‘Abstract Perception’
The reason I have given my project the title of Abstract Perception will become apparent in this statement. My initial ideas for this project were to experiment with various materials in an attempt to make people perceive knit in a different way. I want to steer people away from the general assumption that knitting is for ‘granny’s sitting by the fire’; to do this I have used an unconventional approach to the craft of knitting but at the same time using traditional knitting techniques. This project has an air of mystery about it, when looking at my experiments it is not obvious that the majority of them contain knit swatches and/or yarns. I would like to continue with this collection and develop it further for future projects. By experimenting with this initial project I have been provided with knowledge that will allow me to make positive changes for future projects, for example using agar jelly rather than gelatine as it provides more sustainability and longevity for my experiments. On the other hand at this stage I am not sure if I want my experiments to be sustainable as I am currently photographing them as they decay which could add a whole new element to my project. My experiments are incredibly visually stimulating, they encourage the viewer to want to interact and touch them to find out what the objects trapped inside are. My knits are blended into the gelatine using disperse dyes, colour is a huge element within my work, it is one of my main inspirations. I am very interested to know how the colours ran and blended together when I injected the dyes into the experiments, the truth is this element was out of my control on this occasion but yet again this is all part of the experimental approach.
