Texels help increase efficiency At UK level, production increased by four per cent for meat, eggs and milk from 1990 to 2017. But in the same period, greenhouse gas emissions for these foodstuffs dropped by 20 per cent. The UK is one of the most sustainable places to produce livestock in the world, with carbon emissions well below the global average. In the UK total sheep numbers dropped by 48% over the 27-year time frame, but total production by just 19%. This is set against a backdrop of increasing dominance of Texels within the UK sheep industry. In the most recent UK sheep breeds survey Texels accounted for 27% of all sires used in the UK, while Texel-sired females making up more than 12% of the total ewe flock.

Chairman’s Foreword Chairman’s Foreword
riting this just four weeks after the Society’s AGM in Northern Ireland I am still awestruck that I am the Society’s 25th chairman. It is an honour I never dreamt would be bestowed on me and one I am deeply humbled to take up.
W
Throughout my 36-year association with the Texel breed it has been the ability of Texel sires to add value to their progeny, both pedigree and commercial, which has driven my love of the breed and the people involved with it. It is without doubt the only breed in the UK able to deliver so ably for so many farmers in such a wide range of diverse farming systems and environments. The last year has been an incredibly successful one for the breed with exceptional demand seen at a large number of sales across the country, notably the UK’s two largest commercial ram sales at Kelso and Builth Wells.
texel.uk
10
At the Main NSA Ram Sale, Builth Wells, registered Texel rams accounted for 27% of the sale’s value, demonstrating a clear willingness from commercial buyers to invest in the breed for the long-term. Kelso, meanwhile, saw registered Texels claim a 25.5% market share by value.
From a membership services aspect the Society has made great strides this year to deliver new initiatives for the members, taking performance recording services in-house under the banner and launching the first stage of the Society’s new database, . Both of these developments will play an increasingly important role in the future of the breed and the ability of Texel breeders to continue to offer their commercial customers the rams they need both now and in the future. The investment required by these initiatives is significant, but I am confident it is one which will prove beneficial for members for many years to come and the development of the database is something the entire board is incredibly proud to have played a part in. On a personal level I have always enjoyed the show ring and it has been pleasing to see the breed take two major interbreed championships at, arguably the greatest shows in the UK, the Royal Highland and Royal Welsh, backed up by the reserve interbreed championship at the Great Yorkshire. I wish all members a successful year and look forward to seeing you at many of the shows, sales and other events over the course of the next 12 months.
Roy Campbell Chairman
T
It never ceases to amaze me how welcoming and supportive members are with one another, while competing strongly for the top stock, to progress their own flock performance. In support of members, the Society continues to operate across many sectors of the industry, whether political, technical, socially or economically, advocating best practice where we can develop a variety of solutions that enable members to thrive with the breed. Under pinning all of the Society’s services is its new database, , unique in so many ways although delivering much of what was valued with the Society’s BASCO system. With providing the advantage, with its suitability for use with smartphones and tablets, most commonly used by the membership. While the breed continues to disrupt production systems, offering solutions further up the hill, where discerning producers seek out modest margins for commercial production. It is evident that there are a plethora of challenges, such as political change, both at a national and international level, consumer behavioural change, with plant based diets becoming fashionable to contend with and largely out of breeders’ control.
Commercial lamb producers need to focus on what they can control, by analysing their own margins and using the solutions easily available to them. The Texel breed offers that ideal solution, which also benefits our planet. How? You may ask. That is a simple answer – efficiency and adaptability to convert low-quality forage into high-quality protein. Proven over decades of research and practice. The reason Texel is so popular today is not out of coincidence or just great promotion; it’s a product that works and works well across a multitude of climates and systems. We are pleased to be involved in a global first project – “grass to gas”, collaborating with six other countries that will help inform and support science with a study on GHG emissions-with a focus on methane and feed efficiency. This will support the adoption of new genetics and practices across a variety of farming systems around the planet. With an aim in our own country to support the UK government’s own target of achieving net zero emissions by 2040 and critically, help sheep producers remain profitable while managing our environment sustainably. Texel are without doubt part of the solution in many ways! I trust that you will enjoy this year’s annual review that details all things great about Texel over the last 12 months. I’m very much looking forward to the next chapter and the opportunities available to all that choose Texel.
John Yates

he last year has seen a further increase in the commercial use of Texel genetics, with the facts and statistics well reported in Society publications, matched with equal measures of positivity and an abundance of fun for those engaged with the breed around the show and sale rings.

2017 - 2019 Society Chairman, Steve Richardson.
2017 - 2019 Society Chairman, Steve Richardson. or a pig farmer who bought some sheep to graze a few paddocks when he took on a new farm it is fair to say immediate past chairman of the Society, Steve Richardson, has made a mark on the Texel breed.

“When we started the flock, having never kept sheep before, I set myself what I thought were some pretty tough targets. I wanted to win the ram lamb class at the Great Yorkshire and sell a sheep for more than 1000gns. Fast forward 28 years from those early beginnings in 1991 and the Stonebridge flock has won the ram lambs at Great Yorkshire on two separate occasions as well as taking the breed championship at the same show with a ewe lamb in 2008. Sales achievements have also far surpassed those early ambitions, with ram lambs topping at 9500gns for Stonebridge Tiger at Carlisle in 2012 and a full ET sister selling for 5100gns the following year at the English National, Worcester.
texel.uk
“Both of these were by one of the best tups I’ve used, Allanfauld Rockafella, he produced some great selling progeny and is without doubt more than paid back the return on the investment we made in him. “That said, probably the favourite of all the rams we’ve used was Drumpark President, he left some incredible shearling tups and a great crop of gimmers too. Sadly we lost him in his first season and it was an ill wind which blew fair, as we ended up buying a share in Rockafella as a result.” Another ram well remembered in the flock is the homebred Stonebridge Fully Blown, a Craighead Cobra son out of a Wollascot ewe. Having sold him as a shearling in 2000 Steve used him in 2002 and the resulting progeny
12
included the first and second prize ram lambs at the Great Yorkshire in 2003 and the third and fourth prize ewe lambs at the same show in the same year. “To achieve those results with lambs by a homebred sire was a tremendous result and one I’m particularly proud of,” adds Steve. Early successes for the flock included the sale of Stonebridge Fantastic in 1999 at Lanark for 6000gns, with this lamb going on to sire the 9000gns Neills Gucci the following year. However, while show and sale highlights are largely found among the flock’s ram lambs from the outset Steve has focussed on producing shearling rams for sale both from home and at the Northern Area Club’s sale at Skipton. “The shearling trade is the bread and butter of the breed and our flock. The lambs we’ve sold have always been the odd standout lamb that we feel has the makings of something special.” With that strong commercial focus in mind and his background in the pig sector Steve is also a committed recorder, believing strongly
“That invaluable extra information which can be gained from performance recording is crucial in breed progress and the gains which have been made in the commercial pig industry from performance recording are significant.” It is important, though, he says to strike a balance between performance and type, not sacrificing correctness and breed character for performance and vice-versa. Today the flock forms an important part of the farm business which includes 320 acres of arable, 40 acres of grassland and 200 breeding sows, with all progeny either finished or retained as replacement gilts.
But he says the major highlight has simply been being part of a board of directors all focussed on the same goals and pulling in the same direction. “This echoes the feeling throughout the Society and is reflected in the huge social gatherings breeders enjoy throughout the year at both Society and Club events the length and breadth of the UK.”

in the merits of performance recording to identify the sheep with the potential to add value to both his own and his customers’ flocks.
Steve says looking back at the two years he spent as chairman there have been many enjoyable days and events. “None more so than the honour of judging the Royal Highland Show. It was particularly pleasing to see my champion from that day, Haddo Balvenie, going on to be champion at Lanark too, the first time that feat has been achieved. “Other highlights include the Society launching delivery of performance recording under the texelplus initiative and also the launch of the first phase of the new iTexel database. “Both of these major changes will set the Society and its members in good stead for a number of years to come and ensure breeders can continue to manage their flocks with easy, instant access to the vital information they need to make informed breeding decisions,” he says.

“We feed all the grain we produce, with the pigs providing muck to go back on the arable land,” he explains.

Doug Nesbitt - Alwent flock President award winner 2019
Doug Nesbitt - Alwent flock President award winner 2019 erformance that pays would be a fairly accurate way of summing up the ethos of Doug Nesbitt, founder of the Alwent flock and without a doubt still a driving force in the flock’s successes, although much of the flock’s management now rests with his son, Steven.
P
For 87 year-old Doug, the recipient of this year’s President’s Award, the foundation of the flock came in the late 1970’s when he was looking for something different to the mainstream sheep of the time. “We’d toyed with another Continental breed for a few years, but they weren’t really what we were looking for. “So, we switched to Texels, mainly for the carcass traits they offered, particularly the depth of loin and fullness of gigot they added while retaining a leaner carcass.” Doug made a number of trips to Holland to source foundation genetics for the flock, which at that time was heavily based around Dutch genetics. “The French type didn’t have as much shape or loin as the Dutch type and it was carcass I was looking for,” he explains.
texel.uk
“Admittedly they were a bit smaller than the French type, but they had more shape and that attracted me. We made three trips to Holland to buy sheep and then progressed the flock from there. “Performance recording has always been important to me and we’ve stuck with it through the years to help find the sheep with the traits we want, particularly through the loin. “Finding the sheep with the biggest backend is pretty straightforward, but identifying those with deep, wide loins that are meat and not fat isn’t quite so straightforward and ultrasound scanning and CT scanning as
14
part of recording have really helped us make progress in those areas,” says Doug. However, this focus on performance traits hasn’t meant shying away from showing and the flock has enjoyed regular success at the Great Yorkshire, Royal Highland and formerly the Royal Show as well as local shows, including Northumberland County Show. “I’ve always enjoyed showing and believe it is still an important way of both promoting our own stock, but also comparing our stock to those of fellow breeders. It is also a great social occasion and we’ve had some great times and made some great friends through showing Texels,” he explains. Over his 40 year involvement with the breed Doug says he has seen many changes ‘not all for the better’ with the breed now ranked as the number one terminal sire in the UK. “It is great to see the breed where it is today as there were, undoubtedly, some hard days in our early involvement when the breed gained an unfair reputation due to some people selling first cross rams and these not performing as well as pure Texels,” says Doug.
“What we have always tried to focus on is breeding commercial tups for local farmers and we have a number of repeat customers who have been buying rams from us for more than 20 years. Alongside this we also sell at a number of sales, including at Lanark, Worcester, Carlisle and Skipton as well as local markets at Barnard Castle and Darlington.” Looking back through the history of the flock Doug says there have been a number of influential sires, but few females have been bought, with the aim always to retain the best females from their own breeding. “One particular key purchase was Seneirl Abraham, he was a massive lamb and sired the noted Alwent Major Force which was first prize recorded ram lamb at both the Royal Show and Great Yorkshire Show in 2006. “He in turn sired Alwent Neutron, a ram which had a huge influence in many flocks, with, at one time, the top six stock sires in recorded flocks all carrying Neutron blood.” “Other notable rams include Allanfauld Rockafella and Goldies Supreme, with a number of others also playing a part over the years.”
“Those were great achievements and it was notable that the Dutch buyers were looking for more size in their sheep as they felt the breed had got too small in their own country.” In awarding Doug the President’s Award outgoing Society president Steve Richardson said he had known since the day he was elected who the recipient of his award would be. “Doug has been a dedicated member and breeder for many years and continues to have the same commitment to the breed he has always had. “A keen showman Doug also recognises the value of performance recording and has been an outstanding ambassador for the breed for the last 40 years. A former chairman of both the Northern Area Club and the Society he is still as keen today as he has always been and is someone we should all aspire to be like,” added Mr Richardson. Doug said he was shocked to receive the award, but truly humbled to have been recognised in this way by the Society. “I’ve gained great enjoyment from my time in the breed and the people I’ve met and worked with,” he added.
Doug Nesbitt - Alwent flock President award winner 2019
“Currently a large amount of money is being made or lost through the chase to breed certain types of head. The breed will, however, only progress by its ability to satisfy the commercial market,” said Doug.
the first UK flock to export Texels back to Holland, as well as consigning sheep to France and selling semen to the USA.
02476 696629 office@texel.co.uk
Those challenges were overcome and the foresight of progressive breeders also saw growth rates in the breed dramatically improved to compete with many of the quicker growing breeds of the time. “Like everything in breeding it is all about striking a balance, but there’s no doubt in the early days Texels suffered for being slower growing, performance recording has helped overcome that and meant modern Texels can compete on growth rate with any breed out there.
The Alwent flock has achieved a number of firsts over the years, including, in 2005, being

YDP Five Nations Event YDP Five Nations Event ore than 50 young Texel enthusiasts from across the UK and Ireland gathered in Scotland from Friday 7th June to Sunday 9th June, for the biennial Five Nations Event which included flock visits and competitions.
M
Coming together on Friday afternoon for a brace of flock visits to the Gray family’s Scrogtonhead flock and the Clark family’s Garngour, Teiglum and Clarks flocks, the youngsters were shown excellent stock at both farms, including progeny of a number of noted stock rams.
texel.uk
The weekend’s competitive element also kicked off during these visits with guess the weight competitions at both farms. At Scrogtonhead the task was to guess the weight of two stock rams, Fine Valley You Star and Elmscleugh Yardsman, while at Garngour the competition was to guess the weight of stock ram Knock Yardsman. In addition, the attendees were also challenged to name previous Scottish National Sale top priced animals from photographs on display. Texel Society YDP coordinator Ailish Ross said both of Friday’s farm visits were a great way to start the weekend, with a great display of stock at both flocks and

exceptional hospitality from both families too. Friday evening saw the youngsters stay at the Clark family’s farm for an evening social event. Then on Saturday the fun continued at Craig Wilson Ltd’s Ayr market with a Highland Games event including welly wanging, toss the caber and tug of war as well as a relay race. This competition was separate from the remainder of the weekend’s events, with a combined Irish team taking first spot and England second, Wales were third and Scotland fourth. This was followed on Saturday afternoon with a flock visit to the Auldhouseburn flock of the Blackwood family. This visit included lambs by the 125,000gns 2019 Lanark topper Rhaeadr Best of the Best and the 130,000gns Lanark leader Sportsmans A Star. A stock judging competition also took place at Auldhouseburn, with Gordon Gray of the Ettrick flock acting as master judge. Competitors had to place four classes; aged ewes, two pens of shearling ewes and ewe lambs. The prize for winning the stock judging was two doses of Rhaeadr Best of the Best semen. With this semen not being made
It was tight at the top, but Ryan Greene, Southern Ireland, came out on top with 193 points with James McKerrow second and David McKerrow third. There was an open class as well as a Five Nations this was won by Kerr Jarvie, of the Duncryne flock. The Drumgooland Shield presentation took place at Auldhouseburn with the points calculated over all the competitions on the weekend.
Ailish said the weekend had been a huge success, allowing young Texel enthusiasts to come together in an informal, fun environment. “This event was a great chance for those attending to meet up and network and make new contacts among fellow enthusiasts for the breed. “Without a doubt everyone attending will have gone away with new friendships and knowledge and the Society’s thanks go to all the families which welcomed the attendees to their farms over the weekend and of course to the weekend’s sponsors, including Natural Stockcare, Lawrie and Symington, Farmgene and Galloway and Macleod.

Scottish National Show & Sale Scottish National Show & Sale
Judge: Charlie Boden - Sportsmans & Mellor Vale
he 2019 Scottish National Texel Sale, Lanark, saw the second highest priced sheep in the UK sell at 200,000gns, with the two-day sale grossing more than £1,271,000.
T
Midlock Capaldi, a lamb bred by the Wight family, Alan and Karen and children, Andrew, Ben and Katie, Biggar, is sired by Knock Bantastic. He is an ET-bred lamb flushed from a 2018-born Mullan Amigo daughter and goes back to a Garngour ewe purchased in 2016. The final bid came from a two-part consortium of Charlie Boden, buying for the Sportsmans and Mellor Vale flocks and Hugh and Alan Blackwood buying for their Auldhouseburn flock. Taking the day’s second best price was the pre-sale champion, Garngour Craftsman, from the Clark family, Helen and sons Alan, Andrew and David, when selling for 65,000gns. This son of the 17,000gns Silvermere Baltic is out of a dam by Mossvale Winston and is a maternal brother to the 40,000gns Garngour Alabama.

He was another secured by the judge Charlie Boden for the Sportsmans and Mellor Vale flocks, Cheshire. Setting the sale alight early in the day was Brian Hanthorn’s pen, with his best, Mullan Camikaze making 48,000gns. This son of Deveronvale Aftershock is ET bred out of a 2018-born ewe lamb by Teiglum Younggun. He was eventually knocked down to a consortium of five buyers, with Gordon Gray, Ettrick, Messrs Knox, Haddo, the
60
Orr family, Halbeath, Archie and John MacGregor, Allanfauld, and Andrew Neilson, Brackenridge all taking shares. Welsh breeder Willy Davis enjoyed a flying trade for his pen of three which levelled the day at £21,700. His best was 36,000gns paid for Usk Vale Cheeky Charlie, a son of Hexel Born To Be Wild and out of a homebred dam by Strathbogie Ya Belter, which is a full sister to the 17,000gns Usk Vale Albatross. He sold to the Nicholson family, Knockem, Procters Farm, Procters, Bruce Renwick, Castlecairn and D J McKerrow, Nochnary. Selling for 32,000gns was another pre-sale favourite, Drumbreddan Centre of Attention from James Hair. This first prize winner in the YDP class is by Midlock Yorkie and out of a dam by Knap Yorkie.
