GRADUATE COLLECTION

Photography / Saksia Wilson

18

“For my graduate collection I wanted to create something that came instinctively to me, from the relaxed 70’s style that has and will forever be the era that resonates with me to the Australian landscape that I grew up surrounded by. I also looked at a lot of Georges Méliès films and how he played with intensity of colour combining the use of colour with Australian land patterns from above to create my prints that were all hand screenprinted and then beaded. The idea behind the collection was to create a succinct collection that explored subtle textures, fabrications, prints and surface treatments on a backdrop of long clean modern silhouettes.”

DESIGNER Q&A

Describe your collection in 3 words Relaxed, fresh and Australian What inspires you? People. but I recently went to India and every corner of that crazy wonderful place has inspired me

TEXTBOOK

How would you describe your own style? Pretty laid back, probably a little 70’s inspired and definitely not opposed to a little double denim If you could dress anyone in the world, who would it be and why? Bianca Jagger circa 1977, Cate Blanchett, because she is incredibly beautiful, intelligent and talented or Erykah Badu - because she is my hero. ( I couldn’t decide) What is the most treasured item in your wardrobe? Its probably one ring I own that has not left my finger since it was gifted to me, otherwise my sunglasses collection

20

21

What item of clothing should every girl own? A jumpsuit What three items could you not leave the house without? My rings, a good pen and probably my wallet

TEXTBOOK

8. What are your current favourite trends? HOOPS!!! or any form of earring or ear jewel 9. Which AW13 trend will you be wearing? Probably all of the above, I recently just got my ears pierced again so I can wear double hoops.

22

10. What are your plans for the future? My plans are to keep creating and working on personal and collaborative projects. I have just recently graduated so I am currently working with a dear friend of mine but I plan to continue my creative pursuit to dress all the woman of the world in jumpsuits!

TEXTBOOK

THE WHITEPEPPER is the brain-child of two girls living in East London. They met and instantly shared the same love of street-style fashion and photography, which quickly developed into THE WHITEPEPPER brand!

Do you have any inspirations for the style of clothing that you produce and sell?

TEXTBOOK

The inspiration for the brand is, as it always has been, street style. The styling is absolutely integral to the design process, as we want our collections to be full of pieces which interlink with each other, styled with different pieces for a variety of looks which are wearable all year long.

42

In five years, how do you dream the company will progress? Since we launched in 2011, everything has moved so quickly, and we’ve had such a great response to everything we’ve done it’s really been overwhelming. We’re currently working on developing our website further, holding bigger and better events, and designing A/W13, which we’re so excited about!

43

Where can readers buy your clothing? Everything is available at www.thewhitepepper.com

TEXTBOOK

We also hold our Open Doors event once a month where we open our studio up and allow people to try on and buy in the studio.
