss Maggie nursed me back to health and sense things started to become queer. At first it was only little things that I noticed. My vision was the first. My whole life my sight was strong at the near, yet from afar it lacked in quality. There was many a day that my head would grow an ache when I would venture the hunt with my father and brothers. But as I sat in my bed of mourning and stared out of the window, my eyes grew in strength and my head ached no more. My eyes became hawk like, and my hearing seemed; more, somehow. I dismissed this at first as folly .Who had ever heard of such things? Senses growing stronger in a fully grown man? Not I that was for sure and you the reader might think me mad, But I swear this all to be true! Then as I healed my heart and soul over time, other things were apparently becoming more. Such as my strength, and speed. Then it happened...I was whetting my knife on the stone when it slipped. The edge went clear through to the bone before I could stop it. As I clenched the wounded hand in my other, and I prayed to God for it to not be too bad an injury. It was then that I felt the heat of the gash start to speed throughout my entire body. Again, I prayed to God for his help.it was then, that very moment that something inside me told me all would be well. As I opened my hand to inspect the wound, I could not believe my eyes. Right there in front of them the blood slowed to a stop, and the wound started to close upon itself. While I watched weeks’ worth of healing happened in mere seconds! I understand how truly mad this must sound, nor would I believe such a tale had I not witnessed it with my own eyes. To my astonishment the wound had healed in such a way as to not even leave behind a scar to show that it ever was at all. Again I prayed, only this time it was for God to protect me from whatever the evil was that had to have its grip on me. It was not until much later that I would realize nothing could be further from the truth. In time I would learn that mine is the blood of the righteous and the good, and that I was blessed not cursed. As Howard Jennings paused to think back to the once again dormant giant dog wood that he had made bloom with only the power of his mind, he felt a curious feeling in the pit of his stomach. He saw the memory of the snow drifting in the wind across the yard like an early morning fog on a glassy still lake. The yard still had that sereneness to it. The sort that only a space of snow on which no tracks had yet to be laid on it has. As the loose snow drifted calmly across the virgin sea of white that was the vast estate of his family. He reveled in the beauty of the crystals of snow, as they captured and then shattered the sun’s rays until it all looked like a misting dust of diamonds swirling before a fire. The vision was so beautiful as to take the breath away. Though he was want to stay lost in the peace of

such a beautiful memory, he could not. Reason took hold and forced his logic to continue to learn of this “change” that Bryce Heswell was writing of, he read on... So many things were “Becoming” more for me. Food tasted so much better than it ever had. I would venture to guess that it tasted as good as a favorite meal would taste to one who had not eaten in a week. Better than it had any right to. It seemed that I could sense and even smell the creatures that had hidden themselves far away. Better than even fathers prized, best hound. For the first time I was the champion of the hunt, and every hunt thereafter for that matter. Once I was hunting and had separated myself from the others, as had become my custom. I was “feeling” my way towards a bear. This was the first time I had used the “Becoming” to stalk one of the greater beasts. As I neared a clearing I felt the beast close to me and moved with the appropriate care. When I peered through the brush into the clearing, I finally laid my eyes on the great beast. I paused to admire this magnificent creature in all of his glory, and in his own element, the king of his realm. As I thought to myself how incredible a specimen he was, the beast turned and looked nowhere but into my eyes. It seemed that he knew that I was there, but how could this be? I was down wind and had become very efficient in the silence of my motion. Yet there I was locked in a gaze with this enormous beast. Just then the bear reared up on its hind legs to its full height. An incredible specimen indeed, at least three feet taller than the largest I had ever heard of let alone seen. He let loose a roar of rage that rivaled a peal of thunder. The sound was deafening, and I would later learn was heard many kilometers away. There we were, man and beast. Mortal enemies locked in some sort of moment together. Each no doubt thinking of killing the other. Slowly I raised my Blunderbuss to my shoulder and the beast tilted his head as if trying to understand what I was doing. Then I had an odd sense wash through me. There was many emotions at once, all jumbled together in a mass of confusion. Some were familiar to me, some were not. The most prominent were rage, hate, and fear. The emotions weren’t as defined as they were normally. I now know that somehow, as impossible as it sounds I was able to feel the beast’s emotions; I would almost say that I could hear them. Lost in the ridiculousness of this absurd moment, my attention strayed, for what now seems like a fatal amount of time. When again I was within my wits and I refocused on the goliath that stood before me, he was once again down on all four paws. His scythe like claws gouged deep into the earth beneath the sea of honey wheat grass in which we stood. The beast lifted his huge head to sniff and taste me as I wafted on the wind. He repeatedly licked his massive snout. Then an even greater wave of hatred invaded me. It was somehow separate, like separate in the way that what you think and what you hear are separate, though both are inside of your head at the same time. The hate was truly fierce, stronger than anything I had felt in my life before that day. I felt that it would consume me from the inside out, maybe boil my blood in my veins. Then he came. Charging at a full gallop, faster than I would have thought possible. Mouth open wide, teeth as long as a large man’s longest finger. Saliva being thrown about by the violent grace that is a bear at full speed. All around me seemed to disappear from my sight and hearing. There was nothing but the bear and I. Time seemed to fade away from us both, leaving nothing but the raw emotion of the two predators locked in the heat of the hunt. “No” I screamed, louder than I would think possible. As this registered in the great beasts ears, the raw hate filled growls stopped at once. The beast locked his front legs and dug in, scarring the earth as he came to a halt. He let out a long groan of confusion as he stood stock still, and gazed into my eyes. “Up” I commanded, for what reason I still do not know, other than to say it just felt like what was to be done. To my amazement, and the surprise of the bear, he obeyed the order. Seemingly against his will, he rose to high full, and awesome, majestic stature. No sooner had he reached his height than I pulled the lever on my blunderbuss, releasing the deadly doom that it held at bay. Though I had not taken the time or effort to line up the shot as I had been so exhaustingly taught to do my entire life, it was the truest a shot could be, loosed be any man. It stole through the beast’s heart in less time than it takes to blink the eye. The great bear took one step to the rear, and fell square on his haunches. He never broke eye contact with me. An oddly soft and almost erotic moan escaped his lips as he gently lay down and expired. While this was happening the rage and hate that he was projecting to me were replaced with waves of new emotion. I distinctly felt sorrow, fear, and regret just as real as if they were my own. For the first time in my life pity and remorse choked me like a rope around my neck. Never before had I felt guilt from the killing of a creature. Never, before now. As I approached the fallen beast I felt the heat of the tears streaming down my cheeks. I was truly sorry for the taking of this life. The ache went through to my soul, and my soul it wept. It had been a day that I knew I would never forget, not if I lived to be a hundred years old. Whatever was happening to me, this change, this “Becoming,” I knew I would never be the same. Even now as I sit here writing this for whomever to read, I can still feel the bears pain as if it were my own, as if it had just happened. To state the fact of the matter, I am right now more afraid than I ever have been in my life .I will never forget that bear or the lessons it taught me about the nature of the beast. For all beasts, whether they be man, or not, Fear, love and Feel.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this excerpt from author, Salvatore Dederick’s upcoming novel.

Sapphire Achieves Major Milestone with Continuous Green Crude Oil Production

Sapphire Energy, Inc., a leader in algae-based algae-ba Green Crude oil production, today announced it has entered into a commercial agreement with Tesoro Refining and Marketing Company, LLC, a subsidiary of Tesoro Corporation. Under the agreement, Tesoro will purchase crude oil from Sapphire Energy’s Green Crude Farm in Columbus, New Mexico, which recently reached a new milestone: continuous cultivation and crude oil production. This begins the first step of a commercial relationship to process Green Crude oil from Sapphire’s future commercial facilities. “In less than one year, Sapphire Energy has started up its commercial demonstration to grow algae; has produced crude oil from our farm; and now with Tesoro as our first commercial customer, we’re providing barrels of our oil to be refined for market use,” said Cynthia ‘CJ’ Warner, CEO and chairman of Sapphire Energy. “This moment is enormously important for the industry as it validates the benefits and advantages of Green Crude, and confirms its place as a market-viable, refiner-ready, renewable crude oil solution.” Sapphire Energy is now producing crude oil daily from algae biomass cultivated and harvested at the company’s Green Crude Farm in Columbus, NM. Oil extraction is conducted through a patented method for converting wet algae to crude oil, which enables algae to be processed without the need for a timely and costly drying step. Wet extraction technology for algae-based crude oil has been considered one of the biggest challenges to commercialization. With this process, which is the result of more than four years of research, development and field trials, the entire algae cell is now used in oil production, greatly improving yield. Furthermore, the process is scalable, and has proven to be effective with a wide range of algae strains. In initial testing by Sapphire Energy, Green Crude oil was refined into on-spec ASTM 975 diesel fuel, proving its compatibility with the existing network of pipelines, refineries and transport systems. Moving forward, the company plans to grow production significantly to further expand its commercial demonstration and begin the transition towards commercial-scale production. “Tesoro is continuously looking at new technologies for producing renewable fuels. We are pleased to become a purchaser of Sapphire Energy’s Green Crude, which shows promise as an alternative fuel solution,” said Joel Larkins, vice president of Renewable Development at Tesoro. About Sapphire Energy San Diego-based Sapphire Energy is pioneering an entirely new industry – Green Crude production – with the potential to profoundly change America’s energy and petrochemical landscape for the better. Page 2 Sapphire’s products and processes in this category differ significantly from other forms of biofuel because they are made solely from photosynthetic microorganisms (algae and cyanobacteria), using sunlight and CO2 as their feedstock; are not dependent on food crops or valuable farmland; do not use potable water; do not result in biodiesel or ethanol; enhance and replace petroleum-based products; are compatible with existing infrastructure; and are low carbon, renewable and scalable. Sapphire has an R&D facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and is currently operating the first Integrated Algal BioRefinery (Green Crude Farm) in Columbus, New Mexico. By Jennifer Larivey Ainsworth Trucking is a full service trucking company that began in 1994 by David Ainsworth, Sr and group of investors. They are able to fulfill the everyday needs of the oil & gas industry. Ainsworth Trucking has a fleet of over one-hundred trucks, which includes thirteen knuckleboom trucks. Ainsworth Trucking is able to do about any job imaginable using a knuckleboom truck, from delivering products and equipment to job sites to doing the nipple down and nipple ups on drilling rig sites. Ainsworth Trucking is able to provide a variety of services and equipment needs, including hot shot services, forklift services, forklift rentals, man lifts, pipe hauling, heavy hauling, and environmental waste hauling, cool down houses with generators along with many other services. One of the most important aspects of Ainsworth Trucking is the importance of Truck Safety. Recently, the company had an accident that would change the Trucking Industry in every way. One of their drivers had an accident near Laredo while crossing a railroad track. The accident would have been a total destruction if the train was going at its normal speed of 60 mph but that day due to some construction on the track that day the train was going only 25 mph when it impacted the knuckleboom truck. The inertia shows the devastation of the impact and the cab that was left hanging by lines, cables and tentacles on top of the frame. The frame is bent to the left because of the inertia that pushed the front of the truck. The testimony of the two men regarding the routine day they had before them and how closely they came to death due to their failure to not stop at the stop sign, while being instructed to follow several trucks in front of them by their customer. The driver attended the first STEPS meeting that Mr. Ainsworth presented his story and walked out of the meeting because it was then that he realized how truly lucky and blessed they were to still be alive. At Ainsworth Trucking, every one of their drivers views the truck as they come into the truck yard so that everyone understands the importance of stopping at every railroad crossing and that “this can happen to you.” Ainsworth Trucking has partnered with Union Pacific to give safety presentations all over Texas. Mr. Ainsworth feels that if they are able to share their story and give their testimony of how close to death his driver and swamper were then it will help other drivers understand the importance of safety. Mr. Ainsworth is the biggest advocate to truck safety and says, “The safety and well-being of my employees is of the utmost importance to me and a prime consideration as we go about the daily operation and is an essential element of our Standard Operating Procedures.” Every time Mr. Ainsworth gives the safety presentation about his employee’s failure to stop at this railroad crossing, he becomes emotional because he says, “that day he would have had to make two stops to two homes to let their loved ones know that their husband, daddy, or son wasn’t coming home.” No one ever wants to be the person to give that news. He is grateful to God that he didn’t have to make that visit but has made it his mission now to share this story with every oilfield company and anyone who needs this vital information that will take time to listen. Ainsworth Trucking Safety Policy Statement: It is the policy of Ainsworth Trucking that accident prevention is considered of primary importance in all phases of operation and administration. It is the intention of Ainsworth Trucking management to provide safe and healthy working conditions and to establish and insist upon Safe practices at all times by all employees.

The Oilfield Christian Fellowship Impacts Lives Written by Jennifer Larivey The Oilfield Christian Fellowship is a 501-C3 non-profit organization with an impactful mission statement for those of Christian Faith. This organization was humbly started as a few men gathered to pray and break bread together to support one another as Christian men in the oilfield. What began as two men, John Bird and Jim Teague, who gathered to pray, this organization has grown into thousands of lives being impacted by the message of Salvation brought to them through sharing their own testimonies. There is a range of professional men & women who are involved that not only share their personal encounters with God but also continuously give back to the communities that need them. =You can recognize them by the pins on their lapels that have a Black background that signifies our sinful nature, the Red Cross that stands for the Sacrificial blood of Christ, White oil derrick that signifies the forgiveness and new life as a Christian, and the Gold letters spelling out “Oilfield Christian Fellowship” signifies eternal life. They use this as a witnessing tool. The other unique tool they have is a very important one and that is the Oilfield bibles that they hand out to the men & women that work on the rigs.

Many members take these bibles to the rig sites to give to these hardworking men to read. Its cover is attractive to any proud oilfield worker and the treasure inside is most fulfilling…filled with the Word of God and the testimony of many oilfield men and women. It is truly inspiring and impactful to anyone who is looking for the bread of life. The leadership of this organization have truly taken their mission to share, pray and help those in need to the level needed in such a rigorous work environment. Many hours away from their families and friends can be difficult for anyone but safety out in the field is another concern for anyone at these rig sites. These workers need someone to lean on and to pray with and that is what these men & women do as there mission. Sitting in San Antonio with this great organization of men and women inspired me to see the greater work being done out in those fields that are in our own backyard. What an inspiring message they share with one another and as the scripture says in Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

The Cline Shale Play Larger than Bakken & Eagle Ford Combined

By Chris Sutton Chris Sutton at chris.s@clovergs.com The Cline shale play in West Texas’ Midland Basin is an abundant sedimentary rock formation of Pennsylvanian-aged shale (325-286 million years old). The play is found 9,000-9,500 feet underground and spans 140 miles north-to-south and 70 miles east-to-west. Fisher and Nolan counties have been the focal points, with recent increased leasing activity in Tom Green and Irion counties. Cline’s Characteristic Challenges The shale exhibits 6%-12% porosity and indicates potentially excellent yield of high-quality light crude. However, it is a tight oil play: Operators have discovered that being profitable in the Cline requires expensive and time-consuming horizontal wells, at $5-$9 million per well. In addition, operators will need to overcome two regional obstacles in order for the profitability to gain momentum: 1.

Lack of Housing

Small towns near the Cline are trying to keep up with the demands of the rapid influx of new companies and their work forces. This unforeseen population boom has overwhelmed local real estate, and supply has not met demand for homes. Many of the affected counties are experiencing severe housing shortages. 2.

Lack of Distribution Opportunities

The region lacks distribution infrastructure, and operators face the challenge of transporting the vast quantities of crude from the Cline to areas where it can be sold and/or processed. After an oversupply of crude in the region drove down the price, operators are now investigating transport solutions. Centurion Pipeline LP has announced pipeline plans to expand its existing pipeline system starting this year. Drilling Productivity among Cline’s Major Players Despite the Cline’s obstacles, analysts guess that 80-100 wells have been drilled, but production is largely kept under wraps due to

operator confidentiality. Although much is still anecdotal, overall productivity evidence shows promise. Some major players, including some of those shown in this map, have been forthcoming with concrete examples of their Cline yields: Apache Corporation: The largest acreage holder has 520,000 net acres and 2,321 horizontal wells. The “Barracuda 452H” had a peak flow rate of 810 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) and a 30-day average of 623 boe/d. Devon Energy: Total leased area encompasses 500,000 net acres. The “Averett #17H” averaged 400 boe/d over 30 days, and another horizontal well in the play produced 450 boe/d in 30 days. Laredo Petroleum: As of November 2012, they had completed 33 gross horizontal wells -- more than any other operator in the play -- with average output of 500 boe/d. Their 2013 capital budget includes $60 million for exploratory drilling, land, geological and geophysical activities, plus another $40 million for pipeline infrastructure. Pioneer Natural Resources: The peak 24-hour rate for the “University 3-31 #4H” was 485 boe/d, and the average 30-day rate was 404 boe/d. Callon Petroleum: The “Neal #321H” peaked at 827 boe/d in 24 hours. Gulfport Energy Corporation: The “Janey 16-H” produced a peak 24-hour rate of 618 boe/d and a 30-day average of 486 boe/d. Conclusion: A Strong Outlook With these early results, analysts predict that Cline will yield more than 30 billion barrels of recoverable oil. This would surpass the output from both the Bakken and Eagle Ford shale plays (at 4.3 billion and 7-10 billion barrels of recoverable reserves, respectively, per the U.S. Geological Survey). Even if the Cline doesn’t live up to these lofty expectations, all signs point to a very prolific future. The Cline only began making headlines two years ago; in that short time, the evidence has been mounting that the play could rank as one of the largest shale discoveries in the United States. Cline’s projected output is a major factor in the country’s expectations of leading the world in oil production by 2017, exemplified by Laredo’s graphical representation (above) of the Cline’s growing impact on the company’s total company oil production.

The Eagle Ford Shale Play--A Key Driver in the South Texas Economy

By Chris Sutton Discovered in 2008, the Eagle Ford Shale play is one of the largest discoveries of new oil reserves in the United States since Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in 1968, and extends over 23 South Texas counties. Its southern edge begins at Laredo and trends northeast toward Austin producing natural gas. The northern edge, a formation 50 miles wide, produces oil and the central zone is rich in natural gas liquids. New Trends are Pushing South Texas Forward The Eagle Ford’s scale and speed of development based on new technologies that allow for extraction of natural gas and oil from shale has created the ‘Eagle Ford Shale Boom’. This has attracted exploration and production companies from the Super-majors to the Independents, based on several favorable factors including:  High Reservoir Quality  Favorable Business Climate  Diversity of Play: Contains both natural gas and oil deposits  Accesses to Talent - Jobs brought to the area as a result of the shale play have wages considerably higher than the average for the region.  Lower breakeven point - Although the Eagle Ford is not a blanket reservoir, and production capabilities differ from point-to-point, there are ‘sweet spots’ where wells are extremely economic.  Existing infrastructure to support oil and gas operations  Ready access to Gulf Coast refineries

The high quality and diversity of the shale play has been an important factor in this growth: while natural gas was inexpensive, oil and gas producers shifted focus to more profitable oil. Technology was transferred from shale gas to liquids made from shale, and by 2011, the number of drilling permits in the area more than doubled. Since 2007, Eagle Ford counties have increased production of natural gas by 24%, oil by 80% and condensate by 541%. Effects on the South Texas Economy The Eagle Ford Shale Play has created revenue for local economies through lease payments (made to reserve mineral rights for a specific location), drilling, pipeline and other infrastructure construction, royalties, and the purchase of local goods and services. There has been an estimated $7.5 billion in lease payments since 2007. Even if only 5% of this compensation is spent in the Eagle Ford counties, it brings $375 million into the local economy. In 2011, the shale play generated an expenditure of approximately $14.6 billion by oil and gas producers. Additionally, the jobs brought to the area as a result of the shale play have considerably higher wages than the average for the region, with wages increasing 14.6% in the 23 Eagle Ford counties, as compared to 6.8% for all of Texas.

The Shale Boom is Expected to Continue The discovery of the Eagle Ford Shale Play has sparked enormous oil and gas growth in South Texas. The Shale Boom has also been good for Texas as a whole, as companies drilling in the region often spend money on services in other cities. Although it’s difficult to say how long the Shale Boom will continue, large companies are committing billions of dollars to build up the infrastructure of the region, so it is expected that economic growth will continue for years to come.
