Whitehouse Varsity Football Team

Wildcats hope to advance deep into State playoffs BY DON TREUL Editor

Head football coach Randy McFarlin may be in his Ànal season as mentor for the Whitehouse Wildcats. The Whitehouse Independent School District administration did not renew McFarlin’s contract past the 2012 season so he said he is going to focus on teaching the team how to play football and worry about what happens after that when the time comes. The Wildcats did advance to the State playoffs in 2011, but they were defeated in the Àrst round. Behind an AllState quarterback and equally talented receivers, Whitehouse posted high scores in last year’s games. Unfortunately, a poor defense allowed opponents to score as many or more points, handing the Wildcats a 5-6 record (including 5-2 in district). McFarlin said he will work hard to strengthen the defense and get a running game going. Whitehouse relied on a very strong passing game the past three seasons, but most players who provided that aerial punch are gone. Returning to the lineup, however, is senior receiver Dylan Cantrell, who has committed to playing college football at Texas Tech following graduation. Cantrell snagged 87 passes for

HEAD COACH RANDY McFARLIN 21 touchdowns and more than 1,400 yards. McFarlin had two outstanding prospects to take the reins as the new signal-caller for the team, including Patrick Mahomes and Ryan Cheatham. Both are long-time friends and are outstanding baseball players and all-around athletes. Whitehouse also will rely on a more seasoned offensive line that could include Caleb Bowman, Kyle Battles, Zach Conerly, Austin Dickerson, Keagan Smith and McKenlee Smith. Defensively, Aaron Clemons, Will Thomas, Brannon Beaton and Matt Gibson will anchor the defensive line, Coleman Patterson could pace the defensive backÀeld, and Derek Clemons is a likely starter in the linebacker corps. Whitehouse scrimmaged Gilmer Aug. 17, and will scrimmage at

Mt. Pleasant Friday, Aug. 24. The regular season will start Friday, Aug. 31, when the Wildcats host Hallsville. They play Chapel Hill at Rose Stadium Friday, Sept. 7, and Homecoming is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14. The Wildcats will host Sulphur Springs for Homecoming. Whitehouse will be at Marshall Friday, Sept. 21, and will host Carthage Friday, Sept. 28, before an open week Oct. 5. District 16-4A competition will begin for the Wildcats Friday, Oct. 12, when they host Lindale. After a district game at Jacksonville on Friday, Oct. 19, Whitehouse will play back-to-back home games with Nacogdoches on Friday, Oct. 26, and Corsicana on Friday, Nov. 2. The regular season will end Friday, Nov. 9, when the Wildcats play at John Tyler.

Whitehouse Varsity Volleyball Team

District title, State playoffs goal for Ladycats BY DON TREUL Editor

It is good to start a season with the all-District Co-Blocker of the Year as the anchor of the volleyball team. Head coach Brittney Nordin’s 2012 varsity squad will feature Fulani Petties, who is one of three seniors on the team and earned All-District superlatives last year. The Ladycats Ànished with a 25-13 record in 2011, good for third place in a strong district, and fell in the bi-district round of the playoffs, and Whitehouse posted 23 victories in 2010, so the 2012 squad has an outstanding legacy on which to build. “Our season has started off well,” Nordin said. This team has a lot of heart and play hard. We are a young team returning only two from varsity last year but I am excited about this group and their intensity on the court.” The Ladycats scrimmaged Carthage and Chapel Hill earlier this month, and they hosted New Diana and Pittsburg

to open the 2012 season. All three teams posted a 2-0 mark in the dual with Pittsburg and new Diana. The varsity beat Pittsburg 25-10, 25-10, 25-10 with Petties leading in kills with 12 and Angela Knight added 14

assists to the team total. In the match with New Diana, the varsity fought back from being down 0-2 (22-25, 23-25) to win the next three games 2518, 25-23, 16-14. Petties led the team again with 21 kills and Knight post-

ed 26 assist. Whitehouse also played in the Carthage Tournament Aug. 16-18. The Ladycats will host Longview and Texas High in a dual match Tuesday, Aug. 28, followed by a trip to Tyler for the Tyler

Tournament. Troup, the White Oak Tournament, Pleasant Grove and Pine Tree are on the schedule before the Ladycats begin District 16-4A competition. Whitehouse will start district play on the road at Nacogdoches Friday, Sept. 21. That match will

be followed by Lindale, Corsicana, Jacksonville and John Tyler. The Ladycats will start the second round of district competition when they host Nacogdoches Tuesday, Oct. 9, and will complete the regular season hosting John Tyler Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Troup has new coach, new QB + BY DON TREUL Editor

The Tigers got a taste of the State playoffs in 2011 and would like to feast on a playoff run in 2012. To help Troup accomplish that goal, new head

coach Dennis Alexander hopes to guide the Tigers to another successful season. Alexander was selected to replace former head coach Chuck GrifÀn, who left to coach in Florida. Alexander has 40 years experience in coaching, including State champi-

ningback Seth Gibson, a real workhorse in 2011, should provide some offensive sparks. Gibson had 179 carries for more than 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Tigers will feature a stout offensive line that will include

onships at DaingerÀeld in 1983 and 1985. He moved to Troup after 10 years as head coach at Harleton, and he has a 323-126-11 lifetime record one of best records in Texas football history. Alexander will have to Ànd a new quarterback but senior run-

Head coach Arden Johnson had more seniors on the 2011 Troup volleyball squad, but she feels the 2012 squad with only two seniors, including middle hitter Wykina Caldwell and outside hitter and setter Hunter Jordan. The Lady Tigers posted a 12-24 record in 2011 and Ànished third in the district. Coach Johnson said her 2012 squad has higher goals, including the State playoffs. “We’re young but we have real good athletes,” Johnson said. “We should have a real good year.” Johnson said she was conÀdent the Lady Tigers would reach the playoffs and she would be disappointed if the team doesn’t go deep into the playoffs. Joining her seniors will be junior Bethany Mason, a defensive specialists, and sophomore outside hitter Josee Ross. The Lady Tigers scrim-

maged Tatum and Hallsville, and they started the 2012 season hosting a dual meet with Henderson and Grace Tuesday, Aug. 14. Troup played

in the Van Tournament Aug. 17-18, and played at Gilmer Tuesday, Aug. 21. The Lady Tigers are slated to play in the Overton Tournament Thursday

and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 25; and will host Bullard Friday, Aug. 24. Following matches with Van, Jacksonville, Whitehouse, the White Oak

Tournament, Troup will start district competition Friday, Sept. 7, when the Lady Tigers host West Rusk. Troup will continue district play with

Hawkins, Frankston, Winona, Arp, Sabine and Harmony. The second round through the district schedule will begin Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Arp fans will not be disappointed in 2012. Head coach Dale Irwin has been very successful at Arp, which posted a 10-3 record last year and advanced to the regional round of the playoffs. With Àve offensive starters and four defensive starters, Irwin will have a strong and experienced core to work with this season. The offense will start with Mikechell (Mike) Potts, who rushed for 13 touchdowns and more than 800 yards last season. Potts will rely on the experience of offensive linemen Mason Bobbitt, Cory Ayers,

Lady Tigers hope to continue tradition BY DON TREUL Editor

The 2011 Arp volleyball team was loaded with seniors, including the District Most Valuable Player, Alexia Faraimo. Only two starters return to the 2012 squad, including Sheyenne Atchley and Lauren LittleÀeld. However, head coach Leigh Ann Roberts seems to be able to get the most out of her teams. Roberts recorded her 700th victory as a head coach during the 2011 season. While 700 wins is a milestone, Roberts credited the hard work of her players during her 28 years as the Arp head coach. “It was very special. But it’s not about me, it’s about the kids,” Roberts said after posting her milestone victory.

Roberts and her teams expect to reach 20 or 25 victories every season and this year’s squad likely will achieve that goal. Roberts schedules play with larger schools in scrimmages and predistrict matches, so the girls are prepared with district competition begins. The Arp lady Tigers usually keep up with the larger schools posting heir share match victories. Following scrimages with Lindale and Robert E. Lee (Class-5A), Arp played a dual match with Henderson and Kilgor tostart the regular season. Tournaments in 2012 will include Van, Marshall and Tyler, and the Lady Tigers will start district competition Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Hawkins. Other district matches include, in

order, West Rusk, Winona, Frankston, Troup, Harmony and Sabine. Arp will start the second round of the district schedule when the Lady Tigers host Hawkins Tuesday, Oct. 2. Arp will next play a home match when the Lady Tigers host Grace and New Diana in a dual match Tuesday, Aug. 28. Arp will not host another match until they host West Rusk in loop competition Tuesday, Sept. 11. In addition to Atchley and LittleÀeld, Roberts will rely on the talent of Mikala Frost, Alicia Summers, Jessica Daniel, Megan Campbell, Rebecca Daniel, Taylor Burnett, Bailey Clary, Kaci Kuykendall, Kayleigh Moore and Tinikia Lacy. Bethany Gray and Sara Sarica are the team managers.
