Welcome to the enchanting world of Satu Nisu, where unique art textiles are born from passion for Finnish nature. Satu Nisu draws inspiration from the diverse natural environment, transforming the essence of nature into beautiful, timeless, and tactile works of art. Each textile is created with love, passion, and Finnish craftsmanship and is handwoven in Kuopio, Northern Savonia.
Satu Nisu is a Finnish design brand specializing in creating unique home textiles that are entirely handmade. Each woven textile is an individual masterpiece, born with care and dedication. Traditional craftsmanship meets unprecedented modern design in these textiles – a combination that makes each piece distinctive. We aim to create an experience that is more than just textile – a story of Finnish culture, passion, and craftsmanship.
Satu Nisu stumbled into the world of textiles by accident. She shares the early stages of her career as follows: "My heart has always been beating passionately for interior design, and my dream was to work as an interior designer. I applied to study the field at a local college and got accepted. Filled with enthusiasm, I resigned as a store manager and followed my heart into interior design. However, on the first day of school, my excitement turned into confusion when I realized the classroom was filled with nothing but looms. I felt a chill down my spine when I heard that the studies focused on textile crafts. Back in primary school, I couldn't even finish knitting a pair of mittens in the crafts class, and I immediately declared that I would quit the program. The teacher's persistence and encouragement, however, convinced me to stay.
The day came when I was tasked with weaving a blanket. I set out to find inspiration in the forest. In nature, I saw rocks, moss, and bark... The vision was clear: my blanket had to reflect these beautiful surfaces of nature. Surprisingly, I wove a texture in my blanket that had never been seen before. Upon completing the task, I sought to refine my skills by enrolling in the Helsinki Design School for interior design. There, designer Kaisa Blomstedt, also a teacher, noticed my blanket. She remarked, "You won't just be an interior designer. What you've crafted is a true gem that deserves recognition worldwide." Inspired by Kaisa's words, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey in the textile industry. My textiles were showcased to the public for the first time at Finland's most significant furniture, design, and interior decoration fair, Habitare, in 2017. This marked the beginning of my global journey.”
the story
The unique art textiles are crafted entirely by hand, employing innovative techniques and weaving traditional looms from start to finish. The warp needed for weaving is traditionally created on warping boards, after which the base of the textiles is woven from wool yarn on looms. Each fabric piece is individually attached to the base by hand. This imparts a distinctive appearance and texture to each product. The textiles are handmade works of art that tell a story of reverence for tradition and innovative design. The entire process of crafting the textile, from start to finish, typically takes weeks, even months.
Instead of thinking about what a textile should be, I think about what it can be. Satu Nisu
Textiles are visually captivating and also provide significant acoustic benefits to various spaces. They soften the acoustics of a space, reduce echoes, and create a pleasant sound environment. Whether it's a living room, office space, or a public area, these textiles bring both visual beauty and a sense of balance to the auditory environment.
Custom orders for textiles are available to meet your specific needs. They can be crafted in your desired size and color, making our products suitable for individual homes and demanding public spaces. The textiles are designed to fulfill various requirements and are well-suited for projects of all sizes.
Environmental friendliness by utilizing recycled textiles is a crucial value for Satu Nisu. This provides customers with a sustainable option while promoting eco-conscious consumption. “The Responsible Design” Campaign launched in 2022 underscores the emphasis on utilizing discarded textiles to craft textile art pieces under the Satu Nisu brand. Textile art has been created for various entities such as companies and sports clubs, repurposing discarded jerseys and work clothes into unique pieces tailored to their spaces. This campaign merges recycling with community involvement, fostering a responsible and purposeful approach to art!
