Tim Tadlock was named head coach of the Texas Tech baseball program on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country, Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes at Oklahoma while helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995. Tadlock worked with the Red Raider defense during the 2012 season where they finished with a .971 fielding percentage, which ranks second all-time at Texas Tech. Following his first season at Tech, the Red Raiders had a record-breaking Major League Baseball Draft as nine Texas Tech players were selected – a new school record. Included in the signees were center fielder Barrett Barnes, who became the third highest draft pick in Tech history as he was taken in the supplemental first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 45th overall pick. Also taken were second baseman Jamodrick McGruder (9th Round – Seattle), right-handed pitcher Shane Broyles (14th Round – Colorado), right-handed pitcher Duke von Schamann (15th Round – Los Angeles Dodgers), catcher Bo Altobelli (21st Round – Minnesota), third baseman Reid Redman (23rd Round – Tampa Bay), left-handed pitcher Daniel Coulombe (25th Round – Los Angeles Dodgers), right-handed pitcher John Neely (30th Round – Houston) and left-handed pitcher Rusty Shellhorn (31st Round – Seattle). The nine MLB Draft selections tied for the second most by any NCAA program while only Arizona State (10) had more. Nine draft picks marked the fifth most in Big 12 history. In addition, five of Tech’s position players earned All-Big 12 recognition during Tadlock’s first season at Tech, including McGruder (first team), Barnes (first team), first baseman Scott LeJeune (second team), Altobelli (honorable mention) and shortstop Tim Proudfoot (All-Freshman Team). It didn’t take Tadlock long to make his mark on the recruiting trail at Oklahoma, as his 2006 recruiting class ranked fourth nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The No. 4 ranking was the best for the Sooners since 1987. Tadlock also had top-25 nationally ranked recruiting classes by Baseball America in 2006 (11th), 2009 (16th), 2010 (21st) and 2012 (13th). In addition, OU’s 2012 recruiting class received a No. 4 ranking this fall by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. During his tenure at Oklahoma (2006-2011), the Sooners made five trips to the NCAA Tournament with two Super Rgional appearances in 2006 and 2010 while making it back to the College World Series in Omaha in 2010. It marked OU’s first time to make five post-season appearances in a six year span since 1987-1992. The Sooners had unparalleled success at the plate under Tadlock’s guidance. Oklahoma batted over .300 during all six of his seasons – first time for OU since 1995-2000 – and his 2009 and 2010 clubs combined for 195 home runs, the most ever at Oklahoma in consecutive seasons while leading the Big 12 in homers both years. The Sooners 104 home runs in 2010 rank second all-time in Oklahoma history. While an assistant at Oklahoma, Tadlock mentored 41 players who were selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft. In 2011 the Sooners had 11 players taken in the draft which tied an all-time Big 12 record (Texas, 2007). In fact, during three of Tadlock’s six years with the Sooners at least nine players were taken in the draft. After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000). Overall, Tadlock guided the Grayson program to five championships along with five District V championships and while eight Vikings earned All-America honors during his tenure as head coach. ARIZONA STATE ALL-TIME SERIES Texas Tech and Arizona State meet for the 20th time as the Sun Devils hold a 14-5 lead in the all-time series. The Red Raiders are 1-0 in Lubbock against ASU while winning the only meeting on April 17, 2006 - which also marks the last time Arizona State made a trip to Lubbock. Last season the Red Raiders went into Tempe and defeated No. 10 Arizona State, 8-4. Tech has won three of the last four meetings and five of the last nine matchups overall. Although, the Sun Devils won 10 straight over the Red Raiders to start the all-time series from 1989-1995. TEXAS TECH VS. PAC-12 CONFERENCE OPPONENTS Following its midweek series split out in Tucson, Texas Tech is 17-44 all-time against current Pac-12 Conference opponents. Tech’s most common opponents are the Sun Devils and Wildcats of Arizona, yet Tech has played seven other Pac-12 programs dating back to 1955. TEXAS TECH SNAPS STREAK AGAINST LONGHORNS - WINS BIG 12 OPENING SERIES IN AUSTIN Texas Tech opened its Big 12 slate with a series win against Texas in Austin while winning games one and three of the three-game set. The Red Raiders picked up their first series win against the Longhorns since 2002 (Lubbock) while winning its first series over UT in Austin since 2001. RUNS WEREN’T EASY TO COME BY Texas Tech and Texas showcased their pitching staffs during the opening weekend of league play while the Red Raiders won the series scoring just six runs and holding the Longhorns to just four runs. It marked Tech’s fewest runs ever allowed to Texas in series history dating back to 1968. It also marked the fewest runs scored by Tech while winning a series since 2007 when the Red Raiders scored only five runs in a series win over Kansas in Lubbock. JONNY DROZD NAMED BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK Texas Tech junior left-handed pitcher Jonny Drozd had a busy week while earning Big 12 Newcomer of the Week and helping lead the Red Raiders to a 4-1 week. Drozd went 2-0 on the week while pitching 12.1 scoreless innings, scattering six hits and striking out 12 with just one walk allowed. Drozd started and pitched seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts on Tuesday, March 12 in a 9-2 victory over Utah Valley in Lubbock. Later that week, Drozd pitched 5.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to help guide Tech to a series-clinching win over Texas, 4-2 in the series finale. In fact, Drozd’s 5.1 innings in relief while earning the win marked the longest relief appearance by a Red Raider in a win during Big 12 play since 2004 when Corey Gerstner pitched six innings out of the bullpen during Tech’s 10-3 win at No. 12 Nebraska on April 11, 2004. TEXAS TECH IN BIG 12 OPENERS Texas Tech began its 17th season in the Big 12 Conferene with a series win at Texas, March 15-17. The Red Raiders are now 7-9-1 in Big 12 opening series while having won three of their last five. Tech is just 3-8 in opening conference series on the road, with its series win at Baylor two years ago marking the program’s first since 1997, the first year of the Big 12 Conference. The Red Raiders are 7-10 all-time in Big 12 openers while having won three of their last five and four of their past seven. Here is a look back at the Red Raiders in Big 12 opening series weekends. GAME NOTES DALTON BROWN GRANTED IMMEDIATE ELIGIBILITY BY NCAA Freshman RHP Dalton Brown spent his first collegiate semester at Arizona in the fall of 2012. Brown transferred to Tech at the spring semester and has now been ruled eligible immediately for remainder of the spring semester by the NCAA. Brown, a four-time all-district and three-time all-state pick at Ponder High School, was tabbed the No. 93 Major League Baseball Draft Prospect (Perfect Game) during his senior year of high school. He became the first student-athlete from Ponder HS to sign a NCAA D-I National Letter of Intent with a major college program while signing out of high school with Arizona and receiving a total of 36 Division I scholarship offers. TECH OFF TO ITS BEST START IN THE MONTH OF MARCH SINCE 2006 Texas Tech has gotten off to a 9-4 record during its first 13 games in the month of March. The last time Tech won nine of its first 13 games in the month of March was in 2006 (10-3). TECH HOLDS 76 CONSECUTIVE ROAD GAME STREAK WITHOUT BEING SHUTOUT Texas Tech has gone 76 consecutive road games without suffering a shutout - a streak that dates back to April 11, 2009 at No. 11 Oklahoma. That marks the longest active road streak without being shutout in the Big 12 Conference. TREY MASEK STARTS SEASON WITH 32.1 CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGS STREAK Junior RHP Trey Masek put together four impressive starts to open the 2013 season. In fact, Masek recorded 32.1 consecutive scoreless innings while not allowing a run during his first four starts before having his streak snapped in the first inning of his fifth start at Texas during the opening weekend of Big 12 play. His streak is believed to be the longest ever by a Red Raider and was among the best all-time in NCAA history (below). This season will mark the first time Tech has played against an unranked Texas team since 2001. RED RAIDER POSITION PLAYERS WITH 1 ERROR IN THE LAST 83 INNINGS OF PLAY DATING BACK TO MARCH 5 If you look at the most recent box scores for the Red Raiders it might be deceiving. Texas Tech position players (not including pitchers) only have one fielding error over its last 83 inning, a streak that dates back to March 5. FOX COLLEGE SPORTS ADD THREE TEXAS TECH GAMES TO ITS SLATE FOR 2013 Texas Tech will now play 14 games on national television this year as FOX College Sports and the Big 12 Conference recently announced the addition of three games picked up for telecast during the 2013 season. The Red Raiders will had an additional road game televised with its midweek series opener at Rice (April 16 - 6:30 p.m. CST) set for a FOX College Sports telecast. Tech will have two additional home games broadcast to a national audience on FOX College Sports as the network has added the Oklahoma State game on May 4 (6:37 p.m. CST) and also the regular season finale against Baylor on May 18 (12:07 p.m. CST). 2013 TEXAS TECH BASEBALL GAME NOTES
RECORD BREAKDOWN
FOUR RED RAIDERS POST 10-STRIKEOUT PERFORMANCES IN 2013 Entering this season the last time a Red Raider pitcher struck out 10 batters in a single-game was back in the 2010 Big 12 Championships when Chad Bettis struck out 10 against then-No. 1 Texas. Well, things have changed as this season it took 19 games for four Red Raider pitchers to record at least 10 strikeouts each. Prior to this year, to find the most recent 10-strikeout performances you would need to go back to the 2009 (Miles Morgan - 11, Nathan Karns - 11) and 2010 (Bobby Doran - 16, Chad Bettis - 10) seasons to find the last four 10-strikeout games by Red Raider pitchers. Through 19 games, Texas Tech has received 10-plus strikeouts from Dominic Moreno (11), Trey Masek (10), Jonny Drozd (10) and Corey Taylor (12). DEVON CONLEY NAMED BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK Devon Conley was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on March 11. Conley is the fourth Red Raider all-time to receive the honor and the first since 2011 - the first year the award was given weekly to the league’s top performer. Conley batted .350 (7-for-20) during five games against No. 16 Arizona (2 games) and UT Arlington (3 games).

RED RAIDERS DROP WILD SERIES FINALE - FALL TO 42-4 SINCE 2007 WHEN SCORING 10+ RUNS AT HOME The Red Raiders lost a wild series finale against UT Arlington on Sunday, March 10, when the Mavericks defeated the Red Raiders, 13-12. It marked the first time Tech has lost at home when scoring 12 or more runs since 2007 (13-15, vs. New Mexico). The Red Raiders are now 42-4 at home since 2007 when scoring double-figure runs.

TEXAS TECH’S 21 NEWCOMERS WHO HAVE SEEN ACTION ARE MOST IN DIVISION I BASEBALL In a report conducted by Stetson baseball SID Ricky Hazel, Texas Tech has played the most newcomers (first-year NCAA D-I players) in the nation. The Red Raiders have 25 newcomers on their roster - by far the most in the nation - but so far this year Tech has played 21 of them, which leads all D-I programs. Below is a look at the top five. 1. Texas Tech________________________21 2. Tennessee________________________19 3. Florida International________________18 Georgia State_____________________18 5. Oklahoma________________________17 MIDWEEK WIN OVER NO. 16 ARIZONA BIG IN MANY WAYS Tech secured a midweek series split at defending College World Series champion Arizona with a 5-2 victory on March 6 in Tucson. The win marked the Red Raiders first win over a ranked opponent in 2013 and it was also Tech’s first come-frombehind win of the season. The Red Raiders trailed 1-0 through six innings before plating five runs in the seventh inning. TECH SETS SCHOOL RECORD ALLOWING EIGHT RUNS DURING THE FIRST SEVEN HOME GAMES Texas Tech allowed only eight runs during its first seven home games of the 2013 season to set a new school record for the fewest amount of runs allowed during the first seven home games of the season. The previous record was 11 runs allowed by the 1957 and 1972 Red Raiders. RED RAIDERS ALREADY SURPASSED 2012 SAVES TOTAL In just 14 games this season the Red Raiders have recorded five saves from four different pitchers. Tech’s 2012 season total for saves was four. Perhaps an even more amazing fact is that four of the Red Raiders five saves this season have come in a three-inning effort. Three true freshmen (Johnathon Tripp, Matt Custred and Nathan Bauder) earned their first career save in a three-inning save situation while senior Jerad McCrummen tallied his first save of the season (2nd career) in a three-inning save at defending national champion Arizona to preserve a 5-2 win. TADLOCK BECOMES FASTEST RED RAIDER COACH TO FOUR SHUTOUT VICTORIES Tim Tadlock has led the Red Raiders to four shutout victories while needing just 12 games to accomplish the feat. The previous school record was held by Berl Huffman - the fourth all-time coach in Tech history - while needing 33 games from 1961-62 to tally four shutout wins. Below is a look at every Tech coach who led the Red Raiders to four shutout wins and how many games it took them to reach the milestone. Head Coach Games to 4 Shutouts (Years) Tim Tadlock 12 games (2013) Berl Huffman 33 games (1961-62) Kal Segrist 42 games (1968-69) Beattie Feathers 89 games (1954-60) Larry Hays 91 games (1987-88) Gary Ashby 107 games (1984-86) Dan Spencer 139 games (2009-11) TEXAS TECH IS 7-13 ALL-TIME AGAINST DEFENDING COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS The Red Raiders are 7-13 all-time when facing defending national champions. This season the Red Raiders split a non-conference midweek series at defending champion Arizona in Tucson at Hi Corbett Field. Below is a look at each of the defending national champions that Tech has played during the history of its program. Overall Tech is 6-12 with a 4-6 record at home, 2-4 on the road and an 0-2 record on a neutral site. Year Opponent Location Result 2013 at #16 Arizona Tucson, Ariz. TEXAS TECH HOLDS La SALLE SCORELESS IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES Texas Tech shut out La Salle in back-to-back games to win its first head-to-head weekend series of the season. Tech blanked La Salle 3-0 in game two of the series and then clinched the three-game set with a 7-0 shutout in the series finale. It marked the first time Tech had back-to-back shutouts since 2001 (21-0 & 25-0 vs. Howard - Opening Weekend). Junior RHP Trey Masek pitched a nine-inning, complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk in the first shutout on Saturday, March 2. The following day, freshman RHP Matt Withrow struck out eight in seven scoreless frames while leading Tech to a 7-0 win. RED RAIDERS HOLDING OPPONENTS SCORELESS AT A RECORD PACE Texas Tech has posted four shutout wins during its first 12 games this season. The last time the Red Raiders had that many shutouts in its first 12 games was in 1994 when the Red Raiders had four shutouts in the first 11 games of the season. One area history couldn’t stop the 2013 Red Raiders was recording shutout wins at home during the early going while Tech has four shutouts during its first seven home games. That has never been done in 64 years of baseball at Texas Tech. BURLESON TALLIES 11-GAME HIT STREAK TO OPEN 2013 SEASON Sophomore second baseman Bryant Burleson opened the 2013 season with a career-high 11-game hit streak that spanned from Opening Day on Feb. 15 until Mar. 2. Burleson batted .395 (17-for-43) during the streak with 10 runs, a double, six RBI, eight walks, two hit-by-pitch and posted a .500 on-base percentage and a .419 slugging percentage. RED RAIDERS ARE 19-1 WHEN WELCOMING A FIRST-TIME OPPONENT TO LUBBOCK SINCE 2010 The La Salle three-game series marked the 11th first-time opponent to play the Red Raiders in Lubbock since 2010.
