The value of British Texel In the last 45 years the British Texel Sheep Society has grown to become the UK’s largest pedigree sheep society and the breed is by far the most popular terminal sire in the UK today. In addition, the Society operates the largest registry of Texel sheep anywhere in the world, registering 55,000 lambs, 21,000 females and 1,600 sires each year. Throughout the history of the breed in the UK, Texel breeders have been at the forefront of adopting new technologies. From performance recording through to AI and ET and onwards to genomic testing, Texel breeders have provided the lead where others have followed. The initiative and dedication shown by Texel breeders to be among the early adopters of these technologies has been central to driving the breed forward and ensuring it continues to deliver for the UK sheep industry. Today the breed adds more than £23m/year* to the sheep sector and continues to be the first choice for farmers, processors and retailers when looking for consistent, high yielding carcasses. *Abacus Bio Financial Impact of the Texel Breed Study 2015

Chairman’s Foreword Chairman’s Foreword
s I sit back and reflect on my first year as chairman it’s hard to say where the year has gone. I have attended so many shows, sales and Texel events and met so many people involved with Texels that time has flown by.
A
Our breed just keeps moving on at a pace that is sometimes hard to believe. The Society stand was awarded first prize at one of the most important sheep events on the agricultural calendar - NSA Sheep 2018 at Malvern. We followed this at the national sales which were once again very successful with higher averages and clearance rates. A new one-day format was introduced for the NI sale which proved successful and was well received by both vendors and purchasers alike. In lamb sales have been well attended and the prices that have been achieved reflect the quality of the stock on offer.
texel.uk
10
Our Society is also moving at a rate that can be hard to keep up with. Our ongoing R&D projects, run so diligently by Ed Smith, will give more data and clarity as we near the conclusion of them. In terms of future planning our Society’s efficiency, we are now at the stage of renewing and totally upgrading our online database. This is something that is essential to the Society and its members. Along with John and all the Society staff’s hard work we are confident that we will have improved online services for our registry services and to support our progressive genetic improvement services.
With an uncertain future (I’m not going to mention the “B” word) all we can do is make sure that as a Society and individual breeders we keep producing the right animals that are required for the market and if we don’t produce these animals we must cull hard as they deflate the price of required sheep and lower the standards within our breed and its performance. The iTexel Conference, held at Penrith in November 2018, was a huge success for the Society. It was very well attended, with presentations from industry leaders and enjoyed by members and guests alike. This was followed by the YDP TXL Day Out in Carlisle, again extremely popular with members of all ages with some excellent presentations on all aspects of breeding sheep. Thank you to all that took part and all that attended the events for making it a tremendous weekend for the Texel breed. We have an enthusiastic YDP committee who are keen to push on and develop new initiatives and activities within the Society and are well organised by Ailish. It just leaves me to thank everyone for their support and help over this last year, the board of directors - welcoming our two newest directors Alastair and Tomos - John, Gil and all the office staff at Stoneleigh. I must also add a special thanks to my family and staff for their continued support, allowing me the time to fulfil this role to the best of my ability.
Steve Richardson Chairman
I
With that in mind and in line with the thoughts of the Society’s diverse membership this year’s edition of the Journal has been put together to provide members with a consummate review of the Society’s key activities in the last 12 months, including the major shows and sales. It has been clear that those who engage in Society shows and sales like the journal to use as a reference document for show & sale performance. In years to come, and for this reason alone, its publication has been moved earlier in the year, ultimately moving to a January publication in 2020. In the meantime, the Society continues to pioneer the use of new media, such as its social media channels and live streaming of the flagship sale at Lanark, giving members access to the very latest news and information at their fingertips 24/7/365. The Society’s website is central to this and alongside this, developments to the Basco database are being considered to make it better suited to the needs of both pedigree and commercial sheep farmers in the next 10 years. The Society’s team has been proud to drive live ringside show and sale reporting, using social media for the past 10 years to ensure keen members have the latest information available to them as close to real time as we can achieve. The Society’s staff and board are committed to ensuring the Society remains a
pace setter in membership communications and the evolution of the Bulletins are an excellent example of this. For me these are the stand out publications of the year providing topical updates on a wide range of subjects as well as detailed show and sale reports and features, with its larger format allowing great use of the imagery which the Society invests significantly in each year. Commercial promotion continues with the Society’s ‘Primestock’ magazine, focused solely on advocating the value gained by commercial producers across the UK, all using Texel, in various systems, small and large, each with unique challenges that the climate and environment throw at them. The Society achieves a significant amount with its small team of highly motivated staff, all focused on providing you, the members, with the service that you have come to expect. A highlight in 2018 was the extremely successful ‘iTexel Conference’ held at Penrith, along with the Society’s National AGM and Youth Event. It was great to see a range of ages engage. While each event had a specific purpose, they provided an opportunity for members to engage, debate on the latest topics at varying levels and socialise, which Texel breeders seem to have a natural ability to do. The topics discussed ranged from Government policy changes, technological advances, or helping young breeders to understand essential husbandry skills by engagement with the experts lined up for the seminars. A truly excellent weekend where all involved benefited.

n the age of rolling news, social media and instant updates it is gratifying to know that some staples of life, such as this Journal, are still highly valued and transcend the generations.

Obituary of Mr Alexander Thomson Gray Texel Sheep Society Chairman 1978 - 1979 Obituary
homson was born at Greenstrands Farm, Sandilands, Lanark, on 21st June 1925. He moved a few miles along the road to Langside Farm in the late 1920’s along with his parents Alex and Effie Gray, where his sister Margaret was born.
as president was presented with the Burke trophy by the Duchess of Kent.
He lived at Langside until his marriage in 1951 to Helen Frame, when they set up home at Hillfoot in Brocketsbrae. Alex and Anne were born there and in 1955 they swapped houses with his parents and farmed at Langside until 1976 when they built the Bungalow at Damhill.
He was well known for growing seed potatoes and found a market for his Pentland Dell, Pentland Squire, Maris Piper and latterly Navan seed at Paisley, Perth and Stirling sales.
T
During his working life he was involved in Lesmahagow Young Farmers and various Societies, Lesmahagow Show society, Ayrshire Cattle society and the Texel Sheep Society. He was chairman of Lesmahagow YFC in 1946/47, became president in 1960 for 10 years and became a patron of the club in 1975.
texel.uk
Lesmahagow Show Society was a great part of his life and the show was held at Langside Farm for many years and, with the show date only three weeks before the Royal Highland Show, a class for Texel Sheep was founded. This was a great opportunity for Texel Breeders to exhibit their stock and to this day attracts great numbers. In 1973/4 he became president of the Ayrshire Cattle Society, a great honour, and travelled to New Zealand, Finland and Canada to world conferences in his role as president, where he made lifelong friends. He judged many shows including the Royal Show at Stoneleigh and in his year
14
Around the mid-seventies Thomson was involved in the second importation of Texel Sheep to Scotland and became president of the Texel Sheep Society in 1979. After purchasing a shearling, Midhill Yorkie, his flock went from strength to strength, winning the gimmer class at the Royal Highland Show in the late seventies, and keeping a close eye on Alex’s success when he had the top average at Kelso on a number of occasions. Life when he retired to Damhill was lambing his Texel sheep and dressing potatoes during the winter. When the cows increased at Langside and they stopped growing potatoes, Thomson turned to the garden to work, creating a beautiful garden which he attended to well, until his early nineties. Meeting people at shows and sales was a great part of Thomson’s life, it was at these events that Thomson excelled in mixing with likeminded people and all breeds of stock. He is survived by his wife, Nellie and family Alex & Grace, Anne & Jim, his five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

125,000gns bid takes Lanark top call as average rises 26% he season opening Scottish National Texel Sale, Lanark, saw a six figure top call for a ram lamb from Myfyr Evans’ Rhaeadr flock, Denbigh, Wales, with the sale average jumping 26% on the year.
T
With an overall average of £3417.04, a rise of more than £700 on 2017’s fixture, there was a broadly optimistic mood among breeders. The sale topper was Rhaeadr Best of the Best from Welsh breeder Myfyr Evans, a much fancied lamb combining a heady mix of recent high priced genetics. He is by the 70,000gns Teiglum Young Gun and out of a 12,000gns Auldhouseburn-bred ewe by the 145,000gns Knap Vicious Sid.

After attracting significant attention ahead of the sale this one was subject to a fierce bidding battle which quickly escalated past six figures before the hammer fell with the winning bidders, Hugh and Alan Blackwood, buying for their Auldhouseburn flock, Muirkirk, Ayrshire. And the Blackwoods were involved in the day’s second best call of 75,000gns when selling one from their strong pen, Auldhouseburn Boss. This son of the 130,000gns Sportsmans A Star is out of a homebred dam by the 145,000gns Knap Vicious Sid. He was another heavily fought

for lamb, with the buyers of this one being Keith, Roy and Alan Campbell for their Cowal flock, Argyll. Then making 40,000gns was the day’s pre-sale champion from the Knox family’s Haddo flock. This was Haddo Balvenie, a Clinterty Yuga Khan son. He had been champion at the Royal Highland Show earlier in the year and is out of an Ellen Valley Warlord daughter. Selling with an index of 470, he was bought in a three-way split by John Elliot, Roxburgh, Staplegrove Livestock, Foxhillfarm, and Ken Hodge, Greenarch. Late in the sale, which saw 20 sheep sell at five figures of more, came a 32,000gns bid for Plasucha Big Gun. This son of the homebred Plasucha All Star, from Robert Bennett is out of a dam by Kelso Wiseman and sold with an index of 415, having stood first in the pre-sale show. This one headed to Cheshire, with Charlie Boden and family for the Sportsmans flock. Meanwhile, the gimmer sale saw 54 gimmers sell to level at £1670.28, a rise of nearly £120 on the same sale in 2017. Heading up the prices was the female champion from the pre-sale show, a gimmer from Robert Bennett’s Plasucha flock, Welshpool. This was BFE1707032, an ET
Second best at 5000gns was Brian Hanthorn’s gimmer from the Mullan flock, HBN1701525, a Glenside Willie Winkie daughter out of a dam by Haddo Ringleader and being a full sister to the 42,000gns Mullan Armani and sold with an index of 387. She was the pick of Messrs Turner, Derby.
Average; 325 ram lambs £3417.04 (+715.04), 54 gimmers £1670.28 (+£119.73)
Scottish National Show & Sale
This gimmer had been fourth at the Royal Highland earlier in the summer and champion at Shropshire County Show. She sold to Staplegrove Livestock, Devon, for the Foxhillfarm flock.
Then at 4800gns was Ryan Bradley’s reserve female champion BYK1700258, a Bryn-Y-Coed Bear daughter out of a dam by Tophill Union Jack. This one found a new home with Donald MacPherson for the Hexel flock.

Selling for the top call, of 6600gns, was Rhaeadr Braveheart from Myfyr Evans’ Denbigh-based Rhaeadr flock. This one is by the 70,000gns Teiglum Younggun and out of an Auldhouseburn dam by the 145,000gns Knap Vicious Sid, making him a full brother to Mr Evans’ 125,000gns top seller at Lanark just two days previously. Buying this one was Alun Jones, Gwynfe, Carmarthenshire, for the Ynystoddeb flock, with a half share also taken by the Bwlch Y Gwynt flock of Dafydd Evans. Following was the first of two at 6500gns. This was a shearling tup from Esmor Evans’ Maerdy flock, with this being Maerdy Ace, a son of Seiont Unigolymn and out of a Peacehay-bred dam by Scolton Panther. This one sold to Osain Rhys, breeder of his sire, for the Seiont flock, Lon Pant, Gwynedd, with a half share retained by Mr Evans. Second at 6500gns was another ram lamb, this time from Paul and Christine Tippetts,
Shifnal. This was Wilodge Bravo, the reserve male champion from the pre-sale show. He’s by Baltier Thunderbird and out of a Beautry dam by Loosebeare Voldemort. Selling with an index of 426 he was knocked down to the Draper family, Montford Bridge, Shropshire, for their Claybury flock, with this one shared with the Reed family for the Scolton flock. Topping the gimmers on offer was the female and overall champion from Peter Woof’s Stainton flock at 4000gns. This was WPS1701099, an ET bred daughter of Knock Yankee out of a dam by Anglezarke Uno and with an index of 361. She sold to D and H Alderson, Barrowford. After that came a 2700gns call for another gimmer, BFE1707061 from Robert Bennett’s Plasucha flock. This is a full sister to Mr Bennett’s 18,000gns sale topper at Lanark, being a daughter of Eden Valley Wiz Kid out of a dam by Garngour Upperclass and was bought by J Cubbitt, Ballymena. Averages: 59 shearling ewes £726.10, 21 shearling rams £1302.50 (+183.94), 101 ram lambs £736.98 (+82.50) (Welshpool Livestock Sales).
