The Art of the Artefact and the Participatory Museum - Key Terms – Tacit Knowledge – Record – Translation – Interpretation – Collaboration -
The project began with a fascination of archaeology, ancient history, symbology, myth and mythology. From visiting museums and observing the collection and collation of artefacts, the value of tacit knowledge is absolute, one could say omnipresent. This knowledge is variable however, dependent of the viewer’s understanding, interpretation and area of interest. By using tapestry weaving to interpret and re represent the artefacts, a discipline with a rich history in utilizing historic image for illustrative purpose, to a new value is instilled. The vision and the idea become present. When understanding the concept of new museology, an even greater value of the artefact evolves. We realise that museum collections reflect how in the present, we perceive how in the past, people reflected upon the past before them. What survives; a memory, an idea, a process. How is this moulded and who controls that decision making process? Isolating an object from it’s used context and changing its form becomes a new type of conservation. Three key aspects of new museological theory are access, participation and representation. With collaboration, access is for all. The representation becomes a reinterpretation, absorbed with acknowledgement of previous and current process. By curating the work we organise the memory as well as making a new one. In the tapestry, the physical practice developed from this theory then becomes a practice which informs that very same theory. There evolves a cultivation of tacit knowledge through the depiction within the textiles.
