Tim Tadlock was named head coach of the Texas Tech baseball program on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country, Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes at Oklahoma while helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995. Tadlock worked with the Red Raider defense during the 2012 season where they finished with a .971 fielding percentage, which ranks second all-time at Texas Tech. Following his first season at Tech, the Red Raiders had a record-breaking Major League Baseball Draft as nine Texas Tech players were selected – a new school record. Included in the signees were center fielder Barrett Barnes, who became the third highest draft pick in Tech history as he was taken in the supplemental first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 45th overall pick. Also taken were second baseman Jamodrick McGruder (9th Round – Seattle), right-handed pitcher Shane Broyles (14th Round – Colorado), right-handed pitcher Duke von Schamann (15th Round – Los Angeles Dodgers), catcher Bo Altobelli (21st Round – Minnesota), third baseman Reid Redman (23rd Round – Tampa Bay), left-handed pitcher Daniel Coulombe (25th Round – Los Angeles Dodgers), right-handed pitcher John Neely (30th Round – Houston) and left-handed pitcher Rusty Shellhorn (31st Round – Seattle). The nine MLB Draft selections tied for the second most by any NCAA program while only Arizona State (10) had more. Nine draft picks marked the fifth most in Big 12 history. In addition, five of Tech’s position players earned All-Big 12 recognition during Tadlock’s first season at Tech, including McGruder (first team), Barnes (first team), first baseman Scott LeJeune (second team), Altobelli (honorable mention) and shortstop Tim Proudfoot (All-Freshman Team). It didn’t take Tadlock long to make his mark on the recruiting trail at Oklahoma, as his 2006 recruiting class ranked fourth nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The No. 4 ranking was the best for the Sooners since 1987. Tadlock also had top-25 nationally ranked recruiting classes by Baseball America in 2006 (11th), 2009 (16th), 2010 (21st) and 2012 (13th). In addition, OU’s 2012 recruiting class received a No. 4 ranking this fall by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. During his tenure at Oklahoma (2006-2011), the Sooners made five trips to the NCAA Tournament with two Super Rgional appearances in 2006 and 2010 while making it back to the College World Series in Omaha in 2010. It marked OU’s first time to make five post-season appearances in a six year span since 1987-1992. The Sooners had unparalleled success at the plate under Tadlock’s guidance. Oklahoma batted over .300 during all six of his seasons – first time for OU since 1995-2000 – and his 2009 and 2010 clubs combined for 195 home runs, the most ever at Oklahoma in consecutive seasons while leading the Big 12 in homers both years. The Sooners 104 home runs in 2010 rank second all-time in Oklahoma history. While an assistant at Oklahoma, Tadlock mentored 41 players who were selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft. In 2011 the Sooners had 11 players taken in the draft which tied an all-time Big 12 record (Texas, 2007). In fact, during three of Tadlock’s six years with the Sooners at least nine players were taken in the draft. After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000). Overall, Tadlock guided the Grayson program to five championships along with five District V championships and while eight Vikings earned All-America honors during his tenure as head coach. RED RAIDER BASEBALL GAME NOTES • vs. Utah Valley • March 12-13, 2013
2013 TEXAS TECH BASEBALL GAME NOTES
BIG 12 CONFERENCE
ON THE HORIZON Texas Tech opens Big 12 play this weekend (March 15-17) at Texas at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin. The Red Raiders will return to Lubbock on March 19 to host Arizona State for a midweek game before hitting the road for the second straight week to play its first games ever at West Virginia in Charleston, W. Va., March 22-24. UTAH VALLEY ALL-TIME SERIES Texas Tech holds a 1-0 lead in the all-time series with Utah Valley as the Wolverines visited Lubbock in 2011 during the Red Raider Classic... Tech defeated Utah Valley 6-2 while finishing the opening weekend of the season with a 4-0 record. TEXAS TECH VS. GREAT WEST OPPONENTS Texas Tech is 20-21 all-time against current Great West Conference opponents while having two of them on the schedule this season with Northern Colorado and Utah Valley. Tech’s most common opponent in the Great West Conference is by far UT-Pan American who Tech has played 38 times (trails, 18-20) dating back to 1967. TREY MASEK STARTS SEASON WITH 32 CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGS Junior RHP Trey Masek has put together four impressive starts to open the 2013 season. In fact, Masek has recorded 32 consecutive scoreless innings while not allowing a run during his first four starts of the season. His streak is believed to be the longest ever by a Red Raider and is approaching the all-time list in NCAA history (below). NCAA ALL-TIME CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGS George Plender, Vermont 60 IP (1954-55) Todd Helton, Tennessee 47 IP (1994) Ben McDonald, LSU 44 IP (1989) Aaron Crow, Missouri 43 IP (2008) Pat Vindette, Creighton 43 IP (2007) Eddie Bane, Arizona State 43 IP (1972) Nick Petree, Missouri State 38 IP (2012) DEVON CONLEY NAMED BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK Junior CF Devon Conley was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday, March 11 following the fourth week of the 2013 season. Conley is the fourth Red Raider all-time to receive the honor and the first since 2011 - the first year the award was given weekly to the league’s top performer. Conley batted .350 (7-for-20) during five games against No. 16 Arizona (2 games) and UT Arlington (3 games). KLIFF KINGSBURY TO THROW OUT FIRST PITCH BEFORE ARIZONA STATE GAME - MARCH 19 Texas Tech football coach Kliff Kingsbury will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Red Raiders March 19 game against Arizona State at 6:30 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Kingsbury and the Tech football program will open its spring football season the following day, March 20, in preparation for his first season as head coach later this fall. FORMER RED RAIDER COOPER FOUTS RETURNS TO LUBBOCK AS ASSISTANT COACH AT UTAH VALLEY Former Texas Tech catcher and three-year letterman Cooper Fouts will make his return to Lubbock this week as an assistant coach with the Utah Valley Wolverines. Fouts was a mainstay behind the plate for Tech from 2003-05 and was a key part of Tech’s last run to the NCAA Tournament in 2004 in Atlanta where Fouts was named to the Atlanta All-Regional Team. Fouts played in 156 career games at Tech (147 starts) with a .265 batting average (114-for-431) with 76 runs, 16 doubles, two home runs, 77 RBI, 62 walks, 20 hit-by-pitch and fielded .991 behind the plate. Fouts began his coaching career at College of Southern Nevada where he mentored current big leaguer and former first overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft - Bryce Harper. Fouts most recently spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Pepperdine before joining the Utah Valley staff this past fall. RED RAIDERS DROP WILD SERIES FINALE - FALL TO 42-4 SINCE 2007 WHEN SCORING 10+ RUNS AT HOME The Red Raiders lost a wild series finale against UT Arlington on Sunday, March 10, when the Mavericks defeated the Red Raiders, 13-12. It marked the first time Tech has lost at home when scoring 12 or more runs since 2007 (13-15, vs. New Mexico). The Red Raiders are now 42-4 at home since 2007 when scoring double-figure runs. TEXAS TECH’S 21 NEWCOMERS WHO HAVE SEEN ACTION ARE MOST IN DIVISION I BASEBALL In a report conducted by Stetson baseball SID Ricky Hazel, Texas Tech has played the most newcomers (first-year NCAA D-I players) in the nation. The Red Raiders have 25 newcomers on their roster - by far the most in the nation - but so far this year Tech has played 21 of them, which leads all D-I programs. Below is a look at the top five. 1. Texas Tech________________________20 2. Tennessee________________________19 3. Florida International________________18 Georgia State_____________________18 5. Oklahoma________________________17 RED RAIDER POSITION PLAYERS WITH 39 CONSECUTIVE INNINGS WITHOUT COMMITTING AN ERROR If you look at the most recent box scores for the Red Raiders it might be deceiving. Texas Tech has only made two fielding errors over the last 39 innings, but both of those errors have come from pitchers. With that being said, Tech position players have now gone 39 consecutive innings without making an error. The last error a Tech position player made was at Arizona in game one of the series in the sixth inning (Barrios).

RECORD BREAKDOWN
TECH SETS SCHOOL RECORD ALLOWING EIGHT RUNS DURING THE FIRST SEVEN HOME GAMES Texas Tech allowed only eight runs during its first seven home games of the 2013 season to set a new school record for the fewest amount of runs allowed during the first seven home games of the season. The previous record was 11 runs allowed by the 1957 and 1972 Red Raiders.

RED RAIDERS ALREADY SURPASSED 2012 SAVES TOTAL In just 14 games this season the Red Raiders have recorded five saves from four different pitchers. Tech’s 2012 season total for saves was four. Perhaps an even more amazing fact is that four of the Red Raiders five saves this season have come in a three-inning effort. Three true freshmen (Johnathon Tripp, Matt Custred and Nathan Bauder) earned their first career save in a three-inning save situation while senior Jerad McCrummen tallied his first save of the season (2nd career) in a three-inning save at defending national champion Arizona to preserve a 5-2 win. TADLOCK BECOMES FASTEST RED RAIDER COACH TO FOUR SHUTOUT VICTORIES Tim Tadlock has led the Red Raiders to four shutout victories while needing just 12 games to accomplish the feat. The previous school record was held by Berl Huffman - the fourth all-time coach in Tech history - while needing 33 games from 1961-62 to tally four shutout wins. Below is a look at every Tech coach who led the Red Raiders to four shutout wins and how many games it took them to reach the milestone. Head Coach Games to 4 Shutouts (Years) Tim Tadlock 12 games (2013) Berl Huffman 33 games (1961-62) Kal Segrist 42 games (1968-69) Beattie Feathers 89 games (1954-60) Larry Hays 91 games (1987-88) Gary Ashby 107 games (1984-86) Dan Spencer 139 games (2009-11) TEXAS TECH IS 7-13 ALL-TIME AGAINST DEFENDING COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS The Red Raiders are 7-13 all-time when facing defending national champions. This season the Red Raiders split a non-conference midweek series at defending champion Arizona in Tucson at Hi Corbett Field. Below is a look at each of the defending national champions that Tech has played during the history of its program. Tech blanked La Salle 3-0 in game two of the series and then clinched the three-game set with a 7-0 shutout in the series finale. It marked the first time Tech had back-to-back shutouts since 2001 (21-0 & 25-0 vs. Howard - Opening Weekend). Junior RHP Trey Masek pitched a nine-inning, complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk in the first shutout on Saturday, March 2. The following day, freshman RHP Matt Withrow struck out eight in seven scoreless frames while leading Tech to a 7-0 win. RED RAIDERS HOLDING OPPONENTS SCORELESS AT A RECORD PACE Texas Tech has posted four shutout wins during its first 12 games this season. The last time the Red Raiders had that many shutouts in its first 12 games was in 1994 when the Red Raiders had four shutouts in the first 11 games of the season. One area history couldn’t stop the 2013 Red Raiders was recording shutout wins at home during the early going while Tech has four shutouts during its first seven home games. That has never been done in 64 years of baseball at Texas Tech. BURLESON TALLIES 11-GAME HIT STREAK TO OPEN 2013 SEASON Sophomore second baseman Bryant Burleson opened the 2013 season with a career-high 11-game hit streak that spanned from Opening Day on Feb. 15 until Mar. 2. Burleson had his streak come to an end going 0-for-3 with a walk on Sunday, March 3. Burleson batted .395 (17-for-43) during the streak with 10 runs, a double, six RBI, eight walks, two hit-by-pitch and posted a .500 on-base percentage and a .419 slugging percentage.
