Several Bastrop County races got more competitive as the sign-up deadline passed on March 9. The Democratic and Republican primary elections were recently set for May 29, as federal judges in San Antonio settled on an interim voting map for the state of

Former Bastrop County Judge Ronnie McDonald made his decision last weekend: He will run for the U.S. Congress. Last week, a f t e r announcing Ronnie his resignaMcDonald tion as judge, McDonald had been weighing his options and was considering a run for either Texas House District 17, currently

held by Republican Tim Kleinschmidt or for the newly created U.S. House of Representatives seat, which encompasses part of Bastrop County and runs south to Corpus Christi. “I’m excited about going out and shaking hands,” McDonald said. “I’m looking forward to representing District 27. I will spend next week on the phone, raising funds. Then I’ll go out to the outlying areas.” Asked why he chose to run for the U.S. Congressional spot, he said, “I spent much See “McDONALD,” Page 14

Elgin sidewalk project moves forward By CHARLES WOOD Elgin Courier

Elginites will soon see sidewalk improvements in the downtown area thanks to a grant. Several new sidewalks will be built, along with handicap access ramps. Work on the new sidewalks should begin in early or midsummer. At their March 6 meeting, the Elgin City Council voted unanimously to hire TRC as a con-

tractor for engineering services. Sidewalks will be constructed on the following streets: • South Main Street, from El Maguey Restaurant to the Depot Museum parking lot; • 1st Street, from the alley to Ave. C (near the fire station), • Central Ave, from Ave. C to Ave. B. American Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps will be constructed at: • Ave. C and 2nd Street,

• Ave. C and 1st street, • Ave. C at Advocacy Outreach. Community Development Director Amy Miller recommended that the city accept the bid from TRC because of the firm’s experience with sidewalk projects, which have included work in historic districts and its experience with the reviews required by the Texas Historic Commission. TRC has been the engineering firm for six sidewalk proj-

Wing Tips

Miscellaneous Tips 1. Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste. 2. Add garlic at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic. 3. Heat leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of Kay Wing the stove; set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro

pizza. 4. Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of broken glass you can’t see easily. 5. Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth! EMS students learn serious consequences of drinking and driving By CHARLES WOOD Elgin Courier

Watching “Jacqui’s Story wasn’t easy for the eighth graders at Elgin Middle School, but its message could ultimately save their lives. Project Celebration hosted the DVD presentation on Wednesday, March 7, in which Jacqui Saburido and Reggie Stephey told how their paths crossed in September 1999 with tragic results. Stephey, a popular student who played football for Lake Travis High School, made a decision which destroyed several lives and changed his forever. After a party, he got behind the wheel after drinking, crossed the center line and struck a car head on. Stephey only had minor injuries, but two people in the other car died in the crash. Jacqui, a girl from Venezuela who was attending college and had plans to become a singer, was burned over 60 percent of her body, losing her nose, ears, fingers, hair, eyelids and most of her eyesight. Stephey was charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and served seven years in prison. Every day, 75 people in Texas are killed or injured in alcohol-related accidents. “We’re showing this because these eighth graders will be

in high school next year and many will get their drivers permits, said Pam Harkins, president of Project Celebration Elgin. “We want to make them aware of the dangers of drinking and driving. Project Celebration representative Tim Schultz said he wanted to get the point across that this is a real risk the students will face at some point. “Anybody can be affected, the passenger or the driver, he said. “In the next year or two they will be driving and will be exposed to alcohol. We See “DWI, Page 11

Do you suffer from constipation? Do you have less than 2 bowel movements a day? If you answered “yes to these questions you would benefit from LBS II. It is a tried and true herbal laxative formula that has been around for over three decades. Formulated by herbalist Stan Malstrom, LBS II is a lower bowel formula designed to stimulate intestinal peristalsis and improve bowel function. It contains several laxative herbs, along with herbs that stimulate production of digestive enzymes and bile. It also has mild diuretic and blood-purifying effects. Generally used for cleansing programs, or to relieve occasional constipation.

106 B Depot St. Elgin 512-285-5500 CAUTIONS Long-term use of any stimulant laxative can eventually decrease muscle tone of the colon. These laxatives should be for occasional use only. If one’s bowel does not return to normal function, look deeper into the underlying causes of the constipation. Typical problems include lack of digestive enzymes, poor liver function, not drinking enough water, lack of dietary fiber, magnesium deficiency, sedentary lifestyle (insufficient exercise), and stress (muscle spasms). Gentle Move would be a better suggestion for nursing mothers.

ELGIN POLICE DEPARTMENT BLOTTER

On EMS use of fundraising money Dear Editor, To coin a phrase, I am neither the parent of an EMS child, nor do I play one on TV. However, my wife and I have each spent nearly 40 years in various fields of lower and higher education, so we are familiar with the environment and politics of such institutions. It is the job of parents to make sure their kids attend classes regularly; that they (the kids) behave themselves and generally do what is required to get good grades. It is also useful if the parents work with their children’s teachers to make sure the youngsters demonstrate a basic understanding of grammar, composition, math and all the other subjects which mold them into useful, productive citizens after the El-Hi experience is complete. Fundraising and its tie to campus activities ought to be an ancillary part of campus life. Management of this money is the job of the faculty, staff and trustees of the school's administration. If every parent saw it as their

job "to get them (the Administration) on the straight and narrow..." the faculty and staff couldn't do their job, which is to teach. To impose one's code of conduct in this case on the faculty and staff is out of the bounds of the parent-teacher relationship — that is, unless one has a political ax to grind. When is "our" money not "our" money? Decades ago in another city, we gave thousands of dollars to our church, specifically earmarked to go to a piano fund. Instead, the minister (whose path should have been on the "straight and narrow") put that money in the general fund and we were powerless to change it. Only the wealthiest donors among us can attach conditions to funding; viz, unless the money is spent in specific ways, the funding will stop. School activity moneys seldom fall in that category. I only know what I read in the newspaper and we recall the recent Aqua Water/City See “LETTER” Page 5

of Elgin controversy, wherein the staff of The Elgin Courier laid out in considerable detail both sides of the quarrel. Those whom (not "who") they interviewed were given adequate coverage for a thorough explanation of the facts as they saw them. In the case of EMS activity funds, the TEA and the District Audit Manager all found no significant misuse or misdirection of the funds. Here in Texas, The Texas Rangers are the nearest thing we have to God (or at least Solomon) when it comes to seeking out the truth and even THEY found no proof of malfeasance. If one has political ambitions in a school district, it does not look good on one's

résumé to say that they birddogged a matter for 12 months, only to be told by various authorities (including THE TEXAS RANGERS) that their claim had no merit. A better credential would be how the candidate had worked within the district to promote activities and relationships for the uplifting of student morale, thus increas-

The Hermann Sons Lodge located near Elgin, Coupland Lodge No. 113, has been recognized for reaching its goal as part of a membership campaign conducted by Hermann Sons Fraternal Insurance in 2011. Lodges across the state were challenged to “Reach Higher” by adding new members to their rolls. Each lodge was given a new member goal for the year with members encouraged to help agents reach that goal by recommending their family and friends for membership. Lodges that met that goal were recognized at officer installation ceremonies held in January.

On Saturday morning April 21 at 9 a.m., the Elgin CROP Hunger Walk will be held at the gazebo park downtown to show our love and active concern for neighbors in need near and far. The participants, ranging from newborns to nonagrarians, will be raising awareness and funds to change the world in real and measurable ways — digging wells that will bring clean water to villages; providing seeds and tools so that people can grow their own food; helping communities and families rebuild after disaster. Whether it's responding to flood and tornado damage in parts of the U.S. or helping to rebuild earthquake-damaged homes in Haiti, CROP Hunger Walks are making a difference. CROP Hunger Walk funds will benefit the overall work and ministry of Church World Service — working around the world to help those in need help themselves through refugee assistance, self-help development programs, advocacy and disaster relief. And, it’s important to note that 25 percent of what we raise will help the Food Pantry and the Community Cupboard in their important work here in Elgin. So please mark your calendars and join us, whether as a walker or sponsor. Together — with your family, group, or congregation — we can change the world, one step at a time. You can register online today and begin gathering sponsors at www.cropwalkonline.org. For additional information or to volunteer, please contact Steven Cox or Dorothy Doolittle at the First United Methodist Church office by calling 512-285-4503 or emailing fumcelgin@sbcglobal.net. Also, an Elgin Kickoff meeting in will be held at the First United Methodist Church library on March 20, at 10 a.m. Breakfast treats, coffee, etc will be served. Church World Service representative, Howard Hartman will speak.

By Pastor Jerry Edmon, Family Worship Center I understand that disappointment is hard to overcome when the people around you are not behaving as they should. This is especially true when you are believing for a broken relationship to be restored. God will not change another person’s will. He won’t make anyone do anything. In spite of this you have to trust the Lord. Continue to persevere, and don’t quit. You can’t be responsible for what other people do, but you can be responsible for what you do. If you let rejection fester in you it will poison your present and your future. Overcoming disappointment requires us to let go of the past. I am not saying that God won’t deal with their heart and send people and circumstances their way to encourage them to change, but your life and future cannot be held hostage to the inconsistencies of another person’s character. In that case how can I ever trust anyone again? I would like for you to look at trust from a different point of view. Trust is not “being able to predict what other people will do”. Trust is knowing that I can handle what other people do. I know that I am going to be ok and I can enter a relationship because I know what to do if something goes wrong. I set myself up for disappointment if I place my trust in other people. I think you should have confidence in other people and give them the benefit of the doubt but it is misplaced to put your trust in other people. You should trust in the Lord and trust in yourself. If you have unrealistic expectations about other people, they will most likely fall short of them and in the end you will be disappointed. That can result in an emotional wound that is felt on some level by everyone that you come in contact with. If you bring negative trust issues into a new relationship you will sow seeds of suspicion, fear and rejection into everything you do together. These things are toxic to new relationships. Your new relationships should not have to pay for what your old relationships did to you. That’s really not fair.

Lady Cats trounce two district foes By JAMES WORSHAM Staff Reporter

What some thought would be a 5-1 Bastrop win turned out to be an 11-1 Elgin rout behind Jenna Wings’ 11 strike outs as the Lady Cats stay undefeated in district through Monday, March 12. Wing threw only 3 balls and gave up only 1 run off a few of Bastrop’s doubles. “She looked good today,” Coach Amanda Wolf said. “She’s throwing with a lot more pop and spin on the ball and is more balanced at the moment. She worked really hard to get back on track and we got her refocused and ready. ” Wing threw her first 5 strikeouts early with 3 in the bottom of the first inning and 2 in the second. In the third, Bastrop got a runner on base; two outs later Wing gave up a double that gave Bastrop their lone run of the game, but she stayed calm and struck out the next batter. Offensively Elgin got on the board early with a Shelbi

HALEY SEWALSON would have beat the throw at home plate anyways, but a Bastrop error helped. Swenson double for 2 runs batted in and three at-bats. Later Haley Sewalson knocked a base hit to center

field to bring in Swenson and put the Cats up 3-0. Wolf said they have worked on getting runs sooner to help Wing relax. “We need to get those leadoff hitters on base and not make any mistakes out there or get any base errors,” she said. In the second, Bailey Alanis hit a 2 RBI double to left field to put Elgin ahead 5-0 while Abby Prinz hit a double to center field for another 2 runs in the third for the 7-0 lead. Swenson brought in Prinz with a single for an 8-0 lead. In the sixth, Morgan Schultz led off with a double and Sewalson singled. Chelsea Everage hit a single for 2 runs and Kaci Olson hit a double to bring in Everage to take the winning 11-1 lead.

Despite the big win, Coach Wolf was not 100 percent pleased with her team’s performance. “We looked a little flat out there,” she said. “I guess it’s because they’re on Spring Break.” Lady Cats bury Connally with runs The Elgin Lady Cat Softball team blew out Pflugerville Connally 17-0 Monday, March 5 and needed only three wins to do it. Scoring 5 runs in the first inning, 7 in the second and 5 in the third made for a short game against the Lady Cougars and keeps Elgin at the top of district. The dominating victory follows the Lady Cats’ 9-5 win See “SOFTBALL,” Page 14

Lady Cats in playoff hunt The game between the Elgin Lady Cat soccer team and the Hutto Hippos was cancelled after the first half due to severe lightning storms and a torrential downpour. The game ended with a score of 1-1, with the Elgin goal scored by senior Edith Valle and assisted by senior Estefany Reyes. It was a defensive battle with both teams having equal number of opportunities to take the lead. Another fine performance by freshmen goalkeeper Kenia Valladares kept the Lady Cats in the hunt for a 4th consecutive run in the playoffs. The team will have to defeat the Connally cougars in the last regular season game and hope that Hutto

drops their two games to solidify a fourth place finish and a chance to a post season run. Coach Pedro Eguez said he would like to commend the performance of the following ladies who again put in a solid performance and helped the team protect the valuable point gained on Friday’s game: junior Gemma Arrieta, junior Jessica Larson, junior Ruby Estrada, senior Suzette Aguilar, senior Blanca Turrubiartes and freshman Dania Mendoza. The Lady Cats will have a bye on Tuesday, March 20th but will finish the season away against Connally Friday, March 23 at 7:45 p.m., a game that could decide the fate of the team.

Sports Griffin named girls varsity basketball coach By JAMES WORSHAM Staff Reporter

After a two-week search, the Elgin Athletics Department named Terra Griffin as the new head coach of the girls Varsity Basketball team. Girls’ Athletics Coordinator Sherry Pfister informed Griffin she was selected for the position Monday, March 5, after a series of interviews with several coaches. “It was a good experience, Terra Griffin said of the interview process. “It will have its obstacles and change is always difficult.

I just wanted them to know I was interested in the job and to have the opportunity to get my portfolio together and show what kind of coach I can be. Griffin had previous experience as a head coach at high Terra Griffin school in Pensacola, Fla, from 2005 to 2006.

“Once I began coaching I realized I had an awful lot to learn, said Griffin. “When I moved to Texas I wanted to learn under someone else. Before, when I was a head coach I was overwhelmed and unsure of what to do. After the experience she decided to spend a few years as an understudy, learning by working as an assistant with other head coaches. “I spent five to six years studying and learning both what I thought was good and what was bad, Griffin said. The early hire gives Griffin time to prepare and imple-

ment the over-arching goals for the girls basketball program. Her first goal is to improve the number of players in the girls basketball program “There’s a lot of talent in the community and a lot of kids playing on the middle school teams, but they aren’t making that transition to high school, said Griffin. Her second goal is to turn the program that is annually in playoff contention and make runs in the playoffs. “There’s a lot of potential here, Griffin said.

Thursday morning. Elgin went to work early, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead and by the end of the fourth was up 10-1. Lanier scored 3 runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Elgin lead to 10-4, but the Cats responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth and got the “run rule win. Leading up to the tournament, Elgin stole a 2-1 victory over the Hutto Hippos in Elgin in a pitchers duel

Monday, March 5. Elgin held quiet through most of the evening and gave up a run to Hutto in the top of the sixth inning. Down 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, Elgin finally cracked the Hutto defense and scored two runs. Pitcher James Stanesic struck out 7 batters and pitched the entire seven innings. Elgin hosts Cedar Ridge at Elgin High School Thursday, March 15, at 6:30 p.m. and visits Cedar Creek Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, Elgin hosts Hendrickson at 6:30 p.m.

Wildcats seeking first district win Correction The Elgin Wildcat baseball team’s participation in the Austin Tournament was cut short by the weekend’s foul weather, but they did manage to get an 8-2 win over Eastside Memorial in Thursday, March 8, before the storms came. After getting out of the first inning tied 1-1, Elgin went to work building a solid lead with consistent batting in the next four innings. The Cats

scored to runs in the top second inning to get things started and were 1, 2 and 2 over the next three innings to go up 8-1. Eastside Memorial managed to round the bases once in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the score to 82, but Elgin put an end to that and came out with the win in the sixth. Dalton Irwin was 2-2 at the plate and scored a run. Devin

Work had 2 runs batted in, while Geno Perez and Leo Castro both scored two runs each. The win helps Elgin rebound from a disappointing district loss to Hutto and helps them break even on the season overall with a 6-6 record. The 7-1 loss to Hutto, however, puts Elgin at 0-2 in disSee “BASEBALL, Page 13

Wildcat alum a junior college stand out Ethan Lynch is making himself known this year on the basketball court at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde. In his first year at SWJTC he is already a starter. The Cowboys finished in first place in the South Texas Club Sports League, with an 11-3 record. They were the top seed in the post-season tournament March 7-11 in San Antonio. At 6 feet 3 inches, Lynch may not be the tallest on the team, but is more than able to do the job and his stats for the year are impressive for his first year on the team. He is averaging 15 points per game, making 95 percent of his free throws, takes 3 charges a game, and has numerous “double-doubles and several “triple-doubles this year. Continuing his love of the game and still drawing charges he continues to stand out as one of the leaders on the team. At Elgin High School Lynch won newcomer of the year in 2009, MVP both his Junior and Senior years, All-District two years and All-Academic Team his whole varsity career. He was the Bastrop County Defensive player of the year his senior year. Most fans remember him for

ETHAN LYNCH in uniform for the Elgin Wildcats during his senior year. standing his ground taking charges and being on the floor a lot, which earned Lynch National Charge Leader (110) on MaxPreps.com in 2010.

His senior year he was awarded the Purple Heart in athletics, the highest award for male and female athletes at EHS and also made the all-

time top ten list for points scored at EHS, ranking seventh on the list. Lynch was also awarded perfect attendance for thirteen years of school, and never missed a game or practice in all six years of school sports. “I first met Ethan when he was in middle school, Coach David Schmitt said. “He attended my basketball camp and I quickly learned what a hard working young man he is. As Ethan got older and played high school basketball for me, I also learned what a dedicated player he is both in the classroom and on the court. Ethan has continued on in college where he is very successful. He returns home to Elgin to help with the very camp I met him. He has become a great role model for our community. During the summer Lynch shows his love and dedication of the game by working the prestigious Don Eddy Basketball Camps as a demonstrator. Lynch had attended Don Eddy camps during high school and after graduation he was hired to work for the Camps. Lynch has traveled in Texas as well as Kansas and Missouri. Ethan Lynch is the of Sondra Hall and the late Shane Lynch.

Local Sports Legend Wins State Championship Local sports legend Eric “Paco Haywood, and the members of the Austin Vipers of the South Texas Amateur Football League, won the STAF Championship and finished their season with a perfect 13-0 record, and a #1 ranking in the nation in AA Semi-Pro football this season. Athletic dreams are something that many young children have, and a few actually get to accomplish. The city of Elgin has had hundreds of these dreams over the past 20 years and will see hundreds more over the next 20. Eric “Paco Haywood’s dream of sports excellence was developed back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, when he first discovered the game of football. Elgin did not have a Pop Warner league for Haywood to participate in so he initially learned the game in vacant fields and the school playground. Haywood began playing organized football at Booker T. One-Act Play

Hello World

THE ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL THESPIANS will present The Curious Savage by John Patrick for its UIL One-Act play competition. The Curious Savage is set in the late 1940s. It is a comedy highlighting the image of sanity balancing with delusion. The students will perform on Thursday, March 22 at the UIL OAP Zone A competition in Bastropʼs performing arts center. EHS will be the fourth of five shows that day beginning at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 for all five shows. Pictured at left are Cassidy Timms as Ethel P. Savage and Madison Bristoll as Miss Willie.

PICTURED ABOVE is Lana Hurtado as Mrs. Paddy. At right is David Ogrodny as Dr. Emmett.

the cards. Instead, in 2002, a new Semi-Pro team was being developed in Bastrop and they asked the EHS graduate to come and play for them. Haywood was a QB and receiver for the Bastrop County Bulldogs in the National Amateur Football League (NAFL), finishing with seven wins and four losses in their first season. Haywood would play for the Bulldogs for 3 years making the NAFL All-Star team twice in 2003 and 2004.

In 2004 Haywood would have to deal with a situation that befalls many athletes. While playing for the Texas Bulldogs, on his birthday in 2004, Haywood tore his ACL while playing QB. Reconstructive surgery would have to wait until 2006 and rehab would follow. Haywood continued to play for the Bulldogs until 2009, making the WFL (World Football League) All-Star team 3 times. Haywood decided to leave the Bulldogs in 2010 to play for the ATX Tigers/Renegades of the Texas United Football League (TUFL) and went 9-3

for the season. In the same season Haywood also played for the Central Texas Outlaws also finishing with a 9-3 record and another selection to the All-Star team. In 2011, Haywood had made the decision to retire from semi-professional football, but was encouraged by his girlfriend and teammates to give it one more try with the Austin Vipers of the STAF. Haywood signed on as the starting QB for the Vipers and together they steam-rolled to a perfect 13-0 record, including a decisive win against the Cuero Oilers in the STAF League Championship game.

had an outstanding performance, going 3 for 3 at bat with 2 doubles and an RBI. Swenson’s seventh inning double brought in Devin Word for Elgin’s lone run of the game. Elgin’s district schedule does not get any easier either.

The Cats face Cedar Ridge in Round Rock Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m. Elgin does get Cedar Creek at home Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m., but faces Hendrickson in Pflugerville Tuesday, March 20.

Proud parents Elisabeth and Joshua Jacobs are pleased to announce the arrival of their daughter, Hazel Adalynn Jacobs. She was born on March 7, 2012 at

1:46 p.m. and weighed 7 pounds 6.4 ounces and was delivered at St. Mark’s Medical Center by Shannon Juno, MD. Hazel has one brother,

Hunter Jacobs. Proud grandparents are Gary and Kathy Lamb. Proud great-grandparents are George and Mary Lamb of Elgin and Albert Jacobs of Gonzales.

Yard of the Month

SPRING HAS ARRIVED EARLY in Elgin as evidenced by Elgin Garden Club's March Yard of the Month. The front yard at the home of Jack and JoAnn Wilson, 701 N. Main, has a Red Bud tree in full bloom. On one side of the front steps is a lavender Trailing Lantana, with a purple-bloomed Mexican Heather opposite it. Boston fern and small nandina add accent to these. Two large clay pots with resident ceramic lady-bugs await the bloom of a crape myrtle and daylilies, but the side yard has redtipped Photinia, a white Bridal wreath, and a tall Nandina loaded with red berries. A holiday red poinsettia still in full bloom has been planted opposite these along with a flowering quince. This neatly-kept yard has had loving care.

This win elevated the Vipers to the #1 ranking in the Nation in AA Semi-Pro football. The Vipers traveled to Homestead, Florida to play in the National Championship game on January 14, 2012, but came up short against a team from Miami. Haywood would also be named to his 5th AllStar Team for the 2011 season. When asked about how this season was different than seasons past, Haywood replied,

“This season I joined a group of men that banded together like brothers. We were the most feared team in the league, but I will admit that I was a little distracted with becoming a father too.” The Vipers were given their STAF championship rings two days before Christmas this year and that is when Haywood said that it really felt real, after all he had been through in amateur football

the previous decade. Haywood had decided to return to the Vipers for the 2012 season. The team has changed leagues and the season looks to be challenging. Haywood has a son, Jace, who may someday follow in his father’s footsteps and chase after a dream of his own. For Haywood, that would be just fine, because that way he could still be a part of the game that he loves.

Belton Tournament On Thursday, March 1, Elgin opened the Belton tournament with an 11-0 loss to first ranked 4A Waco Midway, then losing their next two against Belton 9-3 and Celina 13-8. The losing streak is notable because Elgin beat Belton 130 in the season opener. Fortunately, Elgin turned things around in the pivotal fourth and fifth innings of the game against Cedar Ridge, ending their three game skid with the win. Returning to the Belton tournament Saturday, March 3, Elgin blasted Early 13-1 and beat Lampasas 10-7. It should be noted that Celina and Lampasas are both ranked 3A teams in the Texas Girls Coaches Association. The skid explains the sense of urgency that permeated the Cedar Ridge, but the senior class proved there leadership and resiliency, getting things

Both consider Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood their favorite. Their favorite musicians include Django Reinhardt, Stephan Grapelli, Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang. Current favorites include the Western Swing group, the Quebe Sisters. The Jordan sisters have already won some acclaim for their fiddling skills. They won the youth competition at the 2010 Old Settlers Music Festival in Driftwood and were invited to perform a set at the festival the following year. Both homeschooled, the sisters practice on their instruments between two and three hours every day. They have four music teachers: Elizabeth Warren, who teaches classical violin; Mary Hattersley, who teaches fiddle; Suzi Stern, who teaches voice and Mike Harris, who teaches mandolin, guitar and other instruments — he also makes some of their song arrangements. The girls also get plenty of experience playing before audiences. They can often be

heard performing at the River Valley Farmers Market in Elgin. They also play in small towns throughout Texas, including Giddings, LaGrange and Edna. They have played at the Country Hoedown in Lexington, held each Tuesday night at the Senior Center. Their parents are Andre and Marci Jordan. Andre is a battalion chief for the Austin Fire Department and Marci is in charge of the girls’ schooling. “We don’t push them to do music, said Marci. “We try to get them to do less. We want them to go outside, ride their ponies and they’ve got to get an education. The girls’ budding music career has been a great experience so far. “ We’ve met a lot of really nice people. Johnny Gimble, his son Dick and granddaughter Emily were great. They got to meet Mark O’Connor at fiddle camp. The girls have met some incredible musicians. There are so many people playing traditional old country and swing. We don’t even look for these shows. People call us for things. Before the girls started playing, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as an Opry circuit.
