Understand the Harsh Realities of Life (Part II)
Barry Day, Pulpit Minister of Watters Road Church of Christ barry.day@sbcglobal.net
By Barry Day
In Solomon’s journal of reflections on his frustrating life, he tried to figure out the things he couldn’t control. These harsh realities of life can lead to frustration, anxiety, and loss of joy. We’ve already seen that death is the harshest reality of all; and it affects everyone. Injustice and unfairness also drives
us crazy and makes us angry. Why? We can’t control life and death; and we can’t control people, either. Unfortunately, this led to a “why bother” mentality in Solomon’s life. It’s like he threw up his hands in disgust and frustration as he cried out, “Meaningless, meaningless, everything is meaningless!”

What are some more examples of the realities of life that we can’t control? One is the oppression of the needy. In Ecclesiastes 4:1-3 Solomon said with all the oppression he sees in life, we’re better off if we’re not even born! That’s frustration out of control! How do you feel when you look out in the world and see oppression of those who are in great need? Solomon saw the tears and the lack of comfort of people with little or no power to do anything about their
oppressors. How to we deal with the oppression of others? When we live only for ourselves we miss opportunities to help others. Jesus taught us that when we encounter the needy, the sick, the sinful, or the oppressed, we should do what we can to help. In compassion, we should help the helpless. It’s frustrating when we can’t help when we want to. We may not be able to help everyone, but we must do our best

with those we can. This is the essence of “love your neighbor as yourself.”
and have no one to share it with; or no one to work with. The wisdom of “two are better than one” expresses his desire to have someone to share his life with. One way we overcome the reality of personal loneliness is to help those who are lonely themselves.
Another harsh reality of life is loneliness. Solomon was thinking about a lonely man who had no one in his life. No help, no friend. All he did was work and work alone. How sad and frustrating (Ecclesiastes 4:7-11). I think Solomon was referring to himself. He was a lonely man. He described how miserable it is to have all the wealth in the world
