The Cuero Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved an exit agreement with Superintendent Henry Lind during a special meeting Thursday afternoon. Lind, who had been the school district's superintendent since 2004, did not have his contract extended in January. “It boils down to something simple - four board members didn’t hire me,” Lind said. “It’s
nothing personal. It’s part of the business and I knew that when I got hired on.” School board president B.J. Drehr would not disclose the amount of the contract buyout nor would he disclose the reasons why Lind’s contract wasn’t extended. The school board responded only with a written statement. “A critical responsibility of the board is to ensure the district
has superintendent leadership to continue to accomplish the goals of the district,” the statement read. “The board thanks Mr. Lind for his service to the district and will begin the process to seek a new superintendent for the district.” The board unanimously approved Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Pam Longbotham to serve as interim
superintendent. Lind said he plans to retire and remain in Cuero. He said he was proud of what he was able to accomplish in his eight years. “The eight years here have been good,” Lind said. “The plant and facilities are in great shape. The fund balance has increased by $6.5 million. The academics are solid. I have nothing to be ashamed of. It was just time for new blood and that happens.” Lind’s annual salary was near $125,000.

DeWitt 4H archery All-way stop going up at 87 and 72 team to hold Relay For Life fundraiser
RecordDeWitt
The DeWitt 4H archery team will be participating in the DeWitt County Relay for Life for the second year. The team’s motto is “Aiming For a Cure,” as everyone participating on the team has been touched in some way by cancer, most by relatives who have had the disease. The fundraiser for the team will be a barbecue meal on Sunday, April 15 with plates being served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Friar Ag Building in the Cuero Municipal Park. There will be plates to go as well as to eat there. The meal will consist of brisket, green beans and potato salad and the trimmings. Tickets are $8 with all of the proceeds going to Relay For Life. There will also be archery demonstrations by the DeWitt 4H archery team. Luminarias will also be for sale for $5 each. These are the white paper bags that sit along the walking path that have candles in them and are lit, weather permitting, after dark during Relay For Life. They can be
purchased “In Honor Of” or “In Memory Of” loved ones. The DeWitt County Relay For Life is also doing “Cuero Cans Cancer” again this year. This is a canned food drive in which the canned goods are used, instead of sand, to weigh down the luminarias the night of relay. After the relay is over, the canned goods are then donated to local food pantries. Anyone wanting to contribute to this can bring canned goods on April 15. Last year, there were over 1,000 luminarias around the walking path, each of which had two canned goods in them, for a total of over 2,000 cans of food. Meal tickets and luminarias are available from any archery team member or by calling 361-550-9184. The walk will be held in the Cuero Municipal Park at the clubhouse on Friday, April 20. Members of the DeWitt 4H archery team are youth ranging from third to 12th grades from all of the surrounding towns in DeWitt County, including Yoakum, Cuero, Westhoff and Yorktown.

Construction of KMCC pipeline spans across seven-county region Project costs estimated $220 million
By GLENN REA Record Editor & Publisher
A somewhat quieter, less flashy aspect of the search for petroleum in DeWitt County has been the construction of pipelines. For over a year the steady trek of pipelines has made its way west to east with plans to move oil and condensate to refineries on the coast. Kinder Morgan Crude and Condensate Pipeline Project is a 61-mile new construction and 109mile existing natural gas pipeline that will be converted to liquids. The 20”, 24” and 30” pipelines originate in Petrohawk’s Black Hawk Field in the Eagle Ford Shale. The line will extend to the Houston Ship Channel where it initially delivers condensate to multiple terminating facilities with access to local refineries, petrochemical plants and docks. The counties involved in this project include DeWitt, Victoria, Jackson, Wharton, Fort Bend, Harris and Brazoria. This project is estimated to cost $220 million and is scheduled to be completed in June. The pipeline will have

Allen Fore, director of public affairs for KinderMorgan, spoke at Cuero Rotary Club recently. He said just over 21 miles of the KMCC pipeline project will travel through DeWitt County. There will also be a pump station constructed on Bell Road between Cuero and Yorktown. This station will provide pressure to transport condensate (and crude oil) from producers in the Eagle Ford Shale to customers in the Houston Ship Channel. This station will cost $25 million to construct and will have 15,300 hp.
The capacity of the station is 300,000 barrels per day. It covers about 99 acres. Constructing the pipeline has not been constroversy. without With the strength of eminent domain over landowners, KMCCPP has earned negative reaction from some landowners which may have to be decided in court. But as others have analyzed the project, when completed it should reduce the trucktanker traffic on county roads considerably. Some have estimated when the is pushing pipeline 50,000 bbls. a day to Houston, it could reduce over 300 truck transports per day. There is also the financial benefit of the project. The pipeline will deal with 61 landowners which means lease checks. The company also notes a large number of temporary construction jobs and it expects to pay about $863,000 in tax revenue locally. Fore said his company is also attempting to publicize Kinder-Morgan Foundation that provides grants to nonprofit youth programs in the communities where they have operations. He said additional information is available at their website: www.kindermorgan. com.

AUSTIN - Texas’ new law supporters say is meant to prevent voter fraud got a thumbsdown from the U.S. Department of Justice on March 12. If the federal government had allowed the law to take effect in its present form, voters would have been required to present a state-approved identification card in addition to their voter registration card at the polls in order to cast a ballot. In a March 12 news release that came out the day the Justice Department made its decision public, the Brennan Center for Justice in Washington, D.C., stated “Texas’ photo ID law could prevent hundreds of thousands of eligible voters from casting a ballot, including a disproportionate number of minorities.” Although passed by the Texas Legislature as Senate Bill 14 and signed into law in 2011, the law is subject to a higher level of scrutiny by Section 5 of the U.S. Voting Rights Act of

1965. The Lone Star State, because of its history of racial discrimination in elections, under Section 5 must receive preclearance for any changes in voting qualifications, standards, practices or procedures prior to their implementation. Preclearance can be given by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia or the U.S. Department of Justice headed by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Texas’ chief elections officer, Secretary of State Hope Andrade, expressed disappointment in the Justice Department’s decision but state Attorney General Greg Abbott said the action was “no surprise, given the Obama Administration’s denial of a similar law in South Carolina.” Gov. Rick Perry, in a March 12 statement, said the Justice Department “has no valid reason for rejecting this important law, which requires nothing more extensive than the type of photo identification necessary to receive a library card or board an airplane.” On the other hand, Section 5 is in place to hold certain states and other jurisdictions where inequality has been a problem, to more stringent requirements to uphold the 15th Amendment’s guarantee that no citizen shall be denied the right to vote on account of race or
color. Several organizations came forward in support of the Justice Department’s decision to deny preclearance, including the League of Women Voters, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, the NAACP and the Texas Democratic Party. State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, said, “What the Justice Department said in its ruling was that Texas failed to prove that the changes in law would not have a retrogressive effect on minority voters. In other words, the new law would make it harder for minority citizens to vote than the existing requirements already set in state law.” Secretary of State Andrade, in a March 12 press release said, “My office will continue working with the Texas Attorney General’s Office in seeking to implement the will of the citizens of Texas, as enacted by our duly elected representatives in the Texas Legislature.” On March 14, Abbott filed a motion to revise the state’s pending complaint seeking preclearance. The revised motion challenges the constitutionality of Section 5 itself. After filing the motion Abbott explained, “As recently as two months ago, (U.S. Supreme Court) Justice (Anthony) Kennedy stated from the bench that Section 5 places Texas at a disadvantage compared to other

states. The Department of Justice is using Section 5 to deny Texas the right to enforce a law that is allowed under the U.S. Constitution. Section 5 cannot trump the Constitution.”
Combs touts transparency rating Texas has received the top ranking for government spending transparency in an annual report on all states issued by the consumer watchdog U.S. Public Interest Research Group, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced March 14. Combs’ office’s texastransparency.org website provides a way for citizens to keep tabs on state and local governmental finances and spending.
Apple to beef up operations here Gov. Rick Perry on March 9 announced Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple Inc. “will expand its presence in Texas with a $304 million investment in a new campus in Austin that will create more than 3,600 new jobs.” In exchange for Apple’s commitment to create these new jobs in Texas, the state has offered Apple an investment of $21 million over 10 years through the Texas Enterprise Fund managed by the governor’s office.

Orozco said that she’s the third Hispanic woman who has received this honor and one of two who is still living. Each year, the TSHA names several fellows; a fellow is the highest honor that the association bestows on scholars who research and publish Texas history. Orozco said that her interest in Texas history was spurred in college. “I took a Mexican American history class in 1978 in which I had to write a research paper. From then on, I became interested in history and studied it over time. Texas was my major area of study,” Orozco said. In her career in academics, Orozco has written 80 encyclopedic articles for the New Handbook of Texas for the TSHA. She also co-
edited Mexican Americans in Texas History and wrote No Mexicans, Women or Dogs Allowed: The Rise of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement, which was published by the University of Texas in Austin. “Right now I’m working on a book about my student activism in college ... It’s a collection of my writings. I used to write letters to the editor and open editorials. I was also a columnist at the student newspaper at UCLA, so it’s from all of that,” Orozco said. Orozco began her education at Texas State University at San Marcos and then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin. She pursued graduate studies at UCLA. She has advice for students who are currently in the process of applying for college. “I initially wasn’t admitted to UT Austin, because I had low SAT scores. But you have to keep trying and figure out what you’re doing wrong. Sometimes, people do not recognize your potential. You alone have to recognize your potential and act on that,” Orozco said. Dr. Orozco is currently chair of ENMU-Ruidoso’s history and humanities department.

All residential customers and business property owners with seven or fewer employees living inside the city may use the Citizens’ Collection Center during this week free of charge upon the presentation of a paid City of Cuero utility bill. The Collection Center is located on Highway 87 South across from Weber Motor Co. Items accepted at the Collection Center include magazines, brush, furniture, newspapers, cardboard, lumber, roofing materials, and appliances, refrigerated appliances should have the compressor and freon removed. Items which are not accepted at the Collection Center includes paint (unless dried up in the can), pesticides, motor oil, batteries, anti-freeze, hazardous wastes, fluorescent light bulbs, caustic chemicals, bricks/concrete, fencing, and glass. Also no electronic waste, which includes televisions, computer moni-
tors, or electronic devices. The Collection Center will be open to the public between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday during the clean-up campaign. Elderly and/or handicapped persons and residential property owners who are unable to take their items to the Collection Center may call the chamber to be placed on a list so that county crews can pick up the items for recycling or disposal. Items need to be placed at the curbside or in the alley way if dumpsters are located in an alley. Brush must be in a separate pile from all other trash items for city/county crews to pick up. Do not put brush or trash items near dumpsters, gas meters, utility poles or telephone poles. Such items will not be picked up until they are moved. Once items are picked up, crews will not come back to pick up items from that location again. For more information contact the Cuero Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture at 275-2112.
KCB ‘Extravaganza’ on Saturday
The Keep Cuero Beautiful Committee will host the Sixth Annual Garage “Extravaganza” Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The community is invited to participate in the sale. KCB encourages non-profits, such as schools, sports, church groups or civic clubs, to take advantage of this opportunity to reach a large and enthusiastic crowd of shoppers. The committee encourages those who are interested in participating to start spring cleaning now and gather items that are clean, useable, and will fill a void in someone
else’s closet, home or yard for the sale. Items that are welcome for the sale include craft items, fun art, sports equipment, furniture, tools, and all types of new or used household items. Food vendors are also welcome at the sale. KCB will rent booth spaces to food vendors on a firstcome, first-served basis. Live animals, guns and ammo will not be accepted to be sold. Groups or individuals may purchase a space or two spaces for a booth. The City of Cuero will waive the garage sale permit required. Booth spaces are avail-
able on the inner floor or around the perimeter of the pavilion. Because of the city’s pavilion expansion project last summer, there will be more perimeter spaces available to rent. On Saturday, March 3, the doors of the Yoakum Community Center opened at 8 a.m. to a chorus of “Guten Tag” and “Guten Morgen.” Over 400 persons, many dressed in traditional trachten and all sharing an interest in all things German, were in attendance as the Texas German Society held its annual state convention in Yoakum. The Lavaca/DeWitt County Chapter hosted the event and provided a diverse slate of speakers, exhibits, and vendors. With music in the background, the first hour was filled with registration, breakfast and visiting. At 9 a.m., the day’s events began with the Presentation of Colors by the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 854, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Reverend Jonathon Mielke of Holy Cross Lutheran Church then offered the Invocation. Both Lavaca/DeWitt County Chapter President Charles Soehnge and Texas German Society State President Robert Herridge then offered a warm welcome to all attendees. Local dignitaries Yoakum Mayor Annie Rodriguez and DeWitt County Judge Daryl also welcomed the convention attendees. Klaus-Jochen Guehlcke, the Deputy Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, offered comments relevant to the influence of German culture and its continued impact on today’s world. The Sons of Hermann organization presented President Charles Soehnge with a citation commending the Texas German Society in its ongoing efforts to preserve German culture. Featured speakers were Judy Soehnge, Don Kaspar and Patsy Hand. Judy Soehnge’s speech about her ancestors’ arrival in Texas from Europe included charming anecdotes. Don Kaspar spoke about the evolution of Kaspar Wire Works from sim-
ple tools and accessories into an international corporation. Patsy Hand shared her expertise in genealogy and provided valuable information about those who might be searching the Indianola database. Information was also provided about the German Veterans Roll and how to enroll any veteran of German heritage. The “German Trails” of Texas also were discussed and information provided about their location and historical significance. The New Braunfels Village Brass Band then took the stage and toes began to tap as they played and sang traditional German songs. The music was continued as Hermann Gruneberg played keyboard during a traditional German meal of roast pork, bratwurst, German potatoes, red cabbage, peas and carrots, rolls, and fruit cobbler. After lunch, the business meeting of the convention was conducted. Information was provided about “Das Haus” the preserved farmhouse which serves as a base for the Texas German Society. Everyone was invited to visit and reminded that donations for its preservation would be gladly appreciated. The convention observed a moment of silence in memory of those members who had died during the previous year. Especially close to the Lavaca/ DeWitt Chapter members was Monroe Rathkamp, who lost his life due to an auto accident in February. The Texas German Society presents scholarships to students who have an interest in German culture. Kallie Koph-mann from La Grange was present at the convention with her parents, teacher and German exchange student friend. She read her winning essay about her visit to Koln, Germany, and her future plans to study art restoration because of the impact of seeing the Koln Cathedral being restored.

Douglas P. Taylor Douglas P. Taylor, age 53, of Corpus Christi and formerly of Cuero, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 with his loving and devoted wife of 34 years at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Douglas was born on August 14, 1958 to Lewis J. and Lillian (Gohlke) Taylor. Doug was raised in Cuero where he met and married the love of his life and true soul mate.
They moved to Corpus Christi so Doug could start his career in the oil industry. Out of the 31 years he lived in Corpus, he worked 27 of them for TIW, Corp. where he was proud and honored to become the district manager of the South Texas area. He and Sandra were proud owners of Air & Filters in Corpus Christi. Doug was a member of the American Petroleum Institute, the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Oilfield Christian Fellowship. Doug was a great outdoorsman who loved boating, fishing, hunting and most of all golfing with his many, many, golf buddies. He will be remembered mostly by his big warm smile and kind, genuine heart. Doug was a big family man who loved his wife, two daughters and son in laws and two beautiful granddaughters. Before his death he was ecstatic to hear the news that both his daughters were pregnant each with a baby boy. His family was the most important joy in his life and he cherished “family day in the pool” every Sunday of the summer months. Doug will always be remembered for his love of family. He was a wonderful husband, dad, father in law, “Popo,” son in law, brother in law, brother and uncle to his many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all those who lovingly called him “Tater,” his friends and the many, many people whose lives he has touched. He is survived by his wife Sandra Spears Taylor of Corpus Christi, daughters Jenny (Adam) Remlinger, Alyse (Jeff) Gonzalez granddaughters Katelyn Remlinger and Brylie Gonzalez, all of Corpus Christi, sister Debbie Rose of The Woodlands, brothers Bruce Taylor of Corpus Christi, Terry Taylor of Deer Park and many special nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel in Corpus Christi. Doug loved life immensely and wanted no one to cry or mourn his death, so immediately following the memorial service a celebration of life will be hosted by two of his special friends, Darel and Angela Blohm at his favorite “watering hole,” Whiskey River in Corpus Christi. Burial will take place at 7 p.m. on March 24 at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. In honor of Doug’s love of golf and being very “casual and comfortable” the family requests that all who attend any of the days events to please wear your golf or “casu-
al/comfortable” attire. In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be given to the CC API/Oscar Golf Tournament Doug Taylor Memorial. Contributions may be sent to Sandra Taylor at 2141 Joplin Lane, Corpus Christi, Texas 78414.

Eligibility: • Any high school senior graduating spring 2012, who currently resides and attends school in Texas • Seniors planning to further their education at an accredited two- or four-year college or university (public or private) in Texas • Timeline: March 15, 2012 – April 20, 2012. The Lady Gobblers began their rally on Chelsea Veit’s single up the middle. Moeller, who was 3-for-4 in the game with three RBI, then followed with her game-winning home run.
Madison Simpson hit a two-run homer to highlight Cuero’s four-run first inning. The win improved the Lady Gobblers to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in 28-3A play. La Vernia 004 000 2 - 6 401 000 2 - 7 Cuero

New Cuero athletics director and head football coach Travis Reeve didn’t waste much time Monday with introductions. Reeve spent most of his first athletic period at the school going over expectations and goals for the rest of this school year and the 2012 football season in the Gobblers’ weight room. “Only a select few players and coaches get to be a part of the tradition here in Cuero,” Reeve told the athletes. “I hope as you as excited as I am and our coaches are.” Reeve was named the new AD on March 11 after being picked from nearly 70 appli-
cants and five finalists. Reeve served under his father, Mark Reeve, during the 2004-09 seasons at Cuero before joining the Churchill staff when his father resigned to become an assistant at Texas Lutheran University. He was the offensive coordinator at Class 5A San Antonio Churchill the last two seasons. Reeve replaced Rick Owens, who was named the AD after Mark Reeve left in 2010. The Gobblers were 1210 under Owens and missed the playoffs last season with a 3-7 record. “What we can control is what we do from here on out,” Travis Reeve said to the athletes. “I can promise you we’re going to get after it and play Gobbler football.
We’re going to win and have fun doing it.” Reeve applied for the vacant Victoria East head football coaching job and was offered the AD/head football coaching position at Sonora before being offered the Cuero job. “You guys didn’t choose me to be here,” Reeve told the athletes. “You had nothing to say about me being here. But I’m here and the reason why I’m here is because I chose you guys. I believe in you guys and I knew a lot of you when you were growing up. I know what you guys are all about.” The Gobblers will open the 2012 season at home against the Wharton Tigers on Aug. 31.
Goebel to play for Generals VICTORIA - Former Cuero Gobbler Ross Goebel will play again for the Victoria Generals this summer. Goebel is a junior pitcher at Texas State and has compiled a 1-1 record with a 3.18 ERA this season for the Bobcats. Goebel has recorded one save and has struck out three batters while allowing six hits over 5 2/3 innings.
The Cuero Gobblers evened their District 28-3A record at 1-1 with a 9-2 win over the La Vernia Bears on March 13. Jordan Boothe (3-1) got the win while striking out six and allowing no earned runs over seven innings. Boothe also went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Also leading Cuero offensively were Logan Goebel (2-for-3, double, two RBI), Justin Kremling (2-for-3, run scored, RBI), Clint Davis (1-for-3, double), Reed Schiffbauer (1-for-2, double, RBI), and Braydon Sievers (1-for-2, two runs scored). 020 000 0 - 2 3 3 La Vernia Cuero 312 003 x - 9 8 2 Lyssey, Dennehy (6) and Parrish. Members of the community are invited to attend the supper and service. The theme of the 2012 Lenten series is “You Shall Love the Lord Your God.” In the 12th chapter of the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament of the Bible, a scribe comes to ask Jesus, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answers, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength’” (Mark 12:28-30). Jesus answers the scribe’s question with the words from the Shema, a passage from Deuteronomy 6 in the Old Testament of the Bible that is recited
daily by many of the Jewish faith. These words form a covenant or promise between God and God’s people and shows how people can respond. The three congregations will also host joint Holy Week services on April 5 and April 6. The offerings received at the joint Lenten services will be designated for the offering received at the 2012 assembly of the Southwestern Texas Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America . The offering from congregations at the synod assembly, which will be held May 19-20 in Corpus Christi , will support mission congregation development and non-self-sustainable ministries through the Southwestern Texas Synod Evangelical Mission Endowment Fund. Proceeds from the endowment fund will assist in the re-start of congregational ministries, mission starts, congregations under development, synodically authorized worshipping communities, and ministries dependent on financial assistance. For more information about the March 28 service, call 645-2038.

The Gonzales Master Gardeners will be holding its annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, March 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Texas Heroes Square. RecordRegion Builders Association’s annual show scheduled for Saturday, Sunday
The event offers the public an opportunity to bring their questions to the Master Gardeners as well. Horti-culturist Dr. Calvin Finch will also be on hand to answer gardening questions. The Gonzales Master Gardeners is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) corporation serving the community through horticultural, scientific and conservation education under the direction of Texas AgriLife Extension.
